As war in Kalos escalated, human forces were proving not enough. When the enemy began to use Pokemon in their armies, Kalos had to fight back; in the rank and file of their Pokemon forces were Pawniard, and, more rarely, Bisharp. Centuries later, Lancelot was once a lowly Pawniard with no future other than roaming the streets and getting into fights. Caliber saw the vision in the Pawniard's eyes; its desire to live freely without needless violence. Seeing the honor in the small Pokemon, Caliber gathered it for his mission. Lancelot soon grew to be a noble Bisharp who only fights when bound by honor.

Caliber found him in the wild, and, after telepathically communicating, promised the child he would take him to his family. Despite his past, Gawain is constantly full of positive energy, and can be hasty, but only has good intentions.
