[OVERVIEW]

Moltres is a fearsome bird with high offensive prowess. Its high-powered STAB moves are backed by a great base 125 Special Attack. It has enough Speed to outpace most defensive Pokemon, while its bulk and typing give it the opportunity to take a few hits. This typing also gives it a 4x weakness to Stealth Rock, though, meaning Moltres needs much more support than most offensive threats. However, this support can pay off; Moltres is one of the hardest Pokemon to switch into. Access to Roost also means that even Stealth Rock cannot completely neutralize Moltres.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Fire Blast and Hurricane are both high-Base Power STAB moves. Flamethrower can be used over Fire Blast for 100% accuracy, but the drop in power is very apparent. The two STAB moves have very good coverage together, with Hurricane hitting the bulky Water-types that resist Fire Blast. Hidden Power Grass hits Rock-types that resist Moltres's STAB moves, such as Rhyperior, as well as letting Moltres hit Swampert without having to rely on Hurricane's 70% accuracy. Roost allows Moltres to heal off any damage it has taken and allows Moltres to switch in more than once if Stealth Rock is up.

Set Details
========

Maximum Speed and Special Attack EVs are used; although Moltres has decent bulk, no amount of investment will help it take non-resisted hits very well. It sits at an important Speed tier where it is prudent to fully invest in Speed. Timid is preferred to outspeed Mamoswine, Heracross, and Chandelure, whereas Modest gives it more power. Life Orb is used to maximize damage while allowing Moltres to switch moves.

Usage Tips
========

Moltres should be able to come in on weak or resisted moves. However, be wary of common coverage moves that hit Moltres super effectively, such as Stone Edge and Thunderbolt.

Team Options
========

With a 4x weakness to Stealth Rock, Moltres requires the support of a Rapid Spin or Defog user such as Mega Blastoise or Empoleon. Late-game sweepers such as Sharpedo appreciate Moltres's wallbreaking. Moltres needs a teammate that can absorb Stone Edges and Rock Slides, such as Swampert. Strong Fighting-types such as Heracross and Machamp can remove Blissey, Porygon2, and Snorlax. These Fighting-types appreciate Moltres's ability to handle Fairy-type Pokemon.

Pokemon that can set up Spikes also make for great teammates, as several of Moltres's counters, such as Snorlax, Porygon2, and Mega Ampharos, are vulnerable to them. Chesnaught and Roserade in particular are well-suited for this role, as they can set up on the Water-types that trouble Moltres. Chesnaught also offers a Rock-type resistance and can easily set up on or check other Pokemon that trouble Moltres, such as Blissey, Snorlax, Mega Sharpedo, Krookodile, and Tyrantrum.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=========

Choice Scarf and Choice Specs may seem appealing to use on Moltres. However, these items lock Moltres in to one move, giving up its good coverage and making it setup fodder. Will-O-Wisp can be used to cripple an Aerodactyl that is switching in. Moltres can make use of Pressure on a Substitute + Toxic set, but it gives up its offensive presence in doing so.

Checks and Counters
===============

**Stealth Rock**: Moltres loses half of its health every time it switches into Stealth Rock. Keeping Stealth Rock up can severely limit Moltres.

**Mega Aerodactyl**: Mega Aerodactyl resists both of Moltres's STAB moves and takes neutral damage from Hidden Power Grass. It can force Moltres out with the threat of Stone Edge and can Roost off any damage it takes.

**Specially Bulky Pokemon**: Pokemon such as Snorlax, Goodra, Blissey, and Porygon2 can switch into all of Moltres's attacks and cripple it with Thunder Wave, Toxic, or super effective moves.

**Electric-types**: Most Electric-types, including Mega Ampharos, Rotom-H, and Heliolisk, either resist both of Moltres's STAB moves or are able to outspeed and OHKO it.

Mention how assault vest goodra and blissey completely wall moltres and can either ko it or toxic stall it. Also mention how Porygon2 is also an issue, as it can 2HKO moltres with thunderbolt and avoid the 2HKO from fire blast. Remove hippowdon from team options, it's banned from uu.

For Team Options, CB Heracross / Machamp should probably be included, as they both remove bulky mons that can switch into Moltres without much trouble (Snorlax, Blissey, SpDef P2, etc.), and they also like stuff such as Florges and Aroma that can usually switch into both of them threatened out.

Other than that, this is good! QC 1/3

I think you could mention Will-O-Wisp in OO, since you hit Mega Aero on the switchin, which does come in handy.

Blissey in C&C, Aero also deserves its own mention since it's like the only offensive mon who can safely switch into Moltres. Oh and Air Slash deserves a mention as a more reliable option than Hurricane even though it's much weaker. Otherwise looks good! QC 2/3

i deleted the previous posts since Sam said he was still working on this o_o

Mention Tailwind in OO as a side note, i recently acquired psychotic syndrome and tried it out and it's actually a pretty cool support move. ;o

Ok I'm going to contribute since I was trying to steal it lol (plus trying to do more so I can potentially get on QC team with all mah frens <3). But I say remove the mention of Hippo in Team Options (obv.) and replace it with Cobalion who has suprisingly decent offensive synergy with Moltres and can take Rock moves fairly well while having decent defensive synergy with Moltres as well (bar Water-type attacks Scald). Also Timid may be better now that Mamoswine is in the tier since...

252 Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Icicle Crash vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Moltres: 199-234 (61.9 - 72.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

Other than this though, it looks really solid. QC 3/3 imo

Timid slashed before Modest to guarantee out speeding Mamoswine, Heracross, Feraligatr, Chandelure, Rotoms.

Add Snorlax to the Blissey/P2 section of C&C, Mega Ampharos is also a check/counter

Well not QC but here goes some thoughts. I'd add Electric-types in C&C since all the Electric-types either resist both of Moltres's STAB attacks or naturally outspeed and can hit it with a super effective STAB attack. With the addition of Snorlax you could probably change the description to "Specially bulky Normal-types" or something along those lines, pretty subjective though. I would provide examples of the Fighting-types in Team Options. Considering Moltres isn't the fastest and has a Stealth Rock weakness, Revenge Killers should probably get a section in C&C. I would mention not switching Moltres in on repeated Stealth Rocks in Usage Tips, and that removing them should be prioritized should they already be set on field.

  • Agree with Timid before Modest.
  • I think Blissey and P2 should be included under a general section called "Specially Bulky Pokemon" with others like Snorlax, Umbreon, Goodra, and Slowking that are at max 3HKOed by Moltres so they can switch in and attack/wall/cripple it.
  • Electric-types should have their own section in C&C for Kreme's reasons, special mention for Mega Amph and Rotom-H as they resist all of Moltres's attacks.
  • Don't think revenge killers are necessary in C&C but include them if you want.
  • Agree with the usage tips and examples of Fighting-types Kreme mentioned.
Get on it Sam n_n

Many of Moltres' checks are vulnerable to Spikes, such as Snorlax, Porygon2, AV Goodra, and Mega Ampharos. Therefore, I would mention Chesnaught as a teammate, as not only does it set down Spikes, but it can also check a number of faster Pokemon that could otherwise be troublesome for Moltres, such as Mienshao, Mega Sharpedo, and Krookodile.

Moving this along, implemented the first GP check. Also added a mention of Spikes users as teammates, thanks Alfalfa.
