Week 35 - BoltBeam Mega-Latias

Latias-Mega @ Latiasite

Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Thunderbolt
- Ice Beam
- Thunder Wave

Scizor @ Leftovers
Ability: Technician
EVs: 248 HP / 164 Def / 96 SpD
Impish Nature
- Swords Dance
- U-turn
- Bullet Punch
- Roost

As mentioned above Mega Latias really hates Fairies and fast Dragons, as well as Ice-types. A bulky regular Scizor acts as a strong check to pokemon such as Mega Diancie, Mega Gardevoir, Clefable, Latios, Weavile, and Kyurem-Black. U-turn provides momentum while Swords Dance allows Scizor to set up on things that wall Mega Latias such as Ferrothorn or Chansey. In return, Mega Latias can check Keldeo, Manaphy, and other Water-types which tend to be problematic for Scizor to deal with.

Lucario @ Life Orb
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Close Combat
- Swords Dance
- Extreme Speed
- Bullet Punch / Iron Tail

Lucario is able to come in and blow away Mega Latias's common switch-ins such as Tyranitar, Scizor, Chansey and Bisharp while also being able to pick off Weavile, Mega Diancie, Mamoswine and Mega Gardevoir with Bullet Punch. Lucario also enjoys Thunder Wave support due to its average Speed. The two Pokemon also share perfect type synergy as they resist each other's weakness perfectly (except Fairy ). Because of this, Mega Latias is able to check Pokemon that trouble Lucario such as Manaphy, Mega Charizard-Y, Gyarados and Slowbro. Iron Tail is an option to hit Clefable harder but for this core, it is more important to pick off Ice and Fairy types.

Reserving rotom-heat

Rotom-Heat @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 248 HP / 108 Def / 144 SpD / 8 Spe
Bold Nature
- Volt Switch
- Pain Split
- Will-O-Wisp
- Overheat

From a defensive standpoint mega latias really despise facing ice types like mamoswine and weavile, can be setup bait for mons like mega scizor and dislike facing fairies like mega gardevoir and mega altaria. Rotom-heat can handle many of these targets virtue of its solid typing; shutting down mamoswine, checking weavile in a pinch and dealing with mega scizor and fairies like altaria and gardevoir being able to pain on them, pivot on them or just burn them.

I always found the max def ev spread rather inefficient so I went with this spread that let it actually check mega gardevoir making focus blast a 3hko, still check talonflame and altaria really well and handles electric types better with the spdef investment. Take into account this doesnt solve the clefable issue with mega latias but not every nomination cant be a steel type, Im right? :)

Offensive pivot Cobalion

Cobalion @ Leftovers
Ability: Justified
EVs: 144 HP / 112 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Close Combat
- Volt Switch
- Stealth Rock
- Iron Head

Here we have Cobalion which provides some coverage towards the Pursuit users such as Weavile, Tyranitar and Bisharp eating Dark-type attacks to boost its own Atk or can use Iron Head (Thunder Wave support is very appreciated) to paraflinch the opposite Fairy to death, not to mention that Faeries are usually weak on the physical side of the spectrum. It provides a fast Volt Switch to gain momentum and Stealth Rock to wear down the opponent.

Been meaning to give BoltBeam Mega Lati a try, seems like a cool mon! Guess I'll post a nomination :o

Stallbreaking Heatran

Heatran @ Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Magma Storm
- Taunt
- Toxic
- Earth Power

The defensive synergy between Heatran and Mega Latias is fantastic, as they cover nearly all of each others weaknesses, but that's not why I chose this Heatran. When you look at the Pokemon that wall this variant of Mega Latias, pretty much all of them are dealt with by Stallbreaker Heatran, leaving Lati free to BoltBeam its way to victory without a fat blob jumping in the way! Things like Chansey, Clefable, Mega Venusaur, Mew, Ferrothorn, Jirachi etc are trapped and neutralised with Magma Storm + Taunt + Toxic. Opposing Heatran just drop to Earth Power, and even some of Mega Lati's more offensive threats like Scizor, Bisharp and Mega Heracross are OHKO'd by Magma Storm. Heatran also appreciates the speed control provided by Mega Lati's Twaves, allowing it to do more than just break down slower Pokemon and actually KO faster threats that have been paralysed, such as Mega Metagross.

Clefable @ Leftovers
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 172 Def / 84 SpD
Calm Nature
- Calm Mind
- Moonblast
- Soft-Boiled
- Flamethrower

Back with another fairy this round! I often see the posted Mega Latias paired with Reuniclus and Clefable to take advantage of the paralysis it spreads. Mega Latias paralyzes Pokemon like Mega Metagross, Jirachi, Heatran, and Bisharp if needed. All of those Pokemon are common checks to Clefable, and having them paralyzed gives you an easier time beating them. Aside from this, Clefable performs well against things like Mega Sableye, Weavile, and Mega Diancie, all of which greatly bother Mega Latias. In return, Mega Latias can check things capable of breaking through Clefable, like Charizard-Y, SD Gliscor, and Manaphy.

Reserving Excadrill

Excadrill (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 248 HP / 224 SpD / 36 Spe
Careful Nature
- Earthquake
- Iron Head
- Stealth Rock / Toxic
- Rapid Spin

OK, Excadrill takes on all the pesky little fairies and steels that threaten Laitas, provides hazard removal, and Toxic's things it predicts. It speed creeps the old 44 speed Rotom-Wash, but that is changeable. In return, Latias eats Scalds, (which is why I like Reflect Type and Refresh slashed with T-Wave) and beats the ground types and water types that threaten out the drill.

Week 36 - Offensive Mega-Gyarados

Gyarados-Mega @ Gyaradosite
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Waterfall
- Crunch
- Ice Fang
- Dragon Dance

Heatran @ Power Herb
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Fire Blast / Magma Storm
- Earth Power
- Solar Beam
- Stealth Rock

Solar Beam Heatran is a seriously awesome partner to Gyarados. Both it and its partner despise Water-types such as Suicune, Azumarill, Quagsire, and Rotom-W. Solar Beam servery weakens almost all of Gyarados's checks for it, and its Fire-STAB defeats Grass-types such as Tangrowth, Ferrothorn, Mega Venusaur, and Serperior. It also sets up Stealth Rock which chips away at the foe's health, letting Gyarados sweep easier. Gyarados, in return, defeats bulky-Ground types such as Gliscor and Landorus-T, and other specially defensive walls such as Chansey.

Reserving Azumarill.

Crushed (Azumarill) @ Choice Band
Ability: Huge Power
EVs: 172 HP / 252 Atk / 84 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Play Rough
- Waterfall
- Aqua Jet
- Superpower

Azumarill is a fantastic partner to Mega Gyarados, as they form an extremely threatening Water spam core, effectively eliminating each others checks and counters. Azumarill can easily eliminate common Fighting types that worry Mega Gyarados, including Keldeo and Mega Lopunny while also removing Mega Altaria pretty easily. In return, Gyarados can set up on and eliminate bulky Mega Scizor that lack Superpower while also setting up on and removing bulky Waters such as Quagsire and Slowbro.

Toxicroak @ Life Orb
Ability: Dry Skin
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Gunk Shot
- Drain Punch
- Sucker Punch
- Swords Dance

Toxicroak is a nice partner to Mega Gyarados as it can easily defeat Azumarill, Chesnaught, Clefable, Celebi and Ferrothorn which wall Mega Gyarados. In return, Mega Gyarados takes care of bulky Psychics such as Slowbro, Reuniclus and Mew which check Toxicroak. Ice Fang is used by Mega Gyarados to weaken Mega Altaria and Mega Venusaur.

Celebi @ Leftovers
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 HP / 148 Def / 108 Spe
Bold Nature
- Nasty Plot
- Giga Drain
- Recover
- Earth Power

Celebi is a nice partner for Gyarados. It can switch in on and beat things like Rotom-W, Quagsire, and Ferrothorn, set up a Nasty Plot, and set about wallbreaking. It's also able to check mons like Thundurus, Keldeo, and Mega Manectric, which can be problems for Gyarados. In return, Mega Gyarados can help deal with mons like offensive Heatran, Weavile, Scizor, Tyranitar, and Volcarona, especially before Mega Evolving.

Breloom @ Life Orb
Ability: Technician
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Spore
- Bullet Seed
- Mach Punch
- Swords Dance

Breloom and Mega Gyarados form a nice offensive combo. They weaken or eliminate each others checks and counters well. The main things Breloom dislikes are Pokemon immune to Spore, like Mega Venusaur and Celebi. Others like Tornadus-T and Mega Altaria are also annoying even though they are vulnerable to sleep. Mega Altaria and Mega Venusaur are common checks to Mega Gyarados, and Ice Fang is able to weaken them well for Breloom. Ice Fang also eliminates unsuspecting bulky Garchomp's, which Breloom appreciates greatly. Crunch takes care of the other Pokemon mentioned, such as Celebi. In exchange, Breloom scares away troublesome threats to Mega Gyarados, like Rotom-W and Azumarill. You can double switch Breloom in on these Pokemon if you anticipate your opponent bringing them while Mega Gyarados is in, and proceed to do big damage or make something catch the zZz's. With Spore, you can create opportunities for your mega to DD later, and sleep things like Skarmory, who often tries to Whirlwind a boosted Mega Gyarados. SD lets loomy break walls down for Gyara and be dangerous on its own.

Volcarona @ Passho Berry
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 40 HP / 252 SpA / 216 Spe
Timid Nature
- Fire Blast
- Giga Drain
- Quiver Dance
- Bug Buzz

Volcarona is an awesome partner with Mega Gyarados. They really pressure teams as they together resist all types of priority making an oppurtinity for the other to possibly sweep nearly always possible. Volcarona, with access to Giga Drain and Fire Blast, can take out a lot of Gyarados's checks such as bulky Steels such as Ferrothorn and Water's like Azumarill. It also screws over Grass-types that Gyarados can't really take on unless it has already boosted.

Also Substitute / Taunt is really better instead of Ice Fang imo

Dragalge @ Choice Specs
Ability: Adaptability
EVs: 108 HP / 252 SpA / 148 Spe
Modest Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Sludge Wave
- Scald
- Hidden Power [Fire]

Although it is prediction reliant, Dragalge is a powerful wallbreaker which forces many switches. It has good defensive synergy with Mega Gyarados resisting Bug, Fighting and Electric whereas Gyarados resistists Ice and is immune to Psychic. Hidden Power Fire is nice to get past some grass types such as Tangrowth and Ferrothorn and steel types not named Heatran which stop Gyarados in its tracks; Sludge Wave is there to deal some damage to Fairies (i.e. OHKOing and outspeeding 16 Spe EVs Choice Specs Sylveon). Scald is for both coverage and utility with the burn chance whereas Draco Meteor is the main STAB to use when Fairies and Steels are gone.

Week 37 - Life Orb Breloom

Breloom @ Life Orb

EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

- Mach Punch
- Spore
- Swords Dance

Aragorn the King

Manectric @ Manectite
Ability: Lightningrod
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Volt Switch
- Flamethrower / Overheat
- Hidden Power Ice

Life Orb Breloom and Mega Manectric from a nice core for offensive teams. One thing certainly true with Breloom is that it hates Flying-types, including Tornadus-T, Talonflame, and Mega Pinsir. Mega Manectric, by virtue of its Speed, ability, and typing, is able to help mend this weakness on any team carrying Breloom; it can switch into and lower the Attacks of Talonflame and Pinsir before killing them and/or gaining momentum by switching out. With Torn-T, Mane really doesn't want to switch in on the Flying move, as Hurricane can do over half with rocks, but it can switch in on a predicted physical move or come in as a revenge killer.

Mane isn't that powerful, so bulky things it hits neutrally as well as Ground-types are a big problem. Common switch-ins, like Hippowdon and Quagsire, are no match for Breloom's Bullet Seed (or spore), and other bulky mons Manectric can't 2hko, including (Mega) Ttar and Heatran, are defeated by Superpower / Mach Punch.

Collectively, the core handles Bulky waters very efficiently, as Tbolt handles all but Water / Grounds, which Bullet Seed destroys. CharX is certainly a problem, as are most fires, so a Ground or Rock type like Hippo or ttar can help out a lot.

Rotom-W

Rotom-Wash @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 Spe
Bold Nature
- Discharge
- Hydro Pump
- Will-O-Wisp
- Pain Split

Rotom-W procures momentum with a 30% chance of paralysis from Discharge and checks dangerous Flying-types such as Talonflame, Tornadus-T, Mega Pinsir and Gyarados which are all able to OHKO Breloom. Rotom-W in particular offers a check to numerous Fire-types such as Victini, Infernape, and Talonflame with Hydro Pump and appreciates Breloom's ability to deal with the likes of Ferrothorn and Quagsire even though they can be softened with a Will-O-Wisp.

Grass types are a problem even though most of them can be crippled by burn and worn down to the point they can be revenge killed easily.

The core formed by Rotom-W + Breloom has many ways to deal with bulky waters and grounds; Discharge + Spore can incapacitate some generic threats. The addition of Rotom-W, while being basic, provides much room to the other teammates leaving open the slot of the Megastone and adds valuable defensive synergies to the team thanks to the resistances of the washing machine.

Charizard @ Charizardite X
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Flare Blitz
- Dragon Claw
- Roost

Breloom and CharX make a neat core as they break each other's checks and counters for one or the other to sweep. CharX checks the annoying fire types such as Victini and Talonflame, bulky grass types such as M-Venu, Amoongus and Celebi, and steels such as Scizor. In return Breloom takes out the few things that can prevent a CharX sweep, namely bulky grounds, bulky waters, Heatran, and sand rush Excadrill, which still outspeeds after a DD. Breloom destroys Hippowdon, Quagsire, Rotom-W, Slowbro and friends with bullet seed, breaks Excadrill in half and threatens Heatran with mach punch, and can send any other annoying mons such as unaware Clefable and M-Altaria to sleep with spore.
Defensively they cover each other's weaknesses well too, CharX covering Breloom's fire weaknesses while Loom resists ground and rock, with no shared weaknesses between them.

Thundurus (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunder Wave
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Focus Blast

Breloom hates flying types, which makes almost any electric type a good offensive partner for Breloom. The reason why Thundurus especially is good paired with breloom, is because it gets prankster Thunder Wave. Breloom is very slow for an SD sweeper, which makes him rely a lot on Mach Punch OHKO'ing the target at +2, which it oftens fails to. Having targets paralyzed makes it way easier for Breloom to sweep, because he can bullet seed faster mons which would survive a mach punch.

Obviously Thundurus can also just kill a lot of checks and counters to breloom, like Talonflame and Tornadus-T.

Breloom also has an easy time dealing with fat ground types like Hippowdon, which are a big problem for Thundurus.

Infernal

Banned deucer.

Heatran
@ Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 248 HP / 192 SpD / 68 Spe
Calm Nature
- Lava Plume
- Toxic
- Taunt
- Stealth Rock

Heatran pairs very well with Breloom defensively. Shroomy primarily has problems with grasses like Mega Venusaur, Celebi, and Amoonguss. Having a reliable response to Mega Venusaur is especially important, because it's Breloom's best counter, coming in freely and firing away strong Sludge Bombs afterwards. And those hurt! Vulnerability to Spore aside, other threats like Talonflame, Mega Altaria, Latios, and several more Pokemon are annoying. Heatran pairs well with Breloom for this reason, handling Mega Venusaur and the other mentioned threats nicely. In return, Breloom scares away several things standing in Heatran's way. This includes various water types like Rotom-W, Slowbro, and Quagsire. Ground types like Hippowdon also fall under this category because Breloom has little to fear from it, letting it switch in and pose an immediate threat.

I simply took the analysis set, but Protect over Taunt can be used to get more Leftovers recovery, which makes Heatran a sturdier answer to the threats mentioned. It also allows for scouting vs. things like Mega Altaria. The EV spread could also be made faster to handle all variants of Scizor, but the general idea of Heatran being a good partner is still there.

Talonflame @ Sharp Beak
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Brave Bird
- Flare Blitz
- Swords Dance
- Roost

Talonflame is mostly hampered by bulky ground, rock, and water types all of which are threatened heavily by Breloom. Breloom is mostly checked by bulky grass types although it is also annoyed by dragons like Mega Altaria and psychic types that resist Mach Punch. Talonflame of course handles grass types well, is a very strong check to Mega Altaria and checks most psychic types pretty well. The other thing is that Breloom is rather slow so it relies on its priority and the pressure it applies to archetypes such as weather offense and Mega Lopunny teams while Talonflame can struggle against weather offense but helps against general speed that Breloom has problems with.

Taking Tyranitar.

Tyranitar @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Fire Blast
- Crunch
- Stone Edge
- Pursuit

Tyranitar can Trap Gengar, Latis , it gets rid of psychics, it can revenge kill Fire types like Zard Y and Victini, last but no least it also beats flying types like Torn-T, Talonflame, Mega Pidgeot and Mega Pinsir, in return Breloom beats Lucario, most of steel types, it gets rid of Fat Ground-types and Water types, this particular Tyranitar lacks Superpower since Loom beats most of steel types anyways, both Mega Scizor and Skarmory can be annoyances because loom lacks Focus Punch :[ so I run Fire Blast to nab a clean 2HKO.

4 SpA Tyranitar Fire Blast vs. 248 HP / 200 SpD Mega Scizor: 252-300 (73.4 - 87.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

4 SpA Tyranitar Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Skarmory: 204-240 (61 - 71.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Weavile @ Life Orb
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Knock Off
- Icicle Crash
- Ice Shard
- Pursuit

Weavile and Breloom forms an interesting core because Weavile helps to defeat many threats such as Celebi, Mega Altaria, Tornadus-T, Gengar, Alakazam and Lati@s , the latter three which it can Pursuit trap. In return, Breloom pressures bulky Waters and slower Pokemon such as Clefable and Skarmory with its STABs and Spore. Breloom can also opt to drop Swords Dance for Focus Punch which deals a lot of damage to switch-ins such as Dragalge, Talonflame, Skarmory, Mega Scizor and a Dancing Mega Charizard-X (if you predict a DD, you can do this and kill it with Priority later).
