Currently into:

Metallica, all albums, fuck the haters. I maintain there is a good song on each album, and all but one is worth purchasing/ dling. Ride is still the best, always will be.

Megadeth, rust in peace and peace sells particularly. I got into thrash through the black album, so I'm exploring megadeth for the first time now.

Iron Maiden, Bruce era. New stuff isn't too appealing, but powerslave is awesome as ever.

Judas priest, killing machine and earlier. Just heard hell bent for leather, and it is insanely addictive to listen to.

Stuff I'm into right now:

Odious Mortem (Death metal)
While Heaven Wept (Epic doom metal)
Pathosray (Progressive metal)

And I consider some metalcore and deathcore to be metal, along with deathgrind, goregrind and pornogrind.

Holy Grail's "My Last Attack" harkens back to something, just I can't place it. Catchy fucking tune. Powerglove has just beeen lulzy, and the Musicianship and Musicality of Becker and Townsend have just been more interesting lately.

sleep are a great band and everyone should like them.

not really into any particular metal at the moment really. i just got through a few doom albums; shit like electric wizard, acid king, mortalicum and stuff.

so far 2011 is looking good and i've got a decent list of stuff i'm looking forward to. so far i have acid witch's stoned which i quite enjoyed, earth's angels of darkness, demons of light i which is also pretty good, and merkabah's lyonesse live ep which i have been waiting for for a while and is also pretty good.

Just spent the past few hours traveling and this was my playlist:

Bongripper - Hippie Killer
Angelcorpse - Exterminate
Inquisition - Nefarious Dismal Orations
Dead Congregation - Graves of the Archangels
Bolt Thrower - Those Once Loyal, Realm of Chaos

good shit

this is not metal

so far all I've heard from 2011 is The Destroyers of All by Ulcerate and Parasignosis by Mitochondrion, and both were fantastic. 2011 is gonna be a good year

No love for Dream Theater? They're the best progressive metal band out there, even though Portnoy left :(

dream theater masturbate their instruments too much, but they are pretty good. i would never go as far as saying they're the best prog metal band though, especially with shit like cynic, tool and nevermore around.

This isn't meant as an insult or anything, but do you play an instrument? I'm honestly just curious.
yes, in fact I just posted about it in the musical instruments thread

As an aside, I do actually like Liquid Tension Experiment. And by "like", I mean I used to listen to them a lot but I haven't in probably over a year, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt that I'll still like them because I usually don't stop liking music that I've enjoyed before. ANYWAYS, I do think they're all very talented musicians, but god damn dream theater cannot write a song to save their lives.

i like Images and Words, Awake, and about half of Systematic Chaos from Dream Theater. that's about it.

also all of you probably already know these dudes but Cryptopsy's Blasphemy Made Flesh and None So Vile albums are so goooooooooooooood

Glen, Sleep are all right, but I do not really see them as distinguishing themselves much from every other doom and gloom thudding band like them. I guess I could be wrong I only gave them a once over, at least it was good enough I did not delete it though.

Well I was listening to When the Water Breaks or whatever it is called yesterday, and I still liked it perfectly fine. The bands I have dimmed on in regard to my level of affection are ones like Stratovarius where there is genuinely almost no talent being displayed and really poor composition, no matter how much I like the sound. Dream Theater had good good composition and talent no matter how masturbatory and wanky they were, at least through 2002, and Liquid Tension Experiment was a fine side project.

I'm really hoping that Dream Theater will move away from the increasingly generic metal sound now that Portnoy left the band. If they play their cards correctly, then everyone in the band will contribute. And if they don't, then the next album will be completely penned by Petrucci and very little will have changed.

sleep are a great band and everyone should like them.
I love Sleep, but I wouldn't consider them to be a "great band." They wrote the most laughably bad lyrics I've ever heard and some of their compositions were just awful.

Case in point: "Dopesmoker" - a droning song that has a tendency to repeat one riff for minutes on end. It's "fun" (as "fun" as listening to an hour long almost-drone-doom song can be) to hear every once in a while and I love Matt Pike's solos, but it's a terrible composition. And I don't think I even have to say anything about the lyrics. Throw some of those wonderful solos into "From Beyond" and that's about as long as a Sleep song should last.

Umm, idk, Dream Theatre just wont be the same without Portnoy :(
But then again, I said that about the new A7X album and it was AMAZING :D
However thats probably because it was Portnoy was replacing the "Rev"

There is literally nothing interesting about Dream Theater. The songwriting is very... lacking, shall we say.

Based on their first two albums I would say Cryptopsy is a really uneven band. On the one hand their musicianship is solid, particularly the drumming, which is some of the best in extreme metal. But the vocals can be pretty underwhelming at times, and the production on Blasphemy Made Flesh is incredibly disappointing, almost distractingly so. They sort of struggle to be terribly relevant to me when I could be listening to Gorguts or something, but I still give them a spin occasionally.

What exactly about The Glass Prison or Fatal Tragedy are lacking? They might not be the most perfectly composed songs ever, but they seem to have plenty of details and fairly tight compositions.
