OU Omastar

[OVERVIEW]

While not necessarily the best Swift Swim sweeper for a rain team in the OU metagame, Omastar is unarguably the strongest, boasting the highest Special Attack and possessing one of the best setup moves in the game, Shell Smash. These traits allow it to fire off truly devastating Hydro Vortexes with a Z-Crystal. With a Shell Smash boost, even the bulkiest of Water-resistant Pokemon, such as Assault Vest Tangrowth, Amoonguss, and Ferrothorn, must be completely healthy to have a hope of surviving Omastar's Hydro Vortex. Even Chansey, one of the best blanket checks to special attackers in the metagame, has difficulty handling Omastar. Omastar is a premier breaker for rain teams, as it is great at demolishing checks for its fellow rain attackers like Kingdra and Ash-Greninja.

However, unlike Kingdra and Mega Swampert, Omastar is unable to outspeed common Choice Scarf users like Keldeo and Garchomp with just the Swift Swim boost, and it even falls short of very fast unboosted Pokemon like Mega Alakazam. For it to have any hope of sweeping on its own, it usually must acquire a Shell Smash boost, which is often easier said than done. Furthermore, due to its poor Special Defense, it is vulnerable to opposing Water-type attacks, most notably Ash-Greninja's Water Shuriken. For this reason, Omastar pairs best with Kingdra, which has a double resistance to Water-type attacks that is invaluable for taking rain-boosted Water Shurikens.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Shell Smash is Omastar's most important move, as it gives Omastar the speed to outspeed all Choice Scarf users and the power to blast through bulky Water-resistant targets. Hydro Pump is Omastar's strongest Water-type attack, and its shaky accuracy is less of a problem when it can be used as a Z-Move. Earth Power is used for hitting Toxapex and gives a 100% accurate option against targets like Heatran and Gengar. Ice Beam is primarily for Grass-type targets like Tangrowth and Amoonguss and allows Omastar to conserve its Z-Move against them; it is also helpful against targets like Zygarde and Garchomp. Finally, Ancient Power allows Omastar to hit Mantine and gives it a 100% accurate option against Mega Charizard Y, but it does little else.

Set Details
========

Omastar needs all the power and Speed it can get, thus maximum Special Attack and Speed EVs are used in combination with a Modest nature. Swift Swim is essential to performing on a rain team, and Waterium Z allows Hydro Pump to be used as a Z-Move.

Usage Tips
========

Omastar relies heavily on rain being up, so prioritize keeping it up for Omastar and its teammates. Omastar is best used not for sweeping but for blowing away checks to the Water-type attackers it's best paired with. Shell Smash is key to getting the power and speed to truly threaten a team, but often Omastar won't be able to get the boost for free, so you must weigh the risk and reward of using Shell Smash or just firing off an attack. Since many targets that Omastar is supposed to be able to break have Giga Drain, getting a KO is important or else the target can heal as much as a third of their health back while KOing Omastar.

Team Options
========

Omastar is only viable on a rain team, thus Pokemon essential to rain teams are obvious teammates. Pelipper has access to Drizzle and should always be paired with Omastar. Mega Swampert and Kingdra are both very threatening Swift Swim sweepers; however, Kingdra pairs with Omastar better, since its double resistance to Water-type attacks is valuable for handling Ash-Greninja. Ash-Greninja is also quite viable on rain teams and can serve as a fellow Water-type attacker. An Electric-type attacker is a good pick for rain teams due to their powerful, 100% accurate Thunders under rain; Tapu Koko often fills this role. Ferrothorn is a good utility Pokemon on rain teams due to its ability to lay entry hazards and handle opposing Water-type attackers. Ferrothorn is also a tough Pokemon for rain teams to handle, so they must have a good answer to it; Mega Heracross is a seriously threatening Pokemon that handles Ferrothorn effortlessly, and Keldeo also works to threaten Ferrothorn, take advantage of the rain, and check Ash-Greninja.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Surf is a 100% accurate, less risky Water-type STAB move, but it's not as valuable because Hydro Pump can be used as a more powerful Z-Move; the power drop is quite substantial. Hidden Power Grass hits Gastrodon but nothing else. Life Orb can be used over Waterium Z if your team's Z-Move is used elsewhere, but at that point you're better off not using Omastar. Omastar can also accomplish an entry hazard lead set on non-rain teams, laying Spikes and / or Toxic Spikes while getting boosted Speed from Weak Armor to usually guarantee two layers; this set can also use Scald and Knock Off to annoy the opposing team.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Bulky Grass-types**: If Hydro Vortex has already been used, bulky Grass-types such as Tangrowth, Tapu Bulu, Ferrothorn, and Amoonguss can check Omastar, but they still take a lot of damage from Ice Beam.

**Bulky Water-types**: If Hydro Vortex has been used, bulky Water-types can beat Omastar with rain-boosted Scalds. Good choices are Toxapex and Tapu Fini, although Toxapex must watch out for Earth Power. Gastrodon is an especially good answer because it has an immunity to Water-type moves, and it beats any Omastar that does not have Hidden Power Grass. Mantine is similarly a good check, since it is also immune to Water-type moves, but it must watch out for Ancient Power.

**Ash-Greninja**: Choice Specs- and rain-boosted Water Shuriken KOes Omastar if it lands at least three times in Greninja's base form and always if it has activated Battle Bond.

**Weather Setters**: Mega Charizard Y, Tyranitar, Mega Tyranitar, and Alolan Ninetales all beat unboosted Omastar by removing the rain with their abilities. None really like switching into Omastar, however.

**Chansey**: Chansey is able to beat Omastar one on one if Hydro Vortex has already been used, but otherwise, Omastar can use Shell Smash twice and OHKO Chansey with Hydro Vortex.

OVERVIEW
-Respectably high defense
Rather unnecessary since Shell Smash will leave it pretty soft.

You're also way too negative on Omastar in the Overview. I would try to find a way to balance its pros and cons at the very least. After all, Shell Smash + Swift Swim makes Omastar very hard to outspeed outside of priority and Hydro Pump still hits hard after a boost.

Looking further into this, the analysis is missing some information. Example A:
-Shell Smash boosts its power to
-Substitute eases prediction and gives it a buffer against
and some of the information is SUPER vague.

Tag me when you update this a bit more Sergeant Spooky

groundinium earth power or icinium ice beam is better to kill rain checks like toxapex or tangrowth.
you wont need waterium to ohko anything with hydro pump.

and why sub? you will never use this. every turn in rain you will attack, basically. shell smash is already hard to use at times. put 3 attacks
+2 252+ SpA Omastar Hydro Vortex (185 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Assault Vest Tangrowth in Rain: 329-387 (81.4 - 95.7%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
+2 252+ SpA Omastar Hydro Vortex (185 BP) vs. 4 HP / 252 SpD Eviolite Chansey in Rain: 466-549 (72.5 - 85.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+2 252+ SpA Omastar Hydro Vortex (185 BP) vs. 252 HP / 168 SpD Ferrothorn in Rain: 346-408 (98.2 - 115.9%) -- 87.5% chance to OHKO
+2 252+ SpA Omastar Hydro Vortex (185 BP) vs. 248 HP / 16+ SpD Tapu Fini in Rain: 325-383 (94.7 - 111.6%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO
+2 252+ SpA Omastar Hydro Vortex (185 BP) vs. 232 HP / 80 SpD Venusaur-Mega in Rain: 363-428 (101.1 - 119.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

At +2, it completely destroys conventional rain checks.

I used Substitute in a metagame where Toxapex wasn't considered the best Pokemon in the game. Substitute is very unreliable right now because you want to either Shell Smash predicting a switch or attack what is in front of you. Might as well have Earth Power so you can break specially defensive Toxapex. Nice for AV Magnezone and not risking miss versus Heatran. Also, Ancient Power should be backslashed after Ice Beam. I would rather have a consistent move against Tapu Bulu while not having to waste my Z-Move to break Latios and Zygarde (the latter which is everywhere). Mantine is rising in usage which is why it gets a slash over mention in Moves / Other Options.

Also, you are going to have to flesh this out a hell of a lot more Sergeant Spooky. Saying it's weak to common moves is not something you put in the Overview. What should we know about Omastar? What makes Omastar unreliable? Let me throw some points in here for you.

[Overview]
Pros:
- Omastar breaks conventional rain checks, making it a solid partner to Kingdra and Ash Greninja (you have this).

Cons:
- It exposes rain teams to Ash Greninja which is fucking shit (once again, you have this but I would stress this more).
- No mention of being outpaced by Choice Scarf Keldeo and dependency on Shell Smash?

[Shell Smash]

Set Details:
- Mention why you need Modest as in look at the calculations I provided above.
- "Additionally, lowers damage from Knock Off and prevents being tricked a Choice item." <---- this point is irrelevant

Usage Tips:
- Shell Smash on shit you force out and analyze risk-reward since I've lost my Omastar many times because of how obvious Shell Smash is

Team Options:
- Please have Ash Greninja here
- Please have Ferrothorn!

[C&C]
"**Chansey**: Really fat but takes huge damage from hydro vortex, is otherwise one of the only things that can survive +2 Hydro Vortex."

Remove this. If it decides to switch-in then you gave Omastar another Shell Smash aka a free kill, possibly 2-3 more if it isn't paired with Unaware Clefable.

edit: Weak Armor Hazard Lead in OO please

  • Mention some conventional rain checks that Omastar is able to muscle past in the overview
  • Mention in set details the advantages of running Timid > Modest if there are any significance
  • Change the *Greninja* section in C&C to *Ash-Greninja* considering it is the only Greninja that runs Shuriken
  • Remove Slowking from C&C
  • Mention Chansey in C&C, considering that Omastar needs to be at least at +2 AND not have already used Hydro Vortex in order to touch it, otherwise Chansey can usually 1v1 it.

Implemented.

I looked at the speed tiers and I don't see any reason why you'd want to use Timid. Most are sub-101 scarfers that people don't use anymore and trashmons. +2 Celes is the only noteworthy threat but pretty much every other rain attacker can deal with it except Mega Swampert. I don't see why you'd ever give up the power boost from Modest.

In team options, stress teammates that remove or beat ferrothorn. This is especially important on rain teams because they have a tendencies to be walled be Ferrothorn and that is just bad.

QC 2/3.

Ps please update your title.

Overview

I really want to correct one small thing. While Kingdra definitely is a damn good partner with Omastar, I think if you have Ferrothorn or AV Growth alongside Omastar you're probably fine. Ash-Greninja is also a really strong partner with Omastar because it just fucks the living tar out of Ash-Greninja checks. I definitely agree that Omastar doesn't really pair well with Mega Swampert, so I'll concede that.
Ice Beam is primarily for Grass-type targets like Tangrowth and Amoonguss, but is also helpful against Zygarde and Garchomp
Mention that Ice Beam can also conserve Hydro Vortex if needed if Tangrowth and Amoonguss are weak enough after Omastar has Shell Smashed since they're normally your Hydro Vortex targets.
Finally, Ancient Power allows Omastar to hit Mantine, but does little else.
Also hits Zard Y, though Hydro Pump can OHKO the 100% accuracy is nice to fall back on. I would just note that.
Timid is an option that allows Omastar to revenge kill Automotize Celesteela while in the Rain, but is otherwise a poor choice over Modest
I'd just scrap Timid tbh.
**Bulky Waters-types**: If Hydro Vortex has been used these can beat Omastar with Rain-boosted Scalds. Examples are Toxapex and Tapu Fini. Gastrodon is an especially good answer to its immunity to Water moves, and beats any Omastar that does not have Hidden Power Grass. Mantine is similarly a good check since it is immune to Water-type moves, but must watch out for Ancient Power.
Mention that Toxapex has to be careful of boosted Earth Powers as well.
**Weather-Setters**: Mega Charizard-Y, Tyranitar, and Ninetales-Alola all beat Omastar, if it didn't get a chance to boost, by removing Rain. None really like coming in to Omastar, however.
Just add Mega Tyranitar in here too.

Even Chansey, the bane of all special attackers one of the best blanket checks to special attackers in the metagame (something similar works too. "bane of all special attackers" doesn't really tell the reader too much about what chansey does. in general there's a lot of cliched phrases like this throughout the analysis, so I think one thing you need to keep in mind is that telling the reader exactly what you're talking about is more important than sounding fancy), has difficulty handling Omastar.
