Welcome to Smogon! Take a moment to read the Introduction to Smogon for a run-down on everything Smogon, and make sure you take some time to read the global rules.
ciao (that means hello in french) everyone. due to the bustling activity this thread experiences in the latter half of the week, ive come up with a hip new way to get everyone involved on an important change i want to make to the thread:
lets say you're in a 1v1 situation, Weezing is like guaranteed to click Will-O-Wisp. you SD on the dodge burn and get a free +2 boost with SD. next turn you bop the Weezing into the next dimension with a MB Earthquake, which has a 75% to OHKO at full: +2 252+ Atk Mold Breaker Pinsir Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 148+ Def Weezing: 320-378 (95.8 - 113.1%) -- 75% chance to OHKO
Weezing typically hard walls SD Aboma, being immune to Earthquake and taking negligible damage from boosted Ice Shard and Wood Hammer/Seed Bomb. Blizzard allows Aboma to do huge damage to unsuspecting Weezing, easily 2HKO'ing. This then clears the way for Abomasnow to sweep late game, or for a Fighting type such as Sawk to punch holes through the opposing team.
92 SpA Life Orb Abomasnow Blizzard vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Weezing: 211-250 (63.1 - 74.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Black Sludge recovery
This set also has the benefits of luring in Pelipper and Steelix, two other common answers to SD Abomasnow n_n
Edit: Forgot to mention that I first saw Punchshroom post about this set in an old NP thread, credit to him!
Omastar is one of those mons that is really annoying to lure creatively, and honestly it just sets up hazards as our lures switches-in :[ Anyways, me and ~Eternally came up with this set, it's not that good but really funny and sometimes effective regardless.
Garbodor @ Power Herb
Ability: Weak Armor/Aftermath
EVs: 216 Atk / 40 SpA / 252 Spe
Naughty Nature - Solar Beam
- Gunk Shot
- Explosion
- Spikes
Garbodor means free hazards for omastar, so you ask me "what does this have over focus blast or seed bomb", well, when focus blast hits omastar has a really good chance of not getting 2HKO'd, therefore getting at least 2 hazards or scalding you. Seed bomb does hit oma for a 2HKO, but misses out on other things that solar beam OHKO's (not revelant, but I'm talking about dancing rhydon, rare quagsires, etc.).
40 SpA Garbodor Solar Beam vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Omastar: 328-388 (95.3 - 112.7%) -- 75% chance to OHKO
Again, it's not really good compared to other lures and you'd rather be running seed bomb/focus blast most of the times, but it does its job and can probably find its place in some teams :>
Thunderbolt Weezing is a nice Omastar lure that isn't completely worthless outside of just Omastar. Taunt shuts down hazards, obviously, but omastar can usually win the matchup with scald + burns out-damaging Weezing's Sludge Bomb + Poisons. Thunderbolt scores a sick 2HKO after Stealth Rock damage while still being useful for nailing Mantine.
Charizard
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Fire Blast
- Focus Blast
- Air Slash
- Roost
You look like standard.acrozard from team preview since it shows up as itemless which means Omastar can switch in easily, but then you reveal the itemless Focus Blast and OHKO it with rocks, or 2HKO it with any combo of your moves
252 SpA Charizard Focus Blast vs. 252 HP / 8 SpD Omastar: 306-362 (88.9 - 105.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
252 SpA Charizard Air Slash vs. 252 HP / 8 SpD Omastar: 72-85 (20.9 - 24.7%) -- 95.5% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock
252 SpA Charizard Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 8 SpD Omastar: 52-62 (15.1 - 18%) -- possible 5HKO after Stealth Rock
252 SpA Life Orb Haunter Giga Drain vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Omastar: 520-614 (151.6 - 179%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Considering that Omastar resists Haunter's STAB Sludge Bomb and Shadow Ball can only do ~70%, Giga Drain is a nice lure to any physically defensive Omastar that thinks it can easily get up Stealth Rocks against a Haunter. Since Haunter can easily out-speed it and decimate it with an OHKO Giga Drain, I think it's a pretty nice lure for Defensive Omastar. Only issue is if the Omastar is running a Rindo Berry...
252 SpA Life Orb Haunter Giga Drain vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Rindo Berry Omastar: 260-307 (75.8 - 89.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
Hello, I'm going to be reviving this thread as of now so get ready to lure some more threats!
Updated archive by the way so make sure to check that out to see all the past winners and their lures!
This time we had a lot of submissions but the winners for this round are: TTFTW's Solar Beam Power Herb Garbodor Disjunction's Thunderbolt Weezing Raseri's Grass Knot Special Kecleon
Sceptile @ Life Orb
Ability: Overgrow
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature - Rock Slide
- Giga Drain
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Leaf Storm
Not sure if this is considered a good lure since everyone uses it now, but rock slide is a great lure for scyther since its 2hko'd by it. All you need is rocks up or some damage on scyther.
4 Atk Life Orb Sceptile Rock Slide vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Eviolite Scyther: 203-239 (59.1 - 69.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
Kangaskhan (F) @ Life Orb
Ability: Scrappy
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Rock Tomb
- Return
- Sucker Punch
- Earthquake
252+ Atk Life Orb Kangaskhan Rock Tomb vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Eviolite Scyther: 244-291 (71.1 - 84.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
inb4 why not use Rock Slide. With Rock Tomb you're lowering Scyther's speed by one stage. Rock Slide has a 31.3% chance to OHKO and I ain't a fan of relying on rolls. With Rock Tomb you can then out-speed the Scyther and either kill it off with another move, or predict a switch and smack the incoming pokemon with a STAB Return or something.
Lilligant @ Life Orb
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Quiver Dance
- Giga Drain
- Hidden Power Rock
- Sleep Powder
Not crazy innovative, but it's one of the most satisfying feelings to click HP Rock at +1 and watch their Scyther drop from full. Unlike HP Fire, HP Rock clean 2HKOs and OHKOs at +0 and +1 respectively. If you've got rocks up, all you have to do is click HP Rock on the switch. If you don't, you can Quiver Dance on the switch, take Scyther's life from full, and then proceed to rampage.
252 SpA Life Orb Lilligant Hidden Power Rock vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Eviolite Scyther: 244-291 (71.1 - 84.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+1 252 SpA Life Orb Lilligant Hidden Power Rock vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Eviolite Scyther: 364-432 (106.1 - 125.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Scyther is like, "Watch me get my daily serving of vegetables real quick" and Lilligant's all like "Not today, Satan!"
Pretty simple but effective lure for Bulky Scyther. Garb is usually free setup for Scyther but 4X super effective Rock Blast does huge damage, sometimes OHKO'ing and always scoring a 2HKO. Garb has a niche over other checks to Scyther such as Lilligant and Sceptile because it can chew even a +2 Aerial Ace, and retaliate back with it's Rock coverage move.
252+ Atk Garbodor Rock Blast (3 hits) vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Eviolite Scyther: 240-288 (69.9 - 83.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Garbodor Rock Blast (4 hits) vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Eviolite Scyther: 320-384 (93.2 - 111.9%) -- approx. 68.8% chance to OHKO
8 Atk Technician Scyther Aerial Ace vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Garbodor: 126-148 (41.8 - 49.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
+2 8 Atk Technician Scyther Aerial Ace vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Garbodor: 250-295 (83 - 98%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
Steelix @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 92 HP / 252 SpA / 164 Spe
Modest Nature
- Dark Pulse
- Earth Power
- Flash Cannon
- Stealth Rock
Special Lix is a pretty fun lure for Rotom, having an advantage over physical sheer force by not being completely crippled by Wisp. Rotom is usually a pretty safe switch into lix, so it isnt too difficult to lure it in, as long as you haven't revealed anything apart from rocks yet. The Defensive Colbur set gets 2HKOd with ease, whilst the offensive set gets KO'd after rocks.
252+ SpA Life Orb Sheer Force Steelix Dark Pulse vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Colbur Berry Rotom: 117-139 (38.4 - 45.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252+ SpA Life Orb Sheer Force Steelix Dark Pulse vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Rotom: 234-278 (76.9 - 91.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ SpA Life Orb Sheer Force Steelix Dark Pulse vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Rotom: 234-278 (97 - 115.3%) -- 87.5% chance to OHKO
Hitmonchan (M) @ Custap Berry
Ability: Iron Fist
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stone Edge
- Natural Gift
- Drain Punch
- Ice Punch
This hitmonchan is a good lure because it can counter rotom in 2 different ways. So usually you see rotom coming in on a Hitmonchan because Chan would normally spin or use drain punch. Not having access to knock off is another reason why rotom is one of the better switch ins for hitmonchan. This is where the custap berry natural gift comes in. Custap berry is a ghost type when using natural gift and can 2HKO opposing rotoms. Stone edge is another great coverage move for hitmonchan. Say your hitmonchan is close to being at low to no HP and you didn't activate your custap berry. You have now have a speed boosted hitmonchan, if custap activated, to out-speed rotom and easily kill opposing rotom with stone edge.
Here is a calc of how much custap berry natural gift does to a rotom:
252 Atk Custap Berry Hitmonchan Natural Gift (100 BP Ghost) vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Rotom: 232-274 (76.3 - 90.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
Hariyama @ Assault Vest
Ability: Guts
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 SpD / 4 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Fake Out
- Close Combat
- Knock Off
- Stone Edge
Rotom usually likes to come in and burn Thick Fat Yama but if your team isn't too vulnerable to wallbreakers like Aurorus and Magmortar then Guts is a perfectly viable alternative, also letting Hariyama reliably switch into Scalds from things like Lanturn. Colbur variants can take a Knock Off but Guts-boosted Stone Edge will do a lot of damage regardless of whether Rotom's running the berry or not. Knock Off obviously destroys any non-Colbur set. You can't really stop it from Volt Switching out after the Burn, but you don't take much damage from it and you can throw out a Guts-boosted Close Combat if you predict it.
252+ Atk Guts Hariyama Stone Edge vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Rotom: 209-246 (68.9 - 81.1%)
252+ Atk Guts Hariyama Stone Edge vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Rotom: 209-247 (86.7 - 102.4%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
Defense Mantine usually screams for Rotom to come in, predicting a weak attack or a defog. This set retains a lot of the utility of using Mantine while changing its role to a wallbreaker that can help the team in other ways as well.
vs offensive Rotom:
252+ SpA Choice Specs Mantine Hydro Pump vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Rotom: 265-313 (109.5 - 129.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
vs defensive Rotom:
252+ SpA Choice Specs Mantine Hydro Pump vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Rotom: 265-313 (87.1 - 102.9%) -- 18.8% chance to OHKO
Weezing @ Expert Belt
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 244 HP / 252 SpA / 12 Spe
Modest Nature
- Shadow Ball
- Sludge Bomb
- Fire Blast
- Thunderbolt / Wil-O-Wisp
Weezing is typically a super free switch in for Rotom as it resists Weezing's STAB and doesn't mind a burn all that much, but Expert Belt Shadow Ball OHKO's the Spell Tag set after Rocks and does huge damage to the bulky set. Expert Belt is used over Specs as to not leave you in an unfavorable position by locking yourself into Shadow Ball. Wil-O-Wisp is a neat option in the fourth slot so Weezing can still semi- effectively handle physically offensive pokemon such as Kangaskhan and Tauros that assume you're locked into a move that can't hurt them. This set also has utility in luring Pokemon such as Xatu with it's vast coverage options.
252+ SpA Expert Belt Weezing Shadow Ball vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Rotom: 216-254 (89.2 - 104.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
252+ SpA Expert Belt Weezing Shadow Ball vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Rotom: 216-254 (71.2 - 83.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
Samurott @ Life Orb
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Ice Beam
- Grass Knot
I asked Jarii for team ideas and this was the first thing that came to his mind. normally, Ferroseed is a pretty easy switch-in to Samurott, taking only max. 25% from its attacks. HP Fire, combined with say SD Sceptile can be really devastating as Ferroseed is normally a quite reliable Sceptile check.
252 SpA Life Orb Samurott Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 112 SpD Eviolite Ferroseed: 75-90 (25.6 - 30.8%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
252 SpA Life Orb Samurott Hydro Pump vs. 252 HP / 112 SpD Eviolite Ferroseed: 69-82 (23.6 - 28%) -- 82.1% chance to 4HKO
both Hydro Pump and Ice Beam get Ferroseed up to the point where HP Fire kills, almost everytime.
252 SpA Life Orb Samurott Hidden Power Fire vs. 252 HP / 112 SpD Eviolite Ferroseed: 203-239 (69.5 - 81.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
