Mankey (Analysis)

Thanks! I'm pretty much trying to get this done ASAP now since for some reason I've developed a hatred for round-bodied Pokemon over the past few days (and I have to do Spheal too D:)

[Overview]

Mankey is a predictable, yet effective Pokemon. Mankey that immediately poses an offensive threat with a good physical movepool and high Attack stat. With three great abilities in Vital Spirit, Anger Point, and Competitive Spirit, Mankey can switch in on many attacks unaffected. With Mankey's popular Choice Scarf set, it can check a good amount of threats, namely Carvanha, Murkrow, and Scraggy. However, it Mankey still has its flaws. Meinfoo arguably does Mankey's job better with higher Attack, a better ability, and access to the powerful Hi Jump Kick. Mankey also got almost nothing new this time around to use effectively. Still, underestimate Mankey at your own peril, as it will always be a reliable and useful Pokemon to have on your team.

[SET]
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Close Combat
move 2: U-turn
move 3: Ice Punch / Death Gambit
move 4: Punishment
item: Choice Scarf
nature: Jolly
ability: Vital Spirit
evs: 116 HP / 196 Atk / 196 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Using Mankey's With its good Speed and Attack stats, it Mankey plays the role of a revenge killer very well. Close Combat is a great move that Mankey can abuse to deal big chunks of damage and switch out without worrying about any defensive drops to its defensive stats. With a Choice Scarf, Mankey has the ability to can also outspeed key threats such as Zuruggu, Murkrow, and Carvanha with the combination of Choice Scarf and Close Combat (The combination of CC and Scarf do not enable Mankey to outspeed the said threats. It is only the Choice Scarf that matters.). Close Combat also gives Mankey a reason to be used over Meinfoo as Mankey can use it comfortably without having to predict a switch-in to a Ghost-type. With U-turn, Mankey can switch out while causing damage along with scouting the opponent's switch-inas well as scout the opposing team on a switch. Because Since Mankey it lures in Psychic-types, Mankey can utilize this strategy effectively. When a Psychic-type Pokemon switches in, Mankey can smack them with U-turn and go to the appropriate Pokemon to finish them off. Another advantage Mankey has over Meinfoo is Ice Punch. Unlike Stone Edge, Ice Punch will hit Gligar very hard. Death Gambit is an attack that will easily defeat walls., (join the two sentences) since Mankey can use its has a relatively high HP stat to use this strategy effectively.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Mankey makes a great starting Pokemon lead due to its ability to switch while doing damage with U-turn. Mankey It has Assurance too, and can use it instead of Punishment if desired; however, Punishment will always be stronger unless the foe is hit with residual damage before Mankey attacks. Due to Death Gambit working better the more HP Mankey has, you can swap the Attack EVs with HP EVs if you're mainly using Mankey because of mainly for Death Gambit, though this will be a big waste of its offensive capabilities.

[SET]
name: Substitute + Encore
move 1: Substitute
move 2: Encore
move 3: U-turn / Ice Punch
move 4: Close Combat / Cross Chop
item: Oran Berry
nature: Jolly
ability: Anger Point
EVs: 196 HP / 36 Atk / 76 Def / 196 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

This set is based on Mankey's ability to lock Pokemon into setup moves by using Encore. Mankey and Machop are the only two Fighting-types with access to Encore, and Mankey arguably does it better with higher Speed. Many threats that would normally set up on Mankey successfully such as Murkrow and Gligar will be locked into their setup move. Substitute allows Mankey to scout the opponent's move to see if it's Encore-worthy; this is especially helpful to take status moves and lock the foe into them. U-turn is recommended in the third slot as it allows Mankey to scout the opponent's switch when they're locked into a status move. U-turn also lets Mankey do some damage while it switches to a set up (space) sweeper if the foe decides to stay in. However, if you plan to use this set offensively rather than to support your team, use Ice Punch in the third slot. Close Combat and Cross Chop are both powerful Fighting-type moves that Mankey can utilize effectively. Close Combat is the stronger of the two, but it will lower both of Mankey's defenses after use. Because Since this set is supposed to be bulky rather than offensive, Cross Chop is usable too to keep Mankey's defenses at an acceptable level while still boast a high Base Power.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Mankey is EVed to be bulky rather than strong, but if you wish to trade durability for power, you can use an EV spread of 116 HP / 196 Atk / 196 Spe. If you wish want Mankey to take special hits better, you may move the 76 Defense EVs to Special Defense. Anger Point is the preferred ability as Mankey will become extremely powerful if hit by a critical hit behind a Substitute. However, if you wish to use Vital Spirit to allow Mankey to switch into random sleep-inducing moves, it is also an option. Because Since Mankey will often get a the chance to set up a Substitute, Focus Punch can also be used in the last slot for maximum power.

[Team Options]

Any Pokemon who needs Steel-types out of their way pair up well with Mankey. Pokemon that Scraggy can easily set up on such as Frillish make lure it in well for Mankey to come in on and KO (um, what are you trying to say here? "....make lure it in well for Mankey to come in on and KO..." does not make any sense). On the SubEncore set, any set up (space) sweeper will enjoy Mankey's help. Scraggy and Murkrow are good examples as they can easily remove Natu with powerful Dark-types attacks.

[Counters]

Bulky Ghost- and Psychic-types such as Midreavus, Frillish, Solosis, and Natu can all switch into Close Combat and attack KO Mankey. Gligar can also come switch in on any move bar Ice Punch and hit Mankey with STAB Aerial Ace or Earthquake. Natu, as mentioned before, can switch in on the SubEncore set with ease. Murkrow can hit Mankey with Brave Bird or lower its Attack with Feather Dance

[Optional Changes]

Mankey doesn't have much else too many other options to work with. Assurance is an option over Punishment to hit Ghost-types switch-ins that are hit with Stealth Rock will take more damage from it. Mankey has access to Claw Sharpen which can be used to boost its already high Attack and Speed stats. Choice Band is another option on the Choice Scarf set to boost Mankey's Attack, but then it will lose its ability to check Scraggy and Carvanha.

[Dream World]

Mankey's Dream World ability is Competitive Spirit. With Competitive Spirit, Mankey can switch into Pokemon with Intimidate and still have +1 Attack gain an Attack boost. Pokemon that try to lower Mankey's attack such as Murkrow with Feather Dance will also fail to do so as Competitive Spirit will bring it back up instead increase Mankey's Attack.

Shall provide a copy-pastable version later.

you don't need to give me a C/P version, I know how long they take =)
many of those changes were unnecessary, but I made a got amount of them.

edit: okay, after making those changes, this is what I think. about 60% of those changes were literally you just rephrasing something I said that was perfectly fine. Some of those changes were necessary, so thanks for those, but many of them weren't. What's the problem with starting a sentence with because? It's just changing two halves of a sentence that's acceptable by your expectations.
"Peaches are good because they're juicy."
"Because they're juicy, peaches are good."
Same thing >_<

Sorry for the mix-up with Because. In all the cases of because occuring in your analysis, it is part of a dependent clause, so the said sentences are grammatically correct.

The one recurring mistake which I found was the repetition of the word "Mankey" in places where it could have been replaced by "it" or any other appropriate term. An example would be the first sentence:

Mankey is a predictable, yet effective Pokemon. Mankey immediately poses an offensive threat with a good physical movepool and high Attack stat
Clearly, the "Mankey" at the beginning of the second sentence can be removed along with the full stop, and replaced with "that". Unnecessary repetition of the name of the Pokemon in question, "Mankey" in this case, is something that should be avoided. Another example of my own should make this clear:

Cricket is a stick-and-ball game. Cricket is played mainly in England and its colonies.

Once again, the two sentences can be combined using "that".

As for the other changes which you felt were unnecessary, I felt that the prose could have been better, and that is why I made all those changes. A member of the GP team can clarify if those changes were necessary or not.

I wish you good luck with this analysis.

Wow this isn't for taking off an Ice-type move!

Actually this is because Death Gambit is now Final Gambit and Competitive Spirit is now Defiant.

Also your Other Options section and Checks and Counters need to be switched, it's in the wrong order.

Checking things from before I started writing heck yes
