Iron Chef Journal #8.3 -- #notetoself: do not start battling if you're mentally tired after driving.

Chef newfren stepped up to challenge me. As I assumed his Dragalge's Focus Blast hitting on Empoleon on the switch, I risked Gligar to take the hit, when it happened to be using Draco Meteor (and I'm very unsure if Dragalge was Specs-boosted at that time--too lazy to calc because I'm guessing it's not even enough to KO Physically Defensive Gligar with Draco Plate; if that was really Specs-boosted, then I'm going to hugely dent his team with Slurpuff), and things went downhill from there. GG, though!

Chef BrandonBeast was the next to step up and face me. He actually did forfeit when he still has a chance of clawing through my team. GG, though. You actually fought valiantly. Never be discouraged!

My dragalge was draco plate and killing defensive gligar from there was a roll. Also I figured that between chandelure and crobat I would have been fine against slurpuff, whereas denting the shit out of gligar and then possibly getting tspikes up woulda been more useful.

Didn't actually have focus blast!

Suprise! I lost again, against Euphonos! It was a cool battle, and all I have to say from it is "Please, BAN MEGA BEEDRILL!"
EDIT: ANOTHER SURPRISE! I lost, against LilOU. I'm actually shit.

srated to build around physical pz because it has doubledge plus adaptability which is insane. Physdef mandi was added just for some bulk and a switch into krook, then i tacked on special shark because it deserves some more love tbh. i was really weak to fighting types and fire types and i felt like nuking shit so yay dragalge i guess. A win con and entei counter in slowking really helped the team as well as a spdef forretress to switch into dracos

Jolly Nature

- Brave Bird
- Quick Attack
- U-turn

So I will make this short on why each mon is here. Swellow is a nuke that fits the requirements and has a guts boost which helps its low attack stat giving it the potential to break walls, while also having an amazing speed tier. Forre is there because I figured hazard stack would maximize swellows wall breaking potential which is also the reason I added dragalge for tspikes and another mon that fits the category. Rotom-c is a water check that when paired with mega bee creates a solid volt turn core so that I can keep pressure on my opponent and give swellow the maximum amount of switch ins. If u need more explanation I have a PB&J sandwich that u may also have.

So basically I thought of many things I wanted to try and do this tournament. I could've had Focus Blast Nidoqueen, CritDra, Slurpuff, etc. In the end though I decided I wanted to build around Forretress + Cobalion. They fit the criteria and also help each other out immensely. I wanted to go for a hyper offensive team considering it's my favorite playstyle and since Forretress was chosen for one of my Underdogs, I made it a Custap Berry variant. I've used Earthquake Custap lead for a while now, as it consistently did well against the likes of Empoleon, Chandelure, Nidoqueen, that used to be a pain in the ass. Especially Chandelure, which always thinks it's a free switch into Lead Forretress. As shown in the replay against Iron Chef Euphonos EQ Forretress helped out immensely, taking out Chandelure early on so Cobalion could sweep with ease. I added in Cobalion after Forretress, I knew I'd be using a Swords Dance set that didn't need to use Stone Edge as I had already ensured I had a good Chandelure lure. I left the last slot empty waiting to see how my team turned out. Heliolisk was added in to ensure I had a good check for Suicune, and a good Scald switch-in. I have Toxic for mainly Cresselia, but it also puts a timer on Porygon2. I didn't use it against Euphonos, as I thought just damaging it would be more beneficial. Next up I added Crobat, which gave me a switch-in for Fighting-types, as well as a Taunt user to prevent Defog and other setup, not to mention it is a good VoltTurn partner for Heliolisk. Afterwards, I added Mamoswine so I'd have a good check for Salamence, Aerodactyl, among others as well as a powerful wallbreaker. I had Adamant to ensure I could smack Cresselia and Porygon2 among others harder. Lastly, I have four attacks Blastoise as a good Fire switch in and a special wallbreaker. The Speed EVs allow me to creep 4 Speed Suicune, as well as other Blastoise creeping Suicune. Noticing I didn't have much for opposing Mamoswine and most Ground-types in general. I added Magnet Rise on Cobalion so it could use them as setup fodder. The team has a weakness to shit like Slurpuff but that doesn't get any setup opportunities so it should be fine.

This is my team for the UnderDog round.

The 2 Underdogs are clearly Raichu and Swoobat, which I chose 'cause of the amazing speed tier (110 for Raichu and 114 for Bat, which is kinda impressing) and the relatively fast way to setup they both possess: pretty standard set for the Bat, altho I'm still debating if I should go for Air Slash over Heat Wave - with Heat Wave, I can hit steel types, but Hydra and Pedo to an extent kinda walls the set.

Raichu runs a set I tried like 2 months ago and it was pretty fun to use (altho it didn't work out everytime), which focuses on absorb electric moves/enter on a wall while he is using a healing or utility move, to then encore and gets more boosts from LightingRod/forces a switch and proceed to NP up. Basically, Raichu should be my main stallbreaker, which is kinda LOL to say I admit.

The rest of the team is meant to help the 2 out, mainly Swoobat: Gligar and Empoleon are just a very good core, as we all known - Empoleon runs Shucka + GK specifically to lure Mega Pert (and I hate lures! Iron Chef destroys my nature...). Drill and Shao made up for a good TurnCore, altho they're kinda shut down by Crobat (but I guess SE on Shao/Raichu should take care of Bat... right? ^^')

This is for the underdog theme

So I decided to go with close combat cobalion and explosion forrey as my theme ingredients, then went about building an ho team around them. I wanted a ghost to block spins so I want with chandy - this leaves me weak to aero so I went with pert. Add on a dragalge for bonus adhering to the theme as well as another fighting resist, a bit of a defensive backbone, and tspikes and high powered attacks for helping with more defensive squads. I'm hilariously EQ weak at this point, so I throw a crobat on. It's sky plate so it can have a bit of recovery over CB which is what it was initially. Taunt as a fourth move because I don't rate cross poison at all and there's nothing else I'd really want there. It helps stop defogs as well which is fun.

After looking at this I still felt very EQ weak, so I went with a magnet rise SD coba over the more traditional sub sd. Chandy I made scarf for revenge killing purposes and as an additional way to fuck over balanced builds with trick - I was pretty confident in my matchup against opposing HO with rain dance pert and sky plate bat.

time to lose to some iron chefs I guess!

Iron Chef Replays

Go forth and judge! Some delicious dishes this round. Judging is open until next Saturday.

Ok so lets get this show on the road, I'll be updating this post throughout the week

Judging
Originality
=3/5
So I found this team fairly standard in nature although physical Porygon-Z was a nice touch if not cliche. Special Sharpedo was also a cool and undderated addition and Uturn was a nice pivot on Mandibuzz which you used well. Unfortunately, there was nothing really groundbreakingly original and most of your mons are just standard UU fare.

Use of Theme= 3.5/5
The underdogs by definition definitely played a huge part in your team as they served as your main wallbreakers and sweepers. However, all of your underdogs are well known and aren't really "underdogs" in the tier. For example, a pokemon like Dragalge with 97 spA is effectively a loophole to the underdog. Ultimately, the underdogs were used well although none really had the heart of the underdog.

Effectiveness=8/10
No doubt a solid team, with offensive and defensive utility and some relative suprise factor to keep the opponents on their toes. You are slightly weak to roarcune, but as shown in the replay you are able to deal with that well enough

TOTAL: 14.5/20

Originiality: 2.5/5
Swellow is a really cool mon and definitiletly an orginal mon. Hydro Pump on salamence is cute. However, I didn't feel this team was all that innovative or new.

Use of Theme: 2.5/5
Again, Swellow is very cool and I feel it is the definition of the underdog. It also appears to be intergral to your team. However, dragalge, although a technical underdog, was pretty much a freebie for the requirement. As a result, It feels like this team wasn't really about the underdogs but was rather forced in just to meet the reqs. Props for Swellow doe.

Effectiveness: 6.5/10 Looks decent overall, although Maero+Fire spam causes trouble.

Total: 11.5/20

CREATIVITY: 5 / 5
Holy innovation there was everything from major innovation in the Honchkrow and Feraligtr sets and also a lot of cool tweaks like Magnet Rise Coba
USE OF THEME: 4 / 5Definitely used the theme as they formed a huge part of the team

EFFECTIVENESS: 6 / 10
Unfortunately, this team didn't win and as cool as these sets look I think the stuff like special Honckrow are only good for suprise kills.

TOTAL:15/20

Originality: 3/5
I really loved the idea of eq lure forretress. Toxic is also a nice touch on heliolisk and magnet rise on Coballion is OG af. Nothing really too new but at the same time there was some innovation and originality.

Use of theme: 4/5 All your underdogs played a vital role in your team structure and were definitely important for the team. I also really really really love the use of custap EQ forry. That forry set is a good example of a real underdog, it takes a normally defensive pokemon and lets it shine in an effective lure role. I really want to give the full 5 but there was no real groundbreaking underdog taken from the depths of irrelevance

Effectivness: 8/10 Overall a very solid team, but this team feels like it could struggle versus stall and bulky playstyles if they can find a way to remove the hazards

Total : 15/20

Originiality= 3.5/5
Dual scarfers of slow mons :OOO Not sure if it would be very effective but it is definitely extremelt innovative and original. Fell stinger on Beedril is also extremely situational but creative as well. Some standard stuff rounds out the squad but definitely some innovation thinking.

Use of Theme: 3/5
Your underdogs, Blastoise and Exploud are fitting of the underdog title and appear to be at least somewhat useful on your team. Could've done more to take advantage of the underdog spirit for this round, but these two carry some weight.

Effectiveness: 4/10
Tbh the team seems eclectic with no real focus (not having a description is also kinda hard to figure out what is going on). This is further compounded by the fact that you couldn't pull out a win in 3 tries. I'm not sure I can call this an effective team :S

total: 10.5/20

Originiality: 4/5
Nasty plot Raichu and Geomancy Swoobat is the most original thing I've seen this round. That funky almost offensive empoleon set is a good lure for the sweepers and the relatively low quantity of innovation is made up for by the quality of the originality

Use of Theme 4/5
Raichu and Swoobat. Enough said. The team was not only built around the two underdogs, but are very effective in their own right. This really epitomizes the underdog spirit as two PU mons are turned into the focal points of the offensive onslaught.

Effectiveness: 8/10 On Paper I was a little sceptical of seeing "garbage" mons on a team, but you have used them well and the win validates that this is a solid team. There is also a strong turn core which is dangerous enough even if the underdogs are dealt with. Hazards seem to be a problem if the opponent can use fighting types to pressure Empoleon out

TOTAL: 16/20

Originality: 1.5/5
The only thing original/new is the specially offensive agility gatr :/

Use of Theme 2/5
Dragalge and Feraligtr were both vital to the team, although Dragalge is a freebie for an underdog slot. Props for Feraligatr doe.

Effectiveness: 5.5/10 The team itself looks solid on paper with a good core and synergy. I would give more but the fact that you couldn't produce a win is preventing me from doing so.

TOTAL: 9/20

Originiality: 2/5 Nothing really original bar offensive bat and Magnet Rise Coballion and those arent exactly completely original anyways...

Use of Theme: 3/5 Your underdogs, while lacking in originality are definitely an integral part of the squad. And you have enough quantity of underdogs to score some more points.

Effectivness: 8.5/10 This is a really good team with no glaring flaws

TOTAL: 13.5/20

Iron Chef Euphonos is here to rate dishes, as promised! For those first-time participants in the challenge or those who forgot how I rate dishes, please confer to this post.

In my own rubric of judging this round's Iron Chef Challenge, the premise of the theme is to unlock a qualified Pokemon's potential in dealing massive damage to the opposing Pokemon. Those who managed to explore such qualified Pokemon from the lower tiers will grant a considerably high grade in both Creativity and Use of Theme.

CREATIVITY: 2 / 5
Double-Edge Porygon-Z and Special Attacker Sharpedo are the most notable members of your team that could warrant the (slightest) surprise. The remaining members aren't too earth-shattering as they are relatively standard to my senses. Overall, if we face each other, I wouldn't be fazed by your Pokemon and their respective sets, and play as if nothing special happened.

USE OF THEME: 3.5 / 5
The selection of your Pokemon is somehow uncommon (minus Dragalge, which is used on 90% of teams), but you managed to incorporate boosting items (Choice Band, Life Orb, Draco Plate), boosting high-powered moves which allows you to dent teams as much as possible. What holds back from giving this team a full 5, in my opinion, is the lack of a sweeper after the opposing team is worn out by the attacks the underdogs made, and Slowking is quite slow to pull it off.

EFFECTIVENESS: 8 / 10
While the team isn't very creative at most, the team has almost all of the fundamental principles for a very effective team. As stated before, it lacks a cherry on top--a more effective win condition to take advantage of the dents the underdogs dish to opposing teams. Otherwise, this team is no laughing matter as it is a very solid team, and I'm hoping for the best in this team. Keep it up!
TOTAL SCORE: 13.5 / 20

CREATIVITY: 2 / 5
I'm guessing you're inspired after Serperior for Uber's Swellow in the last round, so you're itching to use it again, and you made a bolder move by ditching Protect for Quick Attack. Then, there is a Salamence set almost all people anticipated for, until you revealed Hydro Pump. Yeah, I wasn't fazed by those things when we battled.

USE OF THEME: 3 / 5
A typical Dragalge set, and a near-generic Swellow set: that is pretty much it, although I do appreciate Swellow being your main underdog of the team.

EFFECTIVENESS: 6 / 10
As far as your team composition is concerned, you have a lot of issues against two spammable, bipolar types: Fire, as seen in your match against Iron Chef LilOu, and Ice. Most notably, your VoltTurn core is extremely vulnerable to Fire attacks; therefore, I could suggest a Probopass (over Forretress) here, as it can pair well with Mega Beedrill in my experience (and it has Volt Switch and Stealth Rock; lack of Rapid Spin can be mitigated by Salamence's Defog > Hydro Pump) so as to lessen the weakness to Fire attacks. Next, Mega Abomasnow and Mamoswine could have a field day on this team, since two-thirds of your team is weak to Ice; once Forretress is down, everyone else is vulnerable to Ice Shards; therefore I could suggest Rotom-Heat over Rotom-Mow in this instance to boost your team resistance to Ice. Also, if you consider Swellow to become your sweeper, I'd rather use Flame Orb over Toxic Orb (if you want a long-run sweep); and have Protect over U-turn or Quick Attack. Otherwise, this team has a lot of potential; patch up those weaknesses and you will get a solid team.
TOTAL SCORE: 11 / 20

CREATIVITY: 5 / 5
From the start of our battle, your team has interesting choices in Uxie and Togetic, and as the battle progresses, other Pokemon that are standard at first glance somehow surprised me: your Feraligatr acting like Gyarados in OU, Honchkrow having Special Attacks at its disposal, and Cobalion revealed to have Magnet Rise (although I have seen that before). Your team, being fun to watch with your interesting choice of Pokemon and sets, grants a considerably high grade here.

USE OF THEME: 4 / 5
You managed to incorporate two of your underdogs (Dragalge, Honchkrow) to punch holes to the opposition, and another underdog (Cobalion) to sweep the team once it's weakened, especially given two of your (dark horse) Pokemon (Uxie, Togetic) serving as the defensive backbone of the team.

EFFECTIVENESS: 7 / 10
Little nitpicks here: Uxie cannot Recycle Leftovers when it is Knocked Off, and Dragalge's better off using Sludge Wave > Sludge Bomb especially Chesnaught is still running rampant in this tier, yet. Anyway, I find no glaring issues with this team, but since your Uxie's set don't work that much because of the Recycle mechanics, I'd rather run Thunder Wave or U-turn on Uxie, too. Toxic Spikes, on the other hand, isn't that much needed for the team, so you could either run a different Dragalge set (Choice Specs, ehem), or use another Pokemon over Dragalge (because you're qualified with both Cobalion and Honchkrow, anyway). Otherwise, it's a very solid team that you could have won given certain circumstances; not gonna lie--I was somehow nervous when I encountered such solid teams like yours (a piece of advice: next time, win a battle against other Iron Chefs if you lose to me; I could have given you a much higher grade than a 7 in Effectiveness).
TOTAL SCORE: 16 / 20

CREATIVITY: 4 / 5
Not gonna lie, you surprised me with your unique Lead Forretress set; I know Earthquake is just slapped there just for Chandelure, but it's actually more than bringing Chandelure down--you're bringing a Pokemon integral to the whole team down. And then, you're another bearer of Magnet Rise Cobalion, although you're the first one to use it (since DaSpoofy didn't manage to use it in our battle), catching my Mamoswine off guard. Other than Heliolisk running Toxic and Mega Blastoise not running Rapid Spin (as back-up), the team is pretty much standard.

USE OF THEME: 4 / 5
I liked how you incorporate your underdogs Forretress and Cobalion to set up what the team needs (Stealth Rock) and to set up and sweep the whole team once the opposing team is weakened, respectively. Finally, the rest of the teammates exerting a lot of pressure to the opposition gives great offensive synergy with your chosen underdogs.

EFFECTIVENESS: 8 / 10
This offensive team of yours, although you managed to pull it off against my team, could struggle against Fire spam, most especially a well-played Sacred Fire Entei, because it could burn your Forretress (which, in turn, weakens its Earthquake) and Mega Blastoise (your only Fire resist). Otherwise, with enough pressure for defensive Pokemon not to do their job, your team is no laughing matter. Keep it up!
TOTAL SCORE: 16 / 20

CREATIVITY: 3 / 5
The Pokemon you selected were standard at first glance, until I would ask myself if we face other: "why the hell is your Exploud and Blastoise that fast?" There I found out that your Exploud and Blastoise both hold Choice Scarf, which is a creative take on your part. However, aside from having Fell Stinger on Beedrill and Lunar Dance on a Defensive Cresselia, the rest of the team is standard in my senses, which, in turn, will not faze me in the long run.

USE OF THEME: 4 / 5
You made a valiant effort to incorporate your Underdog core (in the form of Exploud and Blastoise) to punch holes to the opposition, although not strong enough because it isn't boosted by Choice Specs; although your team doesn't have anything to clean the team up once the opposition has been worn out (which will be explained in the Effectiveness criterion).

EFFECTIVENESS: 5 / 10
Unfortunately, this team is one of the exemplars of "creativity doesn't always translate to effectiveness". Although your efforts in denting your opposition with the Underdog core are already there, you lack a much solid win condition to secure your victories. Since your team is more of an offensive team that gives up much momentum, it would be difficult for you to exert pressure to the opposition with how your team goes (and yes, seconding Serperior for Uber's post of not having a profound description of your team).

TOTAL SCORE: 12 / 20

CREATIVITY: 4 / 5
I was definitely surprised when you brought up Raichu and Swoobat in your team. You explored a lot of interesting options for your Underdog team, and this would be interlinked with the Use of Theme criterion. Plus, the addition of Shuca Empoleon can take other Ground-types by surprise. While the rest of the team is standard, these three Pokemon are enough to warrant you a considerably high score in this criterion.

USE OF THEME: 5 / 5
While Raichu and Swoobat in themselves are interesting, it also fulfilled the underdog spirit. The rest of the team is enough to exert pressure on the opposition while the underdogs are there to set-up and deal massive damage (or even sweep) late-game, which is very unique among all the teams I've seen.

EFFECTIVENESS: 8 / 10
Not gonna lie, your team is very dangerous given your underdogs are supported with VoltTurn. While Empoleon is one of the defensive backbones of the team, I feel like a well-played Fighting-type would exert a lot of pressure against it, hence hazards being somehow problematic there as Serperior for Uber said. Otherwise, I have seen no glaring flaw in this team, and damn, you managed to pull it off against one of my teams! Keep it up!
TOTAL SCORE: 17 / 20

CREATIVITY: 1 / 5
Agility Special Feraligatr is your only "most creative" set here. Nothing special happened during our battle, so it's a clear-cut 1 for this criterion.

USE OF THEME: 3 / 5
You have a valiant effort in incorporating fairly common underdogs (Crobat and Dragalge) and one novelty underdog in Special Feraligatr, and they're capable of doing what should be doing. Unless... (in the Effectiveness criterion)

EFFECTIVENESS: 6.5 / 10
Your team is fairly solid discounting the massive Ice weakness, not gonna lie about it. What you should improve on is how you play with the team (especially with your attitude), because from what I've seen, you still have a fair chance of winning with all the hax everywhere. You should improve your battling skills, and with a solid team you'll get good results. I guess Hogg's Better Battlers project could give you an avenue for that, but, oh, you're already banned in the Forums :(
TOTAL SCORE: 10.5 / 20

CREATIVITY: 2 / 5
Although you defeated me, you gave me nearly nothing to surprise me with except for the Magnet Rise Cobalion which you didn't display, and the Lead Forretress set without the Earthquake is disappointing. The rest of the team is pretty much a standard fare, discounting the Dragon Pulse on Dragalge being a neat addition to it.

USE OF THEME: 4.5 / 5
Your team has a unique characteristic that stood out among the rest: more than half of your team are underdogs, albeit quite common. Plus, they're all capable of doing what they should be doing, like setting up hazards from Forretress, sweeping with Cobalion. If you could have explored more underdogs, I would have given you a perfect grade here (which in turn, raise your Creativity rating, too).

EFFECTIVENESS: 8.5 / 10
Pretty much the same comment I would say in your team as r0ady's, but with a more solid win condition. Congratulations for pulling off that victory of yours against my team!

Yo, would like to apologize for not helping with the judging part as I promised 3 weeks ago, but irl stuff like trips and University have taken way more than I expected, not letting me do the thing. Thanks lord, though, I'll be free the from now on, so I'll be able to receive more challenges (sorry to the ppl who vm'd me and I couldn't find a time) and judge.

I'm going to complete judging after I get home from the province later. Got too busy preparing for the UUGS lately.

UPDATE: Okay, it's halfway through. Something strange happened to my eyes (they wanted to shut for a while), so I have to take a break. I'll get back to the remaining four dishes tomorrow morning (hint: I'm in GMT +8), and I guess Cloud Cuckooland is excited for it, lol.

Okay, I'm done judging for the day. Sorry for the delay because I can't get over with my win against my UUGS Round 1 opponent last night using one of my Iron Chef teams.

Chairman Hogg, you may proceed.
