[OVERVIEW]

**Psychic**:

With some of the highest mixed attacking stats in the game, extremely strong STAB options, and completely unresisted coverage, it's no wonder that Hoopa-U is one of the most threatening wallbreakers in the entire Monotype metagame. For Psychic-type teams, Hoopa-U also functions as a Ghost-type and Dark-type check, with a neutrality to both types and a sky-high Special Defense stat. Its mixed potential and coverage makes it extremely unpredictable; Hoopa-U can use all three of Choice Scarf, Choice Specs, and Choice Band effectively and can even use bulky and mixed sets. Slower types like Normal, Water, Psychic, and Flying often find themselves having to lose a Pokemon every time Hoopa-U attacks in order to find out what set it is using. While Hoopa-U is nearly impossible to consistently counter defensively, it is very easy to check offensively. A typing that gives it zero resistances and a 4x weakness to Bug-type moves in addition to its extremely low physical bulk means that Hoopa-U will be forced to switch out very frequently. Furthermore, while Hoopa-U can utilize all three Choice items effectively, if it does not use Choice Scarf, it is quite slow for a wallbreaker and finds itself being outsped by most offensive threats, and if it does use Choice Scarf, it trades its middling speed for a very noticeable lack in power; however, Hoopa-U's sheer wallbreaking potential solidifies its spot onto most balanced Psychic teams.

**Dark**:

Hoopa-U has a crucial, coveted role on Dark-type teams as a Fighting check, made possible through its typing. With with a Choice Scarf, Hoopa-U is able to revenge kill some of the biggest threats to Dark teams, including Mega Heracross, Infernape, Mega Lopunny, and perhaps most importantly, Keldeo, which is far and away the most difficult Pokemon to switch into for Dark-type teams. Hoopa-U's access to Hyperspace Hole also lets it revenge kill Substitute variants of the above threats, most notably Substitute Keldeo and Substitute Mega Heracross. Moreover, while Hoopa-U's primary role is to revenge kill with its Choice Scarf set, it is also a good mixed attacker and a strong special attacker in general, with strong offensive stats that are unique for Dark-type Pokemon. Unfortunately, outside of providing strong STAB Psychic-type moves, Hoopa-U's typing is extremely lackluster. It gives zero resistances and adds a 4x weakness to Bug-type moves, and its neutrality to Fighting-type moves is not very useful due to its pitiful Defense, not letting it stand a chance against any physical attacking Fighting-type. Hoopa-U also gravely misses power boosts from other items when it is using Choice Scarf, and if it attempts to run such an item, it is no longer able to check Fighting-types and becomes nearly useless against faster threats.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Dark Pulse is Hoopa-U's primary STAB move, as it is powerful and has no drawbacks. Psyshock is another very strong STAB move that hits specially defensive Pokemon; it is able to 2HKO Chansey after Stealth Rock damage and can also 2HKO specially defensive Zapdos and Lanturn where Dark Pulse cannot. Focus Blast rounds out Hoopa-U's coverage, hitting Dark-types like Tyranitar and Bisharp, which resist both of Hoopa-U's STAB moves. Focus Blast also hits Steel-types much harder than Dark Pulse. Finally, Thunderbolt is used to be able to hit Mandibuzz, which is able to switch into any other move. It is stronger than Hoopa-U's STAB moves against Water-type Pokemon as well, and it is more reliable against Gyarados and Mega Gyarados, easing prediction. Trick is an option to cripple walls, although Hoopa-U will not use it often, as its coverage with Thunderbolt is unresisted.

Set Details
========

This set uses a simple EV spread with maximum Special Attack and Speed with a Timid nature to make Hoopa-U as fast and as powerful as possible. Choice Specs boosts Hoopa-U's Special Attack to monstrous levels, letting it 2HKO nearly the entire metagame. Life Orb is an option to let Hoopa-U switch moves so that it cannot be taken advantage of as easily, but Hoopa-U often finds that it only needs to use one move against many types, and in addition the Life Orb recoil reduces Hoopa-U's effectiveness as a Ghost switch-in.

Usage Tips
========

Switch Hoopa-U into neutral special moves like Scald and Shadow Ball and proceed to break walls with the appropriate move. Use it early- and mid-game to break walls, as it has unresisted coverage and is very difficult to switch into. If there are specially attacking threats like Gengar, Meloetta, and Alakazam, keep Hoopa-U healthy so that it can check these threats and so they are not able to freely use Shadow Ball. As this set is Choice locked, (RH) choose Hoopa-U's moves very carefully, as Hoopa-U can be taken advantage of very easily if it is locked into the wrong move. For example, Dark-type Pokemon like Mega Gyarados and Bisharp are able to set up if Hoopa-U uses Dark Pulse against a Water-type team or Steel-type team, respectively. Avoid switching into Pokemon that can potentially paralyze Hoopa-U, as this set relies on Hoopa-U's ability to outspeed most walls.

Team Options
========

Slowbro is a great Pokemon to take U-turn and Knock Off with its large physical bulk, and it appreciates Hoopa-U's utility as a Ghost check with its great special bulk. It can also spread paralysis to help Hoopa-U outspeed threats, letting it be more effective against faster, offensive teams. Stealth Rock support is very helpful for this set, as it can turn 3HKOs into 2HKOs; Pokemon like Mew and Celebi are good setters, with the former being able to ease pressure on Hoopa-U by spreading burns and the latter also being able to spread paralysis like Slowbro. Choice Scarf Victini does great against Bug-types, which Hoopa-U has a 4x weakness to. It is also able to revenge kill faster Pokemon, and it can bring in Hoopa-U with U-turn, forming a potent wallbreaking core. While this set is able to deal with Dark-types, it can struggle against priority and can often pick the wrong move to lock into. Therefore, Mega Gardevoir is helpful in its ability to take on Dark-type teams more reliably.

[SET]
name: Choice Band (Psychic / Choice Band)
move 1: Hyperspace Fury
move 2: Drain Punch
move 3: Gunk Shot
move 4: Fire Punch / Trick / Zen Headbutt
item: Choice Band
ability: Magician
nature: Jolly
evs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Hyperspace Fury is the main STAB move with no drawbacks, and it is extremely strong with additional utility of breaking through Substitute and Protect, letting it muscle past Pokemon like Alomomola. Drain Punch hits Dark-type Pokemon, which resist both of Hoopa-U's STAB moves, most notably Tyranitar and Bisharp. Gunk Shot hits Fairy-type Pokemon; it is able to OHKO Pokemon like Clefable and Azumarill. Fire Punch finishes off Hoopa-U's coverage; it hits Klefki and is more reliable against Mega Scizor and Skarmory. Trick can be used as well to cripple walls, particularly crippling Mandibuzz, which walls this set. Zen Headbutt can be used as another STAB move to hit Fighting-type Pokemon and Mega Venusaur.

Set Details
========

Maximum Special Attack and Speed with a Jolly nature makes Hoopa-U as strong and fast as possible, and Choice Band lets Hoopa-U OHKO many offensive threats with its extremely strong STAB moves.

Usage Tips
========

This Hoopa-U set is mainly used over Choice Specs due to its greater immediate power with its STAB Hyperspace Fury; therefore, use it early- and mid-game and use this move freely to wallbreak. Choose Hoopa-U's move carefully, however, as Hoopa-U locked into the wrong move can be taken advantage of quite easily; for example, Dark-types like Mega Gyarados and Bisharp can set up on it. This Hoopa-U set is able to switch into neutral special moves like Dark Pulse and Shadow Ball, so take advantage of this fact by not using it recklessly and preserving it to check threats like Gengar, Hydreigon, and Meloetta. Be mindful of paralysis and burn inducers, as these status conditions very strongly limit this set's effectiveness. In addition, do not switch Hoopa-U into Scald.

Team Options
========

Hazard support is very helpful to turn 2HKOs into OHKOs on more offensive Pokemon: Celebi and Mew are good Stealth Rock setters, and Deoxys-S and Deoxys-D are good Spikes setters. Celebi and Deoxys-D are also able to spread paralysis, which helps Hoopa-U greatly because it makes up for its middling speed and lets it outspeed offensive threats. Slowbro is in a similar vein, as it has access to paralysis as well; in addition, it has great physical bulk that complements Hoopa-U's special bulk nicely, and it can take weaker U-turn and Knock Off aimed at Hoopa-U. Choice Scarf Victini can deal with Bug-type Pokemon and can revenge kill faster Pokemon that threaten Hoopa-U. This set cannot get past Mandibuzz, so Mega Gardevoir is very useful to get past it and deal with other Dark-types more reliably in general.

[SET]
name: Mixed Life Orb (Psychic / Mixed Life Orb)
move 1: Dark Pulse
move 2: Drain Punch
move 3: Gunk Shot
move 4: Thunderbolt / Energy Ball
item: Life Orb
ability: Magician
nature: Hasty
evs: 48 Atk / 208 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Dark Pulse is a strong STAB move that hits physically defensive Pokemon like Skarmory and Hippowdon hard and has few drawbacks. Drain Punch hits Dark-types that resist Hoopa-U's coverage. Gunk Shot hits Fairy-type Pokemon like Azumarill, Togekiss, and Clefable. The last moveslot is used as additional coverage; Thunderbolt hits Mandibuzz while also hitting Water-type Pokemon slightly harder than Dark Pulse, while Energy Ball can be used to get past specially defensive Gastrodon and can hit Ground-type Pokemon like mixed defense Hippowdon harder than Dark Pulse. Hyperspace Fury can be used as an alternate STAB move to do much more damage to specially defensive Pokemon like Zapdos and Lanturn.

Set Details
========

Maximum Speed and a Hasty nature are used to make Hoopa as fast as possible. Hasty is preferred over Naive because Hoopa-U can make effective use of its Special Defense stat, whereas its Defense is so low that a negative nature barely affects it. 48 Attack EVs ensure the OHKO on Tyranitar with Drain Punch, and the rest is dumped into Special Attack to make the main STAB move, Dark Pulse, hit harder. If using Hyperspace Fury, use maximum Attack investment rather than splitting Hoopa-U's offenses, as its special coverage moves do not need any investment. Life Orb lets Hoopa-U switch moves freely and makes it very hard to pivot into.

Usage Tips
========

This set has the benefit of being able to switch moves, making it very effective against Dark-, Water-, and Steel-type teams, where it can often be difficult to choose the right move. Since this set has Life Orb, it is not the best switch-in to Ghost- and Dark-type moves because of the recoil. Don't let this Hoopa-U get statused, as it hates all forms of it; paralysis limits it ability to wallbreak, burns cut its Attack, and poison stacks with Life Orb to wear down Hoopa-U very quickly. Dark Pulse is usually a safe move to use, especially on this set because it can switch moves against Pokemon that try to pivot into a locked move.

Team Options
========

As this set has Life Orb, it is not able to check Ghost- and Dark-types as effectively, so it appreciates other checks to these like Meloetta and Gardevoir, respectively. Mew and Celebi are good options for Stealth Rock support, turning many 3HKOs into 2HKOs for this set. Choice Scarf Victini is a good teammate to deal with Bug-types and to revenge kill faster Pokemon and does well against faster types like Fighting, and it appreciates Hoopa-U's wallbreaking power so it can sweep late-game. Alakazam shares similar checks to Hoopa-U, so it appreciates Hoopa-U's wallbreaking as well.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Hyperspace Hole is one of the biggest selling points of Hoopa-U for Dark teams, as it lets them hit Fighting-type Pokemon super effectively. It is especially nice against Substitute Keldeo, as it goes through Substitute and can revenge kill it effectively. Hyperspace Fury is a spammable STAB move that is very strong and hits specially defensive Pokemon hard; it can also revenge kill Mega Gardevoir. Gunk Shot hits Fairy-type Pokemon like Clefable and Azumarill. Focus Blast hits Dark-type Pokemon like Bisharp, Tyranitar, and Weavile while 2HKOing physically defensive Steel-type Pokemon like Skarmory and Klefki. Energy Ball is an optional coverage move that can be useful as a move with no drawbacks against Water-type teams, easing prediction with Hoopa-U's dual STAB moves. It can also be used to more reliably break through the Hippowdon + Gastrodon core on Ground teams. Drain Punch can be used over Focus Blast to more reliably hit Dark-type Pokemon, notably OHKOing Tyranitar, but it misses out on Skarmory and Klefki. Trick is an option to cripple walls, but this set loves all of its coverage moves, so it is hard to fit.

Set Details
========

Maximum Speed with a Hasty nature is used to make Hoopa-U as fast as possible; a Hasty nature is preferred over Naive because Hoopa-U can make effective use of its Special Defense stat whereas its Defense is so low that a negative nature barely affects it. 116 Special Attack EVs guarantee the OHKO on Keldeo with Hyperspace Hole, and the rest is dumped into Attack to boost the rest of Hoopa-U's moves. Choice Scarf makes Hoopa-U faster than the unboosted metagame and lets it revenge kill Pokemon like Keldeo, Infernape, and Mega Heracross.

Usage Tips
========

While this set is able to check Fighting-types, do not switch directly into them, as Hoopa-U has bad Defense. Be careful of switching into status moves as well, as paralysis heavily cripples this set and burns prevent Hoopa-U from using its strong STAB Hyperspace Fury. Use this set to revenge kill Pokemon like Keldeo, Mega Gardevoir, and Tornadus-T. Hyperspace Fury in general is a very nice STAB move to use freely.

Team Options
========

Tyranitar sets up Stealth Rock and appreciates Hoopa-U's ability to get rid of Fighting-type Pokemon. Mandibuzz can absorb U-turn and most physical attacks for Hoopa-U. Crawdaunt, Hydreigon, and Bisharp are good wallbreakers than can get past Pokemon that wall Hoopa-U and can allow for a late-game sweep; Bisharp in particular can deal with Fairy-type Pokemon, and Hydreigon can lure Fairy-type Pokemon and wear them down for Hoopa-U with Flash Cannon and can get rid of Steel-type Pokemon like Mega Scizor with Fire Blast.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

**Psychic**:

Choice Scarf can be a tempting option for Hoopa-U on Psychic teams, but Psychic has access to a lot of Pokemon that can utilize a Choice Scarf more effectively, like Victini, Latios, and Gardevoir. Psychic generally appreciates the wallbreaking ability provided by Hoopa-U much better. Nasty Plot is very hard to set up and Choice Specs almost always does better, but it can be nice in some matchups, particularly against stall variants of Water teams. Hoopa-U can use a set of Substitute, Dark Pulse, Hidden Power Fire, and Drain Punch to devastate Steel-type teams, but such a set is very matchup dependent, as it is near useless in many other matchups. It fits on Psychic teams that are very weak to Steel-type teams, however. Niche items like Assault Vest and Focus Sash could be used; the former allows Hoopa-U to check Chandelure and Meloetta better, while the latter can be utilized with Magician, though Hoopa-U usually prefers other items.

**Dark**:

Thunderbolt can be used to hit Mandibuzz, but this set has troubles giving up any of its coverage moves. A fully special Choice Scarf set can be used, but Hyperspace Fury generally makes physically inclined sets better, as it has much more immediate power and boasts feats such as OHKOing Mega Gardevoir after Stealth Rock. Hoopa-U can use Choice Specs, Choice Band, and Life Orb to boost its power, but these items lose Hoopa-U's main niche of checking Fighting-types with Choice Scarf. It provides nearly nothing synergistically for Dark teams, and Hydreigon is usually better with these items, as it provides better defensive synergy and is faster.

Checks and Counters
===================
**Psychic**:

**Faster Pokemon**: Because Hoopa-U's speed is mediocre at best and it has terrible physical bulk, it is very easily forced out by most offensive Pokemon, like Victini, Landorus-T, Mega Medicham, and Weavile.

**Priority**: Hoopa-U's low physical bulk makes it susceptible to strong priority moves like Dragonite's Extreme Speed, Bisharp's Sucker Punch, and Mega Scizor's Bullet Punch.

**Status**: Hoopa-U loathes paralysis because of its frailty and cannot effectively switch into Ghost-type moves if worn down by poison or burn damage. Mixed and physical sets especially dislike burn, as they cripple Hoopa-U's Attack.

**Mandibuzz**: Sets lacking Thunderbolt are walled by Mandibuzz, which can 2HKO Hoopa-U with STAB Foul Play.

**Dark**:

**Faster Pokemon**: Because Hoopa-U's Speed is mediocre at best and has terrible physical bulk, it is very easily forced out by faster Choice Scarf users, like Victini, Landorus-T, Jirachi, and Terrakion.

**Priority**: Hoopa-U's low physical bulk makes it susceptible to strong priority moves like Dragonite's Extreme Speed, Bisharp's Sucker Punch, and Mega Scizor's Bullet Punch if Hoopa-U has taken prior damage.

**Status**: As this set relies on the Speed boost from Choice Scarf, paralysis neuters Hoopa-U due to its low Defense. Burns also cripple Hoopa-U, as it is then unable to utilize its strongest STAB move to its full potential.

**Mixed Walls**: Since this set's damage is not boosted by an item, mixed walls like Porygon2, Chansey, and Alomomola are able to switch into Hoopa-U and wall it.

**Mandibuzz**: Sets lacking Thunderbolt are walled by Mandibuzz, which can 2HKO Hoopa-U with STAB Foul Play.

It was long, but all the critical points were there. I think being a little more detailed would be helpful, although of course in some cases there really is nothing more to talk about (i.e. Set Details, which is very straightforward for most sets) I don't have much except for a few recurring notes, really well done on such a long analysis for a nuanced Pokemon.

Checks and Counters:
Both
:
I think you should add status:

Paralysis is severely crippling. Most walls are 2HKOed and cannot switch in by virtue of their lack of Speed, but if Hoopa-U is paralyzed, they can fish for a full paralysis by spamming their recovery moves. Especially for a Choice Scarf set that wants to revenge kill and gave up power to do so, being paralyzed is essentially a death sentence.

Both sets despise taking residual damage from burns and poisons, of course the physical set especially hates burns due to the halving of its Attack. Residual damage makes the already quite physically vulnerable Hoopa-U even easier to revenge kill with priority moves, almost none of which are actually capable of doing so to a full health Hoopa-U.

Dark:
Mega Diancie cannot switch into either Hyperspace Hole or Gunk Shot, the two attacks Hoopa-U is most likely to use against a Fairy team, since Hoopa-U will be faster and will simply 2HKO it. While technically Klefki is going to get 2HKOed by Focus Blast, it can still switch in due to screens and the fact that Hoopa-U is unlikely to use Focus Blast in the first place.

I think Mega Sableye should be mentioned like Mandibuzz is, as the Choice Scarf set will never be able to touch Mega Sableye, and worse, Mega Sableye can Will-O-Wisp Hoopa-U to cripple it or start setting up Calm Mind boosts.

I would also give Chansey a mention for walling the Choice Scarf set completely and getting free turns to use Stealth Rock, Toxic, Thunder Wave, or Heal Bell.

Psychic:
I am unsure whether this should go here or in Usage Tips, but I think (Mega) Gyarados is a good, although sort of unreliable, check for all sets of Hoopa-U. Basically, if Hoopa-U Choice locks into a bad move that is resisted by either Gyarados or Mega Gyarados, (Mega) Gyarados sets up shop and goes to town. Life Orb Hoopa-U lacks a move that can OHKO Mega Gyarados.

As another check, Klefki is great for setting up the appropriate screen or paralyzing Hoopa-U. It has a hard time switching into the Choice Specs set or Choice Band sets with Fire Punch, but otherwise is a decent check I think.

Other Options:
Psychic:
Steelbreaker is a must for a mention if you aren't making it a full set. It sucks in most matchups not named Steel, for obvious reasons, but it's still a legitimate set that people should know about.

Something I've played around with a lot in the past is the idea of Focus Sash Hoopa-U to take advantage of Magician in an unexpected way, and it can be a surprise emergency check. Of course it's hard to use if your team lacks reliable entry hazard removal, and it is somewhat niche/gimmicky. But, I don't think it's any worse than AV Hoopa-U, so if that's in OO I think this should be too.

For the Nasty Plot thing, I would mention that in general Choice Specs does the job better. Hoopa-U is far too slow and frail to realistically pull off any sort of sweep, so Nasty Plot is only really useful for wallbreaking. But Choice Specs Hoopa can at worst 2HKO the entire metagame.

Dark:
I think Nasty Plot shouldn't be mentioned here at all. It's just awful compared to Band / Specs / LO, which are all seriously bad when compared to Scarf. At least Band / Specs / LO sorta maybe have a niche, but Nasty Plot is, in my opinion, objectively bad on Dark.

Alongside Thunderbolt, I would consider mentioning Energy Ball. Swampert is a common problem for a lot of Dark teams and Pokemon and hitting other bulky waters or bulky grounds is great.

Mixed Choice Scarf
Set:

I would seriously consider slashing Drain Punch / Focus Blast. Focus Blast can 2HKO Skarmory, which would otherwise wall this set completely. Focus Blast also 2HKOes Porygon2, which would also otherwise wall this set. Chansey, surprisingly, walls Choice Scarf Hoopa-U altogether.

Moves:
If you don't slash Focus Blast, I would at least mention it here. Of course, for generic Dark-type Pokemon, the reliability of Drain Punch is preferred.

Set Details:
Probably mention that Hasty > Naive because Hoopa-U appreciates having a great Special Defense stat, and its physical bulk is so low the nature barely affects it.

Usage Tips:
I would recommend saying to avoid status completely. A paralyzed Choice Scarf Hoopa-U is basically a dead Hoopa-U. Burns halve Hoopa-U's low unboosted Attack, and Toxic will wear it down quickly.

I think noting that Choice Scarf Hoopa-U with Hyperspace Hole is the only real check to Substitute + Calm Mind Keldeo is important, as otherwise this set runs right through Dark. That being said, if Keldeo has gotten even one Calm Mind, it can OHKO Hoopa-U with Secret Sword and can survive one Hyperspace Hole even after using Substitute.

This Hoopa-U can also act as a cleaner late-game, but must have priority users and faster Choice Scarf users taken out first.

Team Options:
Mega Sableye is an amazing teammate. Great physical bulk, access to Will-O-Wisp to cripple physical attackers, Magic Bounce to keep away entry hazards and bounce status moves, potential wincon with Calm Mind, otherwise provides Knock Off support to allow Hoopa-U to break the Chansey and Porygon2 core with Focus Blast, immunity to Fighting-type moves, the list goes on. Absolutely mention Mega Sableye as what might just be the best teammate.

I would consider at least mentioning Hydreigon, which can help Hoopa-U deal with a lot of annoying foes. Steel types like Klefki, Mega Scizor, and Skarmory are dropped by Fire Blast, while other Fairy-types are threatened by Flash Cannon, which can 2HKO Clefable on the switch in, and threatens bulky Dragon-types such as Garchomp, which can tank Hoopa-U's attacks, with Draco Meteor.

Mixed Life Orb
Moves:

If Hyperspace Fury is used, Thunderbolt is basically necessary for beating Skarmory. Not having Dark Pulse also makes Mega Sableye a solid counter to this set, which is a negative you can mention.

Set Details:
Explain Hasty > Naive. I would just do this in every set I think. Physical attacks aren't easily absorbed regardless, so preserving its Special Defense is more important.

Team Options:
Small addition to Victini, its access to U-turn and ability to force switches can be helpful for bringing Hoopa-U in safely.

Slowbro also takes almost all priority attacks very easily for Hoopa-U, making it difficult to revenge kill Hoopa-U with priority attacks.

Choice Band
Usage Tips:

Choice Band Hoopa-U excels in matchups against balanced and stall, but is almost a liability against HO. Due to being Choice-locked after getting a kill, most HO teams will be able to capitalize on this with a suitable revenge killer or a set up Pokemon, so use Hoopa-U sparingly against HO.

Take advantage of Hoopa-U's wallbreaking power early-game to break balanced cores for the rest of the team.

Avoid burns and paralysis like the plague. Both of these statuses will cripple this set and make it very difficult for Hoopa-U to do its jobs. Toxic damage will slowly whittle down Hoopa-U as well, but isn't nearly as troublesome.

Team Options:
Victini also gets U-turn and can bring Hoopa-U in to break the walls that try to stop Victini, opening up an opportunity for Victini to clean later in the game.

Again, Slowbro can handle priority moves.

Mega Gardevoir also handles Mega Sableye, which although it cannot switch into this Hoopa-U set, with a free switch it can take one Hyperspace Fury to Will-O-Wisp burn it and proceed to wall it afterwards.

Choice Specs
Usage Tips:

Paralysis in particular is really annoying for this set. Burns and Toxic poison is a little less annoying, but putting Hoopa-U on a timer can be dangerous, and it gets put into priority range more easily.

Team Options
:
Three really small things: I would mention this set is pretty self-sufficient, only needing teammates that can switch into attacks from potential revenge killers.

Again, I'd mention Victini U-turn for getting in Hoopa-U into walls safely and that Slowbro can deal with priority.

You mention Mega Gardevoir beats Mega Sableye, but this set breaks Mega Sableye, assuming Mega Sableye doesn't get free Calm Mind boosts up.

Team Options:
Three really small things: I would mention this set is pretty self-sufficient, only needing teammates that can switch into attacks from potential revenge killers.

Again, I'd mention Victini U-turn for getting in Hoopa-U into walls safely and that Slowbro can deal with priority.

You mention Mega Gardevoir beats Mega Sableye, but this set breaks Mega Sableye, assuming Mega Sableye doesn't get free Calm Mind boosts up.

QC 1/3
Implemented:

  • I will add Mega Sableye to "Mixed walls" as it does not distinctively wall every move like Mandibuzz does; still takes a lot from STAB Dark moves
  • I don't agree with adding Energy Ball to Dark OO - coverage like this is fine in Psychic because the 4th coverage move is pretty free, but Dark teams really need the Psychic STAB, the spammable Dark STAB, Gunk Shot, and Fighting move. Hoopa-U's STABs already do enough to Ground-type Pokemon.
  • Don't agree with Toxic being that big of an issue for Scarf Hoopa-U, offensive Pokemon in general don't mind Toxic at all and Hoopa-U especially is more of a hit-and-run sort of attacker so Toxic isn't really effective against it
  • "If Hyperspace Fury is used, Thunderbolt is basically necessary for beating Skarmory" It can be seen both ways - you could also want e-ball to break Hippowdon which happens to wall Hyperspace Fury Hoopa-U, so I won't mention it.
  • "Not having Dark Pulse also makes Mega Sableye a solid counter to this set, which is a negative you can mention." 252 Atk Life Orb Hoopa Unbound Hyperspace Fury vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mega Sableye: 153-181 (50.3 - 59.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
  • "Choice Band Hoopa-U excels in matchups against balanced and stall, but is almost a liability against HO. Due to being Choice-locked after getting a kill, most HO teams will be able to capitalize on this with a suitable revenge killer or a set up Pokemon, so use Hoopa-U sparingly against HO." unsure how to phrase this without being redundant with the line i already have: "Choose move carefully as Hoopa-U locked into the wrong move can be taken advantage of by different Pokemon, especially Dark-type Pokemon like Mega Gyarados and Bisharp that can set up."
  • "You mention Mega Gardevoir beats Mega Sableye, but this set breaks Mega Sableye, assuming Mega Sableye doesn't get free Calm Mind boosts up" this is why i say "more reliably"
  • I'll be more detailed when I write it up
thanks! you went out of order so i kept having to scroll up and down ;w;

just an amateur check.

There no reason not to run energy ball on a scarf set on dark teams. scarf drain punch is pretty useless and it just sucks momentum. The mention of it hitting bisharp doesn't make sense to me either because with a hasty nature, hoopa just gets decimated by sucker punch with any sort of chip damage on it and even if its healthy, opposing steel or dark builds have mons that switch into drain punch very easily causing you to lose any and all momentum. Energy imo is far more useful to spam against the best type in the meta right now (water) and ground teams.

I also like Energy Ball quite a bit here, but I think Focus Blast should be the first and Energy Ball slashed after. Focus Blast I think is just really important for hitting Klefki on a prediction, which otherwise walls Hoopa-U quite fantastically. It also hits Skarmory for a solid 2HKO. It's a bit tempting to mention that it 2HKOes Porygon2, but that's not really important when Dark has so many Knock Off users and Chansey tanks it anyway. I think Energy Ball hitting Swampert and Gastrodon is nice, but both are walled by Mega Sableye anyway right now, so it should be second in my opinion.

I don't like Energy Ball since Focus Blast / Drain Punch perfectly finishes Hoopa's coverage and without it it can be pretty annoying finding yourself walled by dark mons (ttar, weavile, bisharp, crawdaunt etc etc)-- the comment about Bisharp was more geared towards Bisharp being able to set up on it, not revenge killing it. A boosted Bisharp is a pretty big threat to Dark teams, especially if it's lum. Not sure how fighting move is a momentum suck if it's directly comparable to enregy ball -- the only time you're going to be using it is against Steel and Dark teams, just like you're only going to use E-ball vs water / ground teams.

In addition, Hyperspace Hole already nearly 2HKOs both common Hippowdon and Gastrodon spreads, both of whom are nearly useless against Mega Sableye teams anyways)

and Energy ball invites in Mega Garchomp and/or Landorus (both of whom have no switchins on Dark teams, contrary to the other mons).

This means that Energy Ball in this matchup has only one purpose: slightly ease prediction, and turning it into a hit and run game where you trade kills with Mega Garchomp and Landorus.

In the Water matchup it's more useful, but even then dual STABs + Gunk Shot terrorize Water teams -- they really have no switchins, and again E-ball baits in Empoleon (no Scald switchins, and this Scald is actually powerful unlike Gastro's)

You're going to have to give me a better reason than "you can use it vs types that are weak to Grass" to slash it when Hoopa's coverage is nearly flawless in the first place. I will concede to adding it to OO for now.

How does "nearly" 2hkoing them justify hyperspace hole being good enough in that matchup. Shit, it doesnt even really get close to 2hkoing gastro even after rocks. I guess sab beats gastro but its not ideal to be hard switching it in on potential scalds and potentially getting burnt.

You're also going to be in a hit and run game with mega garchomp regardless, hoopa can't ohko it with any of its moves. Dunno why you brought up lando because It doesn't trade kills with landorus. Landorus cant ohko hoopa and hoopa 2hkos with energy ball after rocks anyways.

If your so high on empoleon being able to take advantage of energy ball, it takes advantage of its duel stabs as well. If you are trying to revenge something like a keldeo, it comes in anyways, and if ur looking to spam fury, keldeo comes in and now you have to sack something. That being said, not everyone runs empoleon. Its just a lot easier with energy ball because you can 1v1 mons a lot easier instead of 2hkoing them having to take damage in the process. Something like an azumarill is much more easily handled. You have a safe way of taking care of it (need pebbles up tho) instead of having to sack multiple mons to make it revengable.

I'm fine with having FB go first because ive used that as well and it does wonders for that set. There's just no reason to run drain punch. Its terrible. Hitting ttar and bisharp is pointless as your opponent is going to be trying to wall you with mandibuzz instead as t bolt is very uncommon on scarf sets. Nobody in their right mind would try and use ttar or bisharp to take advantage of hoopa. I guess if you really want to hit weavile you can keep it but I don't see a reason not to use energy ball or FB over it.

Edit: I forgot to adress the "using fighting coverage agaist steel and dark is the same as e ball against ground and water." If ur referring to focus blast, then yes it does a better job at making that statement valid. Drain punch does not fit in that statement. Energy ball can be at least be mildy difficult to switch into early game and even harder late game in those matchups. Steel and dark teams do not care about drain punch. Each type has hard answers for it that make it a momentum suck. Steel teams can just pivot into doublade or mega scizor and go from there while mandibuzz says hello on dark.

Again, im not against all fighting coverage. Focus blast is fine, but scarf drain punch is just useless.

116 SpA Hoopa Unbound Hyperspace Hole vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Gastrodon: 175-207 (41 - 48.5%) this is the most common Gastrodon spread; it 2HKOs with any prior damage whatsoever. If it's Specially Defensive, Hyperspace Fury is a guaranteed 2HKO.

116 SpA Hoopa Unbound Hyperspace Hole vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Hippowdon: 195-229 (46.4 - 54.5%) same deal, even more so

If you really wanted to get past them you could just use max Special Attack..

As for Drain Punch, it's just a lot more reliable than Focus Blast in hitting Dark-types. It does miss out on Skarmory and Klefki, though, and it is pretty weak so its biggest and only niche is probably just its consistency. I'll remove its slash.

I will slash it solely for its use against Water teams, since i really do think it doesn't do anything vs Ground

GP 1/2

[OVERVIEW]

**Psychic**: (colon)

With some of the highest mixed attacking stats in the game, extremely strong STAB options, and completely unresisted coverage, it's no wonder that Hoopa-U is one of the most threatening wallbreakers in the entire Monotype metagame. For Psychic-type teams, Hoopa-U also functions as a Ghost-type and Dark-type check, with a neutrality to both types moves and a sky-high Special Defense stat. While Hoopa-U is nearly impossible to consistently counter defensively, it is very easy to check it offensively. A typing that gives it zero resistances and a 4x weakness to Bug-type moves in addition to its extremely low physical bulk means that Hoopa-U will be forced to switch out very frequently. And Furthermore, while Hoopa-U can utilize all three Choice items effectively, if it does not use Choice Scarf, it Hoopa-U is quite slow for a wallbreaker and finds itself being outsped by most offensive threats; if it does use Choice Scarf, it trades its middling speed for a very noticeable lack in power; however, Hoopa-U's sheer wallbreaking potential solidifies its spot onto most balanced Psychic teams. (AP)

**Dark**: (colon)

And Moreover, while Hoopa-U's primary role is to revenge kill with its Choice Scarf set, it is also a good mixed attacker and a strong special attacker in general, with strong offensive stats that are unique for Dark-type Pokemon. Unfortunately, outside of providing for strong STAB Psychic-type moves, Hoopa-U's typing is extremely lackluster.

Moves
========

Dark Pulse is Hoopa-U's primary STAB move, as it is powerful and has no drawbacks. Psyshock is another STAB move that hits specially defensive Pokemon and is also very strong; it is able to 2HKO Chansey after Stealth Rock damage, (RC) and can also 2HKO specially defensive Zapdos and Lanturn where Dark Pulse cannot. Focus Blast rounds out Hoopa-U's coverage, hitting Dark-types like Tyranitar and Bisharp, (AC) which resist both of Hoopa-U's STAB moves. Focus Blast also hits Steel-types much harder than Dark Pulse. Finally, Thunderbolt is used to be able to hit Mandibuzz, (AC) which is able to switch into any other move. It is stronger move than Hoopa-U's STAB moves against Water-type Pokemon as well, and it is more reliable against Gyarados and Mega Gyarados, easing prediction. Trick is an option to cripple walls, although Hoopa-U will not use it often, (AC) as its coverage with Thunderbolt is unresisted.

Set Details
========

This set uses a simple EV spread with maximum Special Attack and Max Speed with a Timid nature to make Hoopa-U as fast and as powerful as possible.

Usage Tips
========

As this set is Choice-locked, choose Hoopa-U's moves very carefully, as Hoopa-U can be taken advantage of very easily if it is locked into the wrong move.

========

Stealth Rock support is very helpful for this set, (AC) as it can turn 3HKOs into 2HKOs; Pokemon like Mew and Celebi are good setters, with the former being able to ease pressure on Hoopa-U by spreading burns, (RC) and the latter also being able to spread paralysis like Slowbro. Choice Scarf Victini does great against Bug-types, which Hoopa-U has a 4x weakness to. It is also able to revenge kill faster Pokemon, and it can bring in Hoopa-U with U-turn, (AC) forming a potent wallbreaking core. While this set is able to deal with Dark-types, it can struggle against priority and can often pick the wrong move to lock into. Therefore As such, Mega Gardevoir is helpful in its ability to take on Dark-type teams more reliably.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Hyperspace Fury is the main STAB move with no drawbacks, and it is extremely strong with additional utility of breaking through Substitute and Protect, letting it muscle past Pokemon like Alomomola. Drain Punch hits Dark-type Pokemon, (AC) which resist both of its Hoopa-U's STAB moves, most notably Tyranitar and Bisharp. Gunk Shot hits Fairy-type Pokemon; it is able to OHKO Pokemon like Clefable and Azumarill. Fire Punch finishes off Hoopa-U's coverage; it hits Klefki and it is more reliable against Mega Scizor and Skarmory. Trick can be used as well to cripple walls, particularly crippling Mandibuzz, (AC) which walls this set. Zen Headbutt can be used as another STAB move to hit Fighting-type Pokemon and Mega Venusaur.

Set Details
========

Maximum Special Attack and Speed with a Jolly nature makes Hoopa-U as strong and fast as possible, and Choice Band lets Hoopa-U OHKO many offensive threats with its extremely strong STAB moves. (so concise i love it)

Usage Tips
========

This Hoopa-U set is mainly used over Choice Specs due to its stronger immediate power with its STAB Hyperspace Fury; therefore as such, use it early- and mid-game and use this move freely to wallbreak. Choose Hoopa-U's move carefully, however, as Hoopa-U locked into the wrong move can be taken advantage of quite easily; (ASC) for example, (AC) Dark-types like Mega Gyarados and Bisharp can set up on it.

========

Hazard support is very helpful to turn 2HKOs into OHKOs on more offensive Pokemon: Celebi and Mew are good Stealth Rock setters, and Deoxys-S and Deoxys-D are good Spikes setters. Celebi and Deoxys-D are also able to spread paralysis, which helps Hoopa-U greatly because as it it makes up for its middling speed and lets it outspeed offensive threats. Slowbro is in a similar vein, (AC) as it has access to paralysis as well; in addition, it has great physical bulk that complements Hoopa-U nicely, and it can take weaker U-turn and Knock Off aimed at Hoopa-U.

Moves
========

Dark Pulse is a strong STAB move that hits physically defensive Pokemon like Skarmory and Hippowdon hard and has little few drawbacks.

Set Details
========

Maximum Speed and a Hasty nature are used to make Hoopa as fast as possible. Hasty nature is preferred over Naive because Hoopa-U can utilize its Special Defense stat, whereas its Defense is so low that a negative nature barely affects it. 48 Attack EVs ensures the OHKO on Tyranitar with Drain Punch, and the rest is dumped into Special Attack to make the main STAB move, Dark Pulse, hit harder. If using Hyperspace Fury, use maximum Attack investment rather than splitting its Hoopa-U's offenses, as its special coverage moves do not need any investment. Life Orb lets Hoopa-U switch moves freely and makes it very hard to pivot into.

Usage Tips
========

This set has the benefit of being able to switch moves, making it very effective against Dark-, (AC) Water-, (AC) and Steel-type teams, (AC) where it can often be difficult to choose the right move. Since this set has Life Orb, is it is not the best switch-in to Ghost- and Dark-type moves because of the recoil. Don't let this Hoopa-U get statused, (AC) as it hates all forms of it; paralysis limits it ability to wallbreak, burns cripple its Attack, (AC) and poison stacks with Life Orb to wear down Hoopa-U very quickly. Dark Pulse is usually a safe move to use, especially on this set because as it can switch moves against Pokemon that try to pivot into a locked move.

Team Options
========

Choice Scarf Victini is a good teammate to deal with for Bug-types and to revenge kill faster Pokemon and does well against faster types like Fighting, and it appreciates Hoopa-U's wallbreaking power so it can sweep late-game. Alakazam shares similar checks to Hoopa-U, (AC) so it also appreciates Hoopa-U's wallbreaking as well.

Moves
========

Hyperspace Hole is one of the biggest selling points of Hoopa-U for Dark teams, as it lets them hit Fighting-type Pokemon super effectively. It is especially nice against Substitute Keldeo, (AC) as it goes through Substitute and can revenge kill it effectively. Energy Ball as an optional coverage move that can be useful as a move with no drawbacks against Water-type teams, easing prediction with its dual STAB moves. It can also be used to more reliably break through the Hippowdon + Gastrodon core on Ground teams. Drain Punch is an optional move that can be used over Focus Blast to more reliably hit Dark-type Pokemon, notably OHKOing Tyranitar, but it misses out on Skarmory and Klefki. Trick is an option to cripple walls, but this set loves all of its coverage moves, (AC) so it is hard to fit.

Set Details
========

Maximum Speed with a Hasty nature is used to make Hoopa-U as fast as possible; a Hasty nature is preferred over Naive because Hoopa-U can utilize its Special Defense stat whereas its Defense is so low that a negative nature barely affects it. 116 Special Attack EVs guarantees the OHKO on Keldeo with Hyperspace Hole, and the rest is dumped into Attack to boost the rest of its Hoopa-U's moves. Choice Scarf makes Hoopa-U faster than the unboosted metagame and lets it revenge kill Pokemon like Keldeo, Infernape, and Mega Heracross.

Usage Tips
========

While this set is able to check Fighting-types, do not switch directly into them, (AC) as Hoopa-U has bad Defense. Be careful of switching into status moves as well also, as paralysis heavily cripples this set and burns prevent Hoopa-U from using its strong STAB Hyperspace Fury. Use this set to revenge kill Pokemon like Keldeo, Mega Gardevoir, (AC) and Tornadus-T. Hyperspace Fury in general is a very nice STAB move to use freely.

Team Options

**Psychic**: (colon)

Choice Scarf can be a tempting option for Hoopa-U on Psychic teams, but Psychic has access to a lot of Pokemon that can utilize a Choice Scarf more effectively, like Victini, Latios, and Gardevoir. Psychic generally appreciates the wallbreaking ability provided by Hoopa-U much better. Nasty Plot is very hard to set up and Choice Specs almost always does better, but it can be nice in some matchups, particularly against stall variants of Water teams. Hoopa-U can use a set of Substitute, Dark Pulse, Hidden Power Fire, and Drain Punch to devastate Steel-type teams, but such a set is very matchup dependent, (AC) as it is near useless in many other matchups. It fits on Psychic teams that are very weak to Steel-type teams, however. Niche items like Assault Vest and Focus Sash could be used—the former to check Chandelure and Meloetta better, while the latter can be utilized with Magician, though Hoopa-U usually prefers other items.

**Dark**: (colon)

Thunderbolt can be used to hit Mandibuzz, but this set has troubles giving up any of its coverage moves. A fully special Choice Scarf set can be used, but Hyperspace Fury generally makes physically inclined sets better, as it has much more immediate power and boasts feats such as OHKOing Mega Gardevoir after Stealth Rock. Hoopa-U can use Choice Specs, Choice Band, and Life Orb to boost its power, but these items lose Hoopa-U's main niche of checking Fighting-types with Choice Scarf. It provides nearly nothing synergistically for Dark teams, and Hydreigon is usually better with these items, (AC) as it provides better defensive synergy and is faster.

Checks and Counters
===================
**Psychic:** (colon outside)

**Faster Pokemon:** (all these colons go outside) Because Hoopa-U's speed is mediocre at best and it has due to its terrible physical bulk, it is very easily forced out by most offensive Pokemon, like Victini, Landorus-T, Mega Medicham, and Weavile.

**Priority:** (outside etc etc. i'm not going to write these anymore but you get the picture) Hoopa-U's low physical bulk makes it susceptible to strong priority moves like Dragonite's Extreme Speed, Bisharp's Sucker Punch, (AC) and Mega Scizor's Bullet Punch. (AP)

**Status:** Hoopa-U loathes paralysis because of its frailty and cannot effectively switch into Ghost-type moves if worn down by poison or burn damage. Mixed and physical sets especially dislike burn, (AC) as they cripple Hoopa-U's Attack.

**Mandibuzz:** Sets lacking Thunderbolt are walled by Mandibuzz, who which can 2HKO Hoopa-U with STAB Foul Play. (AP)

**Dark:** (outside)

**Faster Pokemon:** Because Hoopa-U's speed is mediocre at best and has due to its terrible physical bulk, it is very easily forced out by faster Choice Scarf users, like Victini, Landorus-T, Jirachi, and Terrakion.

**Priority:** Hoopa-U's low physical bulk makes it susceptible to strong priority moves like Dragonite's Extreme Speed, Bisharp's Sucker Punch, (AC) and Mega Scizor's Bullet Punch if Hoopa-U has taken prior damage. (AP)

**Status:** As this set relies on the Speed boost from Choice Scarf, paralysis neuters Hoopa-U due to its low Defense. Burns also cripple Hoopa-U, (AC) as it is then unable to utilize its strongest STAB move to its full potential.

**Mixed Walls:** Since this set's damage is not boosted by an item, mixed walls like Porygon2, Chansey, and Alomomola are able to switch into Hoopa-U and wall it.

**Mandibuzz:** Sets lacking Thunderbolt are walled by Mandibuzz, who which can 2HKO it with STAB Foul Play. (AP)

Furthermore, while Hoopa-U can utilize all three Choice items effectively, if it does not use Choice Scarf, it is quite slow for a wallbreaker and finds itself being outsped by most offensive threats, (comma) and if it does use Choice Scarf, it trades its middling speed for a very noticeable lack in power; however, Hoopa-U's sheer wallbreaking potential solidifies its spot onto most balanced Psychic teams.

Moves
========

Dark Pulse is Hoopa-U's primary STAB move, as it is powerful and has no drawbacks. Psyshock is another very strong STAB move that hits specially defensive Pokemon and is also very strong; it is able to 2HKO Chansey after Stealth Rock damage and can also 2HKO specially defensive Zapdos and Lanturn where Dark Pulse cannot.

Set Details
========

Usage Tips
========

========

Moves
========

Set Details
========

Maximum Special Attack and Speed with a Jolly nature makes Hoopa-U as strong and fast as possible, and Choice Band lets Hoopa-U OHKO many offensive threats with its extremely strong STAB moves.

Usage Tips
========

This Hoopa-U set is mainly used over Choice Specs due to its stronger greater immediate power with its STAB Hyperspace Fury; therefore, use it early- and mid-game and use this move freely to wallbreak.

========

Slowbro is in a similar vein, as it has access to paralysis as well; in addition, it has great physical bulk that complements Hoopa-U's special bulk (cleaner but still kinda optional + double check content) nicely, and it can take weaker U-turn and Knock Off aimed at Hoopa-U.

Moves
========

Set Details
========

Maximum Speed and a Hasty nature are used to make Hoopa as fast as possible. Hasty is preferred over Naive because Hoopa-U can utilize make effective use of (kinda optional ig but less awkward) its Special Defense stat, whereas its Defense is so low that a negative nature barely affects it.

Usage Tips
========

This set has the benefit of being able to switch moves, making it very effective against Dark-, Water-, and Steel-type teams, where it can often be difficult to choose the right move. Since this set has Life Orb, it is not the best switch-in to Ghost- and Dark-type moves because of the recoil. Don't let this Hoopa-U get statused, as it hates all forms of it; paralysis limits it ability to wallbreak, burns cripple cut its Attack, and poison stacks with Life Orb to wear down Hoopa-U very quickly. Dark Pulse is usually a safe move to use, especially on this set because it can switch moves against Pokemon that try to pivot into a locked move.

Team Options
========

Moves
========

Energy Ball as is an optional coverage move that can be useful as a move with no drawbacks against Water-type teams, easing prediction with its Hoopa-U's dual STAB moves. Trick is an option to cripple walls, but this set loves all of its coverage moves, so it is hard to fit.

Set Details

Maximum Speed with a Hasty nature is used to make Hoopa-U as fast as possible; a Hasty nature is preferred over Naive because Hoopa-U can utilize make effective use of its Special Defense stat whereas its Defense is so low that a negative nature barely affects it.

Usage Tips
========

========

Tyranitar sets up Stealth Rock and appreciates Hoopa-U's ability to get rid of Fighting-type Pokemon. Mandibuzz can absorb U-turn and most physical attacks for Hoopa-U.
