[SET]
name: Wallbreaker
move 1: Iron Head
move 2: Play Rough
move 3: Sucker Punch
move 4: Fire Blast
item: Life Orb
ability: Sheer Force
nature: Naughty
evs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========
- Iron Head is a hard-hitting STAB attack that hits opposing Fairy-types and Ice-types for massive damage
- Play Rough is an equally powerful STAB that breaks Dark- and Fighting-types
- Sucker Punch provides priority and improves Mawile's matchup against offense
- Fire Blast is good for hitting opposing Steel-types and physical walls, but is quite mediocre coming of Mawile's subpar Special Attack stat
Set Details
========
- EVs maximize Mawile's Speed and damage output while actually making Fire Blast usable
- Naughty nature increases Mawile's power at the cost of making it super vulnerable to special attacks
- Sheer Force boosts Mawile's power to incredible levels, making it a force to be reckoned with
- Life Orb again boosts its power at the cost of recoil damage
Usage Tips
========
- Switch Mawile in against special walls such as Audino and defensive Vullaby
- Use the appropriate move to hit the opposing Pokemon the hardest
- If you predict a switch into a physical wall such as Gourgeist-XL, use Fire Blast
- Use Sucker Punch against offensive Pokemon that don't resist it, such as Fraxure
- Make sure not to get worn down too much by Life Orb
Team Options
========
- Late-game cleaners such as Mightyena appreciate having their checks gone so they can sweep
- Healing Wish support from the likes of Mr. Mime can help to mitigate Life Orb recoil and make sure Mawile doesn't go down too early
- Spikes and Stealth Rock support from Pokemon like Crustle helps to cripple opposing walls, making Mawile's job easier
- Pokemon that can take on Fire-types make for great partners, one example being Floatzel
[SET]
name: Defensive
move 1: Stealth Rock
move 2: Play Rough/ Iron Head
move 3: Baton Pass
move 4: Toxic
item: Leftovers
ability: Intimidate
nature: Careful
evs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD
[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========
- Stealth Rock allows Mawile to support its team by crippling common threats
- Iron Head and Play Rough give Mawile actual offensive presence, so it isn't Taunt bait
- Baton Pass lets Mawile pivot into a teammate when things get too rough
- Toxic lets Mawile stall the opponent out, which is easy with its good defensive typing
- If another team member is running Toxic or Toxic Spikes, Mawile can run Taunt to shut down set-up sweepers like Nasty Plot Raichu
Set Details
========
- EVs and a Careful nature patch up Mawile's poor Special Defense, letting it survive one Hydro Pump from Floatzel and get a Toxic off
- Leftovers is used to recover HP over time, which is useful as Mawile lacks reliable recovery
- Intimidate cripples physical attackers such as Machoke, allowing Mawile to stall them out more easily
Usage Tips
========
- Switch this Pokemon in on a physical attacker to take advantage of Intimidate
- Set up Stealth Rock on the first turn, then Toxic if the foe isn't poisoned already
- If running Taunt, use it when facing an opposing wall so they can't heal themselves or inflict status conditions
- From there spam Iron Head or Play Rough to soften up the foe
- If things start going bad for Mawile, bring in a teammate with Baton Pass
Team Options
========
- Toxic Spikes users can be helpful for poisoning foes on switch-in, allowing Mawile to run Taunt over Toxic
- Pokemon with Wish such as Audino can help keep Mawile healthy throughout the match
- Fire-type checks such as defensive Altaria can help as Mawile is terrible against most Fire-types
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
- Foul Play can be used on the Defensive set to punish physical attackers even further, but Mawile struggles to find a move slot for it.
- Magnet Rise can be used to negate Mawile's Ground-type weakness and can be Baton Passed, but it's hard to fit it on a set.
- A set with Swords Dance over Fire Blast and an Adamant nature is also viable, as a +2 Mawile can muscle through just about anything in the tier. However, this set lacks a way to hit opposing Steel-types and often loses to them.
Checks and Counters
===================
**Fire-types**: Defensive Fire-types such as Camerupt completely wall Mawile, while more offensive Fire-types like Ninetales and Rapidash force it out with their STAB attacks.
**Fast Special Attackers**: Fast, specially offensive Pokemon like Raichu and Life Orb Kadabra outspeed Mawile and deal heavy damage to it. However, they should be very careful of Sucker Punch.
**Steel-types**: Steel-types like Probopass wall Mawile's STAB moves, posing a problem to any sets lacking Fire Blast. They also can deal heavy damage to it with their own STAB moves.
