ORAS-CV Test (Completed)

Alo everybody. With the recent release or ORAS, the CAP metagame has seen an influx of amazing Pokemon, and what better way to determine their viability than have the first ORAS CV Test. The versatility and viability of CAPmons and new Megas alike will be put to the test, and researching and recording new trends brought out thanks to ORAS will help the CAP community write up new analyses to help make CAP a fun environment for all types of players. However, because of the influx of new mons, the meta now has so many underutilized GOOD Pokemon, so the Pokemon we test need to have a substantial impact on the metagame. This means the goal is test out which Pokemon now have what it takes to be great in the meta, and we're not aiming to research mediocrity. The basic format of this CV Test will be similar to a Dark Horse Tournament of the past, but the daily battles will be sped up and the goal is to focus on analyzing the changes brought to the CAP meta through ORAS.

Overview/Rules: There are multiple stages of play within the CAP Viability Test, and points will be rewarded to individuals who are successful at each stage. The point status will be gathered and listed in this thread, so feel free to test your metal and aim to grab one of the top spots on our leader board. Of course, the main goal here is to have fun and explore some new things in the CAP Metagame.

The first stage, which is more focused on fleshing out pre-competition objectives, is the nomination step. Users may suggest Pokémon in or above a viability ranking of B- to be tested out in the competition. In addition, all new megas are viable candidates as well. The Viability Ranking thread is available here. All nominations should be submitted in bold text, in a similar fashion to any voting for the CAP Project. Each day,two of the Pokemon previously nominated in the thread will become the featured Pokemon of the day, and the day will focus on their testing (read more in the paragraph below). Please keep all nominations as reasonable as possible. If you submit a Pokemon that ends up being ranked C+ after the competition is over, you’re not going to die; but if you submit trash/irrelevant pokes like Jynx, well… just please don’t. Tada might shoot you on site.

After nominations comes the play stage. Once the day's two Pokemon candidates are declared, participants and users have 24 hours to make a team using one (or both) of the day's chosen Pokemon. If a user is able to win 2 qualifying ladder matches using the day's Pokemon plus 2 additional matches against a room voice or higher ranked individual (this one doesn't have to be a ladder match), then he/she is allowed to post his/her replays to this thread. After being reviewed, if the replays stand up, the user will gain 1 point to be added to their point standings. Anyone is allowed to participate, and you can only earn one point per Pokemon. However, if you are super dedicated, you can earn up to two points every day if you play with both of the candidates for the day. Furthermore, in order for your matches to qualify, there are some additional rules:

-You must use the one of the day's listed candidates on your team in both of your ladder victories, and in your 2 battles against a user of room authority. You may change teams and moves, but the usage of the same Pokemon is required in all 4 matches submitted. If you are using both candidates on a single team, you will not get double points unless you submit double the matches.
-You must submit replays to this thread as proof for all 4 matches.
-You must, at some point in the battle, use the candidate out on the field.
-Instant rage quits or questionable time outs will NOT count as legitimate matches and will not qualify. However, stuff like a turn 15 rage quit after you knocked out 3 of the opponent's Pokemon probably will count, as long as the day's Dark Horse candidate was able to have some screen time.

Each day for the first 5 battle days of the DHC there will be two new candidate Pokemon to test out on your teams, so be sure to check the thread for updates. In addition, you are encouraged post a short reason why you think your suggested Pokemon lives up to a rank of B- or higher. You should post it in the viability ranking thread, which was hyperlinked earlier.

After the first 7 battle days are up, participants and CAP forum goers are allowed to vote on which of the discussed mons will likely have the strongest impact upon the CAP meta. Votes shall be cast using a strawpoll link as to prevent the thread from being clogged up. Voting will last for 2 days, and voters are encouraged to review replays to gather information on how well the candidates did. The 4 candidates with the most votes will become the Pokemon of the Month, and will be featured in the month's tournament.

After the first two phases have been complete, sign ups for the CV Tournament will be in open. To sign up, reply to the thread with the bolded phrase "I want to sign up for the CV Tournament" and then PM (inbox) the team you will be using to Animus Majulous. If it is found that your team deviated during tournament play from the one you submitted, then you will be disqualified. Everyone entering must have at least one of this month’s voted ORAS CV Testmons on their team in order to participate, and you certainly welcome to use more than one.

Sign ups will end after a few days, and shortly afterwards a bracket will promptly be posted. Each round will last only 24 hours, so if you're a participant be sure to contact your current opponent right away to schedule a time to have your battle. Whether you win or lose, both participants in each match are expected to reply to the thread to declare the result. Additionally, each user is to PM Animus Majulous a link to the replay of the match in the off chance of a dispute (and to verify that your team has not changed). Please do not post tournament replays in this thread, as it leads to team scouting.

The winner of the CV Tournament will receive 10 points to be added to their point total, whereas the runner-up will receive 5 points and 3rd and 4th place both will receive 3 points.

Overall Schedule for the ORAS CAP Viability Test:

20-23rd: Nomination. You are eligible to nominate as many Pokemon as you want as long as they are not God-tier mons like Sunkern (they have to be decent and have a preliminary ranking of at least B-; if they drop its OK).

23-31th: (excluding Christmas): Daily Battles, in which a new Dark Horse Candidate will be declared every day. Participants have 24 hours once the day's candidate is declared to gain 5 eligible ladder victories using the candidate Pokemon and to post their replays to this thread.

1-2nd: Voting will be open for the Dark Horse candidates, with votes cast on the external straw poll link provided. Voters are encouraged to review replays and vote for the Pokemon that they believe will have the biggest impact/greatest chance to succeed in the CAP metagame.

3rd-4th of the new year: Sign Ups for the tournament open. Be sure to reply to the thread and to PM your team to the tournament manager.

5th of January: First Round of the tournament.

6th of January: Second Round of the tournament.

7th of January: Third Round of the tournament.

Etc, until all rounds are completed and a victor is named. Afterwards, we will spend some time analyzing all the candidates at a critical level.

This Thread: Within this thread, users are allowed post replays for daily candidate battles if they are trying to show proof of their victories. Additionally, people are allowed to comment on battles found in the battle log, and in general have conversations about how successful the candidate Pokémon actually are within the CAP Metagame. Furthermore, suggestions for mandatory Pokémon at the daily level are allowed as long as you back up your post with solid reasoning. Suggestions will be taken into consideration, but not all suggestions will automatically filter through.

However, this thread is not the place to cast votes for any polls, as otherwise things would become too cluttered. Instead, use the provided strawpoll link at the top of this post to cast votes when voting becomes available.

Additionally, at the end of a tournament, users are encouraged to assess and analyze how well the CV pokes performed, and there will be a rough "conclusion" of sorts that will try to offer insight in to how viable the candidates were, which flaws hindered them in the tournament play, and which traits helped them succeed in turn.

Hopefully, our first ORAS CV Test will not only be a great success and fun event for all who join, but a boost for our viability and analyses endeavors. We await your participation.

Mega Sharpedo

Ima bite ya

Mega Sharknado is my nomination. Honestly I have no idea why more people don't use this thing. With his new ability, he hits extremely hard with Crunch and Ice Fang becomes viable, too. Even things that should be hard counters to him can run into trouble thanks to his coverage, and he can fairly reliably KO a Cyclohm with 50% HP or less (which is impressive since Clohm is the premier physical wall in the game). Furthermore, he essentially gets one free turn of speed boost, which lets him outpace the majority of the meta with ease.

Jesus, you may as well name it Hep-B or AIDS test, this sounds scary. Also....
Diancie (Mega)
RP plus a bone to pick with Tomo make it an extremely viable sweeper. Its coverage and ability to successfully run mixed sets help too.

Gengar

Despite its solid A- ranking, Gengar is criminally underused in the CAP metagame, getting less usage than quality mons such as Ambipom and Donphan. It has plenty of different support options and movesets to function as a Stallbreaker, and can also act as a solid Special Attacker with Life Orb.

Starmie

Some people would say why in the world use this thing in CAP? Starmie has a nice 115 speed, and two useful abilities, natural cure and analytic. Specs can make it a decent wallbreaker, and analytic can help it punish some pokemon on the switch in. Starmie also has a versatile movepool that could possibly make it dangerous. I'm quite surprised it is unranked

Mega Swampert

This guys is probably the greatest thing rain could have asked for this gen, giving rain reams a solid answer to Mollux, Zapdos, Cyclohm, Krilowatt, and Electric Types in general, which where huge obstacles for CAP rain offense in XY. Its also hits crazy hard in the rain and can easily roll over frailer offense teams, and can dent a good number of walls. Despite this apparent buff to rain offense, its still rarely seen in the CAP meta, and by extension, neither is Mega Swampert. Is there still some major flaw I'm missing to rain offense and Mega Swampert, or have we just not fully realized how effective they are?

Greninja

This thing is a beast. It takes down the CAP Trinity of Tomo, Clom and Colo. It has 4MSS, but that also means you aren't 100% sure what it's running. It has great speed and a good SpA to boot, and a godly ability in Protean which allows to get STAB on all of its moves. And not only that, but ORAS gave it Low Kick and Gunk Shot, which allows it to hit a load of new things along with the old stuff, most notably Colo and Fairies. On top of that, VoltTurn, which Ninja really likes, got better this gen, which means now it can have even moar fun.

But most of all, I already have a team with it in. Laziness FTW

well darn, heaL took my first choice :(
so I guess ill go with my second choice

Mega Gallade

well I have always liked gallade and so its mega naturally made me happy, but in cap I think this thing is even more viable then it is in ou. As it out speeds and hits colosoil and tomo super effectively and with its ability to take psychic and fighting attacks it can work together well with colo and tomo as well. And its great movepool allows it to fulfill some extra coverage you might need. Plus I already have a team for it XD

Plasmanta

Plasmanta is the only brand new mon brought to us from ORAS, and he has great special attack and passable speed. He can--wait, what's that you say? Plasmanta wasn't crafted by GameFreak and isn't in ORAS? How strange, because I could swear he became playable just as PS updated the ORAS mons... hmm...

Mega Lopunny

Mega Lopunny may seem sub par in a Tomohawk infested metagame, but its one of offenses best revenge killers. It can handily check Stratagem, Syclant, Greninja, and a whole slew of other fast frail mons that give offense teams a run for their money. It has trouble getting past dedicated walls, but Scrappy High Jump Kick and Return give perfect neutral coverage, allowing bunny to run anything from Fake Out to Baton Pass to Healing Wish in its last two moveslots. High Jump Kick also hits incredibly hard, for example, it can ko Mega Diancie after a Fake Out, which is great.

Mega Altaria

Mega Altaria is one of the new fairy type sweepers in CAP, and it does a pretty good job in that. It destroys the three main CAP Pokemon of Colossoil, Tomohawk and Cyclohm, while it's absolutely great coverage in Fire Blast, Heat Wave, and Earthquake takes out Heatran, Mollux, Cawmodore and Skarmory which would otherwise wall it. It can also run defensive sets with its amazing defense to wall things. It may have trouble with some of the new megas, but the number of Pokemon In CAP weak to its coverage, and the number of things it can wall, makes it carve out its own niche in CAP

Gonna go ahead and nominate a bunch of stuff as there is still a relatively small pool of mons nominated. Get ready for some Mega spam

Lets start with the new stuff first.

Mega Sableye

Mega Sab is, for what ever reason, unranked in the viabilty thread atm. This could potentially help us decide what rank it should be (probably A- or something). Anyways, this thing is a terror for stall and balance teams to face, as it retains its utility of priority burn pre mega evo, and becomes a nearly unstoppable Calm Mind sweeper afterwords. It's immune to phazing, status, and Taunt post mega evo because it gains Magic Guard, and combine with its decent defenses, it can blow through teams.

Mega Slowbro

Oh look, another Calm Mind mega that has use pre mega evo. This guy is a crazy good win con. Its basically the reason why any Greninja would run Dark Pulse. Due to its insane 180 defense post mega evo, it can tank nearly any physical attack. Hell, it can set up on Colossoil of all things. Thanks to Calm Mind and Shell Armour, it can boost up its special defense to become a near unbreakable behemoth, with only crazy strong physical or special super effective attacks or phazing stopping it. It can also run a CroBro set that laughs at status, or a Slack Off set that better handles stuff like Mollux or Tomohawk. It also makes Talonflame cry, which is always great.

Mega Beedrill

Beedrill huh. Who would of thought? Thanks to some very lopsided stat boosts and a new toy in Adaptability, Mega Beedrill is now a formidable mon on hyper offense. Its U-Turns hits as hard as CB Scizor's, and it can outspeed almost everything under the sun. Scarf Mollux? Please. +1 Mega Altaria? Piece of cake. Any +1 Aurumoth thats not 252 Jolly? Dead. Greninja? lol. Admittedly, it has horrible problems with Stealth Rock, Tomo, and priority, not to mention taking any hits in general, but hey, what are teammates for?

Mega Metagross

You'd think you would see this thing everywhere. It has good STABs, power, bulk, speed, coverage, and even priority, but you still don't see it nearly as much as you thought you would. Its arguably one of the best offensive checks to fairies, second only to Scizor/Mega Scizor, and can hit very hard with its Tough Claw boosted attacks. Unfortunately, it does have one fatal flaw, a weakness to both of Colossoil's STAB's. Sucker Punch scares the crap out of it and it's never switching in except on Rapid Spin, so maybe that's a reason why its not everywhere like people thought it would be.

Okay, time for some older stuff that I believe have changed in viability and usage.

Mega Scizor

I've always thought Mega Scizor was a sleeper threat in XY; I've seen it pull its weight dozen of times and cleanly sweep teams. Still, in a meta where everyone and their mother had a Cyclohm or Haze Tomohawk, it was only B+. Now, its one of the best Megas imo. The number of stuff it checks has increased dramatically, while the number of stuff that checks it has only grown a little in comparison. Altaria, Diancie, Lopunny, Sceptile, Beedrill, Gallade, Slowbro, and Sharpedo are all wrecked by this guy after a SD boost, and none of them like a Bullet Punch or Bug Bite boost or no boost. Mega Scizor is now the premier Fairy check in the meta, and its counters, such as Cyclohm and Haze Hawk, are too busy being wrecked by the new fairies to care.

Mega Pinsir

Good god was this thing good. It was freaking A+ before, up there with the likes of Mega Gardevoir and Kube. He could come in and nuke everything but Cyclohm and Skarm with Return, and both were easy pickings for a well played Goth. Even then, it could set up a SD on the switch and nuke Cyclohm, and then proceed to sweep entire teams. It outspeed all the top threats save Strata, Greninja, Syclant, Talonflame, and Mega Man, and none of them enjoyed switching into an Earthquake or Return. It even had priority to trouble faster threats. So, what the hell happened? I haven't seen a single Mega Pinsir after ORAS. Did it suddenly go from crazy nuke button to shitty outclassed sweeper? Is it still viable? Has it been an unfortunate victim of shiny new toy syndrome? Did Mega Diancie secretly murder it in it sleep? Who knows, I certainly know I haven't seen it in action for ages.

OK, so I know today is Christmas Eve, but we're going to start the second phase of the CV test today. The nominated pokemon are: Mega Pinsir, Mega Scizor, Mega Metagross, Mega Beedrill, Mega Slowbro, Mega Sableye, Mega Altaria, Mega Lopunny, Plasmanta, Mega Gallade, Greninja, Mega Swampert, Starmie, Gengar, Mega Diancie, and Mega Sharpedo. This is a total of 16 daily pokemon to choose from. Because we are close to 14, I am extending the battle phase, phase 2, one more day so that all the nominees can see play. The dates have been changed to accommodate for this.

Anyways, the 2 CV Pokemon of the day are both megas: Mega Sharpedo and Mega Swampert.

OK, so right now Cbrevan and Khosro are in the lead with 1 point each.

On to the next day. The 2 CV Pokemon of the day are: Mega Altaria and Mega Sableye. Let's get after it everybody, and post in the viability thread if you have anything to say.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/cap-197289998 Pizza Man (Room Auth 1)
Edit: Mega Sab didn't really do too much, other than beat a Mega Bro (courtesy of some haxy SpD drops)

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/cap-197293946 Sigma (Room Auth 2)
Edit: Mega Sab did his job decently here, cleaning up Magnezone and then Kyurem-B (after bulking an outrage like a boss), although he was a passenger for most of the fight, unable to do anything except attempt to Knock Off absorb once, although I could have used him much better.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/cap-197306428 Ladder 1
Edit: Really the best out of the matches for Mega Sab, showing how potent it can be when you let him set up - taking out a specially defensive Umbreon (after a bounced Confused Ray and some SpD drops), casually bulking a Tech Ancient Power from Stratagem, and eating up Mega Gard's Hyper Voice and OHKOing her before being sacked so that the rest of the team can finish up.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/cap-197293946 Ladder 2
Edit: Oh balls this is the wrong link

Edit: http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/cap-197483778 Ladder 3
Edit: Since Ladder match 2 was compromised, here's it's replacement. Mega Sab really didn't do anything other than burn Rebound Colo and rack up LO damage vs Kraken, but meh.

I had some decent mega sab mini-sweeps in these, and he's really quite good. I'll post on the viability thread when I have time.
(Also, yay i think I'm winning :D)

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/cap-197348660 versus Sparktrain, Authority Match 1. Not too proud on this one, but it was a win.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/cap-197332870 verus Jiggly, Authority Match 2. This one was a great match, and jiggly was definitely a worthy adversary. Kudos to him, really (also, sorry, pls dun hate me ;_;).

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/cap-197325285 Ladder 1. Altaria didn't do too much here, other than tank a +1 Mega Gyarados Iron head and KO it in turn. You know, nothing amazing.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/cap-197321467 Ladder 1-and-a-half. A ladder match versus a spark alt that ended in a far too quick forfeit. However, this is probably the only match I had where I would say Altaria truly shined.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/cap-197318128 Ladder 2. Caw won this for me, and Altaria didn't do too much really.

I truly had high hopes for Altaria going into this... Sadly the matches don't reflect that. I'm still willing to use Altaria more, I just don't think that it did what I wanted it to so far.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/cap-197576828 Jiggly (Room Auth 1)
Mega Gallade didn't do a lot, just forced a switch or two, and got a KO. Showed it's special bulk, powerful offense and useful recovery.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/cap-197586414 HeaL (Room Auth 2)
Mega Gallade again proved to be very useful, forcing switches and getting damage and KOs, but once again not the star of the show.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/cap-197573945 Ladder 1
Mega Gallade showed his speed and decent coverage with Knock Off to do his part.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/cap-197598073 Ladder 2
Again, Mega Gallade got a KO, forced switches and put work in, despite the best efforts of Weak Armor WoW Aurumoth.

Again, I'll post on viability thread and do mini-analysis later, but Mega Gallade is not only majestic af with dat cape, but also pretty good.
Also I think you missed out cbrevan/misty Animus.

Greninja put in minimal work here, but still took down a Colossoil and showed how dangerous his coverage is.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/cap-197761541 Room Auth 1.5 (Loss vs viper)
I have may have lost, but Greninja still proved a threat with his coverage and forced switches as always.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/cap-197791264 Room Auth 2 (Jiggly)
Greninja was a menace in this one, getting 2KOs and generally being stronk.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/cap-197780988 Ladder 1
Ninja sat back and watch until the very end, then came in and cleaned up.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/cap-197805905 Ladder 2
Ninja didn't do much here, other than force a switch which kept the momentum in my favour.

One of them is a loss to viper, but this is my fav team, and it was a good match, so wynaut?
I'm a lazy ass, so viability thread post + mini-analysis will be later.
I should really do Gengar too, but idk, I might be too lazy.

Edit: Animus, why did cbrevan not get any points for his 4 replays (2 ladder, 2 room auth) for Mega Swampert? Just wanted to make sure you didn't just accidently miss him out.

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/cap-197912633 vs. Fenciest Fancy (HeaLnDeaL)
Either one of these could be counted as an authority battle, but they both ended in forfeits. In both battles, Mega Scizor was ready to sweep the rest of HeaL's team at the time of the forfeit.
http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/cap-197947984 vs. EpicUmbreon29
Authority battle from a tourney, Mega Scizor helped me wear down Mega Diancie.
http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/cap-197966180 vs. Nick Fury Swipes
Very good ladder battle in which Mega Scizor saves my ass after Nick's Colo critted my BU Talon (which is a good set mind you). It literally sweeps the last four mons in his team when given the chance to set up.
http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/cap-197952042vs. xpertsurvivor
Last ladder match in which Mega Scizor man handles a xpert's gimmick team.

Also Animus, unless I somehow lost the one point I got from Mega Swampert, I should have one point already. If I'm doing something wrong, please let me know so I can fix it.
