Anything goes

getting a quick WIP up to beat the deadline

Overview
########
  • Absurdly bulky
  • Great offensive and support movepool
  • Three amazing abilities
  • Gets BoltBeam coverage
  • Only one weakness
  • Is completely crippled by the likes of Trick and Knock Off which remove its Eviolite
  • Slow, though that can work in its favor with Analytic
Tank
########
name: Tank
move 1: Tri Attack
move 2: Ice Beam
move 3: Discharge / Thunderbolt
move 4: Recover
ability: Download / Analytic
item: Eviolite
evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpA
nature: Modest

Moves
========
  • Standard Porygon2
  • Tri Attack powerful STAB especially after a Download boost
  • BoltBeam coverage
  • Discharge is better for the nifty 30% chance to paralyze, though Thunderbolt is good for more power
  • Recover reliable recovery

Set Details
========
  • EVs and nature allow it to function as a bulky attacker
  • Eviolite is a no-brainer for bulk
  • Download is great for an immediate +1 in Special Attack if it switches in to the right Pokemon, though it can be unreliable
  • Analytic is a good ability to take advantage of Porygon2's poor Speed stat and also to punish switches (Thunderbolt should be used with Analytic, since the speed drop will effectively weaken Porygon2's attacks)
  • Trace can be used to completely wall select threats like Chandelure

Usage Tips
========
  • Switches into many attacks with relative ease
  • Don't switch it into something obscenely powerful like a Band Victini V-create or Specs Hydreigon Draco Meteor; that'll only wear down Porygon2 fast
  • Fairly obvious but never switch it into a Fighting-type attack
  • Watch for what Pokemon Porygon2 can grab the +1 SpA boost with Download from; Pokemon that are obviously more invested in physical defense like Slowbro are fairly obvious
  • Remember that Porygon2 is extremely slow so don't wait until its hanging on by 10% HP to use Recover

Team Options
========
  • Status absorber or cleric support; Porygon2 hates getting statused because it has no passive recovery, and really hampers its survivability
  • Something to handle powerful Fighting-types like Heracross
  • Physically offensive wallbreakers to break through special walls like Florges that Porygon2 has trouble with
  • Entry hazards make it significantly easier to KO opposing Pokemon, and Sticky Web is great with Download and Trace for allowing Porygon2 to potentially outpace normally faster Pokemon, though it should not be used with Analytic

Specially Defensive
########
name: Specially Defensive
move 1: Toxic / Thunder Wave
move 2: Ice Beam
move 3: Discharge / Thunderbolt
move 4: Recover
ability: Trace
item: Eviolite
evs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 SpD
nature: Calm

Moves
========
  • Toxic wears down defensive walls/tanks; Thunder Wave cripples offensive threats
  • zomg BoltBeam coverage
  • Discharge is better for the nifty 30% chance to paralyze, though Thunderbolt is good for more power
  • Recover = reliable recovery

Set Details
========
  • EVs inclined towards special defense to reliably wall threats like Chandelure, Hydreigon, and Nidoking
  • Trace is useful at times to completely wall select threats like Chandelure, or to use to its advantage in niche situations (Sheer Force boosts the power of Porygon2's BoltBeam when it switches into Nidoking, for example)
  • only use eviolite lol

Usage Tips
========
  • Use Recover often; Porygon2 is slow
  • Watch for Pokemon with abilities that Porygon2 can take advantage of, like the aformentioned Chandelure and Nidoking

Team Options
========

Physically Defensive
########
name: Physically Defensive
move 1: Toxic / Thunder Wave
move 2: Ice Beam
move 3: Discharge / Thunderbolt
move 4: Recover
ability: Trace
item: Eviolite
evs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
nature: Bold

Moves
========

Set Details
========
  • EVs inclined towards physical defense to reliably wall threats like Rhyperior and Snorlax
  • Trace is useful at times to gain some nifty abilities to help it in niche situations
  • only use eviolite lol

Usage Tips
========
  • Use Recover often; Porygon2 is slow
  • Great for pivoting into moderately powerful physical attacks or even switching into U-turn and taking minimal damage

Team Options
========

Trick Room
########
name: Trick Room
move 1: Trick Room
move 2: Recover
move 3: Thunderbolt / Tri Attack
move 4: Ice Beam / Tri Attack
ability: Download / Trace
item: Eviolite
evs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD
nature: Quiet
ivs: 0 Spe

Moves
========
  • Trick Room to set up Trick Room (duh)
  • Recover for reliable recovery
  • BoltBeam coverage
  • Can choose to give up an attack for STAB Tri Attack
  • Really has 4MSS because it wants BoltBeam and STAB and Recover

Set Details
========
  • IVs and Nature make Porygon2 as slow as possible to abuse Trick Room
  • EVs make it a good bulky attacker
  • Eviolite is eviolite (do i need to explain this again)
  • Download can get Porygon2 a +1 SpA boost if it switches into the right Pokemon, though Trace can help it completely wall select threats like Chandelure with Flash Fire; basically any ability but Analytic is good (Pory2 will be moving first a lot after TR).

Usage Tips
========
  • Set up Trick Room any time it is not active to support Trick Room team
  • Should only be used in Trick Room teams, as Porygon2 is great at supporting them
  • Use Recover often to keep Porygon2 alive, so it can come back and reset Trick Room if necessary

Team Options
========
  • Status absorber or cleric support; Porygon2 hates getting statused because it has no passive recovery, and really hampers its survivability
  • Something to handle powerful Fighting-types like Heracross
  • Physically offensive wallbreakers to break through special walls like Florges that Porygon2 has trouble with
  • Trick Room sweepers to abuse TR
  • All entry hazards bar Sticky Web are useful

Other Options
########
  • Charge Beam
  • Shadow Ball
  • Psych Up
Checks & Counters
########
  • Knock Off
  • Fighting-types
  • Trick / Switcheroo
  • Status
  • Taunt users
  • Bulky Steel-types
  • Something to hit it really goddamn hard (Banded Victini V-create, etc.), especially when it's already been weakened

Command + F eviolite = 1 result in the OP. Seriously, add eviolite to the main set. Never use Porygon2 without an eviolite, it's one of the only reasons it is UU.

You consider adding more defensive sets ? Porygon2 bulk is as you mentioned absurd when invested. I checked some calcs on Smogon calculator out of curiosity. Max HP/Max SpD

Timid Sheer Force Life Orb Focus Blast Nidoking
44.3 - 52.9%

Taking into account how unreliable Focus Blast is (and it's not first coverage pick for Nidoking), I would say this is looking good. In case Nidoking doesn't carry Focus Blast...

Timid Sheer Force Life Orb Sludge Wave Nidoking
26.4 - 31.2%

Yeah, it's not impressing Porygon2 at all.

Timid Life Orb Max SpA Hydreigon Draco Meteor
35.8 - 42.7%

Timid Life Orb 4 Atk Superpower Hydreigon
45.9 - 54.2%

Those are probably two strongest hits which Hydreigon may pull off according to most used sets in UU. While SuperPower kind of hurts, it's still safe enough to Recover damage after attack drop. Physically based Mixed attacker can give this set trouble though, but it's still managable.

252 Atk Life Orb Hydreigon Outrage
43 - 51%

With SR this is a problem, but without it you still can switch off and have more than enough health to regenerate it back with this ridiculous bulk. Just carry Steel type and/or Fairy type in such case. I think Porygon2 with mixed defensive investment should work as well. Let's continue.

Max SpA Timid Analytic Hydro Pump Starmie
38.77%-45.99%

Max SpA Timid Analytic Psyshock
41.18%-48.93%

While with SR up Psyshock has a pretty high chance to 2HKO, use the same strategy as with Outrage from Hydreigon. Porygon2 is pretty good hard check to Starmie.

252 SpA Neutral Nature Ice Beam Life Orb Kyurem
25.9 - 30.4%

4 Atk Life Orb Outrage
40.9 - 48.9%

252 SpA Life Orb Draco Meteor
36.8 - 43.8%

Specs Draco Meteor
42.5 - 50%

Etc. Etc.

In other words when it goes to special walling Porygon2 with investment is one heck of a wall, which is also capable of handling good mixed wallbreakers as a bonus as well. Physical spread should be as viable depending on your needs ;).

Thunderbolt is better than Discharge. Change the slash order.

Also lol Trace is so much better than its other abilities. Why is it not even on the set?

Add a specially defensive set.

Specially Defensive

move 3: Toxic / Tri Attack
move 4: Recover

No discharge is better due to the paralysis chance and it isn't really that much less powerful

Anything goes
Download and Analytic are on the Tank set for power, though I agree that defensive sets should get Trace

I'm planning to have sets of Tank > Physically Defensive > Specially Defensive > Trick Room. Any objections with that?

Specially Defensive > Physically Defensive, it checks all the special attackers, lots of random physical stuff runs Knock Off or has Fighting-type moves.

Anything goes
Noted the above; Due to Specially Defensive seeming to be better, I might just make a Specially Defensive set with a physically defensive EV spread suggestion in set comments, since they run basically the same moves anyways. Thoughts?

No, because Physically Defensive checks an entirely different set of Pokemon, switches in on different things, has different partners, etc.

Ok. I'd remove the physically defensive set. Normal-types are better being specially defensive because most Fighting-types are physical and they you will have a hard time taking their hits.

Also you can remove 'ability:' for the first set. It can honestly run any of the three and still work well, and when that is the case it does not need to be included.

Physically defensive counters victini, darmanitan, and mienshao (kinda) well, it should stay or be in set details for the specially defensive

Analytic is always the best ability on Porygon2, it should stay

analytic is not always the best ability, especially if you are running twave / discharge and your opponent outslows you that way.

i'll just leave it the way it is now, if some QC could drop by and leave feedback that'll be great :]
