Project Pokemon Matchmaking v2 [Closed]

Charizard @ Charizardite X
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Flare Blitz
- Dragon Claw
- Roost

Charizard X and Lucario form a nice dual boosting offensive core capable of overwhelming checks to both Luc and Zard such as bulky Ground-types. Zard X is capable of handling some mons that Lucario struggles against such as Mega Venusaur, and Heracross. Lucario in turn can break down and weaken some threats to Zard X such as Rhyperior, Altaria, Heatran and Tyranitar.

  • Provides a secondary steel for teams with Luke. This is nice because Luke can't really check fairies like Mega Diancie, DD Mega Altaria, and Mega Gardevoir very reliably. Mega Sciz helps make up for this while also using its typing and bulk to check other offensive threats like Mega Zam, Kyurem-B, and Latios for the offensive builds Luke is normally on.
  • Mega Sciz and Luke are able to weaken defensive obstacles for each other. For example, Pokemon like Hippo, Lando-T, Tank Chomp, and Skarm can all be overwhelmed or weakened by either Mega Sciz or Luke, paving the way for either core member to sweep with less interruptions later on. Luke in particular is walled by Slowbro, which Mega Sciz does a good job threatening.
  • These two guys also weaken shared offensive checks for each other. For example, Luke can be revenged killed by a healthy Keld or Mega Manec. However, a +2 Extreme Speed will put both Pokemon in range to be killed by a +2 Mega Sciz.
  • To round things off, Mega Sciz does a good job taking advantage of or threatening a couple of other offensive threats that can revenge kill Luke. This includes Pokemon like Terrak, Mega Diancie, Scarf Tar, and Mega Metagross, all of which are faster than Luke and resist Extreme Speed.

Clefable @ Babiri Berry
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 252 HP / 172 Def / 84 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Calm Mind
- Moonblast
- Counter
- Soft-Boiled

What this Clefable does is pretty nice, it lures annoyances like Excadrill, Lando-T, Garchomp, Mega Scizor and Mega Metagross to hit it with a physical move and then OHKO back with Counter, allowing you to clean up an annoying Pokemon for Lucario to deal with. Clefable itself is also fairly self-sufficient and helps to deal with Mega Sableye. You can run Crunch on Lucario here to help against Calm Mind Psychics like Reuniclus. This core still needs support against Mew though.

Adamant Nature
- Close Combat
- Pin Missile
- Rock Blast
- Swords Dance / Substitute

Mega Heracross helps to break past Landorus-T, Mega Scizor, Bisharp and bulky Waters with Swords Dance. Jirachi helps it by being a good pivot into Fairy-type and Psychic-types. Healing Wish also allows Mega Heracross to regain health and recover from Status (such as Burn or Paralysis).

Hydreigon @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Dark Pulse
- Draco Meteor
- Fire Blast
- Flash Cannon / Roost

Hydreigon is a natural partner for Jirachi in terms of type synergy as well as the utility that they both provide for each other. As for what Hydreigon does for Jirachi, it is able to blow back its common switchins such as Slowbro, Ferrothorn, Scizor with the right coverage move, and provides a nice resistance to Dark/Fire/Water/Electric moves which may otherwise annoy Jirachi. And Jirachi is able to check fairies and fighting types while also being able to wear down mons faster than Hydreigon. And of course Healing Wish support is nice, meaning that you don't have to run Roost on Hydrei, although because Jirachi provides Iron Head for fairies, you certainly do have the freedom to run Roost over Flash Cannon if you really desire.

Rotom-Wash @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpA
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Volt Switch
- Hydro Pump
- Will-O-Wisp
- Pain Split

Rotom-Wash can switch into many of Jirachi's checks and fire back at them providing either support to cripple such checks or offensively with a Hydro Pump to the face. Rotom-W handles fire types such as Talonflame and Heatran, happily taking any hit they can deal and hit back with a Hydro Pump or force it out and Volt Switch to gain momentum. As an Electric/Water type, Rotom-W can easily switch into Mega Scizor and Bisharp then proceed to cripple them with a Will-O-Wisp or pick them off with Hydro Pump. With Levitate, Rotom-W can switch into ground types that would otherwise counter Jirachi such as Hippowdon, Gliscor and Landorus-Therian. Since Rotom's Ground immunity is due only to its ability, it cannot switch into Mold Breaker Excadrill so be careful of that. Jirachi helps Rotom-W a lot by being able to switch into most Grass attacks and fire back with a Fire Punch (if it had it...) or flinch them to death for added disrespect. Finally, the access to Volt Switch makes a very nice Volt-Turn core with Jirachi so you can keep momentum in your favour.

I think this is the first time I've ever posted here... hello!

EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 30 SpA
- Scald
- Secret Sword
- Hydro Pump
- Hidden Power [Grass]

Specs keldeo is a great partner for scarf jirachi, jirachi's common counters are really weak to keld( heatran, hippo, skarmory) also jirachi is a cool switch in for fairy types as mega garde, clefable, and a switch in for latios and latias, keld helps jirachi also to deal with dark types as bisharp and weavile.

Mega SD Garchomp

Garchomp @ Garchompite
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Earthquake
- Dragon Claw
- Fire Blast

Mega Garchomp uses Jirachi to check Clefable and other annoying Fairies. In return, this dragon deals with Steel types with Fire Blast (i.e. Scizor, Ferrothorn) or with Earthquake (such as Heatran). Dragon Claw is there to hit other dragons super effectively. Swords Dance allows Mega Garchomp to boost its already high Attack to astronomical levels.
Mega Garchomp has a niche over regular LO Garchomp due to its better bulk and Sand Force with all the sand around at the moment.
Healing Wish helps with the burns and the lack of recovery towards defensive teams.

A way to deal properly with Talonflame is recommended.

Charizard-Y is a nice partner for Scarf Rachi. Basically, Zard really hates things like Altaria, Dragonite, Latias, T-Tar, Terrakion and Diancie. Jirachi helps with this by being able to switch-in on and kill these threats to Zard. In return, Zard helps Rachi out by checking things like Scizor, Volcarona, Sableye, and Excadrill (other Steel-types) as well as being able to weaken threatening Ground, and Water-types with Solar Beam and Fire Blast. Furthermore, Rachi can clean up and pick off mons that Zard has weakened with its wonderful wallbreaking capabilities while providing Healing Wish support for Zard, allowing it to be used more recklessly as time and get a second chance to wallbreak.

Earthquake lets Zard lure in and kill Heatran more reliably than the innaccurate Focus Blast since Jirachi already has T-Tar covered. I'd suggest running max SpA max Spe timid to speed tie with max Manaphy, but a modest set can be used to act as more of a wallbreaker.

Garchomp is a rather fresh partner for Jirachi on the basis of it being able to weaken or outright beat a bevy of it's counters. Walls like Skarmory, Ferrothorn, and Mega Scizor are all beaten by this specific Garchomp variant due to the extra power provided by Life Orb and access to Fire Fang, which is a really nifty move. It does, however, stack a pretty nasty weakness to Electrics such as Thundurus and Weavile, so they're threats that have to be accounted for.

Pain Split / Will-o-Wisp | Overheat | Volt Switch | Thunder Wave / Will-o-Wisp

Standard Rotom-H, Jirachi has trouble with Steel-types as it lacks Fire Punch for some consistent damage on them and Talonflame which can eat a hit and fire back with Will-o-Wisp. Rotom-H provides reliable utility while being able to VoltTurn with Jirachi giving each other momentum. Rotom-H OHKOs Steel-types with Overheat and can cripple offensive Pokemon such as Latios with Thunder Wave. Pain Split gives it a form of recovery as Will-o-Wisp isn't as important as Rotom-Wash but can still be usable to burn Pokemon such as Garchomp. The EVs maximizes Rotom-H's bulk while giving it the ability to outspeed Metagross prior to mega, Breloom and Bisharp. A standard 248 HP and 252 Def is also usable if you don't care for outspeeding and need it to be a pure tank.

Jira is a natural partner for many wall breakers, and Mega Gard is one of them. This is because Jira draws in a large number of Pokemon threatened heavily by Mega Gard, like: Rotom-W, Slowbro, Tank Chomp, Gliscor, Lando-T, Hippo, and Quag. After being U-turned in by Jira, Mega Gard can come in freely and use a powerful attack to apply offensive pressure on the opposing team. Tran and Ferro are major obstacles for Jirachi, and Mega Gard is able to threaten both with a strong FB. A surprising number of teams rely on those two as their sole fairy resistance, and Mega Gard exploits this well. Apart from this all, Mega Gard can also WoW steels like Skarm, Mega Sciz, and even opposing Jira. With these Pokemon burned, your own Jira has a more realistic chance of flinching them down/winning 1v1 with Iron Head, which is definitely helpful.

Straightforward stuff overall, with these two forming your classic fairy + steel offensive combo used on various teams. Mega Gard nicely threatens the fatter builds Jira can struggle with and loves being supported by U-turn and Healing Wish to provide free switch ins and a second chance to break, respectively. Jira also takes care of checking faster offensive threats like Mega Lop and Mega Diancie for Mega Gard. The secondary Latios check Mega Gard provides is also nice for the offensive builds this core is usually on, alleviating some pressure from Jira in this regard.

Week 60 - Swords Dance Hawlucha

Hawlucha @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Unburden
EVs: 12 HP / 252 Atk / 244 Spe
Jolly Nature
- High Jump Kick
- Acrobatics
- Substitute
- Swords Dance

One of my favourite Pokemon designs and, in my opinion, one of the gems from X and Y. Hopefully we can get a bunch of great noms this week n_n

Landorus-Therian @

Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 72 Def / 184 Speed
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Swords Dance / U-turn
- Stone Edge

Defensive Swords Dance Landorus-T still tanks hits like regular defensive Landorus-T, but allows it to put more pressure on Pokemon such as Clefable which Hawlucha would tend to struggle against. Landorus-T is also immune to Thunder Wave which is also a big help for it. Landorus-T is also a strong check for strong physical attackers such as Mega Pinsir and Talonflame which both doesn't like the Attack drop from Intimidate and both are OHKO'd by Stone Edge.

Rotom-W provides a slow Volt Switch to help get Hawlucha in for free. It also checks Talonflame, Weavile and Mamoswine nicely, stopping them from RKing you before an Unburden sweep or when Unburden is no longer needed. 30 IVs in speed is just acting as an indicator for negative creep, so feel free to omit it or reverse creep further if you want to.

EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Meteor Mash
- Zen Headbutt

metagross can take care of clefable which gives hawlucha some trouble as well as other fairy-types, it can bring in ground-types and eliminate them with ice punch. it can also deal with weavile by heavily damaging it with bullet punch.

Nidoking @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Earth Power
- Sludge Wave
- Ice Beam
- Flamethrower

Nidoking is one of the true counters to Thunder Wave Clefable and can also help to weaken some of its shared checks with Hawlucha such as Slowbro, Rotom-W, Hippowdon and Thundurus. Nidoking also pressures bulkier Pokemon such as Landorus-T, Gliscor, Skarmory and Mega Scizor with its coverage.

Gengar

Gengar @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Shadow Ball

- Focus Blast
- Icy Wind

(Stolen from the dex) Gengar can effortlessly eliminate defensive threats, such as Clefable, Doublade, and Slowbro that stops Hawlucha. Gengar can also get rid of offensive threats such as Choice Scarf Landorus-T, making it significantly easier on Hawlucha to sweep in the late-game.

Shadow Ball and Sludge Wave are the dual STABs; Focus Blast is for coverage (even though Hawlucha is much more reliable to deal with Steel/Dark types). Icy Wind is here to lure Lati@s and KOing them with Shadow Ball.

Tyranitar @ Choice Band
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 100 HP / 252 Atk / 156 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Stone Edge

- Pursuit

Two of Lucha's main obstacles are Talon and Slowbro. These are both Pokemon Tar can heavily pressure/trap/kill with the appropriate move. Other annoyances to Lucha, such as Mega Manec, Zapdos, Mega Latias, and Reuniclus can also be killed, trapped, or weakened by Tar. With these Pokemon removed or sufficiently softened up by Tar, Lucha has a much easier time doing its thing. Tar's ability to draw in and directly weaken Pokemon like Lando-T, Tank Chomp, and Skarm is also useful because they each annoy Lucha in one way or another. Clef is another Pokemon Tar can punch large holes into, and this all aids Lucha's sweep in the long term. Apart from taking advantage of the help described, Lucha can also take advantage of Pokemon like Mega Hera, Keld, and Loom (all common revenge killers to Tar) to sub up, SD, and proceed from there.

Overall, Tar provides varied amounts of help here, handling a good mix of offensive and defensive obstacles for Hawlucha. I think Tar is a particularly effective partner because it's actually able to, via trapping, eliminate from a game many of the Pokemon Hawlucha needs gone before being able to properly sweep. Things like Slowbro and friends aren't always easy to remove from a match due to their general bulk and longevity. As such, having a consistent Pokemon like Tar to remove them reliably is very useful. This is especially the case here because Hawlucha is really weak in general and usually needs to be paired with a strong breaker to pressure the defensive roadblocks it's unable to muscle through alone. With a mixture of brute force, bulk, and resistances, CB Tar fulfills this role by pressuring the several psychic and electric types Lucha is bothered by, all while softening up other pests like Lando-T and Skarm. Tar is a good choice all in all and works together nicely with other common partners like Rotom-W to cover Lucha's weaknesses and pave the way for its sweep.

Assuming the extra speed to cover threats like Thund-I and Mega Pinsir is more desirable than the strength to break through things better, it's worth nothing Scarf Tar can be used over Band variants to provide much of the same support but with less emphasis on power. This will mostly depend on your team.

Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
IVs: 29 HP

- Low Kick / Swords Dance / Pursuit

some of the stuff hawlucha struggles against like talonflame, speedy electrics, and clef are probably gonna be easily handled by general glue mons on a build like chomp, lando-t, jirachi, mega scizor, latios, etc.. however, offensive threats like thundurus-i and tornadus-t are harder to deal with typically. weavile can handle these two offensive threats with ease thanks to its speed and powerful ice coverage. on the side of defensive checks to hawlucha, weavile helps to take down annoying bulky grounds that wall hawlucha like landorus-t, tankchomp, and gliscor, it helps against annoying fat psychic types like mew and slowbro, and it helps with lesser-used walls to hawlucha like zapdos and doublade (needs to be weakened a bit for knock to kill).

in general, hawlucha appreciates a speedy offensive pokemon to support its potential set-up. if hawlucha sets up mid-game, it appreciates a fast pokemon to clean after it puts a dent in a team, and if hawlcua sets up end-game, it appreciates a speedy, strong pokemon to deal enough damage for it to sweep efficiently. weavile works effectively in both these situations: weavile can deal nice damage & it has priority to clean end-game, and mid-game it can inflict serious damage with sets like band and SD. also, pursuit can be used against fat psychics i guess, but it doesn't really have much application here particularly imo :x.

in the beginning, i brought up how a lot of the common hawlucha answers are typically handled by other members of the team through glue mons. assuming you'll be building around hawlucha + (matchmaking pokemon), weavile provides something a bit clearer to build around than one of these general glue mons. it handles some of the more difficult to handle offensive checks to hawlucha while covering a good chunk of what can wall it (with exceptions like physdef unaware clef and mega sab), and it supports hawlucha setting up by either dealing damage mid-game for hawlucha to sweep, or cleaning up after a mid-game set-up by hawlucha.
