Project Lure that threat [Week 37: SubToxic Mantine]

OP adapted from Orphic's old thread, which was adapted from unfixable's old thread.

Lures have been around in Pokemon since its conception, acting as sets that draw in the Pokemon's usual checks or counters and expose their weaknesses with surprise factor, be it by KO'ing, weakening, or crippling them for a teammate to take advantage of. While a good lure can often perform a much-needed role to your team, they're often hit and miss and some can prove to be a waste. A bad lure may be good for one thing, but sacrifices a key component of what makes it viable in the first place. For example, while Nasty Plot Cacturne might seem good on paper to break pasr defensive teams, it lacks any way to handle offensive teams, and you're almost always better off using the standard Mixed Attacker set.

Similarly to other projects, each week I will nominate a common wall or threat that teams typically struggle with, while the NU community will nominate the lures they find effective over the following week. Please provide a description of your lure with calcs to back it up; replays are heavily encouraged, however not nesecary.

After the week has passed, I will pick a 3 winners for the best and or most creative lure to the given threat. The winner and their lure will be saved and archived.

Things to consider when nominating a lure:

1. Does this Pokemon have to sacrifice anything important? If you're losing a key part of a set just for an uncommon threat that isn't even lured in that well, it's not worth it and this is usually a bad lure.

2. Does this Pokemon consistently perform its role? If you're sacrificing too much and not benefiting from its unique role on a regular basis, it's not a good lure.

3. Does this Pokemon gain anything important when using this moveset? The contrary to point number one, does this pokemon or the team benefit from the lure.

4. Could this method be better aided through teammates? Does your lure need team support to carry out it's role effectively? If so, it's probably not worth using.

So at this point you might be asking yourself, but Earth, how will I go about making posts to show off my cool new lures! Well you're in luck, because here's some examples I've whipped up!

Example of a bad lure:

Clefairy @ Eviolite
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Soft-Boiled
- Growl
- Thunder Wave
- Knock Off

I Beat The Linoone With This Set Its Good

Example of a good lure:

Hariyama @ Assault Vest
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Close Combat
- Knock Off
- Bullet Punch
- Stone Edge

Stone Edge Hariyama proves to be an effective lure in the current metagame, hitting the Flying-types, namely Pelipper, Scyther, and Mantine, that would otherwise check Hariyama quite effectively, with the added bonus of hitting Xatu past its potential Colbur Berry. Good partners for this set would be the likes of Swords Dance Samurott or Steelix, who appreciate and can take advantage of these Flying-types being lured.

Week 1: Steelix

Steelix @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 244 HP / 136 Atk / 128 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Heavy Slam
- Earthquake
- Toxic

Post successful Steelix lures that you've found, and I'll choose the 3 best ones in a week from now!

You can now post!

My lure would be special skuntank. A pretty standard lure that works most of the time since most players just switch in steelix into skutank with out thinking and get 2hko'd with fire blast+dark pulse.

Skuntank @ Expert Belt/Life Orb
Ability: Aftermath
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA
Modest Nature
- Defog
- Dark Pulse
- Hidden Power [Grass]
- Fire Blast
252+ SpA Skuntank Dark Pulse vs. 244 HP / 128 SpD Steelix: 115-136 (32.6 - 38.6%) -- 4.3% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Expert Belt Skuntank Fire Blast vs. 244 HP / 128 SpD Steelix: 254-300 (72.1 - 85.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Kecleon @ Life Orb
Ability: Protean
EVs: 196 Atk/ 200 Sp.Atk / 116 Spe
Mild Nature
- Knock Off
- Sucker Punch
- Fire Blast
- Iron Tail

People switch lix in cause they see what they think is a mono physical mon, then get ohkod by fire blast

Archeops
Ability: Defeatist
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Focus Blast
- Acrobatics
- Roost
- Filler

Focus blast archeops is a pretty cool lure to things like Rhydon and Steelix, because Archeops attract them a lot, so it's pretty easy to catch them on a switch in.

Let's calc how many damages Archeops do against Steelix:

0 SpA Archeops Focus Blast vs. 244 HP / 128 SpD Steelix: 226-268 (64.2 - 76.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

(Vivillon) @ Focus Sash
Ability: Compound Eyes
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hurricane
- Sleep Powder
- Endeavor
- Energy Ball

Not really creative but a lot of players like to send in steelix after vivillon sleeps something to heavy slam and put it in priority range predicting it to be a QD variant, it heavy slams and you endeavor to put it in range of something on your team that likes steelix gone (klinklang, musharna, kanga, archeops, etc)

Klinklang @ Life Orb
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Flash Cannon
- Volt Switch/Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Substitute/Toxic/Signal Beam

Special Klinklang is a set I originally saw Disjunction post in the Creative Sets thread, and it works perfectly here as a Steelix Lure. This set has only gotten better with the recent drop of Abomasnow, as Klinklang appreciates the drop in Lanturn usage. Flash Cannon and Electric coverage are pretty much a must, but HP Fire is all Klinklang needs in order to properly lure in Steelix so the 4th slot is really whatever your team needs. Good partners are mons like Scyther, SD Samu, and normal types like Swellow and Kangaskhan that appreciate Steelix being gone.

252+ SpA Life Orb Klinklang Hidden Power Fire vs. 244 HP / 128 SpD Steelix: 148-177 (42 - 50.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Edit: PS! Is down for me atm but i'll edit in some solid replays with a team I put together around this later :]

upload_2016-1-15_12-31-48.png

(Garbodor) @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Aftermath
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Spikes
- Gunk Shot
- Focus Blast
- Thunderbolt

Mixed Garbodor is a nice way to lure steelix or at least heavily damage if your Garbodor isn't garbage and can hit two Focus Blasts.

252 SpA Garbodor Focus Blast vs. 252 HP / 128 SpD Steelix: 192-226 (54.2 - 63.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Bonus:
You can outspeed and 2HKO Pivot Xatu, Mantine and OHKO pelipper which are 3 common ways to remove hazards and you easily 2hko Hitmonchan with Gunk Shot.
Just pointing this out to show its not a crappy gimmick lure.

Audino @ Audinite
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 168 HP / 72 Def / 252 SpA / 16 Spe
Modest Nature
- Calm Mind
- Dazzling Gleam
- Fire Blast
- Psychic/Surf

Steelix is one of the most common and reliable switch-ins to Mega-Audino in the tier, making lure-dino extremely effective at its job. Fire Blast takes a hefty chunk out of Lix, effectively preventing it from switching in any longer. If it chooses to stay in, Audino can simply outspeed and dispose of it cleanly. Surf is an option over Psychic for a more reliable 2HKO, at the cost of losing coverage on Poison types.

252+ SpA Mega Audino Fire Blast vs. 244 HP / 128 SpD Steelix: 226-268 (64.2 - 76.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Mega Audino Surf vs. 244 HP / 128 SpD Steelix: 186-220 (52.8 - 62.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

Mawile @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Naughty Nature
- Swords Dance
- Play Rough
- Sucker Punch
- Fire Blast

This Mawile variant can lure Steelix in and 2HKO him with Fire Blast. Honestly this isn't too creative because every Mawile should be running Fire Blast nowadays because of Lix.

4 SpA Life Orb Sheer Force Mawile Fire Blast vs. 244 HP / 128 SpD Steelix: 200-237 (56.8 - 67.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Klinklang @ Leftovers
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 80 HP / 252 Atk / 176 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Magnet Rise
- Shift Gear
- Gear Grind
- Substitute / Return

I'll be the second dude to post a Klinklang set, but Magnet Rise is probably Klinklang's best set right now because of Steelix. Magnet Rise completely negates the damage from Steelix's Earthquake, forcing it to rely on Heavy Slam to deal pitiful damage. You can choose between setting up a Substitute or Shift Gears on lix as it struggles to touch you. This set also helps beat Klinklang set up on some other mons, such as Claydol, Rhydon, and Earthquake Kangaskhan.

Musharna @ Leftovers
Ability: Synchronize
EVs: 240 HP / 252 Def / 16 Spe
Bold Nature
- Calm Mind
- Psychic / Psyshock
- Moonlight
- Baton Pass

Doesn't KO Steelix but turns it into a liability for another teammate to abuse. With a small amount of Speed EVs, Musharna can always outspeed Steelix and pass a Calm Mind boost to a teammate that can take better care of it, such as Weezing or Vileplume, which are immune to the Toxic that Steelix should always use to stop Musharna from potentially sweeping past it with Stored Power. Alternatively you can bring in something like Flame Charge Pyroar on the Toxic and either blow some holes in the opponent's team or outright sweep. Obviously doesn't work against Roar variants.

This week's winners are...
TTFTW's Endeavor Vivillion!
Oda's Focus Blast Garbador!
and Disjunction's Magnet Rise Klinklang!
(these will be archived tmrw morning because i need sleep)

For week 2 we'll be luring...
Xatu!

Xatu @ Colbur Berry
Ability: Magic Bounce
EVs: 252 HP / 176 Def / 80 Spe
Timid Nature
- Psychic
- Roost
- Heat Wave
- U-turn

Gourgeist-Super @ Choice Band
Ability: Frisk
EVs: x HP / 252 Atk / x Spe
Adamant Nature
- Explosion
- Shadow Sneak
- Seed Bomb
- Trick

252+ Atk Choice Band Gourgeist-Super Explosion vs. 252 HP / 176 Def Xatu: 400-471 (119.7 - 141%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Pretty cool set that I've seen Kiyo use often and while its certainly not the most optimal set its far from a gimmick as it is a nice balance between a hard hitter and something that can take hits well in return. Xatu is almost always a fail safe switch in to Gourgeist-XL as it bounces back Leech Seed and Will-O-Wisp while taking minimal damage from Foul Play (this being under the assumption its the defensive set), but with this set it'll get blown back by Explosion.

Rapture

I got so much time today

Mesprit @ Colbur Berry
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Psychic
- Hidden Power [Ground]
- Ice Beam

252 SpA Mesprit Ice Beam vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Xatu: 226-268 (67.8 - 80.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
Offensive Mesprit does a good job of luring Xatu who think they can block the hazards or T-waves that Mesprit likes to throw out. Ice Beam is also far from an unpractical choice since it's pretty useful for hitting mons like Scyther and Rhydon for respectable damage. Max speed Mesprit also outspeeds 80 speed Xatu, which is important so that Xatu can't U-turn out or try to roost off the damage.

Garbodor @ Toxic Plate
Ability: Weak Armor
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Spikes
- Toxic Spikes
- Gunk Shot
- Explosion

Xatu loves to switch into garbs to prevent spikes, Offensive stacking garb is really fun and stops that, with max attack and toxic plate it easily 2hkos xatu while jolly allows it to outspeed those creeping adamant sawk.

252 Atk Toxic Plate Garbodor Gunk Shot vs. 252 HP / 176 Def Xatu: 204-240 (61 - 71.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Hariyama @ Assault Vest
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 156 HP / 252 Atk / 100 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Close Combat
- Knock Off
- Bullet Punch
- Stone Edge

Gen 4 sprites are cool *_*. Anyway here we don't have anything too crazy but definitely a really effective lure for Xatu. Xatu loves switching in on Yama, and Stone Edge allows for Hariyama to bypass Xatu's Colbur Berry, doing massive damage and often putting it into Bullet Punch range or just OHKO'ing when including Stealth Rock. Stone Edge is also a cool lure for Flying types that like to switch into Hairyama in general such as Mantine, Pelipper, and Scyther.

252+ Atk Hariyama Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 176 Def Xatu: 244-288 (73 - 86.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Hariyama Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 176 Def Xatu: 244-288 (73 - 86.2%) -- 81.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
252+ Atk Hariyama Bullet Punch vs. 252 HP / 176 Def Xatu: 49-58 (14.6 - 17.3%) -- possible 6HKO

Hitmonchan (M) @ Assault Vest/Fist Plate/Life Orb
Ability: Iron Fist
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Drain Punch
- Mach Punch
- Ice Punch/Thunder Punch
- Rapid Spin

With Jolly Chan can 2HKO Xatus that try and creep Adamant Sawk and 2HKO with your coverage move of choice since you outspeed them with Jolly. You miss out on alot if you go with Thunder Punch but you can also hit the increasingly popular Mantines and Pelippers flying about.

252 Atk Iron Fist Hitmonchan Ice Punch vs. 252 HP / 176 Def Xatu: 182-216 (54.4 - 64.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Also Chan hits a much nicer speed tier with Jolly even though the lack of power is noticeable but you can get surprise KOs or clutch last ditch spins on the likes of Jolly Barb, all the neutral base 80s such as Shiftry and Mespirit, max speed 70s, max speed neutral Magmortar, max speed neutral Skunk, Adamant Sawk and max speed Claydol :]

Celesteela is Life

Kecleon @ Life Orb
Ability: Protean
EVs: 192 Atk / 200 SpA / 116 Spe
Mild Nature
- Sucker Punch
- Fire Blast
- Iron Tail
- Knock Off

Mega Audino is a common switchin to Kecleon due to it's massive bulk meaning it can live basically any hit Kecleon can throw at it, but Iron Tail punishes the switchin, having a great chance to 2HKO MegaDino. (Unless it misses >->) Kek's weakening of MegaDino paves the way for other teammates to break through MegaDino, and possibly the opposing team.

192 Atk Life Orb Protean Kecleon Iron Tail vs. 252 HP / 208+ Def Mega Audino: 198-237 (48.2 - 57.8%) -- 93.8% chance to 2HKO

Piloswine @ Eviolite
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Ice Shard
- Toxic

Toxic Pilo is actually a pretty neat lure for Mega-Audino. Most Audino come in on Pilo figuring it to be total set up bait, but Toxic completely shuts down Audino's CM shenanigans and wears it down really quickly. Dark types such as Shiftry that appreciate Mega-Audino gone are neat partners for this set.

Take Azelfie

More flags more fun

Primeape @ Choice Band
Ability: Defiant
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Close Combat
- U-turn
- Gunk Shot
- Stone Edge

252 Atk Choice Band Primeape Gunk Shot vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mega Audino: 206-244 (50.2 - 59.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Sawk can run Poison Jab but it doesn't OHKO, also useful for hitting Lilligant while outspeeding as well as hitting Clefairy which has gained some popularity.
