Looking through this RBY forum has given me a sense of nostalgia. The point in this thread is simple: post your team, and tell others why you picked each Pokemon. Nothing fancy, but I think it'd be nice.

[IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

The strategy in my team here was simple. As a young kid, 4-6 years old, all I knew was: attack, attack attack. A weakness! Switch out! Send in counter to type!

Imo, this team isn't all that bad for its time and considering my age. Decent survivability and overwhelming attack power. I used only my favorites, although I disliked Slowbro for its pinkness at the time. Only reason I used it was because a friend who moved away traded it to me.XD

Blastoise - I used it because its cover art in my cousins Blue version - I had yellow, made me think Blastoise was all powerful. he was badass.

Alakazam - First Pokemon ever raised to lvl 100. After battling Sabrina and seeing her uber zam recovery and attack pwr, I decided to catch an abra and raise it, as I had a team of 5 at that time.

Raichu - Heh, I traded Pikachu to a friends Red version to see it would still follow me as Raichu. This, and Pika annoyed me, not wanting to evolve. I got a fast and powerful electric type in the end, although Raichu no longer followed me.:(

Dragonite - Seeing a friend fight Lance made me go out, catch a Dratini, and raise it. Truly excruciating it was to level it, I must say. My flyer.

Slowbro - As stated above, in my team only because a friend traded it to me. I got attached to using it after awhile, Curse pwned most teams.XD

Snorlax - The tank. Back then, Snorlax would never die. I liked resting in my opponents face as laxes then enormous health went to max. Paralysis with Body Slam and high attacked helped too.

Snorlax and Zam would make it to my Gold team later on as well.:)

Blastoise, Victreebell, Fearow, Nidoking, Mew, and Tauros.

My team was mostly either my favorite Pokemon, Pokemon to be different from my brother, hard to get Pokemon and Pokemon to kill the Elite 4.

Exeggutor
~ Sleep Powder
~ Psychic
~ Mega Drain
~ Explosion

Exeggutor, I felt, was a good lead to most likely gain the upperhand with Sleep Powder. Dual STAB and Explosion are just obvious choices (and the best ones). I sometimes tried Stune Spore, but prefered two attacks most of the time.

Gengar
~ Hypnosis
~ Explosion
~ Thunderbolt
~ Mega Drain

Gengar provided Normal-type immunity to get away from Explosion and Tauros (when predicted) and a secondary sleep inducer. A quick Explosion was often priceless and the other attacking moves were just the best available. Psychic was sometimes thrown in to allow me the KO on other Gengar more easily, but I found this best.

Chansey
~ Softboiled
~ Ice Beam
~ Thunderbolt
~ Thunder Wave

Chansey is just here to stop the likes of Alakazam or any special attackers without Explosion. Thunder Wave was often important to stopping sweepers, and Softboiled is needed to keep Chansey alive. Thunderbolt is one of the better special attacks available, while Ice Beam was good to hope for the freeze on opposing Chansey as well as predicted switches to Ground-types or the likes of Exeggutor.

Alakazam
~ Psychic
~ Thunder Wave
~ Recover
~ Seismic Toss

Even more paralysis was brought to the table from Alakazam, as it's just so important. STAB Psychic is hard to stop in RBY, and Recover allows Alakazam to stick around for a while. I often went for Seismic Toss to be able to damage more opponents (such as Exeggutor), but Reflect sometimes proved useful in the last slot.

Starmie
~ Surf
~ Ice Beam
~ Thunderbolt
~ Recover

Starmie was another fast Pokémon I'd chosen, and even though it worked in a similar way to most of my other Pokémon, it was always needed. Out-speeding Tauros was a great benefit a lot of the time, and the reason why Surf is in the moveset to cause as much damage to Tauros as possible. Starmie also provided a bit of insurance against other threats to try and freeze them.

Tauros
~ Body Slam
~ Hyper Beam
~ Earthquake
~ Blizzard

Let's face it, Tauros is RBY. My late game sweeper would often breeze through broken, paralyzed teams with its raw offensive power. There's not much to say here. Body Slam is a great move, the paralysis can help if my opponent has anything that isn't already paralysed and can't be OHKOed by Hyper Beam. If I could OHKO with Hyper Beam, then I obviously would so I didn't have to waste a turn recharging. Earthquake hits Gengar and Rock-types, while Blizzard is good against the likes of Exeggutor.

[IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

That's what I found myself using most of the time :)

My team consisted of (and still does) Gengar, Starmie, Tauros, Alakazam, Rhydon, and Exeggutor.

I'm starting to consider trading Rhydon for something like Snorlax or Chansey. I feel like Snorlax has the power to stop a late game Tauros sweep when the rest of the team is damaged.

Jynx
Lovely Kiss
Psychic
Blizzard
Substitute

I love her, she was sweet, Sleep, then attack. with Psychic and Ice attack, nothing really resist this, but normal Pokemon and Ice Pokemon, I could use her for anything, with her fast sleep attack and protection for statues I could get some quick Critical hit's in

http://pokemonelite2000.com/gby124.gif
Hypno
Thunder Wave
Seismic Toss
Substitute / Psychic
Rest / Psychic / Reflect

I really hated Alakazam. I mean I hated that everybody used him, so I kept with my Hypno. I don't remember the final moveset, but I do remember it was something like that, I didn't have a STAb on him, because he could just absorb special and physical attacks and then rest them off. Reflect stopped Earthquake and Drill Pecks, while I Tossed them to death.

http://pokemonelite2000.com/gby144.gif
Articuno
Reflect
Ice Beam
Blizzard
Rest

I finally learned from JMC, this was the only Pokemon who could use 2 stabbed moves of the same type, because it's movepool was so bad. I originally, had Toxic, Fly, Substitute, Ice Beam. But eventually people started to figure it out and really, I just needed to do major damage, Reflect helped with it's defense if it got paralyzed or put to sleep. I could just Rest if off in the end.

http://pokemonelite2000.com/gby113.gif
Chansey
Thunder Wave
Seismic Toss
Softboiled
Ice Beam / Minimize

Again, I love Seismic Toss, and I could do decent damage and 4 hit KO everything, and heal up. Ice Beam was for Rock/Ground types which had HP and Pokemon to freeze.

http://pokemonelite2000.com/gby094.gif
Gengar
Hypnosis
Seismic Toss / Night Shade
Thunderbolt
Explosion / Substitute

I really like Gengar, he was just so useful against Normal attacks, and how many resistances it had, fighting, normal, and grass, etc, Only really Psychic Pokemon could take it down, Rhydon and Golem could, if it didn't have Mega Drain, I just like Seismic Toss for straight damage from things that can't Recover or Rest. and then I could just Explode on Chansey or when I was low on health, Sub and Toss was annoying for some people if they couldn't take down the Sub, which was weak, but once it was up, it could do some nice damage. Even Confuse Ray with that was annoying

http://pokemonelite2000.com/gby128.gif
Tauros
Body Slam
Hyper Beam
Earthquake
Thunder / Blizzard

I just broke down and ended up using him, I didn't really like him, because he was so broken in R/B/Y, and there really wasn't much that could take it him down. I think eventually the inter net said Cloyster or something that can paralyze and then explode or using a special attack on it, since it's special defense wasn't that good even though they didn't have special defense back then, I used Thunder once in a while for water types, but in the end Blizzard was better depending on your metagame

My old team on Yellow had Pikachu, Blastoise, Venosaur, Charizard, Pidgeot, and Machoke.

I never had anyone to trade or battle with, so...

I think I chose the first 4 because I thought the game would be easy with all the starters. Pidgeot was probally mostly for Fly, and Machoke for a fighting type to round it out.

Mew:

Psychic
Bubblebeam
Thunderbolt
Fire Blast

I didn't know about ubers at the time, so don't flame me for using this :O Obtained using the Mew Glitch. Yes, I know the moveset is suckish, but what do you expect? I was 6 at the time. All I knew was "type-coverage" and "Psychic-types kill everything". Often 3-0'd stuff in Pokemon Stadium's Gym Leader Castle.

Charizard
:

Flamethrower
Dig
Fly
Slash

My second sweeper. Flamethrower wasn't a TM at the time, and I used to think the Dig-Fly combo was pwnage. Slash was used to get Critical Hit almost every single time.

Venusaur:

Razor Leaf
Cut
Body Slam
Leech Seed

'twas my Cut-slave. Razor Leaf to abuse CH again. Overall my least favorite Pokemon here. Only reason I picked it was because I thought it was cool to have all three starters.

Blastoise:

Surf
Ice Beam
Seismic Toss
Strength

My surfer, self-explanatory. Ice Beam for taking out those annoying Dragons. Seismic Toss for killing weak stuff. Surf for STAB, and Strength for use as a semi-HM slave.

Raichu:

Thunderbolt
Swift
Seismic Toss
Thunder Wave

I blatantly refused to put Flash on this guy. Raichu is probably the only Pokemon on this team with any strategy other than "Kill, kill, kill". T-Wave for Paralyzing stuff, Thunderbolt for a main attack, and Seismic Toss and Swift for stable options. I loved Raichu, since its Special stat was often high enough to survive a beastly Special attack. Plus high speed meant good CH ratio.

Snorlax:

Rock Slide
Earthquake
Fire Punch
Psychic

I imported it to Crystal to learn Fire Punch. What a mistake >,> Seriously, Psychic did less damage on a Hitmonlee than Earthquake, and Hitmonlee had a shit Special stat at the time. Plus it was really slow. However, it was bulky enough to take multiple hits before fainting, so it was still okay.

"Dornk" the Pikachu:
-Thunderbolt
-Thunder
-Light Screen
-Slam
My original starter. After the first gym, this thing owned (it was level 35 by then)

"Gyazz" the Gyarados
-Surf
-Dragon Rage
-Ice Beam
-Hyper Beam
This was the first non-bug pokemon I evolved. After it evolved, it became the second best pokemon on my team after Pikachu.

"Veny" the Venusaur
-Cut
-Razor Leaf
-Solar Beam
-Sleep Powder
This was my 2nd pokemon to reach level 100, and basically shared time with Gyarados to kill Rocks and Grounds. This guy single handedly got me threw the last gym.

"Digly" the Dugtrio
-Earthquake
-Dig
-Fissure
-Toxic
I caught these guys to beat Lt. Surge because Pikachu and Gyarados sucked against him. I beat him with one dig, which made me very proud.

"Zeepy" the Hypno
-Mega Kick
-Tri Attack
-Metronome
-Psychic
This thing was recruited for my team after I couldn't beat Giovanni's Nidoking. I had no one to trade with, so I couldn't get Alakazam, but Zeepy did just fine.

"Foxov" the Fearow
-Drill Peck
-Fly
-Sky Attack
-Mirror Move
This was the saddest story of all my pokemon. The one time I ever met someone with another game, they had just restarted. They wanted my help, so I let them borrow my team for awhile. They gave them all back, except Foxov so they could Fly. The very next day, they lost their game, and Foxov got lost too. The ironic thing is, that I resarted my yellow once, and assuming that they never found it/restared it, Foxov will have survived the longest of all my pokemon.

Gengar, Jolteon, Rhydon, Aerodactyl, Vaporeon and Starmie.
Was mainly my In game team as I wasn't into competitive battling until the ADV Generation.
I thought this thing was really cool, Main use was to kill things with thunderbolt/Megadrain, sleep an opposing pokemon, and blow up on the switch in.
I really liked all of the Eevee evolution back when I was 13 or so, This guy could paralyze my opponents pokemon , Kill lots of things with Thunderbolt and outspeed just as much.
I liked jolteon, but he just seemed really annoying, and thunderbolt also seemed to be everywhere so I used this guy. Slow but really hard hitting and with his great def and electric immunity he was useful as hell.
All I knew was: OMG huge critical hit rate, and it was fast.
Lots of hp, giant substitutes and Strong Hydro pumps and surfs were always welcome on my team.
This thing could heal itself, use water and thunder attacks AND paralyze things? I just thought that was awesome at the time.

Kind of nooby reasons, But I wasn't really into pokemon back then.

The following team is what I remember from my Yellow version:
My starter, used it all through out the game except for the E4.

I like Pidgeot, and I've always catched Pidgey from the start. (for a period of time, a fly slave)

Grass-type, and spreads status (mostly using Sleep Powder)

Water-type, and Strength slave.

Fire-type, Fly and Cut slave.

Swapped Pikachu with this for the E4. Also a Fly slave.

Yeah, pretty noobish, but who wasn't? :P.

Blastoise, Alakazam, Gengar, Marowak, Dragonite, and Arcanine.

They were the most baass looking pokemon in the game (yes, even Draggy looks cool then), and not only that, they were super powerful. Marowak became something I sought for as soon as I beat the dead mother in Lavendar Town.

I havent technically retired from RBY. Also, I always liked to change my team up as much as possible, but if there was a starting point from which I would make chances it would be something like:
Gengar, Zam, Exeggutor, Chansey, Snorlax, Tauros

The sets would be more or less standard, Kinesis Zam, DoublePowder Eggy, Hypnosis/tbolt/megadrain/explosion Gengar. I used the team basically because I liked to win. Gengar has always been a personal favourite as the first episode I ever saw was one of the tower ones.. I was always pretty eager to fit it in whenever possible. It also sometimes made Tauros's and Laxes EQ at times they really ought to bodyslam, which can be a huge asset in an rby game. The rest is straight out of standard.

Have a nice day.

My main team, was used in many school tournaments and it won me a few. Mew was obtained using Mew glitch and most double TM moves where got with the item glitch.

-Fire Spin
-Slash

Charizard (/Charmander) was just the coolest starter. He is a fire type so give him lots of fire moves, right? Oh and Slash to hit water types...
Never put any second thought on this moveset. Lol.

-Razor Leaf
-Solar Beam
-Leech Seed
-Sleep Powder

I had blue and red edition. I played on blue and traded a Bulbasaur over from red, before I gave the game to my brother to play :) I just thought I would definitely need a grass type and all others sucked. Solar Beam because it's the best grass move, right?

-Surf
-Hydro Pump
-Ice Beam
-Toxic

To me the best evolution of Evee and up until today in every ingame team I can get hold of an Evee. Obviously give him water moves and ice also fits a water type... Toxic was there because I had the TM left over I believe.

-Body Slam
-Hyper Beam
-Substitute
-Horn Drill

Well for one it's a motherfucking dragon. And also Lance used it and it was featured in the first movie. I don't know at which time I picked it up to be in my team~ Hyper Beam because it just fits this mo'fo'. Horn Drill because I wanted to have one OHKO on my team. Substitute because of fun.

-Psychic
-Swift
-Thunder Bolt
-Recover

Well, obviously you had to have Mewtwo in your team! I guess except for Swift, the moves are not bad either. Swift was on it, because it looked freaking cool! Also, my Mewtwo had one of the worst stats ever. He was about 60 HP short to my friends Mewtwos... (Can't remember the other stats)

-Fly
-Wing Attack
-???
-???

He was like, a flying dinosaur that you get out of some old stone and stuff. Epic! I don't remember all of his moves... He was later replaced by Mew.
I still liked him but he had really crappy moves as well and it died from every other attack...

-Psychic
-Tri Attack
-Fly
-Seismic Toss

Well, Mew replaced my fellow Aerodactyl, because I didn't want to kick anything else out and my Aero died all the time. This also explains why it has fly, I needed a Pokébro to fly me around ingame! Also I want to note, that I always considered this Mew legal. I traded it from a friend who told me it was legally caught (how I don't remember) and I gave a great load of Pokis to get it...
Now for the attacks, omg I don't even know. Psychic was okay, STAB. Tri Attack... I guess I wanted to see it, and never gave it any other move. Seismic Toss because, uh, it does damage?

To sum it up, there is only one thing to say:

I was still fairly young when I moved from RBY to GSC, so as a result, the party I had at the time was pretty darn noobish by today's standards. For the most part, my main goal within the game was to complete my Pokedex, so I spent a lot of time training random pokes in the unknown dungeon in order to evolve them. As a result, while my Pokemon had pretty garbage movesets, they ended up being pretty decently leveled by the end, so it hardly mattered:

- Tackle
- Razor Leaf
- Solar Beam
- Sleep Powder

For some reason, I always felt that I should keep Tackle... maybe because I felt I needed a normal move or because of its PP. Don't ask. After a while, I wanted to replace it, but by then I had used all my TMs, and Venusaur can't learn anything better from the Celadon Department shop or from HMs (fuck Cut). It didn't really matter though, because my Venusaur was at level 92, and I usually just spammed Razor Leaf with it anyway. I don't think I ever used Solar Beam.

- Peck
- Ice Beam
- Fly
- Blizzard

I used an Articuno, which was about at level 70. I kept Peck for more or less the same reason as Tackle on Venusaur, and the legendary birds have tiny learnsets anyway. Keeping both Ice Beam and Blizzard is actually a viable tactic in-game, because a lot of the post game consists of Unknown dungeon runs. All in all, this was probably one of my most reliable pokes overall.

- Thundershock
- Drill Peck
- Fly
- Thunder

From what I understand, like Articuno's this is a pretty common in-game noob moveset. Like Articuno, I ended the game with it about at level 70. To be honest, I never really liked Zapdos as much as Articuno, even if it had a much cooler (ha, ha, ha) back sprite. It underperformed against the Rhydons in the Unknown dungeon and Thunder was an annoying move to use due to its miss rate.

- Surf
- Aurora Beam
- Clamp
- Spike Cannon

Mainly used as my token Surfer. I evolved this Cloyster at a very low level--I'm talking around 28 or so. The old Pokemon handbook kind of hyped up Spike Cannon for some weird reason, so I was quite excited when I finally got Cloyster to level 50. I'm not sure how far I leveled this thing after 50, but I'm pretty sure it never quite reached 60. All in all, it could hold its own in the unknown dungeon and a little against the Elite Four, but otherwise it really had nothing on Articuno and Zapdos.

- Solarbeam
- Sleep Powder
- Bind
- Cut

The Tangela I used was the one you get by trading on Cinnabar. It had the default nickname "Crinkles," which I have to admit, is actually a pretty fitting name for a Tangela. Like Cloyster, I mainly kept this around because it knew a vital HM move, which was in this case, Cut. However, I still leveled it by and by, and at the end, it had reached somewhere in the high 40s. I think it was 46. Also, in retrospect, Sleep Powder and Bind was actually a pretty useful catching mechanism.

- Surf
- Blizzard
- Dragon Rage
- Hyper Beam

I'm actually not totally sure if that was my Dragonite's moveset, but it was something along those lines. Dragon Rage and Hyper Beam were definitely there. The reason for my hazy memory is simply that my last slot was usually taken up by some underevolved/untrained Pokemon that was being trained in the Unknown dungeon. I only ever really took Dragonite out for novelty reasons once I got him to 55. Still, in the eyes of someone young like me, Dragonite was basically the strongest, or at least the most prestigious Pokemon you could obtain in the original games, bar Mew. I used Dragon Rage much for the same reason as Cloyster's Spike Cannon. Dragon Rage used to be ridiculously hyped up in promotional material (and in the cartoon), which looking back, is another indicator of Gamefreak's ignorance about the mechanics of competitive battling.

Anyway yeah, that was my team. It's a pity that old file isn't around anymore, because it might have been fun to go back and look at it. It had a nearly complete Pokedex and a load of box Pokemon, if nothing else.

i cant say i ever had a certain strategy in mind except to ATTACK! ATTACK!
and i cant recall every move i used but went something like this:

Psychic
Hypnosis
?
?

thats all i remember but of him but i always loved hypno simply because i was the only kid in my neighbor hood that used it!

Surf
Strength
Thunderbolt
Earthquake

I loved Nidoking but my bro always used it, so i always went with nidoqueen.

Surf
Ice Beam
Skull Bash?
Bubble Beam

Blastoise was one of my favorites and when i got squirtle in yellow i always ditched pikachu for it. :D

Thunder
Thunderbolt
Fly
Drill peck

Loved Zapados he was so cool back in the day.

Ice beam
Blizzard
Fly
?

Cant remember all its moves but those are the 3 i chose. Always liked articuno and blastoise facing of lance together(with help from zapados against his gyarados of course)

Fly
Seismic toss
Cut
Fire spin

Mainly used it because of its pokemon card. EVERYONE WANTED A CHARZARD. if you got one in a booster pack, all us kids went ape shit. youd be some kind of god until u lost it or traded it to an older kid for something he made seem really good(traded one for a Rocket's Zapados...) xD

all in all it was all about my favorites back then and i missed that feeling of adventure that seemed to die since then. (G/S, Ruby/sapphire, DP i feel more like an Errand boy in the game)
