Every generation is different and the metagame is constantly changing. However there has always been and always will be threats. Whether they are defensive threats or offensive threats, every competent player should have a way to handle top-tier threats. That's where you guys come in! This project aims to gather some of the common top-tier threats in the metagame and find Pokémon that can either check or counter them.

Procedure:

1. Every round, I will nominate a Pokémon for discussion. Within one week's time, you guys will have the ability to discuss and nominate various Pokémon that you think can either check or counter the victim of the week, with a description explaining how they can do that (look at other nominations for example!).

2. After the deadline, I will choose the top three checks and the top three counters. Should there be a lot of nominations, I will discuss my choices with other skilled players to ensure the selections are not biased and that all nominations have been considered thoroughly.

3. The results will be archived and the process will continue week after week.

Rules:

Update: to avoid confusion, everyone has to post damage calcs when they're submitting their check/counter. This makes it easier for everyone to see how effective the Pokemon in question is as a check/counter.

1. When nominating your check/counter please include:

2. Follow the definitions of checks and counters that was posted in The Smog issue #32:

Pokémon A checks Pokémon B if, when Pokémon A is given a free switch into Pokémon B, Pokémon A can win every time, even under the worst case scenario, without factoring in hax.

Pokémon A counters Pokémon B if Pokémon A can manually switch into Pokémon B and still win every time, even under the worst case scenario, without factoring in hax.
3. When giving checks, follow the advice of alexwolf:

4. Only post sets viable in RU. Niche Pokemon such as Roselia or Probopass are totally acceptable, but bottom-of-the-barrel stuff like Electivire and Shedinja aren't. The viability ranking thread is your best friend, so if something isn't ranked there, 95% of the time it's not worth posting here.

5. From Saturday - Tuesday, each person can only nominate one Pokemon. From Wednesday to Friday, you can nominate as many as you want.

6. Help people out if you think they're wrong, but please be nice.

7. Do be creative.

8. Have fun!

Jellicent @ Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 248 HP / 216 Def / 44 Spe
Bold Nature
- Taunt
- Will-O-Wisp
- Scald / Hex
- Recover

One of the biggest zero to hero transitions in recent months, Jellicent has made its mark as a top tier defensive threat in RU

So what Pokemon are able to keep it in line?

have fun.

Cobalion as a check

Cobalion @ Leftovers
Ability: Justified
EVs: 160 HP / 96 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Volt Switch
- Close Combat
- Taunt

Cobalion is a great check because its a good pivot that can easily be slapped on any offensive or balanced team. With it's great raw physical bulk and a bit of investment in HP it can easily switch in to most Sharpedo sets and kill it with Close Combat, x4 resisting Crunch and only taking ~36% on average from Waterfall:

252+ Atk Mega Sharpedo Waterfall vs. 160 HP / 0 Def Cobalion: 123-145 (33.8 - 39.9%) -- 36.1% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

while the LO set can only 3HKO assuming no spikes are on the field:

252+ Atk Life Orb Sharpedo Waterfall vs. 160 HP / 0 Def Cobalion: 142-169 (39.1 - 46.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Granbull as a Counter

fido (Granbull) @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Impish Nature
- Heal Bell
- Thunder Wave / Rest
- Play Rough
- Earthquake / Sleep Talk

Granbull has excellent physical defense backed by Intimidate allowing it to check various physical attackers such as Sharpedo as it resists Crunch and can easily shrug off a Waterfall.
Sharpedo can only 4HKO at best while Granbull can kill 2 Sharpedos with one Play Rough :P

Calcs:

-1 252+ Atk Life Orb Sharpedo Waterfall vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Granbull: 103-122 (26.8 - 31.7%) -- 27.4% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
-1 252+ Atk Life Orb Sharpedo Crunch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Granbull: 51-61 (13.2 - 15.8%) -- possibly the worst move ever
...

Mega shark:

-1 252+ Atk Mega Sharpedo Waterfall vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Granbull: 88-105 (22.9 - 27.4%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
-1 252+ Atk Strong Jaw Mega Sharpedo Crunch vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Granbull: 66-78 (17.2 - 20.3%) -- possible 7HKO after Leftovers recovery
Well, at least it isnt the worst move ever?

And in return:
0 Atk Granbull Play Rough vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Sharpedo: 458-542 (162.9 - 192.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

ok maybe I exaggerated about the killing two thing but whatevs :P

EDIT: Here's Mola

Alomomola @ Leftovers
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 104 HP / 248 Def / 156 SpD
Bold Nature
- Wish
- Protect
- Toxic
- Scald

When it comes to walling Sharpedo, not much can do the job better than physically defensive Alomomola. Alomomola has the great physical bulk and solid typing needed to switch into physical varients of Sharpedo, mega or otherwise, pretty damn easily. From there, Alomomola can simply cripple Sharpedo with a Toxic and alternate between Wish and Protect to easily outlast Shark 1v1. It's not like Alomomola is easy to wear down either, the combination of Wish, Leftovers, Protect, and Regenerator ensures that Mola can stay healthy for the entirety of the match in the hands of a good player, making it a potential roadblock for Sharpedo for the majority of the game.

Calcs:

252+ Atk Strong Jaw Mega Sharpedo Crunch vs. 104 HP / 248+ Def Alomomola: 190-225 (38.2 - 45.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

This is the absolute most you'll ever be taking from physical Sharpedo on the switch in, so Alomomola can switch in pretty comfortably and proceed to stall out Sharpedo pretty reliably imo, especially considering a lot are reluctant to mega evolve immediately considering they lose Speed Boost if they do.

252+ Atk Life Orb Sharpedo Crunch vs. 104 HP / 248+ Def Alomomola: 165-195 (33.1 - 39.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock, 1 layer of Spikes, and Leftovers recovery

This is the most physical LO Sharpedo can do to you, you avoid the 2HKO from Crunch even if there's Stealth Rock and a layer of Spikes up, so you should be p. much fine.

252+ SpA Life Orb Sharpedo Dark Pulse vs. 104 HP / 156 SpD Alomomola: 216-255 (43.4 - 51.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Even Special Sharpedo is going to struggle to break through you (although it stands much more of a chance), Stealth Rock might seem like it can bring you into KO range at first, but Protect's extra turn of Leftovers recovery means that you can still avoid the 2HKO from Life Orb Dark Pulse after SR ~93% of the time.

Can't stop the top

Hitmontop (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Impish Nature
- Toxic
- Close Combat
- Rapid Spin
- Foresight

This set is nothing out of the ordinary, since it still keeps its role as a rapid spinner. However, the EVs guarantee it cannot be 2HKO'd by zen headbutt from the life orb set even with stealth rocks up. Hitmontop can then KO back.
-1 252+ Atk Life Orb Sharpedo Zen Headbutt vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Hitmontop: 117-140 (38.6 - 46.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
0 Atk Hitmontop Close Combat vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Sharpedo: 498-588 (177.2 - 209.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

You have to be cautious about switching in on zen headbutt, but even with that risk you still win 1v1.

Mega sharpedo is worse off, it 4HKOs it at the best with waterfall while still being OHKO'd from close combat.
-1 252+ Atk Sharpedo Waterfall vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Hitmontop: 76-90 (25 - 29.7%) -- 15.3% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
0 Atk Hitmontop Close Combat vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Sharpedo: 330-390 (117.4 - 138.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

If for some reason your opponent is running zen headbutt instead of ice fang, you are still 3HKO'd at best, so I would say hitmontop is a counter for sharpedo, mega or not.

Gurdurr as a check

(sorry I have no clue how to put a picture here :P)

Molk EDIT: no problem man i got you

Maurits EDIT: Cheers ^

Gurdurr @Eviolite
Ability: Guts
Adamant Nature
- Bulk Up
- Drain Punch
- Knock Off
- Mach Punch

Gurdurr is an excellent counter to Mega-Sharpedo. It takes 36.8% Max. from an unboosted Waterfall which means it can switch into it, and survive the next hit as well. Zen Headbutt wil do 49% max. which means it can take 2 of those as well. It can retaliate back with Mach Punch for a lot of damage, or set up some bulk ups so it will take hits even better. The set is designed to give Gurdurr a lot of surviveability, but also being able to hit hard with powerfull STAB's or Knock Off

Calcs:

252+ Atk Mega Sharpedo Waterfall vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Eviolite Gurdurr: 117-138 (31.2 - 36.8%) -- 71.6% chance to 3HKO

(without rocks)
252+ Atk Mega Sharpedo Zen Headbutt vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Eviolite Gurdurr: 156-184 (41.7 - 49.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

(with rocks)
252+ Atk Mega Sharpedo Zen Headbutt vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Eviolite Gurdurr: 156-184 (41.7 - 49.1%) -- 17.6% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock

252+ Atk Gurdurr Mach Punch vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mega Sharpedo: 168-198 (59.7 - 70.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

Aromatisse @ Leftovers
Ability: Aroma Veil
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
- Wish
- Protect
- Moonblast
- Aromatherapy

Aromatisse can consistently switch in, maintain high hp and ohko with its main stab move. ez

0 SpA Aromatisse Moonblast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mega Sharpedo: 288-342 (102.4 - 121.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ Atk Mega Sharpedo Waterfall vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Aromatisse: 135-159 (33.2 - 39.1%) -- 8.7% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Whimsicott @ Leftovers
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 160 HP / 96 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- U-turn
- Moonblast
- Encore
- Giga Drain
Whimsicott @ Life Orb
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Encore
- Moonblast
- Giga Drain
- Hidden Power [Fire] / Hidden Power [Rock] / Stun Spore

Whimsicott resists pretty much every move Sharpedo commonly carries but the uncommon Poison Jab and Fang and Ice Fang mentioned here. Thanks to Encore Whimsicott stops Sharpedo from switching moves to take it out and Punishes any use of Protect. I like running U-turn+Encore with Leftovers for a lot for free momentum and the ability to not be worn down by random Scald Burns as well as entry hazards that much but an offensive set works too I'd say. The EV spread Ohkos Mega Sharpedo with Moonblast after Stealth Rock pretty much every time and guarantees stuff like the 2HKO on Sdef Rhyperior. The set is very flexible outside of Encore + U-turn IMO and moves such as Stun Spore and even Hidden Power Rock or Fire are perfectly viable. This Mon also checks mega Sceptile and beats Slurpuff which for offensive teams is amazing so give it a try imo.

Audino @ Audinite
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Calm Mind
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Dazzling Gleam / Hyper Voice

This thing is a cool win condition on stall, and incredibly fat. It can easily take on Mega Sharpedo, while also tanking hits from Moltres and Mega Lopunny all in one which is pretty cool. An immunity to Trick, albeit uncommon, is pretty nice as well. The thing avoids a 4HKO from a LO Waterfall, and is only 3hkoed by the uncommon Poison Jab.

252+ Atk Mega Sharpedo Waterfall vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mega Audino: 93-111 (22.6 - 27%) -- 41.2% chance to 4HKO
252+ Atk Strong Jaw Mega Sharpedo Poison Fang vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mega Audino: 116-138 (28.2 - 33.6%) -- 0.2% chance to 3HKO
252+ Atk Life Orb Sharpedo Waterfall vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mega Audino: 109-129 (26.5 - 31.4%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
252+ Atk Life Orb Sharpedo Poison Jab vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mega Audino: 146-172 (35.6 - 41.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
0 SpA Mega Audino Dazzling Gleam vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Sharpedo: 290-344 (103.2 - 122.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO(mega sharp can take one but w/e)

While Whimsicott is an extremely viable Pokemon in RU, the set you have posted is not, unfortunately. The main problem is that your set has literally no possibility of beating any of the Grass-types in RU barring Virizion and (Mega) Sceptile (lacking HP fire) (and that's only if you go with Moonblast), it is extremely susceptible to status (once it has been Toxiced or Burned it is pretty much useless) and just generally set up bait for most Pokemon in the tier. On top of this, using defensive boosts on something with very little offensive presence, such as your Whimsicott, doesn't really do anything and essentially makes you crit bait (if you weren't already dead weight before do to the existence of Grass-types). Your set also has a problem with some of the powerful Special Attackers in the tier such as Moltres, Houndoom, Mega-Pidgeot, Mega Camerupt, etc. as you have no recovery outside of Leech Seed and they can just come in and nuke you even through screens. If you want to use a pretty cool Whimsicott set I suggest you take a look at Galbia's post here. Also welcome to Smogon, hope you enjoy it here n_n.

Lanturn as a Check

Lanturn @ Leftovers
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 40 HP / 252 Def / 216 SpD
Calm Nature
- Scald
- Volt Switch
- Heal Bell
- Thunder Wave / Toxic

Lanturn finds its niche in RU as an excellent check / counter to Moltres, and also handles other special attackers such as Houndoom fairly well. Lanturn is only a check because it is 2HKOed by +2 LO Dark Pulse (and has a high chance to get 2HKOed by +2 Fire Blast rip), and it cannot always OHKO Houndoom even after Stealth Rock and Life Orb damage. However, if Lanturn gets a high roll or doesnt get flinched after switching in on a Nasty Plot, it's in a great position. If it switches in on an attack, it can either cripple houndoom with a status move or hit it hard with a scald.

Calcs:

252 SpA Life Orb Houndoom Dark Pulse vs. 40 HP / 216+ SpD Lanturn: 134-160 (33.4 - 39.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

+2 252 SpA Life Orb Houndoom Fire Blast vs. 40 HP / 216+ SpD Lanturn: 183-217 (45.6 - 54.1%) -- 95.3% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

+2 252 SpA Life Orb Houndoom Dark Pulse vs. 40 HP / 216+ SpD Lanturn: 269-317 (67 - 79%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

0 SpA Lanturn Scald vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Houndoom: 168-198 (57.7 - 68%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

There was a slight correction and I chose Granbull over Hitmontop

The Lucky Absol boltsandbombers sorry n_n

also DaGuyWithAFace you never posted your set.

one last thing: make sure to specify if what you're posting is a counter or a check, and make sure to know the difference! its in the op.

and this is my entry:

dugtrio as a check

Dugtrio @ Choice Band / Life Orb
Ability: Arena Trap
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Sucker Punch
- Memento / Aerial Ace

Dugtrio, assuming Houndoom hasn't gotten off a Flame Charge, can easily trap Houndoom to make sure it doesn't escape and kill it with EQ. Sucker Punch (which is viable btw) could be problematic though but as long as Dugtrio is fully healthy it can never OHKO unless it's a Houndoom that's invested in attack which is rare. Earthquake, Stone Edge, and Sucker Punch are all staples on Dugtrio so I'll talk about the last move. If you're using Choice Band, then Aerial Ace is a nice option to trap Virizion and Virizion only, because other than that it's completely useless, and that's only for when you have no other means of dealing with it, while Memento on the other hand helps a lot to give a teammate (slurpuff, DD tyrantrum, or SD sceptile for example) an opportunity to set up if Dugtrio isn't needed anymore. It's a bit tricky to use with Choice Band though. Personally I prefer using AA with CB and Memento with LO, and I prefer LO dugtrio in general. Toxic is also a usable option to cripple some walls if needed, which Dugtrio isn't going to muscle through any time soon.

Check:

Sharpedo @ Sharpedonite
Ability: Strong Jaw
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant nature
-Crunch
-Waterfall
-Poison Fang/Ice Fang
-Protect

Sharpedo checks pretty much any offensive mon, so its really no surprise that it checks Houndoom. Assuming it didn't grab a Flame Charge boost (irrelevant if you decide to run Jolly), you can easily boost up to +1 with Protect and KO with Waterfall. Not only this, but Houndoom is actually a great fodder for you to grab a +2 speed boost on, since you can KO without mega evolving and double protect if it decides to switch. This also means you are not forced to mega evolve to defeat Houndoom, meaning you can play a bit conservatively if there are still checks left alive. In a worse case scenario, Sharpedo also still resists all of Houndoom's moves barring HP Grass, and in conjunction with its mega's improved bulk can tank any move from full health (w/o a nasty plot boost, but you shouldn't let it get to +2/+1 in the first place lol)

Moltres as a Check:

Moltres @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hurricane
- Fire Blast
- Flamethrower
- U-turn

Scarf Moltres is a really good revenge killer that checks a lot of offensive threats, one of them being Houndoom, which is the mon in question this week. Do note that you HAVE to pair this with a defogger, due to it being 4x weak to rocks. Try not to switch Moltres in on Houndoom, but if you absolutely have to, Moltres can switch in at least once if Houndoom hasn't got any boosts and rocks aren't up on your side of the field. The reason why this is a check is because it cannot switch in on Houndoom comfortably, and if Houndoom has got a speed boost up from Flame Charge, you have to take quite a lot of damage from Dark Pulse before you can kill with Hurricane since it outspeeds if it manages to get the +1 boost from Flame Charge.

Relevant Calcs:
252 SpA Life Orb Houndoom Dark Pulse vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Moltres: 175-207 (54.5 - 64.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Moltres Hurricane vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Houndoom: 211-249 (72.5 - 85.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Emboar @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Flare Blitz
- Superpower
- Sleep Talk
- Wild Charge

Counter
Have to go soon so won't have much explanation. Although Emboar is a pretty well known emboar counter, I really don't care though. Emboar can switch into any move and outspeed it. Then you can proceed to kill it with Superpower. Will probably explain more later but don't count on it.

CHECK(fIXED)

Gastrodon @ Leftovers
Ability: Storm Drain
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Recover
- Clear Smog
- Scald
- Earth Power

He resist his strongest STAB and tanks Dark pulses nicely thanks to his high Special defense. However if Houndoom carries Hp grass its over. This pokemon counter only Houndooms that DONT carry HP Grass.

Not a counter, a check though. If it switches in on nasty plot, it gets 2HKOed.
+2 252 SpA Life Orb Houndoom Dark Pulse vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Gastrodon: 247-292 (57.9 - 68.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

Combusken @ Eviolite
Ability: Speed Boost
EVs: 252 HP / 64 Def / 140 SpD / 52 Spe
Careful Nature
- Protect
- Bulk Up
- Baton Pass
- Brick Break / Substitute

The EV spread is to outspeed Max Speed Timid Houndoom at +2, to live an Acrobatics at +1, and rest is poured into Special Defense to beat any Houndoom ever. I guess it can only fit on particular teams but having one of the best Pokemon in the tier as setup fodder for your win condition sounds pretty awesome to me. Brick Break is mostly to take out Houndoom but passing a Substitute works too to beat it. Bulk Up over SD because we can.
252 SpA Life Orb Houndoom Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 140+ SpD Eviolite Combusken: 78-92 (24 - 28.3%)
+2 252 SpA Life Orb Houndoom Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 140+ SpD Eviolite Combusken: 156-183 (48.1 - 56.4%)
0 Atk Combusken Brick Break vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Houndoom: 242-288 (83.1 - 98.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock or one round of Life Orb recoil

Zweilous @ Eviolite
Ability: Hustle
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Outrage
- Crunch
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

Zweilous as counter, Rest to prevent burns and goes down fast, Sleep Talk to attack him while sleeping and Outrage is gonna HKO Houndoom always.

0 Atk Hustle Zweilous Outrage vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Houndoom: 291-343 (100 - 117.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+2 252 SpA Houndoom Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Eviolite Zweilous: 96-114 (27.5 - 32.7%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
