Moxie Gyarados wants leftovers imo so that it can conserve HP for Talonflames. LO wears down quickly, which make it easy priority pickings smh. With moxie the attack drop in using jolly is never noticed and should be implemented over adamant so as to outrun more at +1 to utilize moxie to the maximum while Substitute and Ice Fang need AC mentions as Sub allows it to stall out Rotom-W and Ice Fang punishes Dragon- types.

should be noted that if one uses sub to never run lim berry and just run lefties. Yes lefties sub is ok on moxie because it plays differently than weak intimidate sub counterpart that is meant for bulkier teams.

I blame all grammar error on iPod ty
If I'm reading this right...

I think the problem with Leftovers is you sacrifice a shitload of power that is necessary to hit those OHKOes on the Offensive DD set. The more I've thought about it lately the more I've wanted to swap Lum with Wacan Berry since, at the least, Gyarados can take advantage of Thunderbolt more than using Lum to set up.

+1 252+ Atk Life Orb Gyarados Waterfall vs. 252 HP / 232+ Def Skarmory: 156-185 (46.7 - 55.3%) -- 99.6% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
+1 252+ Atk Life Orb Gyarados Bounce vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mega Venusaur: 361-429 (99.1 - 117.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
+1 252+ Atk Life Orb Gyarados Waterfall vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mega Lucario: 302-356 (107.4 - 126.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO (relevant due to ExtremeSpeed)
252+ Atk Life Orb Gyarados Waterfall vs. 248 HP / 248 Def Landorus-T: 307-367 (80.5 - 96.3%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

Just random examples.

Sub is only used on the Defensive DD and Mega Gyarados which the former has Leftovers anyway (and should never run Moxie) and the latter is locked to using Gyaradosite.

I don't quite understand the rest so if you could please clarify on a more... stable system I would appreciate it.

Overview
########

With a base 125 Attack stat and access to Dragon Dance, Gyarados is a Pokemon that boasts being an offensive powerhouse. Thanks to its typing, which gives it resistances to numerous common attacks such as Close Combat and U-turn, and two excellent abilities in Intimidate and Moxie, Gyarados can easily set up and tear massive holes in teams. That's not all, though - Gyarados's great defensive typing and access to Intimidate allows Gyarados it to easily set up a Dragon Dance or become function as a wall. Roar and Dragon Tail compliment Gyarados's typing and bulky defensive stats, allowing it to pull off a defensive moveset set with Rest and Sleep Talk. The sheer versatility Gyarados offers is not to be underestimated when building teams around Gyarados it. Bear in mind that Gyarados's middling Speed, even after a Dragon Dance, can leave it prone to revenge killers such as Choice Scarf Genesect, Choice Scarf Terrakion, and Deoxys-S. The weakness to Stealth Rock can also be crippling as it hampers Gyarados's longevity.

Thanks to Generation VI With the new generation, Gyarados was blessed with access to a Mega Evolution. Mega Gyarados swaps out its Flying-typing for Dark-type, - allowing Mega Gyarados to set up on Pokemon that rely on using Stone Edge to take it out Gyarados. Furthermore, Mega Gyarados's defensive stats significantly increase as well as its Attack. Mold Breaker, its new ability, allows Mega Gyarados to punish Pokemon that rely on Levitate to dodge Earthquake, Storm Drain to block its monstrous STAB Waterfall, and piercing Unaware so that Clefable has a difficult time stopping it to ignore its stat boosts (parallel structure). Though Mega Gyarados obtains weaknesses to many notable weaknesses moves such as Mach Punch and U-turn, it Mega Gyarados also loses its nasty quadruple weakness to Electric-type attacks. Gyarados is a very flexible Pokemon both offensively and defensively, and Mega Gyarados simply adds to the flexibility that Gyarados can provide to its team Mega Gyarados's capabilities only add to the number of ways in which it can provide for its team. (This was VERY awkwardly worded.)

Moves
========

This set's goal is to set up a Dragon Dance in order to let Gyarados sweep opposing teams. STAB Waterfall is Gyarados's main STAB as it provides steady power, perfect accuracy, and a bonus 20% flinch rate. Earthquake compliments Waterfall as it too has perfect accuracy, and great power, and hits while hitting many of the targets that otherwise resist STAB Waterfall while also bypassing the Attack drop caused by Aegislash's King's Shield. Thanks to Mega Gyarados having access to Mold Breaker, Earthquake can target multiple strike Levitate users such as Rotom-W and Gengar. Bite hits the majority of Gyarados's checks in counters, such as - in particular Jellicent, Celebi, Trevenant, Gourgeist, and Slowbro as a few examples ("a few examples" doesn't fit with "in particular" or "such as"). Stone Edge is great for hitting opposing Gyarados, Kyurem-B, Zapdos, and Dragonite. Substitute may seem like an odd option on a set that doesn't utilize Leftovers as an item;, however, Substitute it is great for helping Gyarados set up on targets such as Scizor and Gastrodon while making Gyarados difficult to becoming less prone to being revenge killed by Choice Scarf Genesect and Deoxys-S. Substitute can also prevent Intimidate from lowering Gyarados's Attack as well as preventing and prevent moves such as Will-O-Wisp and Leech Seed from crippling Gyarados. Ice Fang is another option, as after a Dragon Dance, it can 2HKO Calm Mega Venusaur while still harming Celebi, Garchomp, and Dragonite.

Bounce is also a viable alternative to use on this set, the. The purpose of Bounce is being to bypass Mega Venusaur and Celebi as Gyarados in order to help Mega Gyarados sweep later in the game. After Stealth Rock, a +1 Bounce is capable of OHKOing Mega Venusaur 50% of the time and will also OHKO Bold Celebi.

224 Spe Speed EVs allow Gyarados to outspeed Timid Noivern after a boost, with while placing the remaining are placed EVs into HP for a little extra bulk. Max Speed with 4 EVs in Defense can also be used if you're afraid of opposing Gyarados. Intimidate is the recommended ability with this set as Gyarados and Mega Gyarados appreciate the Attack drop provided by Intimidate to maximize Gyarados's bulk tanking capability (Technically its bulk isn't being improved) while using it uses Dragon Dance. Moxie, though not necessarily the best ability, is great for punishing opponents that use sacs sacrifices to safely switch into their Gyarados check. Since Gyarados doesn't need to immediately become Mega Gyarados Mega-Evolve, Moxie can be utilized to give Mega Gyarados some extra power while limiting lowering the number of Dragon Dances necessary it needs to set up.

Usage Tips
========

Gyarados is has a very flexible Mega Evolution case. Staying as regular Gyarados to utilize Intimidate and Flying-types Flying-type's great resistances and immunity to Earthquake (Mentioning Earthquake seems redundant) can help benefit ease setting up for Mega Gyarados. Since Mega Gyarados will usually draw in attacks such as Keldeo's Secret Sword and Genesect's U-turn, Gyarados can stall out its Mega Evolution delay Mega-Evolving in order to set up on Pokemon that might be targetting to take out Mega Gyarados but not normal Gyarados some of Mega Gyarados's weaknesses that opponents may attempt to target. Even so This can also work the other way, with Gyarados can also use using its Flying-type Flying typing to bait for a free Dragon Dance as Mega Gyarados. For example, Gyarados can switch into Landorus-T and Mega Evolve to take laughable damage from Stone Edge. Another great example is stalling out Gyarados's Mega Evolution to bait lure in (just used "bait" last sentence) Rotom-W in and then immediately Mega Evolving Mega-Evolve to shut and shutting it down with a Mold Breaker Earthquake. Mega Gyarados has awesome bulk and can take emergency attacks at full health. Gyarados can fool Choice Scarf Genesect into using Thunderbolt, as, when after Gyarados Mega Evolves, proceeds to take it takes a maximum of 53% damage tops from Thunderbolt and it can OHKO Genesect back with a +1 Waterfall. When utilizing Moxie, Gyarados should be held back and used later in the game or when the opponent has a potentially significant amount number of Pokemon to sac use as death fodder. Moxie should be stacked up as much as Gyarados possibly can before Mega Evolving as it will lose Moxie for Mold Breaker. The chosen coverage move of choice is crucial to determining what Gyarados will need eliminated before it can attempt to sweep. Remember that Mega Gyarados's number one counter is Ferrothorn. Unless Gyarados is utilizing Bounce, Mega Ferrothorn either being either weakened or cleared out eliminated is an absolute must before for Gyarados can to attempt to a sweep.

Team Options
========

Mega Gyarados is a Pokemon that has a very strong offensive presence, but, as always, it appreciates back-up support from other Pokemon. Mega Gyarados is an excellent late game cleaner so packing heavy offenses from heavily offensive Pokemon such as Kyurem-B is a good idea. Kyurem-B can easily plow through many of Gyarados's checks and counters easily with Fusion Bolt and its STAB Ice Beam. Latios can also can puncture problematic Water-types and does well against Mega Venusaur thanks to STAB Psyshock, and it can utilize also provide support with Defog offensively (I'm confused as to how one uses Defog "offensively"). With Thanks to Hidden Power Fire, Skarmory and Ferrothorn become less of an issue. Talonflame is an excellent offensive teammate with access to Gale Wings and Brave Bird for taking out Conkeldurr and Breloom while using its STAB Flare Blitz to roast Ferrothorn and Skarmory. Ferrothorn has multiple methods of supporting Gyarados through entry hazards, paralysis, and Leech Seed to help Gyarados recover health while setting up Dragon Dance. For removing entry hazards, consider Starmie for Rapid Spin and ways of tackling its ability to take on bulky Water-types and Mega Venusaur. For Defog users, Latias, Scizor, and Zapdos all work well. Latias and Zapdos do well at tackling beating bulky Water-types. Latias can handle Mega Venusaur while Scizor can utilize its STAB U-turn to help Gyarados switch-in switch in.

move 3: Waterfall

Moves
========

This set takes a different approach from Gyarados's full offensive sets. Gyarados utilizes its great typing, natural bulk, and Intimidate to set up multiple Dragon Dances and then attempt to sweep. Taunt and Substitute are the two possible moves of choice to help Gyarados set up Dragon Dances or sweep easier. Taunt does an excellent job of shutting down recovery, and stopping moves such as Will-O-Wisp, Thunder Wave, and Toxic from hampering Gyarados's sweep, and while also preventing Roar and Whirlwind from forcing Gyarados out. Specifically, Taunt is great for threats such as Skarmory, Gliscor, Trevenant, and Gourgeist as the majority of their moveset is dependant dependent on support moves such as Substitute, Roost, Whirlwind, and Will-O-Wisp. Substitute functions by preventing status from hampering Gyarados, blocking weak attacks to ease setting up Dragon Dance, and obtain obtaining extra recovery from Leftovers, and prevent preventing Gyarados from being easy to revenge kill. Bounce is Gyarados's best option for its attack. Bounce allows Gyarados to bypass its biggest counters - Mega Venusaur and Celebi - while using Bounce the charge-up turn allows Gyarados to obtain extra health from Leftovers and protect Gyarados's its Substitute. Taunt and Bounce are great together because Taunt completely shuts down the option of opponent's attempts at blocking Bounce through Substitute or Protect. Though Bounce is superior in most scenarios, on this set Earthquake can be used to guarantee OHKOing -1 Mega Lucario while bypassing any King's Shield mind game games from Aegislash. Stone Edge is an option to beat opposing Gyarados, Kyurem-B, and Rotom-W easier more easily.

The given EVs allow +1 Speed Gyarados to outspeed Timid Noivern. Furthermore, the HP and Def Defense EVs allow Gyarados to withstand a U-turn from Choice Scarf Genesect and a burned Ferrothorn's Power Whip while behind a Substitute. It also prevents many Water-types such as Choice Scarf Keldeo locked onto Surf, any Gastrodon, and Slowbro missing without Psyshock from breaking through Gyarados's Substitute Substitutes. Best of all, Gyarados is guaranteed to take survive a +1 Close Combat from Jolly Mega Lucario and heavily dent it with a STAB Waterfall or OHKO it with Earthquake. The remaining EVs are placed into Attack to help Gyarados's attack still attacks hit reasonably hard after a single Dragon Dance. With Stealth Rock, a +1 Bounce can OHKO Calm Mega Venusaur, offensive Celebi, and max HP Conkeldurr. Gyarados can opt to go slower in exchange for extra power. After a Dragon Dance, 176 Speed EVs guarantees outspeeding guarentee that Gyarados will outspeed positive Speed natured Timid (I don't think it'll ever use a different +Spe nature) Starmie.

Usage Tips
========

Bulky Dragon Dance Gyarados is a very flexible Pokemon due to its both offensive and defensive prowess. The choice of between Substitute and Taunt is very crucial to knowing how to succeed with Gyarados setting up Dragon Dance. Taunt means running a few more risks with Dragon Tail, Scald, and Lava Plume; however, Substitute is still vulnerable to Roar, Whirlwind, and having Bounce being blocked by Protect, Substitute, and King's Shield. Gyarados can switch into a variety of offensive and defensive Pokemon and begin setting up. With Taunt, Gyarados can switch into an opposing Skarmory and Taunt it to prevent Skarmory it from using Whirlwind and Roost. Thanks to Intimidate and Gyarados's defensive EV spread, Brave Bird is a possible 5HKO, while Skarmory will continue to take recoil damage, making and make a 2HKO from a boosted Waterfall easier. Substitute is great against Pokemon such as Gastrodon which relies that rely on status to cripple its opponents, letting Gyarados and continuously set up Dragon Dance. Best of all, Substitute can make it Gyarados more difficult to revenge kill Gyarados. If you desperately need this Gyarados to check Mega Lucario and Dragon Dance Mega Charizard X while doing still dealing maximum damage to them, opt for Earthquake over Bounce and seek out Pokemon teammates that can take out Mega Venusaur and Celebi.

Team Options
========

This variation of Gyarados works exceptionally well on balanced teams that combine offensive and defensive Pokemon. Mega Venusaur is a great defensive Grass-types that can harass a lot of Gyarados's checks and counters with its great defenses and solid movepool. It can use its STAB Sludge Bomb for to hit Unaware Clefable, while STAB Giga Drain eliminates Rotom-W. Hidden Power Fire further helps ease the the burden on Gyarados bypassing by defeating Ferrothorn, as well as being and can also be used as an emergency check to Swords Dance Mega Lucario. Ferrothorn resists many of Gyarados's weaknesses while being able utilize its kit to aid help Gyarados remain bulky with Leech Seed, ensure KOes with Stealth Rock, or slow down opponents down with Thunder Wave. Bulky Water-types with Scald or Will-O-Wisp are great for luring in Ferrothorn to help Gyarados set up on Ferrothorn those that rely on Power Whip. Rotom-W and Jellicent are great examples, as they that can immediately burn Ferrothorn with Will-O-Wisp. Trevenant and Gourgeist are great examples of Pokemon that can use Will-O-Wisp and/or Leech Seed to aid Gyarados. Starmie can spin away Stealth Rock while handling Skarmory and Mega Venusaur with Thunderbolt and STAB Psyshock, respectively. Scald also can be used on Starmie to be used as a lure to for Ferrothorn. Latias, Scizor, and Zapdos are great users of Defog. Scizor and Zapdos can use their STAB U-turn and STAB Volt Switch, respectively, to pivot to Gyarados to help it set up. Latios is an offensive alternative to Latias to use for using Defog as it can leave dents in or and KO various Pokemon such as Mega Venusaur, Ferrothorn, and Skarmory. Latias can utilize its supportive movepool such as which contains Reflect, Light Screen, Wish, and Healing Wish to aid Gyarados and use its STAB Psyshock to prevent Mega Venusaur from bullying Gyarados. Thanks to Magnet Pull, Magnezone is great way of completely removing Steel-type threats such as Skarmory and Ferrothorn altogether. (Don't need both "completely" and "altogether".)

Offensive Dragon Dance

Moves
========

This Gyarados set trades any attempt at bulking Gyarados out to become purely offensive being bulky for pure offensive might. Waterfall is your primary STAB while Earthquake tackles grounded Electric-types and does great damage on threats such as Jirachi and Aegislash. Bounce is the best option for Gyarados's final move to help it bypass Celebi, Mega Venusaur, and as well as dent bulky Water-types such as Jellicent and Gastrodon. Alternatively, Stone Edge can be used to eliminate Zapdos, Dragonite, and Mandibuzz. Aqua Tail is a stronger yet slightly more inaccurate alternative to Waterfall. With a Life Orb and Stealth Rock up, a +1 Aqua Tail can OHKO Mega Mawile, max HP Scizor, and Mega Charizard X.

Set Details
========

An Adamant nature with max Attack and Speed is recommended for this set to help maximize Gyarados's tyranny. The ability choice is tricky because they both are very good for this set. Intimidate is a viable ability to help Gyarados set up Dragon Dance; however, Moxie is very good with this set as Gyarados wants to set up as minimal amount of Dragon Dances as possible. Life Orb is great for maximizing Gyarados's power and 2HKOing Skarmory with a +1 Waterfall. Lum Berry is an alternative item to protect Gyarados from harmful status such as burns and paralysis. Wacan Berry is a good item option to assist Gyarados setting up Dragon Dance too. For example, Choice Scarf Genesect's Thunderbolt will fail to OHKO Gyarados even after Stealth Rock. This is a great way to set up a second Dragon Dance if Genesect is coming in on the comes in too revenge kill. Intimidate is a viable ability to help Gyarados set up Dragon Dance; however, Moxie is very good with this set as Gyarados wants to set up as minimal amount of Dragon Dances as possible. (Moved this sentence to a more fitting location.)

Usage Tips
========

When using this set it is best to use this Gyarados as either a late game sweeper or a Pokemon that can create dents in the opponent's team mid game mid-game. Thus, you want your opponent to save Pokemon as potential sacs sacrifices for Gyarados to give Gyarados with Moxie it extra boosts in Attack thanks to Moxie. Though it may seem questionable to use Gyarados as a Pokemon that dents punches holes (a hole can't exactly be dented) instead of sweeping through the opponent's teams team, other Pokemon such as Mega Lucario can take advantage of weakened threats and sweep through the rest of the entire team remaining Pokemon. This is partly because this set Gyarados should not attempt to set up multiple too many (you mention the possibility of two later, which counts as multiple) Dragon Dances. Instead, this set wants to take advantage of either one or two boosts and then utilize Moxie for the remaining Attack attacking power that Gyarados might need. Life Orb is highly recommended due to the sheer power that Gyarados can have even after a single Dragon Dance. If you are utilizing A Lum Berry or Wacan Berry as alternative items these items can be used instead to help Gyarados obtain a second Dragon Dance or to safely 2HKO potential threats that rely on status or Electric-type attacks to stop Gyarados it.

Team Options
========

This variation of Gyarados appreciates powerful Pokemon that can puncture pierce through teams and weaken them significantly to help Gyarados finish them off. Kyurem-B is a great example as it can handle Rotom-W with Substitute + and Earth Power, Skarmory and bulky Water-types with Fusion Bolt, and it can at least threaten Mega Venusaur and weaken physically defensive Ferrothorn with its STAB Ice Beam. Since this Gyarados doesn't use Gyaradosite, various Mega Evolutions can help with beating beat holes through the opponents team. Nasty Plot Mega Lucario can place press onto put massive pressure on Skarmory and Ferrothorn with its STAB Aura Sphere. Mega Charizard X can utilize its STAB Flare Blitz to burst through Skarmory and Ferrothorn while heavily damaging bulky Water-types such as Rotom-W with STAB Dragon Claw. Entry hazard removal is very vital. Starmie can spin away hazards and wear out bulky Water-types, Skarmory, and Mega Venusaur., while Latias, Scizor, and Zapdos are great Defog teammates that can assist Gyarados. Latias can Defog for Gyarados while using its STAB Psyshock to harass Mega Venusaur. Zapdos can use STAB Thunderbolt or STAB Volt Switch to tackle bulky Water-types. Scizor can utilize STAB U-turn to help Gyarados pivot in easier. Latios is a great offensive teammate with Gyarados as it can also utilize Defog to clear out Stealth Rock while punishing Mega Venusaur with STAB Psyshock, as well as and Skarmory and Ferrothorn with Hidden Power Fire. (Look at how many times you use the word "STAB" here. It's rather excessive.)

RestTalk
########
name: RestTalk
move 1: Waterfall
move 2: Roar / Dragon Tail
move 3: Rest
move 4: Sleep Talk
ability: Intimidate
item: Leftovers
evs: 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 Def
nature: Impish

Moves
========

This set's purpose is mainly to utilize Intimidate and Gyarados's great typing and bulk as a defensive status absorber and a defensive Pokemon. With Rest and Sleep Talk, Gyarados can remove status, keep itself healthy, and not be completely prone vulnerable while staying asleep. Waterfall is the mandatory STAB move and helps Gyarados check potential threats such as Mega Lucario, Heatran, and Talonflame. Roar and Dragon Tail keeps Gyarados from becoming being setup bait. Alternatively, Roar will can be used in order to bypass Substitute and Fairy-types. Dragon Tail will bypass ignore Taunt as well as being and is Gyarados's best attack against Mega Charizard X. Earthquake is a viable alternative if you feel Gyarados needs to eliminate Mega Lucario immediately while also 2HKOing max HP Mega Mawile after Stealth Rock.

Set Details
========

The given EVs and nature maximize Gyarados's physical bulk while using Intimidate to cripple physical threats such as Mega Lucario, Mega Charizard X, and Talonflame. Leftovers is necessary on this set to keep Gyarados healthy.

Usage Tips
========

This set takes advantage of Gyarados's bulk, - not its offenses. This Gyarados is great to tackle at taking on offensive threats such as Mega Lucario and Talonflame. Gyarados is guaranteed to survive +2 Close Combat from Mega Lucario while dealing 62% minimum to -1 Mega Lucario it after the Defense drop. What's great about this Gyarados is that it can remain healthy most of the time and repeatedly switch in and out of the opponent while using Intimidate to weaken physical attackers. Removal of Stealth Rock is necessary to help Gyarados tank threats as much as possible.

Team Options
========

Stealth Rock is a great way of punishing the opposing Pokemon while when shuffling them with Roar or Dragon Tail. Ferrothorn is a cool good teammate because as it can lay down Stealth Rock to help Gyarados when using Roar or Dragon Tail it's phazing, spread paralysis to completely cripple offensive threats, and use Leech Seed to help Gyarados passively recover on some targets. Rapid Spin from Starmie works well by at eliminating potential offensive threats and some defensive targets. Since Dragon Tail can be a liability against Fairy-types, Excadrill can be used to execute KO them with its STAB Iron Head while spinning away entry hazards. Mega Venusaur is also a great teammate because it can rely on Gyarados's Intimidate can to help it tank otherwise dangerous threats such as other Gyarados, Rotom-W, and Azumarill. Using another Pokemon with Intimidate such as Landorus-T and Krookodile can be great to scare off physically offensive threats or make them hit significantly weaker than normal.

Other Options
########

Choice Band and Choice Scarf sets can be used on Gyarados with Moxie as the ability. While having an immediate boost to power or Speed and using Moxie to help boost Gyarados's Attack may seem appealing, it is restricted to one attack and STAB Waterfall isn't powerful enough without Rain rain to use be used as a standalone attack most of the time. A bulkier set with Thunder Wave or Toxic, Taunt, Waterfall, and Roar or Dragon Tail can be used with Wish and cleric support. Thunder Wave can cripple some of Gyarados's offensive threats while Toxic wears down defensive threats. Though it requires a Lonely or Naughty nature, Fire Blast is Gyarados's fastest way of eliminating Ferrothorn and 2HKOing Skarmory.

Checks & Counters
########

**Bulky Grass-types**: Without Bounce and or Ice Fang, Gyarados is prone to Grass-types hampering its sweep. Ferrothorn, Trevenant, Gourgeist, Mega Venusaur, and Celebi are the best examples as all of these have methods of crippling Gyarados or stopping Gyarados's its sweep. Ferrothorn is arguably the best counter to Gyarados thanks to its awesome great typing and, STAB (you already mentioned typing) Power Whip, access to Stealth Rock, and capable capability of crippling Gyarados with Leech Seed or Thunder Wave. Ferrothorn's ability also is a major thorn to Gyarados since STAB Waterfall, STAB Bounce, STAB Bite, and Ice Fang are all contact moves. With Substitute, Gourgeist and Trevenant can stall out Bounce and can break Gyarados's Substitute with a STAB Horn Leech or STAB Seed Bomb. Will-O-Wisp can cripple Gyarados as well. However, Mega Gyarados can use Bite to bypass these threats. Mega Venusaur and Celebi are more prone to Bounce, and, in Celebi's case, Bite and Ice Fang. With STAB Giga Drain they can completely stop Gyarados's sweep while recovering their own health.

**Bulky Water-types**: Rotom-W is a great check to regular Gyarados thanks to its access to STAB Volt Switch and Will-O-Wisp to cripple Gyarados. Vaporeon is a huge nuisance to Gyarados as it can use Wish + and Protect to stall out Bounce and cripple Gyarados with status. Unaware Quagsire can threaten Gyarados thanks to Unaware ignoring as it ignores all of its stat boosts. Jellicent can immediately burn Gyarados with Will-O-Wisp and to prevent being 2HKOed by the offensive Dragon Dance Gyarados set. However, it can still be threatened by Mega Gyarados and the Bulky Dragon Dance set Gyarados can scare Jellicent, though.

**Physical Walls**: Physical walls such as Mandibuzz, Skarmory, and Mega Aggron can give Gyarados a lot of trouble. Mandibuzz can beat any Gyarados without Stone Edge while a +1 Foul Play will OHKO any offensive Gyarados. Bulky sets can be phazed out with Whirlwind and, without Stealth Rock, Mega Gyarados will fail to 2HKO with STAB Waterfall. Skarmory is only 2HKOed by a +1 Mega Gyarados Gyarados's Aqua Tail or a +1 Life Orb Gyarados Gyarados's Waterfall. While Taunt sets can screw up Skarmory as well; however, without it, Skarmory is capable of setting up Stealth Rock to limit Gyarados's opportunities to switch-in, Spikes to hamper Mega Gyarados Gyarados's switches, Roost off to alleviate taken damage taken, or Whirlwind to phase it out with Whirlwind,. or It can also just attack Gyarados with its STAB Brave Bird. Mega Aggron can shrug off a boosted Earthquake from regular Gyarados thanks to Filter and set up Curse in front of Gyarados it. Be wary of a Mold Breaker Earthquake from Mega Gyarados, as at - +1, Earthquake 2HKOes Mega Aggron. Mega Aggron can carry Stone Edge or phase it out with Roar or Dragon Tail. Umbreon can withstand +1 Waterfall from regular Gyarados and OHKO back with STAB Foul Play. It can also use Roar to phase phaze out Gyarados, cripple it with a status move, or use Taunt to prevent Gyarados from setting up further. Clefable is great as it can use Unaware to block non-Mega Gyarados's boosts while 3HKOing most Gyarados with a STAB Moonblast. Clefable can Encore Gyarados while it uses Dragon Dance or Substitute and cripple with status or allow a free switch to a partner (I don't think Encoring Substitute will help you cripple it with status).

**Choice Scarf-users Users**: Choice Scarf Pokemon - Genesect in particular - can hamper end Gyarados's sweep. It can use Thunderbolt to OHKO regular Gyarados while using or its STAB U-turn against Mega Gyarados. Garchomp and Landorus-T can threaten regular Gyarados with Stone Edge while both have access to STAB Earthquake against to hit Mega Gyarados. Rotom-W can outspeed +1 Gyarados and shut it down with a STAB Volt Switch. Terrakion and Keldeo both outspeed +1 Gyarados and can OHKO with Stone Edge and Hidden Power Electric, respectively.
Overview

That's not all, though - Gyarados's great defensive typing and access to Intimidate allows it to easily set up a Dragon Dance or function as a wall. Roar and Dragon Tail compliment Gyarados's typing and defensive stats, allowing it to pull off a defensive set with Rest and Sleep Talk. The sheer versatility Gyarados offers is not to be underestimated when building teams around it.

With the new generation, Gyarados was blessed with access to a Mega Evolution. Mega Gyarados swaps out its Flying-typing for Dark-type, allowing Mega Gyarados to set up on Pokemon that rely on using Stone Edge to take it out. Furthermore, Mega Gyarados's defensive stats significantly increase as well as its Attack. Mold Breaker, its new ability, allows Mega Gyarados to punish Pokemon that rely on Levitate to dodge Earthquake, Storm Drain to block its monstrous STAB Waterfall, and Unaware to ignore its stat boosts. Though Mega Gyarados obtains weaknesses to many notable moves such as Mach Punch and U-turn, it also loses its nasty quadruple weakness to Electric-type attacks. Gyarados is a very flexible Pokemon both offensively and defensively, and Mega Gyarados's capabilities only add to the number of ways in which it can provide for its team.

Moves

This set's goal is to set up a Dragon Dance in order to let Gyarados sweep opposing teams. Waterfall is Gyarados's main STAB as it provides steady power, perfect accuracy, and a bonus 20% flinch rate. Earthquake compliments Waterfall as it too has perfect accuracy and great power, while hitting many of the targets that otherwise resist STAB Waterfall while also bypassing the Attack drop caused by Aegislash's King's Shield. Thanks to Mold Breaker, Earthquake can strike Levitate users such as Rotom-W and Gengar. Bite hits the majority of Gyarados's checks in counters, such as Jellicent, Celebi, Trevenant, Gourgeist, and Slowbro. Stone Edge is great for hitting opposing Gyarados, Kyurem-B, Zapdos, and Dragonite. Substitute may seem like an odd option on a set that doesn't utilize Leftovers as an item, however, it is great for helping Gyarados set up on targets such as Scizor and Gastrodon while making Gyarados less prone to being revenge killed by Choice Scarf Genesect and Deoxys-S. Substitute can also prevent Intimidate from lowering Gyarados's Attack and prevent moves such as Will-O-Wisp and Leech Seed from crippling Gyarados. Ice Fang is another option, as after a Dragon Dance, it can 2HKO Calm Mega Venusaur while still harming Celebi, Garchomp, and Dragonite.

Bounce is also a viable alternative to use on this set, the purpose being to bypass Mega Venusaur and Celebi as Gyarados in order to help Mega Gyarados sweep later in the game. After Stealth Rock, a +1 Bounce is capable of OHKOing Mega Venusaur 50% of the time and will also OHKO Bold Celebi.

224 Speed EVs allow Gyarados to outspeed Timid Noivern after a boost, with while the remaining are placed EVs into HP for a little extra bulk. Max Speed with 4 EVs in Defense can also be used if you're afraid of opposing Gyarados. Intimidate is the recommended ability with this set as Gyarados and Mega Gyarados appreciate the Attack drop provided by Intimidate to maximize Gyarados's tanking capability while it uses Dragon Dance. Moxie, though not necessarily the best ability, is great for punishing opponents that use sacrifices to safely switch into their Gyarados check. Since Gyarados doesn't need to immediately Mega-Evolve, Moxie can be utilized to give Mega Gyarados some extra power while lowering the number of Dragon Dances it needs to set up.

Usage Tips
========

Gyarados has a very flexible Mega Evolution. Staying as regular Gyarados to utilize Intimidate and Flying-type's great resistances can help ease setting up for Mega Gyarados. Since Mega Gyarados will usually draw in attacks such as Keldeo's Secret Sword and Genesect's U-turn, Gyarados can delay Mega-Evolving in order to set up on some of Mega Gyarados's weaknesses that opponents may attempt to target. This can work also the other way, with Gyarados using its Flying typing to bait for a free Dragon Dance as Mega Gyarados. For example, Gyarados can switch into Landorus-T and Mega Evolve to take laughable damage from Stone Edge. Another great example is stalling out Gyarados's Mega Evolution to lure in Rotom-W and then immediately Mega-Evolve to shut it down with a Mold Breaker Earthquake. Mega Gyarados has awesome bulk and can take emergency attacks at full health. Gyarados can fool Choice Scarf Genesect into using Thunderbolt, as after Gyarados Mega Evolves, it takes a maximum of 53% damage from Thunderbolt and it can OHKO Genesect back with a +1 Waterfall. When utilizing Moxie, Gyarados should be held back and used later in the game or when the opponent has a significant number of Pokemon to use as death fodder. Moxie should be stacked up as much as Gyarados possibly can before Mega Evolving as it will lose Moxie for Mold Breaker. The chosen coverage move is crucial to determining what Gyarados will need eliminated before it can attempt to sweep. Remember that Mega Gyarados's number one counter is Ferrothorn. Unless Gyarados is utilizing Bounce, Ferrothorn being either weakened or eliminated is an absolute must for Gyarados to attempt to sweep.

Team Options
========

Mega Gyarados is a Pokemon that has a very strong offensive presence, but, as always, it appreciates support from other Pokemon. Mega Gyarados is an excellent late game cleaner so packing heavily offensive Pokemon such as Kyurem-B is a good idea. Kyurem-B can easily plow through many of Gyarados's checks and counters with Fusion Bolt and its STAB Ice Beam. Latios can also puncture problematic Water-types and does well against Mega Venusaur thanks to STAB Psyshock, and it can also provide support with Defog. Thanks to Hidden Power Fire, Skarmory and Ferrothorn become less of an issue. For removing entry hazards, consider Starmie for Rapid Spin and its ability to take on bulky Water-types and Mega Venusaur. For Defog users, Latias, Scizor, and Zapdos all work well. Latias and Zapdos do well at beating bulky Water-types. Latias can handle Mega Venusaur while Scizor can utilize its STAB U-turn to help Gyarados switch in.

Bulky Dragon Dance

move 2: Dragon Dance
move 3: Waterfall
move 4: Bounce / Earthquake
ability: Intimidate
item: Leftovers
evs: 120 HP / 64 Atk / 100 Def / 224 Spe
nature: Adamant

Moves
========

Taunt does an excellent job of shutting down recovery and stopping moves such as Will-O-Wisp, Thunder Wave, and Toxic from hampering Gyarados's sweep, while also preventing Roar and Whirlwind from forcing Gyarados out. Specifically, Taunt is great for threats such as Skarmory, Gliscor, Trevenant, and Gourgeist as the majority of their moveset is dependent on support moves such as Substitute, Roost, Whirlwind, and Will-O-Wisp. Substitute functions by preventing status from hampering Gyarados, blocking weak attacks to ease setting up Dragon Dance, obtaining extra recovery from Leftovers, and preventing Gyarados from being easy to revenge kill. Bounce is Gyarados's best option for its attack. Bounce allows Gyarados to bypass its biggest counters - Mega Venusaur and Celebi - while the charge-up turn allows Gyarados to obtain extra health from Leftovers and protect its Substitute. Taunt and Bounce are great together because Taunt completely shuts down the opponent's attempts at blocking Bounce through Substitute or Protect. Though Bounce is superior in most scenarios, Earthquake can be used to guarantee OHKOing -1 Mega Lucario while bypassing any King's Shield mind games from Aegislash. Stone Edge is an option to beat opposing Gyarados, Kyurem-B, and Rotom-W more easily.

Set Details
========

The given EVs allow +1 Speed Gyarados to outspeed Timid Noivern. Furthermore, the HP and Defense EVs allow Gyarados to withstand a U-turn from Choice Scarf Genesect and a burned Ferrothorn's Power Whip while behind a Substitute. It also prevents many Water-types such as Choice Scarf Keldeo locked onto Surf, any Gastrodon, and Slowbro without Psyshock from breaking through Gyarados's Substitutes. Best of all, Gyarados is guaranteed to survive a +1 Close Combat from Jolly Mega Lucario and heavily dent it with a STAB Waterfall or OHKO it with Earthquake. The remaining EVs are placed into Attack to help Gyarados's attacks hit reasonably hard after a single Dragon Dance. With Stealth Rock, a +1 Bounce can OHKO Calm Mega Venusaur, offensive Celebi, and max HP Conkeldurr. Gyarados can opt to go slower in exchange for extra power. After a Dragon Dance, 176 Speed EVs guarentee that Gyarados will outspeed Timid Starmie.

Usage Tips
========

Bulky Dragon Dance Gyarados is a very flexible Pokemon due to its both offensive and defensive prowess. The choice between Substitute and Taunt is very crucial to knowing how to succeed with Gyarados setting up Dragon Dance. Taunt means running a few more risks with Dragon Tail, Scald, and Lava Plume; however, Substitute is still vulnerable to Roar, Whirlwind, and having Bounce blocked by Protect, Substitute, and King's Shield. Gyarados can switch into a variety of offensive and defensive Pokemon and begin setting up. With Taunt, Gyarados can switch into an opposing Skarmory and Taunt it to prevent it from using Whirlwind and Roost. Thanks to Intimidate and Gyarados's defensive EV spread, Brave Bird is a possible 5HKO, while Skarmory will continue to take recoil damage, making a 2HKO from a boosted Waterfall easier. Substitute is great against Pokemon such as Gastrodon that rely on status to cripple its opponents, letting Gyarados continuously set up Dragon Dance. Best of all, Substitute can make Gyarados more difficult to revenge kill . If you desperately need this Gyarados to check Mega Lucario and Dragon Dance Mega Charizard X while still dealing maximum damage to them, opt for Earthquake over Bounce and seek out teammates that can take out Mega Venusaur and Celebi.

Team Options
========

This variation of Gyarados works exceptionally well on balanced teams that combine offensive and defensive Pokemon. Mega Venusaur is a great defensive Grass-types that can harass a lot of Gyarados's checks and counters with its great defenses and solid movepool. It can use its STAB Sludge Bomb to hit Unaware Clefable, while STAB Giga Drain eliminates Rotom-W. Hidden Power Fire further helps ease the the burden on Gyarados by defeating Ferrothorn, and can also be used as an emergency check to Swords Dance Mega Lucario. Ferrothorn resists many of Gyarados's weaknesses while being able utilize its kit to help Gyarados remain bulky with Leech Seed, ensure KOes with Stealth Rock, or slow down opponents with Thunder Wave. Bulky Water-types with Scald or Will-O-Wisp are great for luring in Ferrothorn to help Gyarados set up on those that rely on Power Whip. Rotom-W and Jellicent are great examples, as they can immediately burn Ferrothorn with Will-O-Wisp. Scald also can be used on Starmie to be used as a lure for Ferrothorn. Latias, Scizor, and Zapdos are great users of Defog. Scizor and Zapdos can use their STAB U-turn and Volt Switch, respectively, to pivot to Gyarados to help it set up. Latios is an offensive alternative to Latias for using Defog as it can leave dents in or KO various Pokemon such as Mega Venusaur, Ferrothorn, and Skarmory. Latias can utilize its supportive movepool which contains Reflect, Light Screen, Wish, and Healing Wish to aid Gyarados and use its STAB Psyshock to prevent Mega Venusaur from bullying Gyarados. Thanks to Magnet Pull, Magnezone is great way of completely removing Steel-type threats such as Skarmory and Ferrothorn.

Offensive Dragon Dance
########
name: Offensive Dragon Dance
move 1: Dragon Dance

move 3: Earthquake
move 4: Bounce / Stone Edge
ability: Moxie
item: Life Orb / Lum Berry
nature: Adamant / Jolly
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

Moves
========

This Gyarados set trades any attempt at being bulky for pure offensive might. Waterfall is your primary STAB while Earthquake tackles grounded Electric-types and does great damage on threats such as Jirachi and Aegislash. Bounce is the best option for Gyarados's final move to help it bypass Celebi, Mega Venusaur, as well as dent bulky Water-types such as Jellicent and Gastrodon.

Set Details
========

This is a great way to set up a second Dragon Dance if Genesect comes in too revenge kill.

Usage Tips
========

When using this set it is best to use Gyarados as either a late game sweeper or a Pokemon that can create dents in the opponent's team mid-game. Thus, you want your opponent to save Pokemon as potential sacrifices for Gyarados to give it extra boosts in Attack thanks to Moxie. Though it may seem questionable to use Gyarados as a Pokemon that punches holes instead of sweeping through the opponent's team, other Pokemon such as Mega Lucario can take advantage of weakened threats and sweep through the remaining Pokemon. This is partly because this Gyarados should not attempt to set up too many Dragon Dances. Instead, this set wants to take advantage of one or two boosts and then utilize Moxie for the remaining attacking power that Gyarados might need. Life Orb is highly recommended due to the sheer power that Gyarados can have even after a single Dragon Dance. A Lum or Wacan Berry can be used instead to help Gyarados obtain a second Dragon Dance or to safely 2HKO potential threats that rely on status or Electric-type attacks to stop it.

Team Options
========

This variation of Gyarados appreciates powerful Pokemon that can pierce through teams and weaken them significantly to help Gyarados finish them off. Kyurem-B is a great example as it can handle Rotom-W with Substitute and Earth Power, Skarmory and bulky Water-types with Fusion Bolt, and it can at least threaten Mega Venusaur and physically defensive Ferrothorn with its STAB Ice Beam. Since this Gyarados doesn't use Gyaradosite, various Mega Evolutions can help beat holes through the opponents team. Nasty Plot Mega Lucario can put massive pressure on Skarmory and Ferrothorn with its STAB Aura Sphere. Mega Charizard X can utilize Flare Blitz to burst through Skarmory and Ferrothorn while heavily damaging bulky Water-types such as Rotom-W with Dragon Claw. Entry hazard removal is very vital. Starmie can spin away hazards and wear out bulky Water-types, Skarmory, and Mega Venusaur, while Latias, Scizor, and Zapdos are great Defog teammates . Latias can Defog for Gyarados while using its STAB Psyshock to harass Mega Venusaur. Zapdos can use STAB Thunderbolt or Volt Switch to tackle bulky Water-types. Scizor can utilize U-turn to help Gyarados pivot in easier. Latios is a great offensive teammate with Gyarados as it can also utilize Defog to clear out Stealth Rock while punishing Mega Venusaur with Psyshock, as well as Skarmory and Ferrothorn with Hidden Power Fire.

RestTalk
########
name: RestTalk
move 1: Waterfall
move 2: Roar / Dragon Tail
move 3: Rest
move 4: Sleep Talk
ability: Intimidate
item: Leftovers
evs: 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 Def
nature: Impish

Moves
========

This set's purpose is mainly to utilize Intimidate and Gyarados's great typing and bulk as a defensive status absorber. With Rest and Sleep Talk, Gyarados can remove status, keep itself healthy, and not be completely vulnerable while staying asleep. Waterfall is the mandatory STAB move and helps Gyarados check potential threats such as Mega Lucario, Heatran, and Talonflame. Roar and Dragon Tail keeps Gyarados from being setup bait. Alternatively, Roar can be used in order to bypass Substitute and Fairy-types. Dragon Tail will ignore Taunt and is Gyarados's best attack against Mega Charizard X. Earthquake is a viable alternative if you feel Gyarados needs to eliminate Mega Lucario immediately while also 2HKOing max HP Mega Mawile after Stealth Rock.

Set Details
========

The given EVs and nature maximize Gyarados's physical bulk while using Intimidate to cripple physical threats such as Mega Lucario, Mega Charizard X, and Talonflame. Leftovers is necessary on this set to keep Gyarados healthy.

Usage Tips
========

This set takes advantage of Gyarados's bulk, - not its offenses. This Gyarados is great at taking on offensive threats such as Mega Lucario and Talonflame. Gyarados is guaranteed to survive +2 Close Combat from Mega Lucario while dealing 62% minimum to it after the Defense drop. What's great about this Gyarados is that it can remain healthy most of the time and repeatedly switch in and out of the opponent while using Intimidate to weaken physical attackers. Removal of Stealth Rock is necessary to help Gyarados tank threats as much as possible.

Team Options
========

Stealth Rock is a great way of punishing the opposing Pokemon when shuffling them with Roar or Dragon Tail. Ferrothorn is a good teammate as it can lay down Stealth Rock to help Gyarados when it's phazing, spread paralysis to completely cripple offensive threats, and use Leech Seed to help Gyarados passively recover on some targets. Rapid Spin from Starmie works well at eliminating potential offensive threats and some defensive targets. Since Dragon Tail can be a liability against Fairy-types, Excadrill can be used to KO them with its STAB Iron Head while spinning away entry hazards. Mega Venusaur is also a great teammate because Gyarados's Intimidate can help it tank otherwise dangerous threats such as other Gyarados, Rotom-W, and Azumarill. Using another Pokemon with Intimidate such as Landorus-T and Krookodile can be great to scare off physically offensive threats or make them hit significantly weaker than normal.

Other Options
########

Choice Band and Choice Scarf can be used on Gyarados with Moxie as the ability. While having an immediate boost to power or Speed and using Moxie to help boost Gyarados's Attack may seem appealing, it is restricted to one attack and Waterfall isn't powerful enough without rain to be used as a standalone attack most of the time.

########

**Bulky Grass-types**: Without Bounce or Ice Fang, Gyarados is prone to Grass-types hampering its sweep. Ferrothorn, Trevenant, Gourgeist, Mega Venusaur, and Celebi are the best examples as all of these have methods of crippling Gyarados or stopping its sweep. Ferrothorn is arguably the best counter to Gyarados thanks to its great typing and Power Whip, access to Stealth Rock, and capability of crippling Gyarados with Leech Seed or Thunder Wave. Ferrothorn's ability also is a major thorn to Gyarados since Waterfall, Bounce, Bite, and Ice Fang are all contact moves. With Substitute, Gourgeist and Trevenant can stall out Bounce and can break Gyarados's Substitute with a STAB Horn Leech or Seed Bomb.

Vaporeon is a huge nuisance to Gyarados as it can use Wish and Protect to stall out Bounce and cripple Gyarados with status. Unaware Quagsire can threaten Gyarados as it ignores all of its stat boosts. Jellicent can immediately burn Gyarados with Will-O-Wisp to prevent being 2HKOed by the offensive Dragon Dance set. However, it can still be threatened by Mega Gyarados and the Bulky Dragon Dance set.

Skarmory is only 2HKOed by a +1 Mega Gyarados's Aqua Tail or a +1 Life Orb Gyarados's Waterfall. While Taunt sets can screw up Skarmory, without it, Skarmory is capable of setting up Stealth Rock to limit Gyarados's opportunities to switch-in, Spikes to hamper Mega Gyarados's switches, Roost to alleviate taken damage, or Whirlwind to phase it out. It can also just attack Gyarados with its STAB Brave Bird. Mega Aggron can shrug off a boosted Earthquake from regular Gyarados thanks to Filter and set up Curse in front of it. It can also use Roar to phaze out Gyarados, cripple it with a status move, or use Taunt to prevent Gyarados from setting up further. Clefable is great as it can use Unaware to block non-Mega Gyarados's boosts while 3HKOing most Gyarados with a STAB Moonblast. Clefable can Encore Gyarados while it uses Dragon Dance or Substitute and cripple with status or allow a free switch to a partner.

**Choice Scarf Users**: Choice Scarf Pokemon - Genesect in particular - can end Gyarados's sweep. It can use Thunderbolt to OHKO regular Gyarados or its STAB U-turn against Mega Gyarados. Garchomp and Landorus-T can threaten regular Gyarados with Stone Edge while both have access to STAB Earthquake to hit Mega Gyarados. Rotom-W can outspeed +1 Gyarados and shut it down with a STAB Volt Switch. Terrakion and Keldeo both outspeed +1 Gyarados and can OHKO with Stone Edge and Hidden Power Electric, respectively.

Overview

Roar and Dragon Tail compliment Gyarados's typing and bulky defensive stats to pull off a defensive moveset with Rest and Sleep Talk.

Though Mega Gyarados obtains weakness to many notable weaknesses moves such as Mach Punch and U-turn, Mega Gyarados also loses its nasty quadruple weakness to Electric-type attacks.

Though Bounce is superior in most scenarios on this set Earthquake can be used to guarantee OHKOing -1 Mega Lucario while bypassing any King's Shield mind game from Aegislash. Stone Edge is an option to beat opposing Gyarados, Kyurem-B, and Rotom-W easier.

The given EVs allow +1 Gyarados to outspeed Timid Noivern. Furthermore, the HP and Def EVs allow Gyarados to withstand a U-turn from Choice Scarf Genesect and burned Ferrothorn's Power Whip while behind a Substitute. It also prevents many Water-types such as Scarf Keldeo locked onto Surf, Gastrodon, and Slowbro missing Psyshock from breaking through Gyarados's Substitute. Best of all Gyarados is guaranteed to take +1 Close Combat from Jolly Mega Lucario and heavily dent it with STAB Waterfall or OHKO it with Earthquake. The remaining EVs are placed into Attack to help Gyarados's attack still hit reasonably hard after a single Dragon Dance. With Stealth Rock +1 Bounce can OHKO Calm Mega Venusaur, offensive Celebi, and max HP Conkeldurr. Gyarados can opt to go slower in exchange for extra power. After a Dragon Dance 176 Speed EVs guarantees outspeeding positive Speed natured Starmie.

Usage Tips
========

Bulky Dragon Dance Gyarados is a very flexible Pokemon due to its offensive and defensive prowess. The choice of Substitute and Taunt is very crucial to knowing how to succeed with Gyarados setting up Dragon Dance. Taunt means running a few more risks with Dragon Tail, Scald, and Lava Plume; however, Substitute is still vulnerable to Roar, Whirlwind, and Bounce being blocked by Protect, Substitute, and King's Shield. Gyarados can switch into a variety of offensive and defensive Pokemon and begin setting up. With Taunt Gyarados can switch into opposing Skarmory and Taunt to prevent Skarmory from using Whirlwind and Roost. Thanks to Intimidate and Gyarados's defensive EV spread Brave Bird is a possible 5HKO while Skarmory will continue to take recoil and make a 2HKO from boosted Waterfall easier. Substitute is great against Pokemon such as Gastrodon which relies on status to cripple its opponents and continuously set up Dragon Dance. Best of all Substitute can make it difficult to revenge kill Gyarados. If you desperately need this Gyarados to check Mega Lucario and Dragon Dance Mega Charizard X while doing maximum damage to them opt for Earthquake over Bounce and seek out Pokemon that can take out Mega Venusaur and Celebi.

Team Options
========

This variation of Gyarados works exceptionally well on balanced teams that combine offensive and defensive Pokemon. Mega Venusaur is a great defensive Grass-types that can harass a lot of Gyarados's checks and counters with its great defenses and solid movepool. It can use STAB Sludge Bomb for Unaware Clefable while STAB Giga Drain eliminates Rotom-W. Hidden Power Fire helps ease the the burden on Gyarados bypassing Ferrothorn as well as being used as an emergency check to Swords Dance Mega Lucario. Ferrothorn resists many of Gyarados's weaknesses while being able utilize its kit to aid Gyarados remain bulky with Leech Seed, ensure KOes with Stealth Rock, or slow opponents down with Thunder Wave. Bulky Water-types with Scald or Will-O-Wisp are great for luring Ferrothorn to help Gyarados set up on Ferrothorn that rely on Power Whip. Rotom-W and Jellicent are great examples that can immediately burn Ferrothorn with Will-O-Wisp. Trevenant and Gourgeist are great examples of Pokemon that can use Will-O-Wisp and / or Leech Seed to aid Gyarados. Starmie can spin away Stealth Rock while handling Skarmory and Mega Venusaur with Thunderbolt and STAB Psyshock, respectively. Scald also can be used on Starmie to be used as a lure to Ferrothorn. Latias, Scizor, and Zapdos are great users of Defog. Scizor and Zapdos can use STAB U-turn and STAB Volt Switch, respectively, to pivot to Gyarados to help it set up. Latios is an offensive alternative to Latias to use Defog as it can leave dents and KO various Pokemon such as Mega Venusaur, Ferrothorn, and Skarmory. Latias can utilize its supportive movepool such as Reflect, Light Screen, Wish, and Healing Wish to aid Gyarados and use STAB Psyshock to prevent Mega Venusaur from bullying Gyarados. Thanks to Magnet Pull Magnezone is great way of completely removing threats such as Skarmory and Ferrothorn altogether.

Offensive Dragon Dance
########
name: Offensive Dragon Dance
move 1: Dragon Dance
move 2: Waterfall
move 3: Earthquake
move 4: Bounce / Stone Edge
ability: Moxie
item: Life Orb / Lum Berry
nature: Adamant / Jolly
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

Moves
========

This Gyarados trades any attempt at bulking Gyarados out to become purely offensive. Waterfall is your primary STAB while Earthquake tackles grounded Electric-types and does great damage on threats such as Jirachi and Aegislash. Bounce is the best option for Gyarados's final move to help bypass Celebi, Mega Venusaur, and dent bulky Water-types such as Jellicent and Gastrodon. Stone Edge can be used to eliminate Zapdos, Dragonite, and Mandibuzz. Aqua Tail is a stronger yet slightly more inaccurate alternative to Waterfall. With Life Orb and Stealth Rock +1 Aqua Tail can OHKO Mega Mawile, max HP Scizor, and Mega Charizard X.

Set Details
========

Adamant with max Attack and Speed is recommended for this set to help maximize Gyarados's tyranny. The ability choice is tricky because they both are very good for this set. Life Orb is great for maximizing Gyarados's power and 2HKOing Skarmory with +1 Waterfall. Lum Berry is an alternative item to protect Gyarados from harmful status such as burns and paralysis. Wacan Berry is a good item option to assist Gyarados setting up Dragon Dance too. For example Scarf Genesect's Thunderbolt will fail to OHKO Gyarados even after Stealth Rock. This is a great way to set up a second Dragon Dance if Genesect is coming in on the revenge kill. Intimidate is a viable ability to help Gyarados set up Dragon Dance; however, Moxie is very good with this set as Gyarados wants to set up as minimal amount of Dragon Dances as possible.

Usage Tips
========

When using this set it is best to use this Gyarados as either a late game sweeper or a Pokemon that can create dents in the opponent's team mid game. Thus you want your opponent to save Pokemon as potential sacs for Gyarados to give Gyarados with Moxie extra boosts in Attack. Though it may seem questionable to use Gyarados as a Pokemon that dents holes instead of sweeping through the opponent's teams, other Pokemon such as Mega Lucario can take advantage of weakened threats and sweep through the rest of the entire team. This is partly because this set should not attempt to set up multiple Dragon Dances. Instead, this set wants to take advantage of either one or two boosts and then utilize Moxie for the remaining Attack power that Gyarados might need. Life Orb is highly recommended due to the sheer power that Gyarados can have even after a single Dragon Dance. If you are utilizing Lum Berry or Wacan Berry as alternative items these items can be used to help Gyarados obtain a second Dragon Dance or to safely 2HKO potential threats that rely on status or Electric-type attacks to stop Gyarados.

Team Options
========

This variation of Gyarados appreciates powerful Pokemon that can puncture through teams and weaken them significantly to help Gyarados finish them off. Kyurem-B is a great example as it can handle Rotom-W with Substitute + Earth Power, Skarmory and bulky Water-types with Fusion Bolt, and can at least threaten Mega Venusaur and weaken physically defensive Ferrothorn with STAB Ice Beam. Since this Gyarados doesn't use Gyaradosite Mega Evolutions can help with beating holes through the opponents team. Nasty Plot Mega Lucario can place major press onto Skarmory and Ferrothorn with STAB Aura Sphere. Mega Charizard X can utilize its STAB Flare Blitz to burst through Skarmory and Ferrothorn while heavily damaging bulky Water-types such as Rotom-W with STAB Dragon Claw. Entry hazard removal is very vital. Starmie can spin away hazards and wear out bulky Water-types, Skarmory, and Mega Venusaur. while Latias, Scizor, and Zapdos are great Defog teammates that can assist Gyarados. Latias can Defog for Gyarados while using STAB Psyshock to harass Mega Venusaur. Zapdos can use STAB Thunderbolt or STAB Volt Switch to tackle bulky Water-types. Scizor can utilize STAB U-turn to help Gyarados pivot in easier. Latios is a great offensive teammate with Gyarados as it can also utilize Defog to clear out Stealth Rock while punishing Mega Venusaur with STAB Psyshock and Skarmory and Ferrothorn with Hidden Power Fire.

RestTalk
########
name: RestTalk
move 1: Waterfall
move 2: Roar / Dragon Tail
move 3: Rest
move 4: Sleep Talk
ability: Intimidate
item: Leftovers
evs: 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 Def
nature: Impish

Moves
========

This set's purpose is mainly to utilize Intimidate and Gyarados's great typing and bulk as a status absorber and a defensive Pokemon. With Rest and Sleep Talk Gyarados can remove status, keep itself healthy, and not be completely prone while staying asleep. Waterfall is mandatory STAB and helps Gyarados check potential threats such as Mega Lucario, Heatran, and Talonflame. Roar and Dragon Tail keeps Gyarados from becoming setup bait. Roar will bypass Substitute and Fairy-types. Dragon Tail will bypass Taunt as well as being Gyarados's best attack against Mega Charizard X. Earthquake is a viable alternative if you feel Gyarados needs to eliminate Mega Lucario immediately while 2HKOing max HP Mega Mawile after Stealth Rock.

Set Details
========

The given EVs and nature maximize Gyarados's bulk while using Intimidate to cripple physical threats such as Mega Lucario, Mega Charizard X, and Talonflame. Leftovers is necessary on this set to keep Gyarados healthy.

Usage Tips
========

This set takes advantage of Gyarados's bulk - not its offenses. This Gyarados is great to tackle offensive threats such as Mega Lucario and Talonflame. Gyarados is guaranteed to survive +2 Close Combat from Mega Lucario while dealing 62% minimum to -1 Mega Lucario. What's great about this Gyarados is that it can remain healthy most of the time and repeatedly switch in and out of the opponent while using Intimidate to weaken physical attackers. Removal of Stealth Rock is necessary to help Gyarados tank threats as much as possible.

Team Options
========

Stealth Rock is a great way of punishing Pokemon while shuffling with Roar or Dragon Tail. Ferrothorn is a cool teammate because it can lay Stealth Rock to help Gyarados when using Roar or Dragon Tail, paralysis to completely cripple offensive threats, and Leech Seed to help Gyarados passively recover on some targets. Rapid Spin from Starmie works well by eliminating potential offensive threats and some defensive targets. Since Dragon Tail can be a liability against Fairy-types Excadrill can be used to execute them with STAB Iron Head while spinning away entry hazards. Mega Venusaur is also a great teammate because it can rely on Gyarados's Intimidate to help tank otherwise dangerous threats such as other Gyarados, Rotom-W, and Azumarill.

While having immediate power or Speed and using Moxie to help boost Gyarados's Attack may seem appealing, it is restricted to one attack and STAB Waterfall isn't powerful enough without Rain to use as a standalone attack most of the time. A bulkier set with Thunder Wave or Toxic, Taunt, Waterfall, and Roar or Dragon Tail can be used with Wish and cleric support. Thunder Wave can cripple some of Gyarados's offensive threats while Toxic wears down defensive threats. Though it requires a Lonely or Naughty nature Fire Blast is Gyarados's fastest way of eliminating Ferrothorn and 2HKOing Skarmory.

Checks & Counters
########

**Bulky Grass-types**: Without Bounce and Ice Fang Gyarados is prone to Grass-types hampering its sweep. Ferrothorn, Trevenant, Gourgeist, Mega Venusaur, and Celebi are the best examples as all of these have methods of crippling Gyarados or stopping Gyarados's sweep. Ferrothorn is arguably the best counter to Gyarados thanks to its awesome typing, STAB Power Whip, access to Stealth Rock, and capable of crippling Gyarados with Leech Seed or Thunder Wave. Ferrothorn's ability also is a major thorn to Gyarados since STAB Waterfall, STAB Bounce, STAB Bite, and Ice Fang are contact moves. With Substitute Gourgeist and Trevenant can stall out Bounce and can break Gyarados's Substitute with STAB Horn Leech or STAB Seed Bomb. Will-O-Wisp can cripple Gyarados as well. Mega Gyarados can use Bite to bypass these threats. Mega Venusaur and Celebi are more prone to Bounce and, in Celebi's case, Bite and Ice Fang. With STAB Giga Drain they can completely stop Gyarados's sweep while recovering health.

**Bulky Water-types**: Rotom-W is a great check to regular Gyarados thanks to access to STAB Volt Switch and Will-O-Wisp to cripple Gyarados. Vaporeon is a huge nuisance to Gyarados as it can use Wish + Protect to stall out Bounce and cripple Gyarados with status. Unaware Quagsire can threaten Gyarados thanks to Unaware ignoring all stat boosts. Jellicent can immediately burn Gyarados with Will-O-Wisp and prevent being 2HKOed by offensive Dragon Dance Gyarados. Mega Gyarados and Bulky Dragon Dance Gyarados can scare Jellicent, though.

**Physical Walls**: Physical walls such as Mandibuzz, Skarmory, and Mega Aggron can give Gyarados a lot of trouble. Mandibuzz can beat any Gyarados without Stone Edge while +1 Foul Play will OHKO any offensive Gyarados. Bulky sets can be phazed out with Whirlwind and, without Stealth Rock, Mega Gyarados will fail to 2HKO with STAB Waterfall. Skarmory is only 2HKOed by +1 Mega Gyarados Aqua Tail or +1 Life Orb Gyarados Waterfall. Taunt sets can screw up Skarmory as well; however, Skarmory is capable of setting up Stealth Rock to limit Gyarados's opportunities to switch-in, Spikes to hamper Mega Gyarados, Roost off damage taken, phase out with Whirlwind, or just attack Gyarados with STAB Brave Bird. Mega Aggron can shrug off boosted Earthquake from regular Gyarados thanks to Filter and set up Curse in front of Gyarados. Be wary of Mold Breaker Earthquake from Mega Gyarados - +1 Earthquake 2HKOes Mega Aggron. Mega Aggron can carry Stone Edge or phase it out with Roar or Dragon Tail. Umbreon can withstand +1 Waterfall from regular Gyarados and OHKO back with STAB Foul Play. It can use Roar to phase out Gyarados, cripple it with status or Taunt to prevent Gyarados from setting up. Clefable is great as it can use Unaware to block non-Mega Gyarados's boosts while 3HKOing most Gyarados with STAB Moonblast. Clefable can Encore Gyarados while it uses Dragon Dance or Substitute and cripple with status.

**Scarf-users**: Scarf Pokemon - Genesect in particular - can hamper Gyarados's sweep. It can use Thunderbolt to OHKO regular Gyarados while using STAB U-turn against Mega Gyarados. Garchomp and Landorus-T can threaten regular Gyarados with Stone Edge while both have access to STAB Earthquake against Mega Gyarados. Rotom-W can outspeed +1 Gyarados and shut it down with STAB Volt Switch. Terrakion and Keldeo both outspeed +1 Gyarados and can OHKO with Stone Edge and Hidden Power Electric, respectively.

Colonel M, my sincerest of apologies for the delays. I expected to get this finished up before the long weekend, however, I severely underestimated the length of this analysis and my ability to complete it in time. As the weekend in question happened to be the last one before midterms started, I pretty much went the entire time without any internet access in order to study efficiently. The check in my previous post is now complete, thank you for your patience.

I would like to mention that 232 Spe should be mentioned as an option on the Mega DD set, it lets you outspeed weavile after the DD (crucial since it can revenge you with Low Kick otherwise).

Overview
########

With a base 125 Attack stat and access to Dragon Dance, (add comma) Gyarados is a Pokemon that boasts being is an offensive powerhouse. Thanks to its typing which gives it resistances to numerous common attacks such as Close Combat and U-turn and two excellent abilities in Intimidate and Moxie, (add comma) Gyarados can easily set up and tear massive holes in teams. That's not all, though - Gyarados's great defensive typing and access to Intimidate allows Gyarados to easily set up Dragon Dance or become a wall. Roar and Dragon Tail compliment Gyarados's typing and bulky defensive stats to pull a defensive moveset with Rest and Sleep Talk. The sheer versatility Gyarados offers is not to be underestimated when building teams around Gyarados. Bear in mind Gyarados's middling Speed, even after a Dragon Dance, can leave it prone to revenge killers such as Scarf Genesect, Scarf Terrakion, and Deoxys-S. The weakness to Stealth Rock can also be crippling as it hampers Gyarados's longevity.

Thanks to Generation VI Gyarados was blessed with access to a Mega Evolution. Mega Gyarados swaps out its Flying-typing for Dark-type - allowing Mega Gyarados to set up on Pokemon that rely on using Stone Edge to take out Gyarados. Furthermore, Mega Gyarados's defensive stats significantly increase as well as its Attack. Mega Gyarados received significant buffs to attack and defense. Mold Breaker, its new ability, allows Mega Gyarados to punish Pokemon that rely on Levitate to dodge Earthquake, Storm Drain to block its monstrous STAB Waterfall, and piercing Unaware so that Clefable has a difficult time stopping it. Though Mega Gyarados obtains many notable weaknesses such as Mach Punch and U-turn Mega Gyarados also loses its nasty quadruple weakness to Electric-type attacks. Gyarados is a very flexible Pokemon both offensively and defensively and Mega Gyarados simply adds to the flexibility that Gyarados can provide to its team.

Moves
========

This set's goal is to set up Dragon Dance in order to let Mega Gyarados sweep opposing teams. STAB Waterfall is Gyarados's main STAB as it provides steady power, perfect accuracy, and a 20% flinch rate. Earthquake compliments Waterfall as it too has perfect accuracy, great power, and hits many targets that otherwise resist STAB Waterfall while also bypassing Aegislash's King's Shield. Thanks to Mega Gyarados's having access to Mold Breaker, (add comma) Earthquake can target multiple Levitate users such as Rotom-W and Gengar. Bite hits the majority of Gyarados's checks in and counters - in particular Jellicent, Celebi, Trevenant, Gourgeist, and Slowbro as are a few examples. Stone Edge is great for opposing Gyarados, Kyurem-B, Zapdos, and Dragonite. Substitute may seem like an odd option on a set that doesn't utilize Leftovers as an item; however, Substitute is great for helping Gyarados set up on targets such as Scizor and Gastrodon while making Gyarados difficult to becoming prone to being revenge killed by Scarf Genesect and Deoxys-S. giving Mega Gyarados an extra layer of protection against priority and revenge killers. Substitute can prevent Intimidate from lowering Gyarados's Attack as well as preventing moves such as Will-O-Wisp and Leech Seed from crippling Gyarados. Ice Fang, after a Dragon Dance, can 2HKO Calm Mega Venusaur while still harming Celebi, Garchomp, and Dragonite.

Bounce is also a viable alternative to use on this set. The purpose of Bounce is to bypass Mega Venusaur and Celebi as Gyarados to help Mega Gyarados sweep later in the game. After Stealth Rock +1 Bounce is capable of OHKOing Mega Venusaur 50% of the time and will also OHKO Bold Celebi.

Set Details
========

224 Spe EVs allow Gyarados to outspeed Timid Noivern while placing the remaining EVs into HP for a little extra bulk. Max Speed with 4 EVs in Defense can also be used if you're afraid of opposing Gyarados. Intimidate is the recommended ability with this set as Gyarados and Mega Gyarados appreciate the Attack drop provided by Intimidate to maximize Gyarados's bulk while using Dragon Dance. Moxie, though not necessarily the best ability, is great for punishing opponents that use sacs to safely switch into their Gyarados check. Since Gyarados doesn't immediately become Mega Gyarados, (add comma) Moxie can be utilized to give Mega Gyarados extra power while limiting the number of Dragon Dances necessary to set up. needed to sweep.

Usage Tips
========

Gyarados is a very flexible Mega Evolution case. and its Mega Evolution are very flexible. Staying as regular Gyarados to utilize Intimidate and Flying-types great resistances and immunity to Earthquake can help benefit setting up Mega Gyarados. Since Mega Gyarados will usually draw in attacks such as Keldeo's Secret Sword and Genesect's U-turn, Gyarados can stall out delay its Mega Evolution to set up on Pokemon that might be targetting to take out Mega Gyarados but not normal Gyarados. Even so, Gyarados can also use its Flying-type to bait for a free Dragon Dance as Mega Gyarados. For example, Gyarados can switch into Landorus-T and Mega Evolve to take laughable damage from Stone Edge. Another great example is stalling out delaying Gyarados's Mega Evolution to bait Rotom-W in then immediately Mega Evolving and shutting it down with Mold Breaker Earthquake. Mega Gyarados has awesome bulk and can take emergency attacks at full health. Gyarados can fool Scarf Genesect into using Thunderbolt as, when Gyarados Mega Evolves, proceeds to take 53% damage tops from Thunderbolt and OHKO Genesect back with +1 Waterfall. When utilizing Moxie, (add comma) Gyarados should be held back and used later in the game or when the opponent has a potentially significant amount of Pokemon to sac. Moxie should be stacked up as much as Gyarados possibly can before Mega Evolving as it will lose Moxie for Mold Breaker. The coverage move of choice is crucial to what Gyarados will need eliminated before it can attempt to sweep. Remember that Mega Gyarados's number one counter is Ferrothorn. Unless Gyarados is utilizing Bounce, (add comma) Mega Ferrothorn be either being weakened or cleared out is an absolute must before Gyarados can attempt to sweep.

Team Options
========

Mega Gyarados is a Pokemon that has with a very strong presence but, as always, appreciates back-up from other Pokemon. Mega Gyarados is an excellent late game cleaner so packing heavy offenses from Pokemon such as Kyurem-B is a good idea. Kyurem-B can plow through many of Gyarados's checks and counters easily with Fusion Bolt and STAB Ice Beam. Latios also can puncture problematic Water-types and while also doesing well against Mega Venusaur thanks to STAB Psyshock and can utilizeing Defog offensively. With Hidden Power Fire Skarmory and Ferrothorn become less of an issue. Talonflame is an excellent offensive teammate with access to Gale Wings Brave Bird taking out Conkeldurr and Breloom while using STAB Flare Blitz to roast Ferrothorn and Skarmory. Ferrothorn has multiple methods of supporting Gyarados through entry hazards, paralysis, and Leech Seed to help Gyarados recover health while setting up Dragon Dance. For removing entry hazards consider, (add comma) Starmie for Rapid Spin and ways of tackling bulky Water-types and Mega Venusaur. For Defog users Latias, Scizor, and Zapdos all work well. Latias and Zapdos do well at tackling bulky Water-types. Latias can handle Mega Venusaur while Scizor can utilize STAB U-turn to help Gyarados switch-in.

Moves
========

This set takes a different approach from Gyarados's full offensive sets. Gyarados utilizes its great typing, natural bulk, and Intimidate to set up multiple Dragon Dances and then attempt to sweep. Taunt and Substitute are the two moves of choice to help Gyarados set up Dragon Dances or and sweep easier. Taunt does an excellent job of shutting down recovery, stopping moves such as Will-O-Wisp, Thunder Wave, and Toxic from hampering Gyarados's sweep, and preventing Roar and Whirlwind from forcing Gyarados out. Taunt is great for threats such as Skarmory, Gliscor, Trevenant, and Gourgeist as the majority of their moveset is dependant on support moves such as Substitute, Roost, Whirlwind, and Will-O-Wisp. Substitute functions by preventing status from hampering Gyarados, blocking weak attacks to ease setting up Dragon Dance and obtain extra recovery from Leftovers, and while preventing Gyarados from being easy to revenge kill. Bounce is Gyarados's best option for its attack. Bounce allows Gyarados to bypass its biggest counters - Mega Venusaur and Celebi - while using Bounce to obtain extra health from Leftovers and protect Gyarados's Substitute. Taunt and Bounce are great because Taunt completely shuts down the option of blocking Bounce through Substitute or Protect.

If you are utilizing Lum Berry or Wacan Berry as alternative items, (add comma) these items can they be used to help Gyarados obtain a second Dragon Dance or to safely 2HKO potential threats that rely on status or Electric-type attacks to stop Gyarados.

Team Options
========

This variation of Gyarados appreciates powerful Pokemon that can puncture through teams and weaken them significantly to help Gyarados finish them off. Kyurem-B is a great example as it can handle Rotom-W with Substitute + Earth Power,; Skarmory and bulky Water-types with Fusion Bolt, and can at least threaten Mega Venusaur and weaken physically defensive Ferrothorn with STAB Ice Beam. Since this Gyarados doesn't use Gyaradosite, (add comma) Mega Evolutions can help with beating holes through the opponents team. Starmie can spin away hazards and wear out bulky Water-types, Skarmory, and Mega Venusaur., (add comma) while Latias, Scizor, and Zapdos are great Defog teammates that can assist Gyarados. Latias can Defog for Gyarados while using STAB Psyshock to harass Mega Venusaur., (add comma) while Zapdos can use STAB Thunderbolt or STAB Volt Switch to tackle bulky Water-types.
Ice beam does more than "at least threaten" mega venusaur since teravolt ignores thick fat, does around 60-70%~ atleast.

RestTalk

name: RestTalk
move 1: Waterfall
move 2: Roar / Dragon Tail
move 3: Rest
move 4: Sleep Talk
ability: Intimidate
item: Leftovers
evs: 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 Def
nature: Impish

Moves
========

Roar will bypass Substitute and Fairy-types., (add comma) while Dragon Tail will bypass Taunt as well as being Gyarados's best attack against Mega Charizard X. Earthquake is a viable alternative if you feel Gyarados needs to eliminate Mega Lucario immediately while 2HKOing max HP Mega Mawile after Stealth Rock.

Set Details
========

The given EVs and nature maximize Gyarados's bulk while using Intimidate to cripple physical threats such as Mega Lucario, Mega Charizard X, and Talonflame. Leftovers is necessary on this set to keep Gyarados healthy.

Usage Tips
========

========

Using another Pokemon with Intimidate such as Landorus-T and or Krookodile can be great to scare off physically offensive threats or make them hit significantly weaker than normal.

Other Options
########

Choice Band and Choice Scarf sets can be used on Gyarados with Moxie as the ability.

Ferrothorn, Trevenant, Gourgeist (-H or -S), Mega Venusaur, and Celebi are the best examples as all of these have methods of crippling Gyarados or stopping Gyarados's sweep. Ferrothorn is arguably the best counter to Gyarados thanks to its awesome typing, STAB Power Whip, access to Stealth Rock, and capable of crippling Gyarados with Leech Seed or Thunder Wave. Ferrothorn's ability also is a major thorn (hnnnnngggg) to Gyarados since STAB Waterfall, STAB Bounce, STAB Bite, and Ice Fang are contact moves. With Substitute Gourgeist and Trevenant can stall out Bounce and can break Gyarados's Substitute with STAB Horn Leech or STAB Seed Bomb. Will-O-Wisp can cripple Gyarados as well., (add comma) but Mega Gyarados can use Bite to bypass these threats.

Mega Gyarados and Bulky Dragon Dance Gyarados can scare out Jellicent, though.

Commas are good :P

It may be me, but I really don't understand what the EV's on the Bulky Dragon Dance set are doing, and they seem really inefficient. According to that paragraph, these are the things that they are designed to make Gyarados' Subs withstand:
  • Scarf Genesect's +1 U-turn
  • Burned Ferrothorn's Power Whip
  • Scarf Keldeo's Surf outside rain
  • Gastrodon's Surf (from some rare set I guess)
  • Slowbro's Surf (which it rarely uses ever)
The EV's also are supposed to allow it to take a +1 Jolly Mega Luke's Close Combat and live. However, all that and more can be achieved with a different EV spread of 88 HP / 184 Atk / 68 Def / 168 Spe and a Jolly nature. Here are calcs:
  • +1 4 Atk Genesect U-turn vs. 120 HP / 100 Def Gyarados: 72-84 (19.9 - 23.2%) -- possible 5HKO
  • +1 4 Atk Genesect U-turn vs. 88 HP / 68 Def Gyarados: 74-87 (20.9 - 24.6%) -- guaranteed 5HKO (up to 87 HP damage, and Gyarados' Subs are 88)
  • 0 Atk burned Ferrothorn Power Whip vs. 120 HP / 100 Def Gyarados: 66-78 (18.2 - 21.6%) -- possible 5HKO
  • 0 Atk burned Ferrothorn Power Whip vs. 88 HP / 68 Def Gyarados: 69-81 (19.5 - 22.9%) -- possible 5HKO
  • 252 SpA Keldeo Surf vs. 120 HP / 0 SpD Gyarados: 73-87 (20.2 - 24%) -- guaranteed 5HKO
  • 252 SpA Keldeo Surf vs. 88 HP / 0 SpD Gyarados: 73-87 (20.6 - 24.6%) -- guaranteed 5HKO (up to 87 HP damage, and Gyarados' Subs are 88)
  • 4 SpA Slowbro Scald vs. 120 HP / 0 SpD Gyarados: 43-51 (11.9 - 14.1%) -- possible 8HKO
  • 4 SpA Slowbro Scald vs. 88 HP / 0 SpD Gyarados: 43-51 (12.1 - 14.4%) -- possible 7HKO
For reference, even though it can't be helped as far as Subs are concerned:
  • 4 SpA Slowbro Psyshock vs. 120 HP / 100 Def Gyarados: 93-111 (25.7 - 30.7%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
  • 4 SpA Slowbro Psyshock vs. 88 HP / 68 Def Gyarados: 97-115 (27.4 - 32.5%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

In Gastrodon's case, it's different:
  • 252+ SpA Choice Specs Gastrodon Surf vs. 120 HP / 0 SpD Gyarados: 96-113 (26.5 - 31.3%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
  • 252+ SpA Choice Specs Gastrodon Surf vs. 88 HP / 0 SpD Gyarados: 96-113 (27.1 - 32%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
In no case is Gyarados' Sub surviving a Surf from Gastrodon, as only offensive ones use Surf. However, Scald gives it no problems either way:
  • 4 SpA Gastrodon Scald vs. 120 HP / 0 SpD Gyarados: 40-48 (11 - 13.2%) -- possible 8HKO
  • 4 SpA Gastrodon Scald vs. 88 HP / 0 SpD Gyarados: 40-48 (11.3 - 13.5%) -- possible 8HKO
The new EV spread achieves the same Substitute needs as the analysis EV spread, maintains the same Attack stat of 332, so the offensive calcs are also the same, and reaches enough Speed to now outspeed Jolteon and other base 130's after a single Dragon Dance. It also hits a Leftovers number for bonus recovery - something the previous spread does not.

The only thing that the new spread falls short of is surviving Mega Lucario's +1 Close Combat after Stealth Rock:
  • +1 252 Atk Adaptability Mega Lucario Close Combat vs. 120 HP / 100 Def Gyarados: 229-270 (63.4 - 74.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
  • +1 252 Atk Adaptability Mega Lucario Close Combat vs. 88 HP / 68 Def Gyarados: 238-280 (67.4 - 79.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
But let's be honest here. After February 9th, this calc will be irrelevant. As might the Genesect calc, but less likely from what I've seen in the discussions.

tl;dr, the EV spread should be changed to 88 HP / 184 Atk / 68 Def / 168 Spe and Jolly to maximize efficiency.

sorry about being so late but the last slot of dd mega gyara should be ice fang / taunt / bite IMO.

bite kinda blows and ice fangs utility in hitting shit like dnite is wayyy better. taunt is still cute for bulky waters and skarm and ferro etc too, bite can be slashed last for being "stab" still not that great tho

Ice fang lets you get past dragons, but really, that's it. Bite hits trevenant, gourgeist, ferrothron, and celebi harder than ice fang and ice fang isn't SE on mega venusaur anyway. Unless there are any other notable grasses I'm missing, that's it.
Ice fang only for dragons basically.

Taunt is indeed a cute idea, but water/ground coverage sucks, especially against your usual checks. It eases set up opppurtunities, but even though you have great bulk your typing isn't that great defensively and you're not getting any healing, so taunt is a decent idea on paper but its not too great in execution. You just give up too much coverage, you're better off having teammates to take advantage of bulky waters, like the mentioned kyu-b.

trevenant gorg and celebi are nonexistent (combined usage on 40? spl teams: once) and you don't beat ferrothorn / mega venu anyway

i'd much rather hit the omnipresent dragonite and some other very underrated oddities like salamence while still hitting lati@s and co.

I was about to hit the calc to see how much boosts mega gyarados needed to kill through multiscale.
Then I remembered mold breaker.
Aaaah what a great ability :]

Also, Bite still hits all these guys neutrally and hits whatever random grass type you may encounter, but getting past dragonite is important, so I can agree that ice fang deserves a slash, if not the primary.

I should start by saying that Gyarados has always been my favorite Pokemon but I pretty much abandoned his use in Gen VI after I was thoroughly disappointed by the Mega Evolution set. I pretty much stumbled upon the (very well done) analysis in this thread and decided to try out the Offensive DD set that you are referencing. Honestly, I have found it to be much better than the Mega set and one of the main reasons is LO. Here's the thing about this Gyarados. It isn't supposed to last forever. The EVs have sacrificed all of its bulk to begin with. It's an absolutely fabulous hole puncher. That's also why it prefers Adamant to Jolly. It doesn't really care what it hits so much as it cares that it gets a few good hits in on something. Moxie boosts are actually pretty easy to come by but even when it doesn't get one it still tends to do some rather severe damage.

For these reasons, moves such as Substitute and Ice Fang really don't even deserve mention. STAB Bounce will, at a minimum, put a huge dent in any of the OU dragons and for flying types only Mandibuzz and (possibly) Talonflame offer any real resistance to a Waterfall (Talonflame due to priority Brave Bird of course). But, again, you have to play this set with total reckless abandon. It is exceedingly rare that I ever switch Gyarados out once its in. I generally have it do what it does best - deal a shitload of damage and get out of the way so the rest of my team can clean up.

I noticed this in the Usage Tips section of the first set:
Unless Gyarados is utilizing Bounce Mega Ferrothorn either being weakened or cleared out is an absolute must before Gyarados can attempt to sweep.
I understand what you mean to say, but it's phrased a little awkwardly. I'm not QC, but if I could make a suggestion, I would suggest rephrasing it to:

"Unless Mega Gyarados is carrying Bounce, Ferrothorn must be weakened or cleared out before Gyarados can attempt to sweep."

Minor nitpick I know, but it bugged me nonetheless. However, this is an overall great analysis, so job well done.

Just a suggestion from personal experience but when using a non-attacking move like sub/taunt in the fourth slot, Return is a decent alternative to Earthquake. It cant hit stuff like Empoleon or Jellicent anymore and becomes less effective against Rotom-w but therefore it hits all kinds of grass and dragon types for neutral dmg especialy stuff like Celebi, Tangrowth and flying dragons like Dragonite, the latter can even be ohkoed at +1 after SR. And it still 2hkos rotom-w at + 1 with some prior dmg.

The only Pokemon you mentioned that are anything close to common threats in this metagame are Dragonite and Rotom-Wash. Any team utilizing a Gyarados set should have, at a minimum, one Rotom counter but really it should have more than one if possible. Gyarados should not be facing Rotom, period. As for Return > Earthquake for dealing with Celebi, Tangrowth, and Dragonite, all of them are hit for super-effective damage by Ice Fang and Empoleon and Jellicent aren't common enough to worry about but obviously if you're utilizing Gyarados you probably have a method for dealing with bulky Water-types anyway.

Also under Offensive DD, I don't know why Mega Venusaur is mentioned four times as a counter in the team options section but not once as a teammate. As written Mega Venusaur is not an issue for this set as one +1 STAB Bounce should be an OHKO (someone can run the calc to correct me but I believe that's true). However, Mega Venusaur is, in my mind, arguably the best teammate for that set. Mega Venusaur completely counters the ever common Rotom-Wash that is truly the biggest threat to Offensive DD Gyarados as even a Will-o-Wisp really doesn't bother it. Additionally, Mega Venusaur can soak up all the Electric attacks that Gyarados may be targeted with with ease, in turn forcing switches which helps Mega Venusaur to spam Leech Seed or Sludge Bomb for the possible poison or even opening up opportunities for a Synthesis. The two complement each other incredibly well. The only checks they have in common are Talonflame and Ferrothorn, neither of which are going to be feeling too good after an encounter with this Gyarados set.

I said explicitly that Return is ONLY for Sets with Taunt/Sub in the last slot so there will be no Icefang or any other additional coverage move. When using 3 Attacking moves EQ is better. Furthermore, for Mega Gyara, especialy for one using Substitute, Rotom-w isnt much of a threat. Mega Gyara can easily take a volt switch or even discharge and can avoid WOW by using taunt or by hiding behind a sub. Even if we ignore Celebi and Tangrowth, with Return you can still deal with rotom without too much trouble and you can also beat Dragonite. I think its at least worth mentioning.

I agree Gyarados shouldn't be facing rotom-w one-on-one because of the Will-O-Wisp and potential threat of thunderbolt/volt-switch. However if you have already set up doesn't EQ with mold breaker always one-shot Rotom-W? It has been such for me up to this point anyway.

I guess my point is that you cover all the threats you mentioned better with Ice Fang than Return but Return obviously has better coverage so that's a fair point. I should have probably been more clear that I'm speaking only of Gyarados without the Mega Evolution, which obviously has Mold Breaker to take care of Rotom-Wash. But since we were speaking specifically of the Taunt/Sub sets that was the context I was writing it in.

Yeah so I ran the damage calcs and Mega Venusaur needs to be removed from the Offensive DD set as a check that needs to be considered in teambuilding. Here are the damage calcs run against a max Def (a considerably rare set) Bold Mega Venusaur for +1 Bounce.

+1 252+ Atk Life Orb Gyarados Bounce vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mega Venusaur: 361-429 (99.1 - 117.8%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO
+1 252+ Atk Life Orb Gyarados Bounce vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mega Venusaur: 361-429 (99.1 - 117.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

Against a more common mixed set like the one currently offered on Smogon, it obviously only gets worse.

+1 252+ Atk Life Orb Gyarados Bounce vs. 252 HP / 88+ Def Mega Venusaur: 408-484 (112 - 132.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Even a completely unboosted attack against this set hits really hard. And for a Venusaur that is specifically specially defensive it's still an OHKO after Rocks.

252+ Atk Life Orb Gyarados Bounce vs. 252 HP / 88+ Def Mega Venusaur: 273-322 (75 - 88.4%) -- 12.5% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
252+ Atk Life Orb Gyarados Bounce vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Mega Venusaur: 322-382 (88.4 - 104.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

So Mega Venusaur shouldn't be mentioned as a viable check to that Gyarados set, especially considering that an unboosted attack from that set should be exceedingly rare. Rotom-Wash is a far, far superior check and is also the most commonly used Pokemon in the current OU metagame. So Team Options should focus on Pokemon that can take out Rotom-Wash, making Mega Venusaur a fabulous teammate but a downright awful check to that set. Earthquake doesn't hit Rotom-W at all and Waterfall even at +1 doesn't really do a whole lot to it. Here are the same damage calcs for +1 Waterfall and Bounce against Rotom-Wash.

+1 252+ Atk Life Orb Gyarados Waterfall vs. 248 HP / 216+ Def Rotom-W: 96-113 (31.6 - 37.2%) -- 88.8% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
+1 252+ Atk Life Orb Gyarados Bounce vs. 248 HP / 216+ Def Rotom-W: 101-121 (33.3 - 39.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

So that definitely needs to be fixed.

With so many Genesect and Mega Lucario mentions, this needed to be bumped now that they're gone.

Also, with Mega Manectric on the rise, I altered the EV spread of my previous post to 88 HP / 160 Atk / 64 Def / 196 Spe Jolly. While the same defensively, this still lets it take Keldeo's Surf and not have its Sub broken, while still taking Burned Ferrothorn. The Genesect's +1 U-turn mention just need to be removed, as well as that the current defensive spread being made to take on Mega Lucario's Close Combat.

Overview

That's not all, though - Gyarados's great defensive typing and access to Intimidate allows Gyarados allow it to easily set up Dragon Dance or become a wall. Roar and Dragon Tail compliment complement Gyarados's typing and bulky defensive stats to pull a defensive moveset with Rest and Sleep Talk. The sheer versatility Gyarados offers is not to be underestimated (I don't get it, do you mean overestimated?) when building teams around Gyarados this Pokemon. Bear in mind that Gyarados's middling Speed, even after a Dragon Dance, can leave it prone to revenge killers such as Scarf Genesect, Scarf Terrakion, and Deoxys-S. The weakness to Stealth Rock can also be crippling as it further hampers Gyarados's longevity.

Thanks to Generation VI, Gyarados was blessed with access to a Mega Evolution. (correct me if I'm wrong but shouldn't changes in generations be omitted?) Mega Gyarados swaps out its Flying-typing Flying-type for Dark-type - allowing Mega Gyarados to set up on Pokemon that rely on using Stone Edge to take out Gyarados its normal form. Furthermore, Mega Gyarados's defensive stats significantly increase as well as its Attack. Mold Breaker, its new ability, allows Mega Gyarados to punish Pokemon that rely on Levitate to dodge Earthquake, and Storm Drain to block its monstrous STAB Waterfall, and. It also ignores Unaware, so that giving Clefable has a difficult time stopping it. Though Mega Gyarados obtains many notable weaknesses such as Mach Punch and U-turn, Mega Gyarados it also loses its nasty quadruple weakness to Electric-type attacks. Gyarados is a very flexible Pokemon both offensively and defensively and Mega Gyarados its Mega Evolution simply adds to the flexibility that Gyarados can provide to its team.

Moves
========

This set's goal is to set up Dragon Dance in order to let Gyarados sweep opposing teams. Thanks to Mega Gyarados having access to Mold Breaker, Earthquake can target hit multiple Levitate users super effectively such as Rotom-W and Gengar (I'm assuming you meant to emphasize that many Levitate Pokemon are hit for double with their ability gone). Bite hits the majority of Gyarados's checks in counters - in particular Jellicent, Celebi, Trevenant, Gourgeist, and Slowbro as a few examples. Stone Edge is great for opposing Gyarados, Kyurem-B, Zapdos, and Dragonite. Substitute may seem like an odd option on a set that doesn't utilize Leftovers as an item; however, Substitute is great for helping Gyarados set up on targets such as Scizor and Gastrodon while making Gyarados difficult to becoming prone to being to be revenge killed by Scarf Genesect and Deoxys-S. Substitute can prevent also prevents Intimidate from lowering Gyarados's Attack as well as preventing blocking moves such as Will-O-Wisp and Leech Seed from crippling Gyarados.

After Stealth Rock damage, +1 Bounce is capable of OHKOing Mega Venusaur 50% of the time and will also OHKO Bold Celebi.

Set Details
========

224 Spe Speed EVs allow Gyarados to outspeed Timid Noivern while placing the remaining EVs into HP for a little extra bulk. Moxie, though not necessarily the best ability, is great for punishing opponents that use sacs (not sure on this one but I feel it should explicitly say "sacrifice a Pokemon" for clarity's sake) to safely switch into in their Gyarados check. Since Gyarados doesn't immediately become Mega Gyarados By choosing not to immediately Mega Evolve, Moxie can be utilized to give Mega Gyarados extra power while limiting the number of Dragon Dances necessary to set up sweep.

Usage Tips
========

Gyarados is a very flexible Mega Evolution case. Staying as regular Gyarados to utilize Intimidate and Flying-type's great resistances and immunity to Earthquake can help benefit setting up Mega Gyarados. Since Mega Gyarados will usually draw in attacks such as Keldeo's Secret Sword and Genesect's U-turn, Gyarados can stall out its Mega Evolution to set up on Pokemon that might be targetting (nitpick, would say "trying" instead) to take out Mega Gyarados but not normal Gyarados. Even so, Gyarados can also use its Flying-type to bait for an attack and get a free Dragon Dance as Mega Gyarados. For example, Gyarados can switch into Landorus-T and Mega Evolve to take laughable damage from Stone Edge. Another great example is stalling out Gyarados's Mega Evolution to bait Rotom-W in, then immediately Mega Evolving and shutting it down with Mold Breaker Earthquake. Mega Gyarados has awesome bulk and can take emergency attacks at full health. Gyarados can fool Scarf Genesect into using Thunderbolt as, when Gyarados Mega Evolves, proceeds to take 53% damage tops from Thunderbolt and OHKO Genesect back with +1 Waterfall (Gene is gone so iono, maybe Chomp/Terrakion Stone Edge or D-S Thunderbolt). When utilizing Moxie, Gyarados should be held back and used later in the game or when the opponent has a potentially significant amount of Pokemon to sac (see "clarity's sake" above). Unless Gyarados is utilizing Bounce, Mega Ferrothorn either being either weakened or cleared out is an absolute must before Gyarados can attempt to sweep.

Team Options
========

Mega Gyarados is a Pokemon that has a very strong presence but, as always many others (I'm assuming this is what you meant), appreciates back-up from other Pokemon its teammates. Mega Gyarados is an excellent late game cleaner so packing heavy offenses from Pokemon such as Kyurem-B is recommended. Kyurem-B can plow through many of Gyarados's checks and counters easily with Fusion Bolt and STAB Ice Beam. Latios also can puncture problematic Water-types, and does well against Mega Venusaur thanks to STAB Psyshock, and can utilize Defog offensively. With Hidden Power Fire, Skarmory and Ferrothorn become less of an issue. Talonflame is an excellent offensive teammate with access to Gale Wings Brave Bird taking to take out Conkeldurr and Breloom while using STAB Flare Blitz to roast Ferrothorn and Skarmory. Ferrothorn has multiple methods of supporting Gyarados through entry hazards, paralysis, and Leech Seed to help Gyarados recover health while setting up Dragon Dance. For removing entry hazards, consider Starmie for Rapid Spin and ways of tackling bulky Water-types and Mega Venusaur. For Defog users, Latias, Scizor, and Zapdos all work well. Latias and Zapdos do well at tackling bulky Water-types. Latias can handle Mega Venusaur while Scizor can utilize STAB U-turn to help Gyarados switch-in switch in.

Bulky Dragon Dance

move 2: Dragon Dance
move 3: Waterfall
move 4: Bounce / Earthquake
ability: Intimidate
item: Leftovers
evs: 120 HP / 64 Atk / 100 Def / 224 Spe
nature: Adamant

Moves
========

This set takes a different approach from Gyarados's full offensive sets. Gyarados utilizes its great typing, natural bulk, and Intimidate to set up multiple Dragon Dances and then attempt to sweep. Taunt and Substitute are the two moves of choice to help Gyarados set up Dragon Dances or sweep easier. Substitute further functions by preventing status from hampering Gyarados, (redundant with the above sentence) blocking weak attacks to ease setting up Dragon Dance and obtain extra recovery from Leftovers, and prevent Gyarados from being easy to revenge kill. Bounce is Gyarados's best option for as its attack. Bounce allows Gyarados to bypass its biggest counters - Mega Venusaur and Celebi - while using Bounce to obtain the turn in mid-air gives extra health from Leftovers and protect protects Gyarados's Substitute. Taunt and Bounce are great together because Taunt completely shuts down the option of blocking Bounce through Substitute or Protect. Though Bounce is superior in most scenarios on this set, Earthquake can be used to guarantee OHKOing -1 Mega Lucario while bypassing any King's Shield mind game from Aegislash. Stone Edge is an option to beat opposing Gyarados, Kyurem-B, and Rotom-W easier.

Set Details
========

The given EVs allow +1 Gyarados to outspeed Timid Noivern. Furthermore, the HP and Def Defense EVs allow Gyarados to withstand a U-turn from Choice Scarf Genesect and (Mega Scizor?) burned Ferrothorn's Power Whip while behind a Substitute. It also prevents many Water-types such as Scarf Keldeo locked onto Surf, Gastrodon, and Slowbro missing Psyshock from breaking through Gyarados's Substitute. Best of all, Gyarados is guaranteed to take +1 Close Combat from Jolly Mega Lucario and heavily dent it with STAB Waterfall or OHKO it with Earthquake (pretty sure the same holds true for regular Lucario!). The remaining EVs are placed into Attack to help Gyarados's attack still hit reasonably hard after a single Dragon Dance. With Stealth Rock factored in, a +1 Bounce can OHKO Calm Mega Venusaur, offensive Celebi, and max HP Conkeldurr. Gyarados can opt to go slower in exchange for extra power. After a Dragon Dance, 176 Speed EVs guarantees outspeeding positive Speed natured Starmie.

Usage Tips
========

Bulky Dragon Dance Gyarados is a very flexible Pokemon due to its offensive and defensive prowess. The choice of between Substitute and Taunt is very crucial to knowing how to succeed with Gyarados setting up Dragon Dance. With Taunt, Gyarados can switch into opposing Skarmory and Taunt to prevent Skarmory from using Whirlwind and Roost. Thanks to Intimidate and Gyarados's defensive EV spread, Brave Bird is a possible at best a 5HKO while Skarmory will continue to take recoil and make a 2HKO from boosted Waterfall easier. Substitute is great against Pokemon such as Gastrodon, which relies on status to cripple its opponents, and to continuously set up Dragon Dance. Best of all, Substitute can make it difficult to revenge kill Gyarados. If you desperately need this Gyarados to check Mega Lucario and Dragon Dance Mega Charizard X while doing maximum damage to them it, opt for Earthquake over Bounce and seek out Pokemon that can take out Mega Venusaur and Celebi.

Team Options
========

Hidden Power Fire helps ease the the burden on Gyarados bypassing can be used to bypass Ferrothorn and ease the burden on Gyarados as well as being used as an emergency check to Swords Dance Mega Lucario. Scald also can also be used on Starmie to be used as a lure to as it lures Ferrothorn.

Moves
========

With Life Orb and Stealth Rock damage, +1 Aqua Tail can OHKO Mega Mawile, max HP Scizor, and Mega Charizard X.

Set Details
========

The ability choice is tricky because they both are very good for this set. Intimidate is a viable ability to help Gyarados set up Dragon Dance; however, Moxie is very good with this set as Gyarados wants to set up as minimal amount of Dragon Dances as possible.

Usage Tips
========

When using this set it is best to use this Gyarados as either a late game sweeper or a Pokemon that can create dents in the opponent's team mid game. When using Moxie, Thus you want your opponent to save Pokemon as potential sacs (see above) for Gyarados to give Gyarados with Moxie it extra boosts in Attack. If you are utilizing Lum Berry or Wacan Berry, as alternative items these items they can be used to help Gyarados obtain a second Dragon Dance or to safely 2HKO potential threats that rely on status or Electric-type attacks to stop Gyarados.

Team Options
========

Since this Gyarados doesn't use Gyaradosite, other Mega Evolutions can help with beating holes through the opponents team. Nasty Plot Mega Lucario can place major press onto Skarmory and Ferrothorn with STAB Aura Sphere. For example, Mega Charizard X can utilize its STAB Flare Blitz to burst through Skarmory and Ferrothorn while heavily damaging bulky Water-types such as Rotom-W with STAB Dragon Claw.

Moves
========

Roar will bypass Substitute and Fairy-types., Dragon Tail will bypass Taunt as well as being Gyarados's best attack against Mega Charizard X. Earthquake is a viable alternative if you feel Gyarados needs to eliminate Mega Lucario immediately while 2HKOing max HP Mega Mawile after Stealth Rock.

Set Details
========

The given EVs and nature maximize Gyarados's bulk while using Intimidate to cripple physical threats such as Mega Lucario, Mega Charizard X, and Talonflame. Leftovers is necessary on this set to keep Gyarados healthy.

Usage Tips
========

========

Stealth Rock is a great way of punishing Pokemon while shuffling with Roar or Dragon Tail. Ferrothorn is a cool good teammate because it can lay Stealth Rock to help Gyarados when using Roar or Dragon Tail, paralysis use Thunder Wave to completely cripple offensive threats, and Leech Seed to help Gyarados passively recover on some targets. Rapid Spin from Starmie works well by eliminating potential offensive threats and some defensive targets. Since Dragon Tail can be a liability against Fairy-types, Excadrill can be used to execute them with STAB Iron Head while spinning away entry hazards. Mega Venusaur is also a great teammate because it can rely on Gyarados's Intimidate to help tank otherwise dangerous threats such as other Gyarados, Rotom-W, and Azumarill.

Though it requires a Lonely or Naughty nature, Fire Blast is Gyarados's fastest way of eliminating Ferrothorn and 2HKOing Skarmory.

Checks & Counters
########

**Bulky Grass-types**: Without Bounce and Ice Fang, Gyarados is prone to Grass-types hampering its sweep. Ferrothorn's ability also is a major thorn (heh) to Gyarados since STAB Waterfall, STAB Bounce, STAB Bite, and Ice Fang are contact moves.

While Taunt sets can screw up Skarmory as well; however, lacking the move means Skarmory is capable of setting up Stealth Rock to limit Gyarados's opportunities to switch-in, Spikes to hamper Mega Gyarados, Roost off damage taken, phase out with Whirlwind, or just attack Gyarados with STAB Brave Bird. Mega Aggron can shrug off boosted Earthquake from regular Gyarados thanks to Filter and set up Curse in front of Gyarados. Be wary of Mold Breaker Earthquake from Mega Gyarados though: - +1 Earthquake 2HKOes Mega Aggron. Clefable can also Encore Gyarados while it uses Dragon Dance or Substitute and cripple with status.

**Scarf-users**: Scarf Pokemon - Genesect in particular - (Deoxys-S?) can hamper Gyarados's sweep.
