[OVERVIEW]

Mega Gyarados has carved a niche for itself in this metagame thanks to Mold Breaker, which is excellent against users of Multiscale, Sturdy, and Magic Bounce and thus makes it an answer to defensive teams. It's also decent versus hyper offensive teams because it works as a secondary check to Primal Groudon and Ghost Arceus, having access to Intimidate and a Ground immunity before Mega Evolving. Finally, its decent 95 / 109 / 130 bulk and sheer physical power given by a base 155 Attack stat greatly help it fulfill its duties. However, Mega Gyarados is vulnerable to Xerneas and Mega Salamence, both very popular Pokemon. It also removes the possibility of running Mega Salamence, which is much better against hyper and bulky offensive teams. Lastly, it does not contribute to the defensive synergy of the team outside of checking offensive Ghost Arceus and some variants of Primal Groudon; it even has to be cautious of the latter's Lava Plume.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Crunch is used as Mega Gyarados's main STAB move because it hits a lot of Pokemon for neutral or super effective damage. Earthquake is mainly used to hit Primal Groudon and Klefki hard as well as anything that resists Crunch. Taunt is useful to avoid status moves and phazing and to stop Xerneas from setting up. Lastly, Dragon Dance boosts Mega Gyarados's Attack and Speed, making it an even more threatening Pokemon.

Set Details
========

Maximum Attack EVs are used to deal maximum damage even without a boost. An Adamant nature is needed to OHKO Lugia and 2HKO defensive Arceus formes at +2 with Crunch. Maximum EVs in Speed allow Mega Gyarados to outspeed Darkrai and Shaymin at +1. Running a Jolly nature is an option to outspeed Mega Gengar and Mewtwo at +1. Intimidate should be used as the initial ability because it provides utility versus hyper offense. Lastly, Mold Breaker as a post-Mega Evolution ability helps Mega Gyarados break through common abilities such as Magic Bounce, Multiscale, and Sturdy.

Usage Tips
========

When playing against a stall team, make sure to bring Gyarados in safely without letting it get hit by a status move. Furthermore, never use Dragon Dance until an opposing Sableye has Mega Evolved because its base forme has Prankster and Will-O-Wisp. When playing against a hyper offensive team, it's not easy to sweep with Mega Gyarados because of how common Xerneas and Mega Salamence are on these teams, so just save it to check Primal Groudon and offensive Ghost Arceus. Against Primal Groudon, try playing around Lava Plume and Thunder Wave instead of directly switching Mega Gyarados into it.
(space)

Team Options
========

Mega Gyarados shines on balanced and bulky offensive teams. It should be paired with solid Xerneas checks such as Primal Groudon, Ho-Oh, and Klefki, as well as solid Mega Salamence checks such as defensive Arceus formes. It's very important that other team members cover Mega Gyarados's weakness to hyper offensive and bulky offensive teams, as Mega Gyarados can only take care of stall and some balanced teams. Finally, Extreme Killer Arceus performs well versus offense and Mega Gyarados takes care of its checks, such as Giratina, Lugia, and Ghost Arceus.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=========

Using Ice Fang over Earthquake is a decent option to beat Mega Salamence, and Mega Gyarados will still be able to break stall teams with Taunt and Mold Breaker; however, this makes it weak to Klefki. Aqua Tail can be used to OHKO Ho-Oh and Mega Diancie without any boost as well as Ground Arceus at +1. However, do note that even with Mold Breaker, Aqua Tail doesn't bypass Desolate Land.

Checks and Counters
==============

**Xerneas**: Xerneas resists Crunch, while Earthquake is not powerful enough to defeat it. Xerneas will then proceed to KO Mega Gyarados with Moonblast.

**Mega Salamence**: Mega Salamence is bulky enough to take hits from Mega Gyarados, especially after cutting its Attack with Intimidate. It can then set up because it's faster than Mega Gyarados and proceed to hit it really hard.

**Grass Arceus and Fairy Arceus**: Both Grass Arceus and Fairy Arceus completely wall Mega Gyarados and 2HKO it with STAB Judgment.

**Klefki**: Klefki cripples Mega Gyarados with priority Thunder Wave and thus stops its sweep. Mega Gyarados can KO it with Earthquake, though.

**Offensive Teams**: While Gyarados is a secondary Primal Groudon check, it can't really switch into anything else.

Nah it's fine man, was only messing haha saves me a job tonight, no point us both writing similar stuff about a mon that doesn't have much to write home about anyway! For what it's worth this looks p cool, I'd mention ekiller is an awesome teammate in particular seeing as Gyara manhandles common ekiller checks(some fat arcs, gira, Lugia etc.) while ekiller improves matchup vs offense and can use the holes Gyara creates to its advantage(weakening Xern forced to take EQ's etc.)

ferro is no counter in my opinion. definitely doesnt wall and rape Big gyara hehe. they dont have Defense investment in uber and crunch does good damage. you can force 50 / 50 if you are +1 with taunt and crunch vs their leech / whip. i dont think whip does more than 70, some dont even carry it. should be adamant too, i dont think you outspeed anything except maybe mewtwos? idk. also mention ice arceus as a good Partner !

**Ferrothorn**: walls it, and totally rape it if it has power whip.
cmon. i edited that out but if shit like that makes it into the writeup i will not be as forgiving.

i assume the majority of this will be expanded on writeup? lots of important info missing (what mold breaker does for its effectiveness - passes bounce, sturdy and multiscale) and that sorta thing. i'll look over it again once its written to check up on this. just remember that the reader may not be as experienced as you or qc members so explanation is always warranted - just dont overdo it and make it patronizing.

adamant deserves at least a slash if not first slash. ohkoing lugia and 2HKOing supportceus at +2 is too hard to pass up - gyarados's offensive matchup isnt exactly amazing so making it better at its intended role is a valuable trade. ferrothorn isnt as big of a check as you expect, +1 crunch 2hkos it while power whip does 81% max if its even running it. if it gets intimidated by regular gyarados beforehand then its an easy win.

Don't even mention waterfall in other options, it's absolute trash and should never ever be used. If I need to explain then consider: you're always using Taunt and DD because that is the niche here, Waterfall with any other move provides pretty disgusting coverage. Fall+EQ leaves you walled by Mence, Gira-O, Lati now takes a hit from you etc. Fall+Crunch means you need loads of prior on Pdon and can't hit it at all in base forme when you wanna keep ground immunity and Intim for late game. EQ only has 20 less BP on neutral targets when STAB is considered so yeah... If you want an option to hit Xern and fill out OO then use Iron Head/Tail.

Adding on to Ada vs Jolly arguments, Jolly Max doesn't outspeed Ada Ray(287 vs 289) and therefore fails to beat any Arceus/Lugia that isn't a shit unEVed ladder variant meaning you can't Taunt them and therefore you can only really set up on Bliss/Sableye on classic stall without being crippled. It also means Jolly is only good for matchups vs Gengar, Mewtwo and rly fast 90s(neutral natured 90s need 184 Speed EVs to outspeed Max Ada Gyara) so I'd probs go Adamant with a mention of Jolly in details.

mention somewhere that mold breaker waterfall / aqua tail does not bypass primal weather

i agree with nayrz re: ferrothorn, it's so shaky that i wouldn't even mention it at all in the checks & counters section

Finally, people realized how stronk this Mega Fish can be. It can tank a +2 Sludge Bomb Darkrai, Dragon Dance on it and OHKO. Mence just dies !_! Aqua Tail also lets you OHKO Ground Arceus at +1.

I think you should mention Gyarados can check Ghost Arceus. +1 Crunch OHKOes.

+1 252 Atk Arceus-Ghost Brick Break vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Gyarados: 214-254 (64.6 - 76.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
