General Introduce yourself!

Hi all, looks like I've been playing Pokemon since the original Red/Blue games, but never really played or looked into playing competitively. I'm interested in giving it a try, but have no idea where I should start! I see a lot of information about the different tiers as well as recommended movesets for different pokemon and how to use them. But what's the best way to go about learning how to build your own teams and strategies? Is it typically better to follow some recommended builds first or just learn through trial an error?

I'm looking forward to learning a lot, and I know I still have a ways to go. I haven't finished X yet (not planning on buying OR/AS until I finish), and actually haven't finished a Pokemon game since the original G/S. ^^;

Hi kernikal! You can find several sample teams in the threads for individual tiers in the Competitive Discussion forum, as well as sign up to be tutored by experienced battlers in the Battling 101 forum. I myself started back on the Original Generation 1 games and only started playing competitively this generation with X/Y. It's a lot to take in at first but it's pretty fun ad I'm sure you'll enjoy yourself and make friends.

Welcome to the site, even if it's a bit late! :) I played every generation but the first two, starting with Emerald. I found Smogon through Showdown, and my favorite tiers are OU, BH, and Random battles to name a couple. I hang around the OM room, but only watch some of the discussions. Hello, hello! I have a lot of experience with competitive battles, but all the hackers on the PSS drove me to start battling on Showdown.

I've been playing Pokemon since I was just a child. My first game ever was Pokemon Yellow Version, which resulted in a lifelong addiction.

My favorite Pokemon is Nidoking. Always has been, always will be. I've owned one of the Nidokings currently residing in my OmegaRuby version for 11 years now.

Emerald was great. It was my first experience with Hoenn, and to this day, I still think Ruby and Sapphire were meh compared to Emerald. FireRed happens to be my favorite, with Silver at a close second.

I can be found on the OU, UU, and RU ladders on weekends outside of my chaotic life and will seldom play in Other Metagames. I aspire to become a better competitive battler here by learning to further understand EV spreads, become a better team-builder, and meet all the great and amazing people here on Smogon. The community here is really cool, hope you feel welcome here. I also really like Staraptor, it's just so badass. Being an admin on Indigo Plateau, I would guess you are quite familiar with the competitive scene, so what is your favorite tier? Always nice to see new people discover the amazing aspects of compeititive pokemon. Awesome that you like PU, I think it's an awesome tier. Also, if you feel brave, you could try bringing some of your favorite PU pokemon to battles in higher tiers^^.
