Moves
========
- Hyper Voice is Meloetta's most powerful STAB move that goes through Substitute, making it a powerful asset. Only thing to worry about is Pokemon with Soundproof.
- Psychic is the other STAB move that Meloetta gets in Aria Forme, being able to take out huge threats such as Fighting-types or the ever lovely wall Amooguss.
- Shadow Ball is mainly dedicated to hitting Doublade and Slowking harder than Meloetta's other moves, being able to OHKO the former after Stealth Rock damage. Not to mention it is a strong move to use against other Ghost- or Psychic-type Pokemon, such as Cofgrigus and Jellicent.
- Considering the fact that Meloetta is easy fodder for Spiritomb, not wanting to risk getting Pursuit trapped, running Dazzling Gleam gives Meloetta a chance to OHKO Spiritomb on a switch in, granted Stealth Rocks are up or prior damage has been dealt. However, even Specs Dazzling Gleam only has a 43% chance of OHKOing Spiritomb after Stealth Rock damage. However, if you choose to run Dazzling Gleam over Shadow Ball, Doublade has an opportunity to set up by not fearing an OHKO and potentially sweep, as Psychic only does around 48% damage.
- Having U-turn allows for Meloetta to keep up offensive momentum while getting off chip damage on the opposing Pokemon.
- Focus Blast is to primarily hit things harder than the other moves could, such as Steel-types like Magneton or Registeel.
Set Details
========
- 252 EVs in Special Attack allows for the hardest hitting moves to be dealt.
- With 252 Speed EVs, Meloetta caps at 279, which is nothing to scoff at.
- Since Meloetta requires a 252/252+ Special Attack/Speed EV spread, there is no room for mass investment in the Defenses, leaving it with only 4 EVs put into Defense.
- Timid helps Meloetta hit maximum Speed for it's speed tier, allowing it to outspeed any other base 90 Pokemon that isn't fully invested in Speed.
- Choices Specs are also there to ensure that nothing can switch in on a neutral attack easily.
Usage Tips
========
- Meloetta only works well when obvious checks to it are removed, such as opposing Sharpedos, pursuit trappers, and Knock Off users.
- Meloetta is very easy to play around once it is locked into a move, and should be handled with care in that respect.
- Has great special bulk, but lacks recovery of any form, so take that into consideration before making frivolous switches into Meloetta.
- U-turn is to be utilized if an opponent has a Registeel or Spiritomb still active on their team, allowing you to keep up offensive momentum without having to risk facing either of these Pokemon 1-on-1. If all Dark-types and Slowking are gone, it is safe to use Psychic as a safe play, hitting many things for large damage. Alternatively, if all of the Ghost-types on the opposing team are gone, Hyper Voice is a move better suited to be used.
Team Options
========
- Meloetta works best with a physical attacker that can sponge up Dark-type attacks, especially on the physical side. Gurdurr works best for this, being a nice switch for Meloetta, while being a powerful attacker with the potential to sweep on it's own.
- Again, going back on the fact that Meloetta has no recovery on it's own, having Alomomola as a Wish passer is a great method of ensuring Melottea gets to tear through the opposing team for a longer period of time. (Ugh, cancer fish.)
- Another physical attacker that helps cover typing that Meloetta cannot on it's own is Sharpedo, being able to harm most of the meta with it's dual STAB + Ice Beam. Coupling it with Meloetta maximizes the offensive pressure of the team.
- -insert obligatory hazards setter, such as the newly bumped to RU Omastar, which can set up all three hazards on it's own.
- Meloetta also loves having Dugtrio as a support revenge killer, seeing as Meloetta can substantially weaken an opposing Pokemon, allowing Dugtrio to easily come in, trap it, and KO it. Another purpose behind having Dugtrio is to trap Pokemon that Meloetta dislike having to deal with on it's own, such as Registeel or Drapion, being able to U-turn out to Dugtrio and trap them. This gives Meloetta more leeway along with any other Pokemon that struggles dealing with Registeel, allowing for an easier time.
- Emboar would be the best check to Spiritomb for Meloetta, being a strong physical attacker immune to Will-O-Wisp, as well as resisting Sprititomb's STAB. Not only that, but Emboar is able to help deal with Registeel and Doublade to an extent.
- Having another Pokemon with access to Volt Switch or U-turn helps Meloetta keep up offensive pressure, and a Pokemon that hits hard is Rotom-Mow or Braviary, respectively. Rotom-Mow can either Volt Switch out on an opposing Pokemon or proceed to hit a Rock- or Ground-type Pokemon hard with Leaf Storm, while Braviary can slightly weaken such Pokemon, namely Rhydon, to the point where Meloetta can do huge damage with Psychic.
- Seeing as Meloetta is barely able to put a dent in Registeel without Focus Blast, having assistance from Virizion and Cobalion is something that is greatly encouraged. They are both able to set up on it, providing they either carry a Lum Berry or Substitute, or the Registeel doesn't have Thunder Wave. These two Pokemon also assist in taking out Sharpedo, not fearing it much, barring an Ice Beam against Virizion. Asides from that, both of these Pokemon can sponge any Knock Off, receiving an Attack boost in the process.
- Another Fighting-type Pokemon that can sponge Dark-type moves, bar Knock Off, would be Gurdurr. It helps alleviate pressure from Meloetta as a safe switch in to Dark-type moves, while having a respectable offensive pressure on its own.
