Nature, IV, and Hidden Power Combinations for Legendary Pokemon

Nature / Hidden Power / IV Combinations for Legendary Pokemon

Okay, this project is an undertaking in order to both document and present to the public a listing of all relevant IV spreads for legendary Pokemon in order to achieve a specific Hidden Power type. Some combinations of IVs and Hidden Powers are not even legal, so it is both necessary and valuable to have this sort of documentation for the average user.
IVs are posted in the form of: HP / Atk / Def / SpA / Spd / Spe
Trick Room spreads seem unnecessary because those sets are very specific, and the optimal IVs required for them (if Hidden Power is involved at all) are listed in the set comments for that Pokemon.

Introduction

In many cases for competitive Pokemon, using a Pokemon with the maximum in all IVs is either suboptimal or altogether impossible. A ubiquitous scenario would be when the Pokemon needs a specific Hidden Power type in order to obtain a very specific coverage move. Furthermore, a lower HP stat can sometimes reduce Stealth Rock damage taken or facilitate the creation of five Substitutes in a row with Leftovers recovery. As if to make things worse, some legendary Pokemon are unable to have certain IV spreads, making it even more difficult to find the right combination of IVs that are both legal with a certain nature and yield the desired type of Hidden Power. This article was created in order to facilitate the process of finding the right IV spread for your Pokemon, regardless of the nature or Hidden Power type you need. Note that only competitively useful combinations are given in the tables below.

As mentioned above, sometimes you need your Pokemon to have fewer HP IVs in order to take less damage from Stealth Rock or create more Substitutes. For this reason, viable IV spreads with possible combinations of 30 HP and 31 HP are provided. If a set has more than two IV combinations, or two of equal HP stats, it is because there are completely different combinations that can be used, each of which are useful in their own way.

Finally, you will notice that many of the following IV combinations yield very low Attack stats. These low Attack stats are useful for specially offensive Pokemon so that they take less damage when they are confused and hit themselves. Separate spreads are provided for each Hidden Power type and each relevant nature with the highest possible Attack IV as well as the lowest.

I am not sure tailoring this exactly to existing analysis is the way to go. Of course, we know that the HP Dragon is always going to be useless, but things like trick room are (in my opinion) likely to be used. Especially for SB2 when there are double battles. Really, I just think it would be a good idea to have a comprehensive list of legal spreads.

As for event Pokemon, depends on which event. 4th generation wondercards should not have any restrictions at all. Anything that capturable in XD/Colo should also be struck from the list.

Also, what about the other useful natures?

I was hoping to catch KD on irc to discuss a few things before he went and before I posted, but oh well. He was suggesting organising the HPs by tier not nature, we compromised on having the info listed but the main ordering by nature. I'm up for doing quite a few more spreads, but am not sure if a "comprehensive" list is useful to make people wade through all the pointless spreads, or worth the effort. Some natures are simply not going to be used on a HP wielding Legend, and some HP types are pretty much never going to be used whatsoever. With 8 natures and 8 types for each, it should catch everything that will be competitively used on a non gimmick team.

I would have thought TR would be worth it for a few natures, but looking at the legends who use Trick Room or 0 Speed IVs (a grand total of Dialga, Uxie, Heatran, maybe Mesprit).. none of them bar Heatran have much real use for Hidden Power on those sets which use TR. Celebi and Jirachi are mentioned as TR settupers in the TR guide, but they will be using supportive sets probably without 0 Spe and almost certainly without Hidden Power. I guess doing some Quiet natures for Heatran (and really odd TR Offence Celebi) makes sense, but that's all that is competitively relevant.

As for event Pokemon, depends on which event. 4th generation wondercards should not have any restrictions at all. Anything that capturable in XD/Colo should also be struck from the list.
Really? Currently shoddy has the the same restrictions for Pokemon from XD/Colo, wondercards, caught in the wild and everything. Its just a blanket IV/nature restriction on all legends. If that is not right, shoddy should be changed.

iv spread: 31/11/31/30/31/30 Replace existing with this, order again.
iv spread: 31/22/30/30/31/31 (1 Def lost to get 1 Spe)

Any 30 HP spreads I have missed are forced to lose points in other stats other than Atk to keep the same type/power, so have been ignored.

Thanks Xia, and could someone with the power to do so change the big bold writing at the top to:
If you would like to help finding legal IV/Nature spreads please contact eric the espeon or KD24 on irc or by PM. This will help avoid duplication of effort.
and maybe make it a bit less massive. I don't really see why people should not help with this, I will probably be going over their spreads anyway, but someone has contacted me already asking to help.

Edit:
For Modest HP Grass, 31/2/31/30/31/31 could be added.

Edit2: Got together a list of HP using legends for use in the "analysis like" bits if we are using them. Will post exactly what spreads they should use in the subjective changes thread at some point.

Sets:
Mixed attacker Giratina-O HP Fire+ Lonely/Naughty (2nd/)
Jirachi Timid + Fire (1st)
Shaymin-S HP Ice Timid/Modest (1st/), HP Fire Timid/Modest (2nd/)
Latias HP Fire + Timid/Modest (2/3rd/)
Regigigas Modest + HP Ice (1st)
Darkrai HP Fire + Hasty / Naive (3rd/)
Deoxys HP Fire + Rash/Naive (2nd/)

Deoxys-A HP Fire + Hasty (1st)
Uxie Bold + HP Fighting
Latios Timid + HP Fire
Suicune HP Electric + Timid/Modest
Azelf Timid + HP Fighting, Naive + HP Ground
Heatran has an Hidden Power IV section already.
Zapdos HP Ice/Grass + Timid/Modest/Calm/Bold (really could do with a HP/IV section)
Entei HP Ground + Timid (normal spread legal, but to be even more nitpicky 14 Atk is better) / Naive, HP Ice (2nd/) / Grass (3rd/) + Timid
Celebi HP Fire + Bold/Calm/Modest/Timid, HP Fighting + Modest/Timid, HP Ice + Timid/Bold. Really could do with a HP/IV section.
Raikou has a HP IV section
Moltres Modest with HP Fighting/Grass/Ice
Shaymin HP Fire/Ice Modest/Timid, HP Fire Bold

OO/minor set comments mentions:
Deoxys-D HP Fire/Calm
Giratina-O HP Fire/Modest
Regice Calm HP Fire/Ground
Jirachi Timid + HP Ground
Uxie HP Ice + ?
Azelf HP Ice + ?
Zapdos HP Fight/Flying + Timid/Modest/?

Really? Currently shoddy has the the same restrictions for Pokemon from XD/Colo, wondercards, caught in the wild and everything. Its just a blanket IV/nature restriction on all legends. If that is not right, shoddy should be changed.
Wondercards allow for any combination of HP and IVs due to how their IVs and nature are generated from separate RNGs. Pokémon Colosseum and XD have different RNGs from all the handheld games, of which we do not have a good understanding. However, we do know that they allow for nature and IV combinations different from the GBA games (I can confirm this from the capture of my own XD Pokémon, which do not validate under X-Act's IV to PID applet). Maybe this will be fixed in Shoddy Battle 2, but it would be a limitation of Shoddy at the moment that these Pokémon are not exempt from the restrictions set on most legendaries.

For your convenience, the Pokémon that are currently on your list that would actually be exempt in either their Wondercard iterations or caught in the GCN games are as follows:

Articuno
Zapdos
Moltres
Raikou
Entei
Suicune
Lugia
Ho-Oh

Mew
Jirachi
Deoxys
Deoxys-A
Deoxys-D
Deoxys-S
Regigigas
Manaphy
Darkrai
Shaymin
Shaymin-S
Arceus

Articuno
Zapdos
Moltres
Mew
Raikou
Entei
Suicune
Lugia
Ho-Oh
Jirachi
Deoxys
Deoxys-A
Deoxys-D
Deoxys-S
Regigigas
Manaphy
Darkrai
Shaymin
Shaymin-S
Arceus

Note that Arceus is only legitimately available through Wondercards at the moment, and both it and Regigigas have restrictions on how their EVs may be distributed on account of being obtained at level 100. I do believe this list is comprehensive, but please check these lists to make sure that I have not missed any Pokémon. I am unsure of how the third generation events' IVs and natures work, so I do not know if Celebi should technically be exempt or not.

Given the above lists, the Pokémon that always have their nature and IV combinations restricted are those listed below:

Mewtwo
Celebi
Regirock
Registeel
Regice
Latias
Latios
Kyogre
Groudon
Rayquaza
Uxie
Mesprit
Azelf
Dialga
Palkia
Heatran
Giratina
Giratina-O
Cresselia

I do believe that these lists, or something to their effect, should make it into the article somehow. It is also worth noting that only in their above iterations (i.e. Wondercards, Colosseum/XD) are the Pokémon free from restrictions. For example, while Colosseum Suicune has no restrictions on its IVs and nature, most people will likely be using HeartGold/SoulSilver Suicune, which does have the aforementioned limitations.

mingot set me up with the OP so I can now integrate your contributions (and the rest of mine), and will do soon, thank you both.

Arceus, that is very interesting and shows that shoddy is actually using the restrictions on far more Pokemon than it should be.

Indeed; the nature-IV restrictions actually apply to only a small set of Pokémon, but from a practical standpoint (ie. for the cartridge player), many of these "exempt" Pokémon are not the most common form. For example, nine times out of ten, Articuno will have its IVs restricted, because it is all but impossible to obtain a good Articuno through Pokémon XD, where it is not restricted (or its restrictions are different, but unknown), or the Suicune example in my last post. This applies mostly to the Pokémon I listed under Colosseum/XD.

On this note, I neglected to mention that Latias and Latios may be exempt as well, depending on how third generation event Pokémon restrictions pan out. They were given out at JAA like Celebi, though this is not going to be their "most common form"; HeartGold and SoulSilver is likely going to be preferable for the Latis, whereas Celebi is pretty rare in-game, but will likely be given out via Wondercard soon anyway if the new movie and that one event in HeartGold/SoulSilver are any indicator. So the Pokémon that may or may not have their IVs restricted, which I did not previously list separately, would be as follows:

Celebi
Latias
Latios

If we're being really comprehensive, the Regis were given out in Japan in September 2005. So they would also fall in the limbo of third generation events:

Celebi
Regirock
Regice
Registeel
Latias
Latios

Again, this is mostly theoretical, and applies mostly to Shoddy (or Shoddy 2, if these Pokémon have their IVs restricted currently) players. For the intents and purposes of a cartridge player, these Pokémon will, as I mentioned, have their IVs restricted nine times out of ten. This is especially the case for these event Pokémon, which were given out in limited quantities, and are exponentially less likely to have quality iterations roaming around in the hands of competitive players (if at all) than other versions. Celebi maybe has a good version in the cartridge of some Japanese player somewhere.

I hate to keep throwing suggestions at you, but I do believe that some note should be made of this in the article, especially since we are attempting to be more open to the in-game players with the in-game section and all. A cartridge player can easily get a good Articuno from Platinum or HeartGold/SoulSilver, but they will still be working around nature-IV restrictions; for them, some of these unrestricted Pokémon are interesting from a predominantly theoretical standpoint.

Great stuff Arceus, I will include that info in a "what this matters for" section. Seems like it should help players, so may as well.

Made a little start at integrating stuff, checked and added Alakapimp's Timid spreads, with a few changes:
30/26/31/31/31/31 is a better Timid Dragon 30 HP spread
30/12/31/31/30/31 is actually a 68 BP spread, not 70
Added 30/3/30/31/30/31 as Timid HP Ghost 30 HP spread
Added 30/19/31/30/30/31 as Timid HP Ground 30 HP/31 Spe spread

Edit: Checked and added the rest of ala's spread, with a couple of fixes.

EDIT: Unfortunately, I was incorrect. While some spreads do repeat, they aren't the same every time for two spreads.

On a happier note, all of the Calm spreads have been reworked so Attack is at its lowest. I'll be going on and doing Modest now.

Not every spread behaves this way. I've seen Timid spreads mirror Bold, Modest, and Lonely, for example. Or Modest <-> Timid/Calm/Docile.

It is true that spreads have mirrors, but there are two or three different possibilities per nature.

Sorry about that, and thakn you for correcting me Eep; apparently I got very lucky when choosing which spreads to test. =P

The hidden Modest spreads in my post are also finished.

I've passed this onto Rising Dusk, I would have liked to do this but have too many other commitments/distractions to get it done in a reasonable timeframe. He has been set up with the OP.

Is it just me, or do a lot of them don't work?

With naive, I ended up with HP rock. It was meant to be fire. Also, the alternate formes don't register as a need for special IVs on shoddy.

I will be going through the entire list to verify these this weekend. It's entirely possible that a lot of the listed IV combinations do not work, and I intend to weed them out.

It's fine, it's not in order as displayed on Shoddy Battle but rather HP/Atk/Def/SpA/SpD/Spe. On Shoddy Battle, it displays HP/Atk/Def/Spe/SpA/SpD.

iirc I checked each spread (other than maybe some of Xia's) myself before adding them to the OP (which is fairly time consuming, and why this fell on my priority list) so there should not be errors. It is possible that one or two slipped through the cracks, but the example you found (and probably all the others you had trouble with) was simply because you missed the "IVs are posted in the form of: HP / Atk / Def / SpA / Spd / Spe" in the OP as SM64 pointed out.

I have updated the first post with a bunch of new IV combinations and have totally verified every single IV spread in the original post. (A lot more work than it might sound like) Anyway, I am going to have to do the Mild IV spreads now unless someone else wants to pipe up and help me out with them. I will hopefully have these spreads done by the end of the day or tomorrow or something around there.
