Monotype STABmons Mega-Thread

Some stuff stolen from original STABmons thread.

Welcome to the STABmons Monotype Mega-Thread!

Banner by Dream Eater Gengar

This thread hosts the discussion, viability rankings, and sample teams for the metagame
First of all, what is STABmons?
STABmons is the metagame where Pokemon have access to moves that match their type even if they can't normally learn them! Take Sableye, the Pokemon in the logo above. Besides all its usual moves, now it can learn all Dark and Ghost moves as well. This also applies to Pokemon that change type(s) during evolution. So for instance Eevee is a Normal-type and when it evolves it carries those Normal moves with it to all its Eeveelutions.
What are the bans and clauses?
STABmons follows the OU banlist, plus these bans and clauses:

  • These Pokemon are banned:
    • Diggersby
  • These items are banned:
    • Aerodactylite
    • Altarianite
    • King's Rock
    • Metagrossite
    • Razor Claw/Fang (the King's Rock clone)
  • These moves are only legal on Pokemon that learn them naturally:
    • Belly Drum
    • Chatter
    • Dark Void
    • Geomancy
    • Lovely Kiss
    • Shell Smash
    • Shift Gear
    • Sketch
Cool, so what is Mono STABmons?

The Monotype metagame is, exactly as the name implies, a meta where you must build a team with each Pokemon sharing a common type, STABmons is the metagame where Pokemon have access to moves that match their type even if they can't normally learn them! (For Example: Greninja may now learn parting shot, origin pulse, etc.) STABmons Monotype combines these two elements for a new, fun tier!

Monotype STABmons Banlist
In addition to the standard STABmons bans, Pokemon that are deemed too strong for the metagame are manually banned. i.e. the Border Line Pokemon from standard tiers. These bans are overseen by the Mono STABmons council.
Council:
We have a council of 4 very experienced mono STABmons players. We will vote on what will or will not be banned. While you may give your opinions on why something is or isn't ban-worthy prior to the council's decision, decisions made by the council are final unless the council is convinced otherwise and you may not complain about the council's decision in the thread. If you think something ought to be banned or unbanned, contact me or one of the other council members with your concerns and we will take them into consideration. These are the council members:

Council logs:1/4/2016: Stabmons Monotype has banned Scizorite but kept Lopunnite and Greninja roaming in the tier!

A simple twist on just another HO Fighting mono team. Usually weaken walls with Mega Medi and CB Terrakion to let Hawlucha and Keldeo sweep late game. Has a hard time versus Psychic and Fairy and has a slight disadvantage against Ghost.

Got 2nd place in a roomtour with it. It's pretty good to show off the capabilities of Mono STABmons Normal.

Monotype Stabmons Suspect Test Results

The council has recently suspected three Pokemon that deemed broken in Mono Stabmons, Scizor-Mega, Greninja, Lopunny-Mega. We at the council have voted and stated our opinion regarding each suspected terror, thus agreed unanimously the Ban of Scizorite, and kept Lopunnite and Greninja.

Scizorite: From a Monotype point of view, thanks to it's bulk, typing and ability, Mega Scizor already finds itself used as a primary killer against rock, fairy, ice types which it can take by some bullet punches but that doesn't grant it the chance being banned. In STABmons, Scizor gets new toys in Shift Gear and Gear Grind which comes extremely powerful viewing it's technician ability which powers up Gear Grind. Thanks to this powerful combination of bulk and shift gear, Mega scizor finds itself being able to take on said types weak to it and adding to that others, just as normal, dark and psychic. Due to it's capability of dismantling a bunch of teams easily I'm going to vote Ban on Scizorite.

Greninja: Greninja was banned due to it's expansive movepool and unpredictability mixing with it's ability in Protean and an amazing speed tier. That doesn't change in STABmons as it gain new moves such as Origin Pulse and Knock Off. But what makes Greninja less threatening in STABmons? The fact that it doesn't gain as much as other Pokemon which are enjoying wider movepools and could run other unpredictable moveset, adding to that to prominent priority which cripples Greninja as it has mediocre defenses. Thus, making Greninja on borderline and not broken in STABmons, voting No Ban.

Lopunnite: Thanks to STABmons this Pokemon with a great typing and speed tier has access to Extreme Speed which is extremely helpful revenge killing scarf Pokemon, it has also access to Sword Dance which boosts it's attack making it a scary threat and the combo of High Jump Extreme Speed lets it hit everything at least, neutrally. It's only downside is it's mediocre defensive stats but that doesn't holding back at being a big threat to lot of times. I'm going to vote on Ban.

Scizorite: Ban
Greninja: No Ban
Lopunnite: No Ban

Scizorite: Ban
Greninja: No Ban
Lopunny: No Ban

Greninja: This thing isn't bad at all without dark void and every type and their mother having access to a boatload of priority:no ban
Scizorite: Seeing this things power is kind of scary lol rock, fairy, ice instantly lose to this and can't do anything about it ban
Now, normal has access to shitload of FakeSpeed users with Braviary, Diggersby, Lopunny, and if fakespeeding were to be too op, Diggersby would definitely be the one that breaks it. don't ban lopunnite

Happy Banning! :toast:

Approved by scpinion

Welcome to Mono STABmons second suspect test! Sorry for disappointing the majority and saying it's not an UU one. Due to recent complaints concerning Normal being too broken in the current STABmons the council has decided not to suspect the type itself by a Pokemon that is deemed broken: Mega Lopunny. Reasoning are that this Pokemon is blessed with an amazing new moves to toy with such as Sword Dance and Extreme Speed, let's not forget its secondary typing that allows it hitting everything that resists it. In addition, scrappy allows Mega Lopunny to even hit ghost types. This Pokemon finds itself being able to set up easily on the opponent due to support moves in Lovely Kiss or Encore which combined with powerful wallbreaking stats is dangerous for the metagame. BUT this time we're going to let the community decide alongside the council. We are going to host a series of Suspect Tours that will allows user that reach the finals to be able to vote in the suspect. The tours are going to be hosted in the Monotype room right after the 8 AM EST and 8 PM EST Official Tournaments so be there! To confirm yourself reaching the finals please take a screenshot and send it to me via inbox on Smogon. The deadline is Sunday 28th February. Hope to see you on the battlefield!

*You don't need to win the tour, just reach finals.
*The council vote will be counted as 2 while yours will be counted as 1.
*Mega Lopunny will be banned in the suspect tours.
*The Council has the right to add new suspects alongside Mega Lopunny to balance the metagame.

People that are eligible to vote:

average fella
Scyther NO Swiping
BlackJak
Disbelief
AV8
Wanka
Tidal Rage
dusk raimon
MegCham
Rhythms

QuillWill
*I will collect vote when the suspect tours are over.

Hi, I'm requesting a change from Mega Lop suspect to a Normal type suspect. Everyone who has played in MonoPL agrees that Normal is an insanely broken type, and the tier is basically running Normal or teams that c-team Normal such as Fighting & Rock. Normal v Normal is decided by 1-2 speed ties, and from what I've seen in my MonoPL games, Normal requires 0 skill to use (Click Boomburst / Extremespeed whenever you can. If you can't KO the switchin, go to 1 of your 3 walls then click Baton Pass as your opponent switches out and get another free kill. This is even easier than Generic Flying,,,).

You say banning Mega Lop will solve the problem but it won't. Mega Lop was dangerous in OU STABmons because of its speedy Lovely Kisses and Swords Dances, but everyone's running FakeSpeed to check other Lops when other FakeSpeeders will do the job just as well (Braviary, Kanga, Snorlax etc), and you actually just indirectly buffed Normal because Pidgeot can't touch Chansey, and there's no Mega Lopunny to break the P2/Chansey/Raptor core. People will start to run Ditto so they can copy w/e sets up, and Normal just becomes "whoever can copy the +2 first and weaken P2 + Staraptor wins!"

So yeah, please make STABmons fun again. Games where 3/6 turns is either Boomburst or Extremespeed is boring

I completely second Anttya
I effortlessly ran through a tour today with a normal team without Mega Lopunny, and the type is still incredibly overpowered.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/stabmons-335742633
Here are the replays against good battlers who were drafted in MPL, and I absolutely bodied them with this overpowered nonsense.
I don't think banning Fake Speed would fix the problem either, because many types also have access to it, and it seems the only overpowered type is Normal.
I BEG you to ban this type, it is extremely overpowered and completely disrupts the balance of the metagame.

completely agreed, there was a tournament today (so with Lopunnite banned) and i took steel vs normal. Normal wins easily. They have plenty haxxed moves, like No guard Mega Pidgeot Sing, Transform/Glare/Baton Pass Chansey (glare can paralyze Ground Types should i mention), FakeSpeed Ursaring, Snorlax and most broken of all: Porygon Z. Access also to Boomburst, a 140 power move with perfect accuracy and no drawbacks, coupled with Porygon Z ability or Meloetta high Special Attack, and with Scrappy Pokemon, this is a hard move to switch into except for steel types (and normal run fighting types moves, making steel uneffective to beat them) Even with Steel having access to King's Shield, which doesn't stop parahaxxing moves, it's really hard to beat normal, so for the other types....

I just ask for a pure ban of this type, to make the Monotype STABmons balanced again.

Banned deucer.
I would be lying if I would say that Mono Normal in STABmons is not a very powerful type, because lets face it, it is. STABmons just favors Normal types immensely due to the metagame giving access to moves such as Boomburst, Extreme Speed, Swords Dance, and Judgement. It really boosts the viability of certain mons greatly, basically giving any Normal mon the ability to become an offensive juggernaut. But we also have to understand that the nature of STABmons is that it makes everything uber offensive, as we have certain types such as Steel, Dark, Flying, and Fighting that are also extremely threatening to face as well as they have access to moves such as Shift Gear, Dragon Ascent, Close Combat, Sucker Punch, Knock Off, etc... Mono STABmons is quite scary to face as well don't get me wrong, but its not this extremely offensive type that pushes all other types to obscurity and does not have any downfalls. The matchup with Steel and Ghost can be very biased if you do not have the certain move or mon remaining, and that running total offense can also be a detriment as well, leaving your team extremely open to other slightly offensive teams. To me, Mega Lopunny is the real issue at hand with Mono Normal, and if Shell Smash, Belly Drum, and soon to be Lovely Kiss were all not banned, then maybe I can see Mono Normal being banned, but I feel that taken this route is to vague and exaggerated of what the real issue is.

I just propose something, if instead Normal Type ban, we ban moves who make normal broken, wouldn't it be netter? I mean, ban moves like Boomburst and Espeed from Normal type only would be a huge nerf for this type.

Edit: I think some replays would be good to show it, so I'm working about give some replays:
• Against Deg's water: http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/stabmons-337122611
• Against Deg's Dark: http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/stabmons-337130818
• Against OmniaX's Flying: http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/stabmons-337134833
• Against Anttya's Fire: http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/stabmons-337243991

I think Normal type doesn't need the ban but the specific ban moves.

From an implementation perspective, I would really like to ban Pokemon, mega stones, or types to balance these metagames. Those are significantly more transparent to the general user (which is a legitimate concern imo) and much easier for me to code into TLM so it can check the battles for us (which is not that big of a deal).

Well, if it's to difficult to you to code this and so, can't have this alternative, I think Anttya and Ridley's solution is the best.
Boomburst/Swords Dance +Extreme Speed spam isn't healthy.

But isn't Greninja unbanned?
We wouldn't be able to use Diggersby regardless as the format has banned it. Greninja is allowed as far as I know as it can't really benefit from many moves, and the playing field is more leveled off.

No, STABmons actually follows the OU banlist now.

even with extreme speed banned, diggersby stays a really dangerous threat since its fake out cut already 50% hp on many pokemon and can finish with its Quick attack instead of Extreme Speed (just less powerful though). It also gets Precipice Blades as secondary STAB and plenty of support moves to use. Keep it banned.

PS: STABmons kept Diggersby banned btw.
