[OVERVIEW]
**Dark:**
Tyranitar forges its place on most Dark teams due to not only the defensive backbone it provides but also its offensive presence, allowing it to put pressure on the opponent's team. Tyranitar's defensive capabilities lie in its capacity to sponge special attacks thanks to its great special bulk and its ability Sand Stream giving it a Special Defense boost. It is also one of the most reliable Stealth Rock setters for Dark teams. Tyranitar also has great moves such as Thunder Wave, Fire Blast, and Stone Edge, helping it accomplish its role. Its secondary type in Rock brings Dark teams a key resistance to Fire-types, though it also opens up holes against Fighting-types, as it cannot withstand a STAB attack from them, and also makes it suffer weaknesses to a lot of types, notably Water and Ground. In addition, Tyranitar is cursed with a lack of reliable recovery, hindering its defensive capabilities. Despite its weaknesses, though, Tyranitar is one of the best options that Dark teams have, as it can check a plethora of specially offensive Pokemon that threaten Dark such as Volcarona and Gardevoir while also pressuring common Defog users like Zapdos and Skarmory.
Mega Tyranitar can be utilized not only for defensive purposes but also for offensive purposes thanks to Dragon Dance. It is blessed with more bulk, allowing it to find more opportunities to set up. It also brings more offense to the table to 2HKO a lot of defensive threats such as Skarmory and Porygon2, although it is still crippled by its mediocre Speed compared to other offensive Pokemon.

Moves
========
Tyranitar is the most reliable setter of Stealth Rock for Dark teams. Stealth Rock is one of the best entry hazards in Monotype, as it deals lots of damage to types such as Flying and, more importantly for Dark teams, Bug. Thunder Wave cripples the opponent's Pokemon; it's great combined with Tyranitar's special bulk, crippling specially offensive Pokemon such as Keldeo on the switch in and Kingdra. Stone Edge allows Dark teams to wear down not only Bug-types but also other important threats to Dark teams such as Volcarona and Mega Charizard Y. Rock Slide is an alternative option, as it nails the OHKO against the same threats with greater accuracy, but the difference of power is noticeable against bulkier Pokemon. Fire Blast helps Tyranitar take on annoying Steel-types such as Skarmory, Scizor, and Ferrothorn. Pursuit can also be used to trap Pokemon such as Victini and Gardevoir that would rather switch out against Tyranitar.

========
Maximized EVs in Special Defense and HP combined with a Sassy nature boost Tyranitar's capabilities in tanking special attacks, allowing it to survive super effective moves. Sand Stream gives Tyranitar a Special Defense boost under the sand, increasing its bulk while also breaking potential Focus Sashes on opposing Pokemon. Three items can be used to great effect on Tyranitar, the first being Leftovers, giving it passive recovery, since it lacks reliable recovery. The second item is Chople Berry, allowing it to not only withstand non-STAB Fighting-type moves but also survive Choice Scarf Keldeo's Secret Sword and Mega Gardevoir's Focus Blast and cripple them with Thunder Wave. Tyranitarite gives it slightly more bulk, Speed, and Attack and allows it to beat specially offensive Pokemon such as Mega Gardevoir, which falls into Pursuit's KO range after some switches into Stealth Rock. The only downside is that, by using Tyranitarite, you won't be able to use other Dark-type Mega Evolutions such as Mega Sharpedo.
Usage Tips
========
Tyranitar is a good lead, as it can cripple a Pokemon with Thunder Wave, set up Stealth Rock, and beat common Defoggers such as Zapdos, Mandibuzz, and Skarmory. Don't recklessly let Tyranitar faint, as it is helpful for the whole game to easily sponge most special attacks, but do not hesitate to switch it in on such moves, as it can give you momentum. The usage of both Stone Edge and Fire Blast helps a lot in the matchup against Bug teams. Keep Tyranitar healthy, especially against Psychic and Bug teams to deal with threats such as Volcarona and Mega Gardevoir. If Pursuit is ran, keep Tyranitar alive and switch it into Choice-locked Pokemon such as Hoopa-U, Gardevoir, and Victini. Tyranitar's Sand Stream is used to deter the opponent's Focus Sash Pokemon, such as Breloom and Infernape on Fighting; break Multiscale on Dragonite, which is a threat to Dark teams; and deny Mega Venusaur's ability to easily heal up with Synthesis.
Team Options
========
Sableye is a good Pokemon alongside Tyranitar not only due to its Ghost typing granting it immunity to both Fighting-type moves and Rapid Spin but also thanks to Prankster Will-O-Wisp, which can weaken physically offensive Pokemon for Tyranitar. Mandibuzz is another Pokemon that pairs well with Tyranitar, as it doesn't take sandstorm damage thanks to Overcoat and can tank physical Fighting-type moves while Tyranitar sponges special attacks directed towards Mandibuzz such as Ice Beam and Thunderbolt. Hydreigon mitigates Tyranitar's weaknesses to Grass, Water, and Ground thanks to its secondary typing in Dragon and ability in Levitate. It also has access to great coverage moves such as Flamethrower and Earth Power against Steel-types and Flash Cannon against Fairy-types. Both Choice Scarf Hoopa-U and Choice Scarf Honchkrow fend off Fighting-types, which are a problem to Tyranitar, but they must be wary of faster Choice Scarf Fighting-types. Bisharp is another good choice, as thanks to its ability in Defiant, it can switch in on a potential Defog to boost its Attack.

Moves
========
Dragon Dance boosts Tyranitar's already high Attack and its low Speed. Stone Edge provides coverage against a lot of types that trouble Dark such as Flying, Fire, and Bug. Crunch is another good STAB move that hits a lot of types neutrally, and without it, Tyranitar has trouble taking out bulky Psychic-types such as Slowbro and Mew. For the last move, Fire Punch notably takes on bulky Steel-types such as Ferrothorn, Scizor, Magnezone, and Bisharp and is a more reliable move against Skarmory, while Ice Punch can be used to hit Ground- and Dragon-types such as Gliscor, Garchomp, and Landorus-T super effectively.
Set Details
========
Maximized EVs in Attack and Speed turn Tyranitar into a monster, as it has a phenomenal Attack when fully invested. Tyranitarite offers an increase in both bulk, giving it easier time setting up, and offense. Mega Tyranitar is slow compared to other offensive Pokemon, so a Jolly nature is used to outspeed some Pokemon after a Dragon Dance such as Alakazam, Tornadus, and Weavile.
Usage Tips
========
Tyranitar is best used at the end of the game, as it can serve as a powerful late-game sweeper after its checks, such as Breloom, Mega Lopunny, Scizor, and Choice Scarf users, have been removed. It is better to set up on specially offensive Pokemon that don't have effective coverage against Tyranitar, such as Zapdos, Hydreigon, and Latias. Don't let Tyranitar take damage prior to setting up, as it has no means of recovery, and don't let it fall victim to a status move, since it is also heavily crippled by status conditions. It can also be used as a strong wallbreaker mid-game after a Dragon Dance, allowing it to remove physical walls, which gives opportunities to Weavile and Bisharp to sweep late-game.
Team Options
========
Entry hazard setters, such as Krookodile, are preferred on the team as it allows weakens the foe allowing Mega Tyranitar to achieve easier OHKOs especially against Flying-, and Fire-type teams. Sableye can absorb Fighting moves and spread burns, allowing Tyranitar to set up on offensive Pokemon more easily. Mandibuzz is another great Pokemon by Tyranitar's side because it is able to sponge attacks, especially from Fighting-types, has a useful move in Foul Play, and can utilize Defog to remove hazards, such as Sticky Web. Tyranitar has no way of taking on Fighting-types, so Choice Scarf Honchkrow or Hoopa-U is appreciated, as they can clean the field for it. Crawdaunt can be used alongside Tyranitar to take on bulky Ground-types, which are troublesome for Tyranitar. Bisharp can take on Fairy-types, especially Sylveon and Clefable, and also has access to Sucker Punch, which can weaken or OHKO faster threats.

Other Options
=============
An offensive non-Mega Tyranitar set with Dragon Dance can be used, but it is too slow and Tyranitar's bulk and utility are more valuable. Iron Head and Superpower are also good options on the Mega Dragon Dance set. The former helps Tyranitar against Fairy-types, while the latter allows it to hit Normal-types and Keldeo.
Checks and Counters
===================
**Dark:**
**Super Effective Attacks**: Tyranitar suffers from seven weaknesses and should be wary of coverage moves that can hit it for significant damage.
**Fighting-type Pokemon**: Due to Tyranitar's crippling weakness to Fighting and its lack of coverage to hit them, it matches up poorly against them. Tyranitar is also outsped by most if not all Fighting-types.
**Bulky Ground-type Pokemon**: Most bulky Ground-type Pokemon can take on anything Tyranitar has to offer such as Gastrodon, Hippowdon, and Landorus-T, but they have to be wary of Ice-type coverage on the Dragon Dance set.
**Water-type Pokemon**: Water-type don't fear the support set, as most of them aren't heavily affected by paralysis and beat Tyranitar easily. Even Dragon Dance, Tyranitar can have a hard time setting up and be walled by a lot of Water-type Pokemon such as Keldeo.
**Steel-type Pokemon**: These Pokemon resist Stone Edge and can damage Tyranitar with their STAB moves, but Pokemon such as Klefki, Scizor, and Bisharp have to be wary of the Fire-type coverage it has access to.
