Status: Done

Overview:

-Meraruba has good attack and decent speed
-It has a good boosting move in Nitro Charge
-With powerful moves like Flare Blitz and Wild Bolt, Meraruba is very threatening
-Its main weakness is its 4x weakness to Rock- type moves, especially Stealth Rock

[SET]
name: Nitro Charge
move 1: Nitro Charge
move 2: Flare Blitz
move 3: Wild Bolt
move 4: Bug Bite / Hidden Power Grass
item: Life Orb / Berry Juice
nature: Jolly / Naive
evs: 76 HP / 236 Atk / 196 Spe

Set Comments:

-Difficult to wall due to very strong attacks
-Reaches 18 Attack and 24 Speed after a Nitro Charge
-Nitro Charge is an excellent set-up move, having decent power while gaining a +1 boost to speed
-Flare Blitz is Meraruba’s strongest STAB attack and OHKOes almost everything that doesn’t resist it
-Wild Bolt hits Water-types that resist Flare Blitz hard
-Bug Bite is a good backup STAB, being able to eat berries

Additional Comments:

-Life Orb gives Meraruba a huge boost to its offenses
-Berry Juice gives Meraruba an easier set-up and can deal with its Stealth Rock weakness once
-Hidden Power Grass hits Rock/Grounds who otherwise wall Meraruba
EVs give max Attack and Speed

[SET]
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: U-turn
move 2: Flare Blitz
move 3: Wild Bolt
move 4: Bug Bite
item: Choice Scarf
nature: Jolly
evs: 76 HP / 236 Atk / 196 Spe

Set Comments:

-Powerful Scarfer
-Reaches 18 Attack and 24 Speed without boosting
-U-turn is a great scouting move that also packs quite a punch with STAB
-Flare Blitz hits Scyther, Tangela, and other Pokemon for OHKOs- it also is Meraruba’s strongest move
-Wild Bolt hits Water-types that resist Flare Blitz hard
-Bug Bite is a good backup STAB, being able to eat berries

Additional Comments:

-Zen Headbutt can hit Poison- and Fighting- types for super effective damage without suffering Flare Blitz’s recoil
-Hidden Power Grass can hit Rock/Grounds who otherwise wall Meraruba
-EVs give max Attack and Speed
-Jolly is used over Adamant as the output from 18 and 19 Attack is almost identical

Team Options:
-Entry hazard support is helpful to assist Meraruba in its sweep
-A Rapid Spin, Defog, or Taunt user is helpful to remove or prevent entry hazards (especially Stealth Rock)
-Wynaut helps Meraruba set up
-Removal of Flash Fire Pokemon like Houndour is helpful
-Removal of Dragon-type Pokemon is helpful

Optional Changes:

-Morning Sun can deal with Stealth Rock and recoil to an extent
-A Calm Mind set is viable with access to Bug Buzz, Fire Blast, and Psychic
-Meraruba gets Will-o-wisp and Light Screen, meaning it can function as a bulky staller to an extent
-Flame Wheel can be used over Flare Blitz to avoid recoil but is very weak

Counters:

-Stealth Rock is the best counter to Meraruba, taking a huge chunk out of its HP
-Priority users, especially Aqua Jet users, can prey on Meraruba’s weaknesses to take it out
-Faster Scarfers such as Scarf Staryu can hit Meraruba super effectively but have trouble switching in

Dream World:

-Swarm has little value on Meraruba- it might provide a situational boost but that’s it. Better to stick with Flame Body and get the occasional burn
