Homestuck is a webcomic on the site MSPaintAdventures. I personally follow it for the characters, they are just so off the wall sometimes.

reasons to read homestuck

Here we can talk about the latest updates and what not. It updates really fast sometimes and if we don't get an update in a long time, expect the next one to have some crazy awesome scenes. It starts off slow, but it does get better by Act 5 for most.

The comic, however, has just rolled into a giant Kamatari ball of ideas and characters that has gotten out of control.

The funny thing I had no intention of EVER reading Homestuck. A close friend of mine (SevenDeadlySins) suggested I read over 2 years ago(?), with the intent of getting me hooked. If you've heard of Homestuck, you've probably thought of reading at least one page. You've seen that one page, that shit is boring and dumb looking... right? Well, i mean yeah. To be honest, the early parts of Homestuck are nothing special (though if you re-read it after catching up like I did, you'll come to appreciate a bunch of little things). Homestuck slowly builds from being an ok story and turns into a phenomenal story. Act 5 (there are 6 acts total) is arguably one of the best things i've ever read. Like... I think my life marginally got better after reading that act... isn't that insane? Damn right it is, but I don't care that's just how Homestuck rolls. It's hard to describe what makes Homestuck good, but if you're fan of "great" (yeah GREAT) pop culture jokes, compelling & awesome characters and interesting plot points (closest approximation would be sci-fi) then i'd give it a go. And at its core, its just really fucking funny.

It's a massive commitment though. There are like 6000+ panels and 100 000 of thousands of words you need to read...

Fun facts:
Our fanbase is rabid. Seriously, lots of cosplayers and people who use Homestuck avatars... you've probably exposed to but I can't think of anyone atm...?
The Homestuck Kickstarter game managed to raise 2.4 million dollars (one of the top 10 kickstarters of all time~money wise). That's some serious BANK.

I read homestuck for about 2-3 hours once and yet I don't recognize any of the fucking things that I see in people's avatars or cosplays.

I guess I can't pass judgement or anything, but when I see homestuck cosplayers I can't help but think they are the same people who wore those awful Kingdom Hearts 2 black cloak society getups. Are homestucks characters designed ironically (I remember characters having no arms as joke at one point) or do you actually like these things?

Believe it or not, I'm actually "from" MSPA forums; I visited there for years before I joined Smogon. I'll always stand by Problem Sleuth as being an incredible story that is a blast to read. If you don't have the time to commit to Homestuck, definitely read through Problem Sleuth. It's hilarious, it's intriguing, and it's such a cool story. I remember going as a forum member and being able to actually choose our own adventure with forum comments that actually showed up in the story. Those were the times~

The archive can look pretty intimidating, but you don't have to read it all at once.

Yeah generally what you'll see regarding stuff like that is is the trolls, which don't really get much of a show until Act 5...

I never really found it hard to get through the early acts though. It gets pretty funny pretty quickly, although it does take a while to get where its going plot-wise.

Yeah, 2-3 hours is only the tip of the iceberg. In the holidays, I had infinite time on my hands so I spent an entire week reading Homestuck, non-stop. I only read through it once, read about 8 hours a day. It is a huge comic.

And yes, we do genuinely enjoy it, not just ironically (except maybe Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff). The no arms thing is just one of the many running gags.

Also, I'm extremely excited for A6A4. Looking forward to seeing the new planets.

i don't really care about the comic per se but i really hate the culture of author worship relating to the creator andrew hussie. i'm not going to accept someone's authority right away, i'd like to be persuaded by the art, writing, emotional impact, ability to affect me -- it seems annoying to me to constantly be barraged by little reminders that HEY im the author and this is a funny webcomic ok thanks go back to laughing at the jokes

yeah, the fanbase is also a mess. there is an insane amount of overly-obsessive people who force you to get into it and try to make the whole thing funny when it really isn't. and the cosplayers are the same who dress up as KH characters. weaboos, without the japanese (i don't know if homestuck has japanese crap in it).

i tried to get into it, i honestly did try to read it with high expectations, but it didn't cut out for me. maybe i'm just not into that humor.

pretty sure that march eridan originates from a piece of art that was done as part of a set of 12 for a calendar. the art was for the month of march, and featured eridan in the kilt and tight shirt. so sexi.

Nahh. As others have said in this thread, the fanbase is pretty messed up. I went back when he'd take actual action commands from the community on the forums and incorporate them into the story; it was a literal CYOA. Hussie sold out on that premise for Homestuck so the story could have more fluidity and less randomness. While it was a smart move that went on to make his work incredibly popular, I just can't help but miss Problem Sleuth and its mechanics. Homestuck just feels like a big sell-out from my side of things, which is why I guess I quit reading it after the troll act.

Well, I guess I am still around, but I am more of a veteran who lurks and maybe makes a post once a year or something, haha.
