UU Mienshao

QC Checks: Bouff / GrilledClawitzer / dodmen
GP Checks: Fireflame479
[OVERVIEW]

* Mienshao has a solid offensive typing and great offensive moves in High Jump Kick and U-turn.
* It has a niche over other Fighting-types, having utility and coverage moves unlike Keldeo and Knock Off unlike Infernape.
* Mienshao is really frail, so it almost never finds direct opportunities to switch in.
* It's still outsped by common Choice Scarf users, such as Keldeo and Terrakion, and it is weak against priority.

[SET]
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: High Jump Kick
move 2: U-turn
move 3: Stone Edge / Poison Jab
move 4: Knock Off
item: Choice Scarf
ability: Reckless
nature: Jolly
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

* High Jump Kick is Mienshao's most powerful STAB move thanks to the Reckless boost, allowing it to get KOs on tier staples such as Mega Aerodactyl and Cobalion, but its drawback puts Mienshao in danger, as Mienshao loses 50% of its health if High Jump Kick misses.
* U-turn is a good way to pivot around Mienshao's checks while doing a good amount of damage against frailer Pokemon.
* Stone Edge is a strong coverage move that 2HKOes Mantine and Crobat.
* Knock Off is a safe attack to play around most of the Ghost-types, such as Gengar and Froslass, and it removes the items of Mienshao common answers.
* Poison Jab can be used instead Stone Edge to hit Primarina and Clefable harder.

Set Details
========

* Maximum Speed investment with a Choice Scarf and a Jolly nature allows Mienshao to outspeed the entire unboosted tier and several slower Choice Scarf users and setup sweepers such as Hydreigon and Haxorus.
* Maximum Attack investment is used to hit as hard as possible.
* Reckless boosts High Jump Kick's Base Power to 156, ensuring that it has a high chance to OHKO threats such as Haxorus and Mega Aerodactyl after Stealth Rock.

Usage Tips
========

* Mienshao is really frail, which means the safest way to find opportunities is via U-turn, Volt Switch, or logical double switching.
* Be careful of using High Jump Kick if your opponent has a Ghost-type.
* Mienshao can often act as a solid lead, as it can threaten many Pokemon the opponent could lead with and use U-turn to gain momentum as they go into their dedicated checks.
* Mienshao is best used as a revenge killer, as it outspeeds the entire unboosted tier with Choice Scarf, so don't sacrifice it if your opponent has a huge setup wincon.
* It can act as a cleaner mid- or late-game, as it matches up well against offense.

Team Options
========

* Mienshao appreciates entry hazard support, especially Spikes support coming from Klefki or Roserade, as its switch-ins will be even more limited.
* Steel-types such as Scizor and Cobalion can help Mienshao defeat Fairy-types, such as Togekiss and Clefable.
* Pursuit trappers such as Choice Scarf Krookodile and Mega Aerodactyl can defeat Psychic-types to help Mienshao.
* Poison-types such as Amoonguss and Nidoking can help Mienshao remove Fairy-types from the field, while Mienshao helps them against Steel-types.
* Psychic- and Ground-types such as Latias and Krookodile threaten Poison-types such as Amoonguss and Tentacruel, which are solid Mienshao checks that resist most of its moves.
* Fighting-types are solid teammates too, as they overwhelm most of Mienshao's checks.
* VoltTurn support from the likes of Raikou and Hydreigon helps Mienshao a lot, as it gives Mienshao opportunities to switch in while also forming a great VoltTurn core.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

* Choice Band is a solid option, as Mienshao becomes a wallbreaker that 2HKOes the whole tier, but the lack of Speed is suboptimal for a frail Pokemon like Mienshao.
* A Life Orb set with Regenerator can be used as well, but the lack of Speed is, again, suboptimal for Mienshao, and the set is really easy to revenge kill, as your opponent will notice Mienshao doesn't have Choice Scarf.
* A set featuring Swords Dance and Life Orb may work against bulkier teams, but Mienshao lacks setup opportunities, and this set can't pivot with U-turn.

Checks and Counters
===================
**Ghost-types**: Ghost-types such as Gengar and Doublade can threaten Mienshao thanks to their immunity to High Jump Kick, and Mienshao can't revenge kill threats such as Haxorus if Ghost-types are still healthy on the opposing team.

**Revenge Killers**: Common revenge killers such as Choice Scarf Keldeo, Choice Scarf Gengar, and Choice Scarf Latias can OHKO Mienshao with their STAB moves, but they can't switch into High Hump Kick or Knock Off reliably.

**Fairy-types**: Fairy-types such as Clefable and Primarina can easily tank High Jump Kick and OHKO Mienshao with their powerful STAB attacks, but they have to look out for Poison Jab.

**Flying-types**: Flying-types such as Togekiss and Crobat can take High Jump Kick from Mienshao fairly easily, but they fear Stone Edge and can be pivoted around with U-turn.

**Poison-types**: Poison-types such as Amoonguss and Nidoqueen can take any attack unleashed by Mienshao well, but Mienshao can use U-turn to gain momentum against them.

in overview, you should talk about how it sets itself apart from other scarfers due to access to uturn and knock, which stuff like nape and keldeo lack

in moves you should mention that knock off also gets rid of the items of its common answers

* Avoid clicking High Jump Kick as much as possible if your opponent has a Fighting resist, as those will just steal your momentum
* Pokémon that carry Thunder Wave must be avoided, as they will eventually cut Mienshao's Speed in half.

these two sentences are unnecessary imo, id probably remove them

you dont need to mention that hazard support is necessary on every team since thats a little obvious, i would remove that bit. be a bit more specific in the last part as well and say that spikes make it easier to pressure its switchins, something along those lines.

idt the fighting spam thing really works either, none of them beat down what mien has trouble with aside from like np luke which isnt great rn

be more specific about the voltturn stuff, raikou and hydreigon are pretty good partners for example

similarly you should be more specific in the poison type section as well

add physical walls to c&c, stuff like gliscor slowbro etc take on mien pretty well

add that clefable and primarina dont like switching in on poison jab

e: nape doesnt lack uturn im retarded, but it still doesnt get knock

I'll implement this tomorrow, I gotta sleep right now.

Okay, you asked me to QC so I will!

The part about Mienshao's access to utility moves at the start sounds weird, as it sounds like either Keldeo is weak or Infernape does not have access to coverage and utility moves, neither of which is true. Maybe mention that it has a niche over its competition as it has access to coverage options and utility moves unlike Keldeo, and its STAB is strong unlike Infernape.

For the EV spread, it should go in the order it is shown on Pokemonshowdown; as such, please list it as 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

Mention the drawbacks to High Jump Kick in moves. It should also be "pivot around Mienshao's checks". Don't say "however" in the Poison Jab part as it doesn't come right after Stone Edge in your move order, and sounds weird. Just remove the word.

It is kind of redundant to mention that Choice Scarf lets Mienshao outspeed the entire unboosted tier, and then mention it again right afterwards when explaining the use of max speed. Instead, try something like:

* Maximum Speed investment with a Choice Scarf and a Jolly nature allows Mienshao to outspeed the entire unboosted tier, and several slower scarfers or setup users such as Hydreigon and Haxorus.
*Meanwhile, maximum attack investment is used to hit as hard as possible.

Mienshao does not really "find setup opportunities", as it does not run any setup moves. Instead, just saying opportunities is fine. Make it clear that Mienshao should be careful of clicking High Jump Kick so long the opponent has a Ghost-type on his team. Mention how it threatens many common leads so often makes a good choice for one, and can U-turn to gain momentum. Separate the point about it being a revenge killer and a cleaner; they are both different roles it can play in a battle, and should as such be mentioned separately.

Mention Froslass under spikers. Also, Alakazam is hardly a Mienshao check:

252 Atk Reckless Mienshao High Jump Kick vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Alakazam: 230-271 (91.6 - 107.9%) -- 50% chance to OHKO

If you want to keep it in, specifically mention that it is Sash Alakazam that checks Mienshao. Poison-types also make for good partners of Mienshao as they threaten Fairy-types, so they should be mentioned.

Just make a point for Fighting-resists, not Physical Walls. Even if it is only a 2% chance, there is a chance to 2HKO Crocune after Stealth Rock, so with just a little chip damage, it is hardly an answer. One of Mienshao's best quality is that it can tear teams apart unless they have a sturdy Fighting-resist such as Crobat, Gliscor or Slowbro.

I would not say that Ghost-types are not the biggest issue; even if in an ideal setting, they can be taken care of, imagine the following situation: Mienshao is in front of a +1 Haxorus. Said Haxorus is in range of High Jump Kick, but not of any of your other moves. Your options are now

a) to High Jump Kick, and risk them switching into their Ghost-type; this forces you to take recoil damage and switch out
b) to Knock Off, and potentially lose to Haxorus as your revenge-killer died on a prediction gone wrong

Ghost-types are far and away Mienshao's biggest problem, as they scare it from clicking its so-important STAB. As such, I would like to see them mentioned as top threats, even if Mienshao can technically also dent them.

Ask me to look this over again once you have implemented everything.

Nah no need for Fightinium Z, LO Reckless HJK actually hits harder than All Out Pummeling so you're better off using that and using your Z move somewhere else. SD is still viable for OO though.

Add a section for flying types in checks & counters: Togekiss, Mantine, and Crobat can tank HJK and other attacks easily, though they don't like switching into rocks + U-turn or Stone Edge. Gliscor can deal with Mienshao no matter what as long as it doesn't switch into Knock Off before Toxic Orb is activated.

Implemented, thank you. also:

I meant switch-in opportunities, lmao

When I said that Mienshao makes for a good lead, I did not mean that it does very well against common Hyper Offense leads (even though it can U-turn to break their Sashes, at least). Not many teams even run dedicated leads, as Hyper Offense is just one of many playstyles. What I meant was moreso the fact that Mienshao ithreatens many different Pokemon in the tier, and can make for a good lead in many match-ups as it either threatens whatever the opponent leads with and gains momentum with U-turn, or the opponent leads with a dedicated answer to Mienshao, in which case it can oftentimes still U-turn in an attempt to grab momentum. Please change that part in usage tips to reflect this more closely, then this gets qc 2/3.
