Misdreavus (BW2 Revamp) [QC 3/3] [GP 2/2]

[pimg]200[/pimg]
Way better than Dusknoir plus cuter

Misdreavus might seem like an odd choice when there's stiff competition from the premier spinblockers, Rotom and Spiritomb. Rotom generally does a better job spinblocking Kabutops and Spiritomb does a better job spinblocking Cryogonal, but Misdreavus acts as an in-between switch-in for both Rapid Spin users. Unfortunately, Misdreavus loses to both Rapid Spin users one-on-one and should only be used as a pivot switch. On the other hand, Misdreavus's NFE status it can make good use of Eviolite to boost its mediocre defenses. Misdreavus is generally seen on stall teams that need a spinblocker and a cleric. Thankfully, Misdreavus has a handful of support moves, for example Heal Bell, Will-O-Wisp, and Thunder Wave. Despite these positive characteristics, Misdreavus relies heavily on Eviolite and a simple Trick or Knock Off severely cripples Misdreavus. Misdreavus also has no reliable recovery, leaving it to rely heavily on Wish passing. Misdreavus is still a viable spin blocker to use, but it mustn't switch too much, as it can be worn down quickly.

[SET]
name: Support
move 1: Will-O-Wisp
move 2: Pain Split
move 3: Shadow Ball
move 4: Heal Bell / Taunt / Perish Song
item: Eviolite
nature: Bold
evs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Misdreavus is an excellent choice for a support Pokemon due to its decent defenses and wonderful support moves. Will-O-Wisp is an incredibly helpful move, as it weakens physical attackers such as Hitmonlee, Druddigon, and Kabutops. Pain Split allows Misdreavus to regain some health; it is especially useful against high HP Pokemon such as Slowking, Alomomola, and Tangrowth. Shadow Ball is Misdreavus's strongest STAB move, and deals respectable damage to Psychic- and Ghost-types. Heal Bell is the recommended last move because it greatly supports your team from ever-so-common status. Misdreavus also has base 85 Speed, which is quite fast for a support Pokemon, so it can Taunt other walls before they status it. However, if your team has trouble forcing out bulky Pokemon such as Cosmic Power Sigilyph, Alomomola, and Walrein, Perish Song is the optimal choice.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Misdreavus still has other supporting moves, including Toxic, Thunder Wave, and Confuse Ray, which are all viable, and you may opt to use any of the moves if they support your team better than the ones listed above. Foul Play can be used in place of Shadow Ball because it does a considerable amount of damage to physical attackers such as Cincinno, Entei, and Zangoose. As Misdreavus gets worn down quickly, a RestTalk set could be used to have a better form of recovery. If you want to increase Misdreavus's Speed, 100 Speed EVs can be used to outspeed max base 55s such as Crawdaunt and Omastar and other Pokemon that aim for the same benchmark. Another alternative spread of 252 HP / 132 Def / 124 Spe with a Timid nature can be used to outspeed Adamant Kabutops and burn it while avoiding an OHKO from a +2 Stone Edge.

A Wish passer is recommended because Misdreavus doesn't have reliable recovery, so Alomomola and Clefable make good teammates. Misdreavus is perfectly capable of acting as a spinblocker, so Crustle and Ferroseed pair up nicely, spreading entry hazards. Regarding hazards, Misdreavus must be wary of multiple switch-ins since the premier spinners, Kabutops and Cryogonal, can wear it down. Bulky Steel- and Dark-types such as Steelix, Mandibuzz, and Ferroseed are good partners, as their typing allow them to combat Ghost- and Dark-type moves that threaten Misdreavus, while Misdreavus switches in on the Fighting-type moves aimed at them

[Other Options]

Misdreavus has plenty of other tricks up its sleeves, but alternative sets are either outclassed by another Pokemon or just bad. A Calm Mind set could be used, but due to a lack of reliable recovery, Misdreavus finds it hard to stay alive while boosting. The Perish Song trapper from GSC has a slight niche of trapping walls, but because Misdreavus has to stay in for Perish Song's countdown plus spend an extra two turns using Mean Look and Perish Song, it can have difficulty trapping even one Pokemon. Torment is an interesting move because you can force Choice-locked Pokemon to use Struggle, but ideally it's better to use if you're trying to Perish trap. A more offensive approach with Nasty Plot can be used, but with only base 85 Speed and Special Attack, Misdreavus is outsped by many Pokemon such as Archeops and Entei, while bulkier Pokemon such as Emboar, Escavalier, and Druddigon can live a hit and retaliate with their STAB moves. Memento seems appealing because it sacrifices Misdreavus to allow another teammate to set up, but it wastes Misdreavus's walling capability. Misdreavus also has access to Sunny Day, Rain Dance, and Trick Room, but it's generally outclassed by other Pokemon such as Volbeat and Slowking as a field effect setter.

[Checks and Counters]

Misdreavus is not a difficult Pokemon to check. Bulky Fire-types such as Emboar and Entei are immune to Will-O-Wisp, take little damage from Shadow Ball and can strike back with a strong Flare Blitz. Guts users such as Swellow and Hairyama can absorb Will-O-Wisps; the former is immune to Shadow Ball while the latter takes little damage from it. Powerful Dark- and Ghost-types such as Absol, Crawdaunt, and Rotom can hit Misdreavus with their STABs, but the former two must be wary of Will-O-Wisp and the latter must watch out for Shadow Ball. Strong special attackers including Typhlosion, Sceptile, Moltres, and Magmortar can take advantage of Misdreavus's uninvested Special Defense. Defensive Pokemon with recovery such as Poliwrath, RestTalk Lanturn, Amoongus, and Cryogonal can stall out any Misdreavus that doesn't carry Perish Song or Taunt. Finally, Trick and Knock Off severely cripple Misdreavus, making it much easier to take down.

Overview

 • Decent defences with Eviolite and has base 85 speed out speeding most walls in the RU tier.
 • Can play either offensive or defensive roles
 • Relies heavily on Eviolite, if tricked away or knocked off Misdreavus is a lot easier to deal with
 • Lack luster HP while its best recovery is Pain Split, making Misdreavus rely on wish passing.
 • Faces competition from Rotom and Spiritomb for being a spin blocker and Ghost-type in general.

move 2: Pain Split
move 3: Shadow Ball
move 4: Heal Bell / Taunt / Perish Song

[SET COMMENTS]
 • Overall bulk 324 / 360 / 309
 • Will-O-Wisp is an excellent move choice for Misdreavus as it makes its job easier to deal with physical attackers including Druddigon, Gallade, and Durant
 • Pain Split allows it to gain some health back. Useful on Pokemon with high HP such as Slowking, Munchlax and Tangrowth
 • Shadow Ball Misdreavus strongest STAB.
 • Taunt to stop set up sweepers and other walls statusing Misdreavus.
 • Heal Bell is great supporter move to heal your team's status
 • Perish Song to force out bulky sweepers like CM Sigilyph, Clefable, and Spiritomb

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
 • Other supporting moves like Toxic, Thunderwave, Confuse Ray, and Torment
 • 100 Speed to out speed max base 55 such as Crawduant, Omastar and SD Gator and then burn or Taunt them.

 • Alomomola or Clefable to pass those big wishes
 • Misdreavus is a good spin blocker so Crustle and Ferroseed pair up nicely spreading hazards. Though, it must be wary of multiple switch-ins as the premier rapid spinners, Cryogonal and Kabutops can wear it down.
 • Bulky Steel- or Dark-types to take on Ghost- and Dark-type moves. Steelix, Mandibuzz, and Ferroseed pair up nicely with Misdreavus.

[Other Options]
 • CM set
 • Perish Trapper
 • All out attacker with 252 SpA / 252 Spe / 4 Def move set consisting of Shadow Ball / Hidden Power Fighting / Thunderbolt / Psychic or Destiny Bond
 • NP set
 • Memento
 • Torment
 • Access to Sunny Day, Rain Dance and Trick Room but better off to Pokemon like Volbeat and Slowking.

[Checks and Counters]
 • Bulky Fire-types likes Emboar and Entei are immune from Will-O-Wisp and take little damage from Shadow Ball they can retaliate back with a strong Flare Blitz.
 • Guts abusers like Swellow and Hairyama can take wisps and take little damage from Shadow Ball.
 • Powerful Dark- and Ghost-types like Crawduant, Absol, and Rotom can hit Misdreavus pretty hard but the former two must be wary of Will-O-Wisp.
 • Strong special attackers can take advantage of Misdreavus's univested Special Defence for example Typhlosion, Sceptile and Rotom-C
 • Trick or Knock off removes Misdreavus's Eviolite making it easier to take down

On the first set, make Heal Bell the primary slash over Taunt in the last slot, and move Thunder Wave to AC. Heal Bell is a major part of Misdreavus's niche, as it can provide cleric support while spinblocking. Mandibuzz is arguably a better stallbreaker because it has reliable recovery to go along with Taunt + Toxic. Also, mention in AC an alternate EV spread of 252 HP / 132 Def / 124 Spe Timid to outspeed Adamant Kabutops, which you can burn with Will-O-Wisp to avoid being OHKOed at +2.

I don't have any experience with Calm Mind, so I'll test that out and get back to you. Sorry you had to wait so long.

On the third slot, Perish Song over Thunder Wave imo

Perish Song is a great move on teams where Misdreavus fits very well mainly teams defensives which are damn weak to beat some last mons such CM Clefable / CM Sigy / CM Spiritomb / other stuff.

Add Torment on OO.

EDIT: Looking at this a bit more i'd like to suggest some changes before fully approving this

Although Misdreavus is a decent spinblocker, it still struggles with both Kabutops and Cryogonal, arguably the best spinners in the tier overall, so saying that it beats most of the spinners in RU is a best of a stretch, its role as a spinblocker should still be stressed, but just be sure to mention that having a Misdreavus doesnt automatically make you impervious to being spun on by these Pokemon.

Also, i'm not entirely convinced that Calm Mind deserves a full set, while it looks pretty good on paper i could see it getting worn down very quickly from repeatedly switching into Stealth Rock and using Substitute to get Stealth Rock opportunities due to its lack of any form of recovery, not even Leftovers, limiting its potential. Does anyone else have any experience with Calm Mind Misdreavus? and/or logs of it being effective/ineffective?

After these changes are made and we determine the viability of Calm Mind Misdreavus you can consider this

QC Approved 2/3

Talked with Molk over IRC and agree with the changes. I would separate the Calm Mind set from the analysis and write the rest up, make a new thread if you want. I'm seriously doubting its viability since it has absolutely no recovery and has no way of getting past physical attackers such as Spiritomb and Escavalier.

The reason I'd use Misdreavus over Rotom or Spiritomb is on stall when you need Heal Bell and a spinblocker. Rotom is the best way to spinblock Kabutops, Spiritomb is the best way to spinblock Cryogonal, but Misdreavus is kind of an in-between in that it doesn't really flat out lose to either (except Kabutops at +2 but you shouldn't risk Misdreavus with a +2 Kabutops) but doesn't really beat either.

In addition, Misdreavus can play an offensive role as it is blessed with boosting moves such as Calm Mind and Nasty Plot.
Remove this, if it's not a main set there's no reason to mention it.

Will-O-Wisp is incredibly helpful move, as it weakens physical attackers such as Gallade, Druddigon, and Kabutops.
Don't use Gallade as an example, as a lot of them carry Lum Berry.

Munchlax is irrelevant. Use a different example.

Shadow Ball is Misdreavus strongest attack, as it deals decent damage to Psychic- and Ghost-types.
Say "Shadow Ball is Misdreavus's strongest STAB move".

set comments said:
Taunt shut downs the common set up sweepers such as Gallade, Omastar, and Kabutops.
Remove this, Misdreavus is actually slower than all of these Pokemon because they invest in Speed.

set comments said:
Perish Song reliably forces out bulky sweepers such as Sigilyph, Clefable, and Spiritomb.
I would change this to mention "bulky mons that never die" (obviously don't use this wording for the analysis though). CP Sigilyph is a decent example, but also mention Walrein and Alomomola.

ac 1st para said:
Misdreavus still has other supporting moves such as Toxic, Thunderwave, Confuse Ray which are all viable, so choose which supports your team better.
Don't say "choose whichever one supports your team better", as that's not what AC is for. Say something like "you can use one of these if it supports your team better than any of the moves listed above".

ac 1st para said:
100 Speed can be used to outspeed max base 55 such as Crawdaunt and Omastar while out speeding Sword Dance Feraligator.
Change "while outspeeding SD Gatr" to "while also getting the jump on Pokemon that aim for the same benchmark".

Lum Absol sees some use, but also mention that Rotom dislikes Shadow Ball.

You already mentioned Rotom, no need to do so again. Also, as just general comments on Checks and Counters, mention Moltres and Magmortar, and mention that without Taunt or Perish Song a lot of defensive Pokemon with recovery can stall Misdreavus out, like Poliwrath, Alomomola, RestTalk Lanturn, Cryogonal, etc.

However, before this is ready for GP, make sure you read this over yourself and make some grammar edits. There were a bunch of basic spelling errors (among other things) and it'll be helpful if you lessen the amount of work that GP has to do, because as it is a good portion of the analysis will have to be edited for grammar.

a while ago on irc dc and i agreed that foul play should be mentioned in ac for the defensive set, it discourages stuff like cb entei from coming in (taking 50ish percent) and means lum tops can set up in front of you which is nice

looks good

Ok implemented all of the changes mentioned while trying to fix any basic errors. I have one question though about this sentence before going to GP
Misdreavus is generally seen on stall teams that needs a spinblocker and a cleric while it can act as an in-between switch-in to the premier spinners, Kabutops and Cryogonal
Do I need to mention how Rotom spinblocks tops better and tomb spinbocks Cryogonal better plus how Misdreavus can't exactly beat them as well.

Mention what the other spinblockers can do in terms of competition with Misdreavus, and that while Misdreavus can prevent both Cryogonal and Kabutops from spinning it will be KOed before they are if you leave it in.
