Welcome to Highest Stat Meta!
Highest Stat Meta is a particular metagame which tries to limit players team options in a fun way. Just like Monotype, it sets an additional rule to teambuilding: All Pokemon on a team must share the same highest stat. This means that Pokemon must have the same stat as their highest stat. For example all of Excadrill, Tyranitar and Garchomp have Attack as their highest stat, so they may be used together. Hopefully, this restriction allows for a creative metagame where teams can try to cover up their flaws, while using a limited pool of available Pokemon. Attack teams will generally have few Special Attackers, and vice verse. This way, all of the possible teams have pronounced pros and cons, while not being as extreme as Monotype, so it can be less matchup based.

The Rules
  • Standard (OU) Clauses.
  • All Pokemon on a team must have the same stat as their highest one.
    • Blissey may be used on HP, as its highest stat is its 255 HP.
    • Hippowdon may be used on Defense, as its highest stat is its 118 Defense.
    • Claydol may be used on Special Defense, as its highest stat is its 120 Special Defense.
  • In the case a Pokemon has multiple stats tied as its highest one, it may be used on all teams.
    • Tyranitar may only be used on Attack, as its Attack (134) is higher than all of its other stats.
    • Venusaur may be used on Special Attack and Special Defense, as its SpA and SpD tie for its highest stat.
    • Jirachi may be used on all teams, as all of its stats are equal.
  • Mega Evolutions are usable on the teams their base forms are usable on.
    • Mega Charizard Y is usable on Special Attack, as Charizard's Special Attack is its highest stat.
    • Mega Charizard X is only usable on Special Attack, even though it has equal Attack and Special Attack, because Charizard's Special Attack is its highest stat.
    • Mega Glalie is usable on all teams, even though its highest stats are Attack and Special Attack. This is because its base form has all equal stats.
    • Form changes work the same way.
Tips
In Highest Stat Meta its important to get a balanced team all around. This means that even though the best Pokemon available look good, they may not be the best possible option on a certain team. When you have six physical attackers, you won't be able to break through physically defensive Pokemon well. Similarly, Speed teams probably want some wallbreakers and defensive teams some offensive presence. The legendary pixies are very important for this, as together they can fulfill many roles on most teams.

MAMP!
I think Pokemon with abilities that raise their stats, like Huge Power and Speed Boost, will be very valuable in this meta, allowing you to have more team diversity.

Mega Charizard X and Keldeo will probably be staples on Sp. Attack teams to prevent special walls from walling the entire team.
I will probably have a lot of speed teams here since wherever I go Greninja follows, but I will probably have a lot Sp. Attack and HP teams that focus on offense and bulky offense. This will be a very interesting metagame.

I can see Landorus-I being used on every Attack team in order to deal with physical walls in general. Also Stall is going to be pretty hard to use, that being said, there are a lot of Pokemon with a ton of HP out there, so maybe it's possible.

Here is a list of things which can potentially use their lower attacking stat to decent effect on Attack and Special Attack teams.

- Absol

- Arcanine

Togekiss and Mew are the only good SpA hazard clearers. :( At least they can use Aura Sphere or Flamethrower/Fire blast to take on Bisharp (Mew has to watch for Sucker Punch and Knock Off if it doesn't have enough speed though). Keldeo definitely needs to be on every Sp. Atk team.

MAMP!
Pokemon like Chansey and Skarm will be very valuable, as they straight up curbstomp a lot of teams, SpA and Atk teams respectively will need a way around them. Keldeo seems good for SpA, but Taunt Gengar could work too.

DoW

formally Death on Wings
I can see Attack teams being a big threat. Staraptor/Mega Pinsir/Ttar/Excadrill maybe? Nidoking for a special attacker and Trevenant for a wall maybe? Dual Birds with plenty of support, could be interesting.

The best Pokemon I've used so far is Charizard-Mega-X on Special Attack teams.

Outside of being able to support a team of mostly special attackers, it can also sweep way more easily than in OU. (In which it's pretty easy to sweep already) This is because the counters and checks you can pick are extremely limited. Defense teams can handle most variants, but most other variants have to rely on a single Pokemon to check it, most of it easily worn down (Think: Heatran, Tyranitar). It outspeeds most things on Speed teams after a boost and can easily take a Brave Bird from Talonflame. Speed teams are usually quite frail so they need a scarfer or strong priority on their teams to beat it, or have enough offensive presence to make it unable to setup. This is usually not the case however as it is with the other teams, it's hard to make your entire team be able to handle it as you'll lack the ability to cover other threats.

canno

formerly The Reptile
Huge / Pure Power is interesting in this because it gives other stat classes mons that wouldn't usually fit in. For example, Azumarril can be used in HP, which gives HP a lot of fire power. Speed can use Medicham (Mega) as a wall-breaker, and Defense (and Attack, but not as neat) has access to Mega Mawile.

Likewise Fur Coat, as it gives frail Speed teams access to Furfrou. Or Speed Boosters - SpA gets Yanmega and Atk gets Sharpedo (other Speed Boosters already had Speed as their high stat).

this is hard
i want to make a speed team because of greninja, and whimsicott with furfrou as a wall of sorts
but i also want an hp team because stall and azumarill. oh and also maybe victini as an afterthought.
and attack teams get sharpedo for speed
and apparently sableye, because sableye is an offensive monster, defeating everything in it's path.

i want to make a speed team because of greninja, and whimsicott with furfrou as a wall of sorts
but i also want an hp team because stall and azumarill. oh and also maybe victini as an afterthought.
and attack teams get sharpedo for speed
and apparently sableye, because sableye is an offensive monster, defeating everything in it's path.
this is really hard
Why not make more than one team like me? :)

I will make it my life's work to construct a stall team in this metagame.

Chansey / Mandibuzz / Quagsire / Alomomola / Amoonguss / Mew using HP seems like a solid team right off the bat, featuring egg jesus, something for keldeo, a regen core, an unaware, two possible defoggers and extreme versatility in mew.

Defence and special defence teams seem incredibly difficult to pull off though because each of them have an almost unfixable weakness to mono special attack and mono attack respectively, and their highest stat make it difficult to go on the offensive against those teams as well. They only break even against their best match up, their respective offensive counterparts, and against anything else seem to be at an arguable disadvantage.

For anyone looking to play an ubers version of this... don't run Defense.

Hey look, Deoxys-N finally has a niche in being available to Speed teams!

well that's why every single one would run aegislash
.

Defense Teams and Special Defense teams seemingly are helpless against Special Attack and Attack respectively, but if you get create there are enough counters. For starters they share a lot of Pokemon with high defenses. These include but are not limited to: Registeel, Deoxys D, Carbink (Diancie), Aegislash and Celebi. While they aren't the first Pokemon you'd think of, they are still surprisingly viable with their high defenses and will most likely work well on a team which generally lacks that defense. Otherwise you can always run a lot of investment or Sand/Boosters. They're viable enough imo and stall should be able to be made, it's just all about being creative. (And yea sure, it might be a bit harder, but it's not impossible at all and Registeel works really well on SpDef :( )

Okay, sorry for a double post and bump, but I kinda want to revive this and have played a match with Mamp!

One thing that I've discovered that Stall teams are viable on a lot of types: HP, Special Attack and Defense. They can all run viable stall or semi-stall teams as they all get enough good users. They still got flaws. Defense lacks in clerics, as Pokemon with Heal Bell or Wish are rare for them, so it's hard to support diamonds in the rough like Ferrothorn and Rotom H. Otherwise it has fairly good Pokemon for stall, as Suicune, the Rotom, Ferrothorn, Mew, Gliscor, Sableye Mega, Skarmory, Slowbro and Celebi are all really good defensive Pokemon. HP has a cookie-cutter stall team that Kl4ng posted, even if it does have problems with some wallbreakers. Another problem it has is being really passive, but that isn't too bad for Stall. Special Attack gets a lot of stall Pokemon in general, like Clefable, Heatran and the pixies, which can be hard to break. Special Attack might like semistall better though due to the many offensive forces available. Special Defense can run a team similar to Defense, but it loses some important things and only gain Altaria Mega.

Suicune seems really good as a wincondition, it's hard to prevent especially on Special attack teams as it can soon be hardly damaged by Special attacks while threatening your Pokemon. It can also set up on a lot of Pokemon and even checks Charizard Mega X! I ran a Rocky Helmet to punish physical Pokemon too, but you can run Leftovers as well. It seems like one of the best winconditions.

today i played my first games in this meta, and i really like it. it's complex with teambuilding but such things i love :)
i made only a speed team so far, where there is a lack of tanks and an overflow of birds.
i will hang onto it and try some more things.

I've been playing around with a SpA team a little, from what I can see it seems to be one of the stronger stats and capable of running both offense and stall, and with both physical and special walls and sweepers. I threw together a team of Zard X / Keldeo / Clefable / Mew / Gengar / Heatran in a few minutes, and while it's far from being the perfect team it felt far more like an OU team than an OM team.

I think Speed teams might be one of the toughest to build for, as many of the pokemon there have high speed as their niche, and both good offensive and defensive mons generally like higher offensive or defensive stats to their speed. Pokemon like Medicham will help, but I think it may be tough to do well with them.
I think Mew, Victini, Jirachi, and to some extent perhaps Shaymin and maybe Kingdra and Ditto may see a rise in usage, as they can just be thrown on to any team to serve an important role or act as the glue holding the team together. At the same time I think pokemon like Thundurus and Pinsir may go down in usage due to their main roles being exactly the same as most things on that team.

Also, can we have an update on the banlist please? There's mentions of things like Aegislash and Greninja, and quite a few of them I think would be unlikely to hurt the metagame as much as they did in OU: For example, I doubt deoxys-s would be particularly overpowering given it can only be used on speed teams.

I think the most successful Speed teams will probably use Mega Lopunny, as I feel like it is the best mega speed has to offer (Mega Scept is decent too, and Mega Pidgeot is ok). Also SpDef and Def have access to the powerful Mega Diancie while SpDef has access to M-Altaria, which might be a good mon for that team as it deals with the common KelZard-X combo very well.
