Tail Glow boosts Manaphy's Special Attack to great levels, making it a terrifying wallbreaker. Surf is the STAB move of choice, as Waterium Z Manaphy is found on hyper offensive playstyles, which do not have time to fish for possible Scald burns. Hydro Vortex from Surf is also much stronger than from Scald, which is notable when trying to break Pokemon such as Assault Vest Magearna and Unaware Clefable. Psychic is the best complementary move for Surf, since it prevents defensive threats such as Toxapex and Mega Venusaur from walling it. Rain Dance is the main difference this set has from the regular Tail Glow set, as Z-Rain Dance gives Manaphy a useful Speed raise for offensive teams. With Hydration, Rain Dance also allows Manaphy to heal status from possible Toxic Spikes and burns, making Manaphy only breakable through regular attacks, which is close to impossible considering it is often used with Aurora Veil.

Set Details
========

Waterium Z gives Manaphy two options. Z-Rain Dance boosts Manaphy's Speed by one stage, which allows it to outpace the entire unboosted metagame. On the other hand, Hydro Vortex can be used to deal with very bulky Pokemon such as Assault Vest Magearna and Chansey and to break Unaware Clefable after setting up Rain Dance. Maximum Speed and a Timid nature is mandatory to outpace Choice Scarf Tapu Lele at +1 and Speed tie with Mega Charizard Y. Maximum Special Attack is necessary to hit as hard as possible. Hydration is Manaphy's only available ability, and it is a great one because Manaphy can heal itself from status in the rain.

Usage Tips
========

Manaphy should only try to set up when Aurora Veil is up, as it is very hard to collect two boosts otherwise. Manaphy should use its Z-Move depending on what type of playstyle it is against; offensive teams are very prone to Z-Rain Dance, while bulkier teams are greatly threatened by a well-timed Hydro Vortex. While this set has good matchups under Aurora Veil, Manaphy should still try to avoid damage, since it will need as much of its health as possible to gather two boosts. It should also not attempt to set up if there is a Pokemon that can end its sweep such as Haze Mantine or a healthy Tapu Bulu.

Team Options
========

Alolan Ninetales is Manaphy's best teammate, since it sets up Aurora Veil, which is critical for Manaphy to sweep. Waterium Z Manaphy should not be used on other playstyles because it will rarely get two boosts without the defensive support provided by the Aurora Veil. Sticky Web teams are a notable exception because Waterium Z Manaphy greatly improves the archetype's matchup against Mega Sableye and Mega Diancie, two Pokemon Shuckle and Smeargle struggle to set Sticky Web against.

Zygarde is a staple on Aurora Veil teams and appreciates Manaphy eliminating Tangrowth and Clefable, although usually at the cost of its ability to sweep. Magearna sets up on Pokemon Manaphy lures in such as Latios and Mantine. Other Pokemon found on Aurora Veil teams include Landorus-T, Mega Mawile, Mega Tyranitar, and Conkeldurr. Finally, Latias is a solid teammate to remove annoying entry hazards, mainly Spikes, and give Manaphy a second chance to sweep with Healing Wish.
