Field Type: Normal

Format: Singles

Upon your match's acceptance, you receive directions to the new ASB League Normal Gym via e-mail. As it would happen, this gym resides in a small, recently constructed live theatre built in Slateport City. One way or another, you make your way to this bustling city. Crowds of people line up in the city to see the contests, the Oceanic Museum, and...you do not see a line near the Four Seasons Theatre like you expected. Upon closer examination, the glass doors seem to be locked, with a "Closed" sign hanging from the door. Confused, you check your map again, but see that this is where the Normal Gym is supposed to be. So where is everyone?

As you turn to leave, the door opens behind you, and a Kalos looking man in a grey fedora comes out and motions you inside. Once the two of you are inside, the man begins "Hello there, the name's Xavier. I know you're here for the Normal Gym run by Maxim correct? Sorry I didn't leave the door opened, I wasn't expecting you for another ten minutes! Sadly, Maxim couldn't be here, he has gone on a business trip; one that has absolutely nothing to do with a miiiinor inconsequential breakdown that he may or may not have experienced. So, I'm taking over as gym leader in his stead until he gets back. Don't worry, we've filled out all the necessary paperwork with the Gym League...probably."

"So, without further ado, let me welcome you to the Normal gym!"

"Before we get started with the match, let me introduce you to the rules. Pay attention here, as it is similar, but different from, the previous incarnation of this arena following some renovations from yours truly. First, moves will have their standard priority regardless of the circumstances. Basically speaking, things like Prankster and Stall have no effect here. Second, apart from the aforementioned abilities and similar, all abilities cannot be affected by the combatants. That means stuff like Skill Swap, Trace, and the like will not work here. Third, as normal, if a Pokemon is forced out by a Phazing move or Red Card, the affected trainer will be able to switch to whatever they want. Finally, we have banned a few moves here, namely Imprison, Electrify, and Ion Deluge."

"With that done, let's forge onwards towards liberty!" the man says, then the curtains open, revealing...no audience. "Oh right, we sorta haven't opened to the public types yet. That's okay though, we have cameras to record the match if we need them! Let's fight!"

Summary:

  • Priority of all moves must be kept as Normal in the Normal gym. This means that abilities and items that affect the priority of moves will have no effect in the arena.
  • All Abilities must be kept as Normal in the Normal gym. This means that abilities cannot be swapped, copied, disabled, or rendered unable to be used at any time, with the exception of Abilities affected by the first rule.
  • If a Pokemon is forced out by a Switch-Forcing Move or a Red Card, that Pokemon's trainer can choose which Pokemon goes in next.
  • The moves Electrify, Ion Deluge, and Imprison will fail when used in this arena.
Codifications:

  • Camouflage turns the Pokemon into a Normal Type.
  • Secret Power has a 30% chance to Flinch.
  • Nature Power summons Tri Attack.

Oh, hello there. You are probably wondering what I'm doing outside the Hoenn International Airport with a very irate looking actress and no luggage besides what we were able to stuff into some old backpacks. Then again you are probably wondering who I am at all, Maxim always seems to skip that part. I am Arthur, you may have heard of my work in Sinnoh stopping the universe from being destroyed? No? Figures, the government was always keen to hide my role in that. You see, nowadays I am employed by the International Police, working undercover in order to seek out criminals all across the world. All while performing as a stage magician for Maxim's shows.

But I think I should back up a bit. You see, my "employer" Maxim is a rather...curious individual. He was the one who stopped Team Plasma a while back during King N's big fiasco. As such he's a respected trainer, though not as famous as you might think. After defeating N, Maxim put most of his money into the stock market, which had briefly gone down after Team Plasma's attack (region ending catastrophes tend to have that sort of effect) and went on a world wide search for N, trying to talk him back to his senses. He never found the guy, but when he got back about three years later, he was astounded to realize that the stocks he had placed earlier had skyrocketed in price, and thus he found himself in a much higher tax bracket than normal. Not super wealthy, but wealthy enough to start up a business with his interest in the finer arts of life, also known as the Crescent Troupe, of which I am a part. We travel throughout the world performing various types of odd acts, with Maxim playing a few roles.

More recently, he got into the Anime Style Battling League, and managed to somehow impress enough people to get in as the Normal Gym Leader. Unfortunately, with it he's become...considerably more eccentric. Or perhaps it just magnified his already considerable eccentricities. Regardless, he ended up obsessing over winning, and revamped his arena a couple of times (his first arena actually wasn't connected to the Crescent Troupe, but after a Team Plasma member caused it to explode, he decided it would be more economical to use the theatres). Over time though, he started making more and more boneheaded plays, and due to his lack of skill and forethought, he came across a rather horrendous losing streak. Last week, he lost his mind, demanded that his opponent seek him out in New Mauville, and then left a scathing letter at the end without the gym badge. Very unprofessional.

"Hey, are we going or what?"

That girl is the aforementioned irate actress, Terra. She was the one who stopped Team Plasma's second attempt to take over the world, and is very adept at using Ground types. The two of us had decided to chase after Maxim for different reasons. To Terra, it was primarily a monetary investment. You see, she was an actress of some renown, making her way through PokeStar Studios and their B movies making a modest income. Eventually, she got a lucrative contract with a high end studio and was set to become a high end actress. However, due to some "egregiously shady contract negotiations" she ended up forced to PAY them to act in movies that were mostly limited to chick flicks and the like. This left her penniless and her career was left in shambles after one of said movies bombed. As such she was stuck living in her mother's basement until she met Maxim, who offered her a job at the Crescent Troupe. Thus far she has enjoyed the work, and wants to avoid losing it again.

As for me, I am simply in it to keep my cover identity safe. Sure I could do fine as a "traveling magician", but airplane flights are expensive, and I'd rather Maxim footed the cost. Rather miserly of me I know but it's a job.

"Yes I am coming. Are you sure you are up for this Xavier?"

On the cell phone was Xavier, the space case from Kalos that you may have heard other stories about. Xavier has agreed to stay in Hoenn while Terra and I try to find Maxim and drag him back to the gym so that we are not all facing financial ruin. Well, except Xavier I suppose. Unlike the rest of us who got zilch for saving the world, Xavier has become a virtual celebrity in Kalos, though due to his quirky nature he's not well respected outside of there. More than likely he makes most of his money doing advertisements and the like, and this is a fun little side distraction. I am actually not sure why he joined, but he joined soon after the explosion of Maxim's Origin Stadium, though an extensive background check has ensured that his appearance after that was coincidental. He has agreed to help, I suppose because he's just nice like that.

"Relax, Maxim's Pokemon and Gym will be fine with me. You can count on it! Best of luck you two."

Oh yes, I haven't explained one crucial detail. One odd thing about the Crescent Troupe is that all the members share their Pokemon in a pool. Typically one has to have permission to use another's owned Pokemon, but in this case since Maxim's mind is out to lunch and we are doing him a favor, we've decided to circumvent that in the name of pragmatism. Normally, the system works quite well (just don't trust that Dusknoir of Maxim's, trust me). Once I hear Xavier's confirmation though, I head into the airport, confident that we'll find him soon and get this whole mess over with.

This better not turn into one of those wild goose chases.

"Hmm...is that all?"
