Mr. Mime (QC 3/3) [GP 2/2]

Mr. Mime

[Overview]

When people think of mimes, they usually think of those black and white figures who go around mimicking one's every move. For those who hates mimes, this is your lucky day, as in the world of competitive Pokemon, it is Smeargle who fulfills this role. Mr. Mime is a Pokemon with good Special Attack and Special Defense stats that are complemented by its decent base 90 Speed stat. Mr. Mime also has access to a wonderful move in Baton Pass, thus allowing it to support its teammates effectively. It also has a nifty ability in Soundproof, which makes it immune to sound-based moves, such as Roar, thus making it a staple on lower tier Baton Pass teams. Speaking of Baton Pass, the mime has a myriad of boosting moves to pass on to its teammates, including Nasty Plot, Calm Mind, and Barrier. Mr. Mime can also frustrate the opponent through the use of Taunt and Encore, both of which stop the opposition from trying to set up on Mr. Mime. Sadly, all these gifts come at the cost of having pitiful HP, Attack, and Defense stats. Mr. Mime's Psychic typing also leaves it vulnerable to Pursuit, allowing Pokemon such as Krookodile to make mince meat out of it. Despite its flaws, Mr. Mime is still an amazing Baton Passer that can set up for its hungry teammates quite easily.

[SET]
name: Baton Pass
move 1: Nasty Plot / Calm Mind
move 2: Baton Pass
move 3: Substitute / Barrier / Taunt / Encore
move 4: Psychic
item: Leftovers
ability: Soundproof
nature: Timid
evs: 252 HP / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

This set capitalizes on Mr. Mime's niche in the RU environment: Baton Pass. Nasty Plot allows Mr. Mime to easily set up its teammates for a sweep, granting them a +2 Special Attack boost. With Nasty Plot, Mr. Mime can easily Baton Pass a +2 Special Attack boost for its teammates to sweep. Calm Mind only boosts Special Attack only by 1 stage, but also boosts Mr. Mime's Special Defense, thus allowing it to nab more boosts against special attackers. Calm Mind should always be the move of choice on teams with long Baton Pass chains. In the third slot, Substitute is the preferred move since it lets Mr. Mime scout, block status, and set up more easily on weaker Pokemon who are unable to break the Substitute. Substitute is especially useful with Calm Mind, as the Special Defense boosts can help the Substitute survive special attacks. Barrier lets Mr. Mime boost its dismal Defense stat, allowing it to better take the hits of from Pokemon such as Hitmonchan; it also helps against priority moves. Encore can be used to punish opponents trying to set up on Mr. Mime, and gives it a free turn to set up. Taunt can fully stop the opposition from setting up, and can also stop opponents from trying to phaze Mr. Mime away with Whirlwind. Soundproof blocks Roar, and has the added effect of stopping moves such as Bug Buzz from hitting Mr. Mime. The last slot is granted to Psychic, which prevents word Mr. Mime from being Taunt bait. It also allows Mr. Mime to keep an offensive presence, especially after boosts from either Nasty Plot or Calm Mind.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The EVs give Mr. Mime as much bulk and Speed as possible. Mr. Mime can also use Psyshock in place of Psychic in order to defeat special walls, such as Munchlax, but Psychic is usually preferred since it deals more damage to the majority of RU Pokemon. Mr. Mime can also use Charge Beam in that slot in an effort attempt to nab a Special Attack boost; Technician is the preferred option if using Charge Beam, especially since Roar isn't very common in the RU metagame. Also, due to its Psychic typing, Mr. Mime greatly appreciates the removal of Dark-types, such as Krookodile, so Fighting-types make great partners for this set. Mr. Mime can also utilize Baton Pass to escape opposing Dark-types with Pursuit; this is especially helpful if Mr. Mime is carrying Substitute. Mr. Mime also needs partners who can capitalize on the boosts provided to them, so Pokemon such as Omastar and Rotom are great teammates.

[SET]
name: Nasty Plot Sweeper
move 1: Nasty Plot
move 2: Baton Pass
move 3: Psychic / Psyshock
move 4: Focus Blast
item: Leftovers / Life Orb
ability: Filter
nature: Timid
evs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Unlike the previous set, this set takes a more offensive approach. Nasty Plot is the premier move of this set, allowing Mr. Mime to boost its Special Attack stat by 2 stages, thus allowing it to become a force to be reckoned with. Baton Pass lets Mr. Mime pass off its boosts to its teammates, and stops it from being a sitting duck against Dark-types, such as Honchkrow. Baton Pass also sets Mr. Mime apart from other Nasty Plot users, such as Jynx. Psychic is the main STAB move, but Psyshock can be used instead in order to decimate special walls, such as Munchlax and Lanturn, who have poorer Defense. Focus Blast has superb coverage in tandem with Psychic, allowing Mr. Mime to nail the opposing Dark- and Steel-types who resist Psychic. Life Orb grants Mr. Mime more power, but Leftovers can be used if the Life Orb recoil is a problem. Filter is the ability of choice on this set, as it allows Mr. Mime to take less damage from super effective attacks that could otherwise OHKO it.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The EVs maximize Mr. Mime's offensive capabilities, making full use of its good Special Attack and decent Speed stats. Substitute is an option over Baton Pass in order to block status, and can be especially useful against Honchkrow, as it lets Mr. Mime a Sucker Punch. However, it generally makes Mr. Mime inferior to other Nasty Plotters users, as Baton Pass is Mr. Mime's main selling point. Hidden Power Ice with 60 Base Power or Icy Wind, with Technician as the ability, could be used in place of Baton Pass, but again, it makes Mr. Mime completely outclassed by Pokemon such as Jynx. Encore is in the same boat, although it eases set up. Thunderbolt can be used over Focus Blast, but it leaves Mr. Mime walled by threats such as Steelix and Krookodile; Charge Beam is in the same boat yet another viable Electric-type option, but can also potentially nab a Special Attack boost for Mr. Mime. However, note that Technician is the preferred ability if using Charge Beam.

This variant of Mr. Mime greatly appreciates hazard support, as hazards let it nab many more KOs. Therefore, partners such as Qwilfish and Omastar are greatly appreciated. Fighting-types, such as Hitmonchan, are also great teammates since they can eliminate Pursuit users, such as Krookodile, for which threaten Mr. Mime. Special Attackers, such as Rotom-C, that can fully take advantage of the Nasty Plot boosts provided by Mr. Mime are also great partners.

[Other Options]

Mr. Mime has a wide array of other options, especially since it has access to Technician. 60 Base Power Hidden Power Ice, Fire, and Fighting, are all usable viable options. Hidden Power Fire lets Mr. Mime decimate the likes of Ferroseed and other steel-types, while Hidden Power Ice gives it a solid move to nail Mandibuzz in addition to Grass-types. Hidden Power Fighting is a more accurate, albeit less powerful, version of Focus blast, which can be used if Focus Blast's low accuracy is off-putting. Icy Wind, Magical Leaf, and Charge Beam are also options with Technician. Thunderbolt, is a more powerful version of Charge Beam that can let Mr. Mime hit Mandibuzz harder, while Shadow Ball is an option that can let it hit enemy opposing Psychic-types harder super effectively.

Trick can be used with a Choice item in order to severely cripple opposing walls, but Mr. Mime's Psychic typing and frailty makes a Choice set much less effective. Hypnosis can be used over Baton Pass on the Nasty Plot Sweeper set, but this leaves Mr. Mime utterly outclassed by Jynx, who has access to the more accurate Lovely Kiss. Mr. Mime can also utilize either Confuse Ray or Teeter Dance, but both of these moves are unreliable. The mime also has access to dual screens, but this is usually better left to Pokemon such as Uxie. Although Mr. Mime can utilize Trick Room, Pokemon such as Duosion who can make immediate use of it are usually better for the job. Finally, Mr. Mime has access to Healing Wish, which allows it to sacrifice itself for one of its teammates, but it is usually better off using Baton Pass.

[Checks and Counters]

Mr. Mime is almost impossible to counter since it can flee the battlefield with Baton Pass. However, it is very easy to check. Dark-types are the bane of Mr. Mime's existence, especially of variants lacking Focus Blast. Honchkrow can force Mr. Mime to Baton Pass out, while Krookodile can trap and KO it with Pursuit. They both must be wary of Focus Blast, however. Entei can deal massive damage to Mr. Mime with its priority ExtremeSpeed, decimating those without a Defense boost from Barrier. Munchlax can wall all variants of Mr. Mime that lack Psyshock, while Mandibuzz can wall those lack Thunderbolt. Bug-types, such as Crustle and Scyther, can threaten Mr. Mime and force it to Baton Pass out, but they must be wary of boosted attacks. Sharpedo is also a good check to Mr. Mime, but has to look out for Focus Blast.

Thanks!
Also, implemented Windsong's suggestion (IRC) of emphasizing Baton Pass since it is really the only thing that Mr. Mime has over other Nasty Plotters. It now has the main slash over Substitute.

Unlike the previous set, this set takes a more offensive approach. Nasty Plot is the premier move of this set, allowing Mr. Mime to boost its Special Attack stat by 2 stages, thus allowing it to become a much more threatening force force to be reckoned with. feel free to change it (that sentence sounded weird :/ it sounds like saying it's a threat to begin with :x) Baton Pass lets Mr. Mime pass off its boosts to its teammates, and stops it from being a sitting duck against Dark-types,<comma> such as Honchkrow.
The EVs maximize Mr. Mime's offensive capabilities, making full use of its good Special Attack and decent Speed stats. Substitute is an option over Baton Pass in order to block status, and can be especially useful against Honchkrow, as it lets Mr. Mime "benefit" when Honchkrow uses Sucker Punch avoid a Sucker Punch while behind a Substitute.
