Practice Ground Gym Match - Leader Its_A_Random vs. Challenger Athenodoros

Status
Not open for further replies.
As Athenodoros walks into the arena with some of his powerful Water types and his trusty Dragonite, Its_A_Random must feel at least a bit lucky that this is not an official Gym match.

IAR's Team: Hippowdon/Gliscor/Gastrodon/Garchomp/Colossoil/Torterra/Camerupt/Fidgit
Arena: Earth Mausoleum
Field Type: Ground
Complexity: Intense
Format: All

Restrictions: No Natural Grass, Only Sandstorm & Clear weather permitted, Poorly-lit Indoor arena

Description: The Earth Mausoleum is a dark, desolate place inside a cave situated in a remote desert about 6km from the nearest city. At the entrace, you must proceed down a tunnel that is fairly dark, but is loaded to the gills with harmless Ground Type Pokemon, predominately Hippopotas & Sandshrew, even the occasional Garchomp lurking about the place. After your short walk through a prescribed route, you walk into a large, fairly well lit indoors arena, that looked very dull, but one thing's obvious; This was a Ground Type Paradise...
This arena has virtually the same dimensions as the ASB Tournament arena, but with a few differences. Firstly, the arena has mini-grandstands at the side, & the trainers stand on a Podium elevated up by 3 metres. Lastly, the arena ceiling is rather low at only 20m high.
Now, what does this arena have that gives Ground Types an edge? Firstly, The main arena floor is a hybrid of sand & dirt, mixed together to make a strange material that can easily be dug into. Additionally, the ceiling is low & creates a completely indoor feel, where Moves that require sunlight, like Solarbeam, & all other weathers bar Clear & Sandstorm, fail. Additionally, Pokemon using Sky Drop/Fly/Bounce fail to gain enough altitude to evade, that is, they become a normal attack. Next, there is a fairly large mud patch near the centre of the arena at about 10 metres in diameter, & goes to about 10 metres deep. This mud patch has a little bit of water in it, but enough to be considered an external water source, but in using it, the attack becomes combined with mud & becomes a Ground Type Attack. Additionally, anyone using the patch to dive are still vulnerable to seismic moves & get hit for double power.
Being a Ground Type paradise, how will the average player fare? We shall see soon enough...

Mechanics:
  • Mud patches around the arena have enough water to be considered usable as an external Water Source.
However, all the mud means that such attacks become Ground Type moves.
These attacks can still be nullified by Storm Drain.
Any Pokemon hiding in Mud Patches through the use of moves like Dive can also be affected by seismic moves at x2 Power.
  • Sky Drop, Fly, & Bounce all do not gain altitutde to successfully evade attacks, that is, they instead become 0 Priority attacks

Summary: Ground Type Paradise.

This place is a paradise? It's all muddy! I just hope my nice referee uniform doesn't get too dirty from the Pokemon splashing the mud everywhere. Well, it is a paradise for creatures of the earth... Anyway, onto the match!

First, let's look at the Gym leader's team:

An average of 79 moves per mon? Holy shit! (btw Slowking has 117 moves, not 177) This is going to be one good fight! Will the arena and larger selection of Pokemon be enough to give Its_A_Random the edge he needs against as tough a challenger as Athenodoros?

Now, to toss the coin to see who sends out his Pokemon first (good thing I have a quarter in my pocket). Heads is Its_A_Random, tails is Athenodoros:

Official Smogon Know-It-All
To be honest, I'm not sure where to go here. I think I'll just have to go with the old faithfuls:

Dragonite @ Expert Belt | Slowking @ Expert Belt

And I feel like I've had this battle a few times before...

Slowking: Reflect ~ Blizzard ~ Blizzard
Dragonite: Ice Beam (Fidgit) ~ Blizzard ~ Ice Beam (Fidgit)

IF Fidgit uses Taunt, Slowking uses Magic Coat and move actions along
IF Hippowdon uses Yawn (Dragonite), Dragonite uses Susbtitute (25) if he doesn't already have a substitute
IF Fidgit uses Light Screen, Dragonite uses Brick Break (Hippowdon) ~ Ice Beam (Fidgit) ~ Blizzard, subbing on the following actions if applicable
IF Hippowdon uses Yawn (Slowking), Slowking uses Magic Coat and pushes actions along

And that's what happens when substitution order matters.

Also js my Pokemon average 84 moves jsyk

Sandstorm (permanent)

The four Pokemon are out on the field, and a sandstorm is already whipping up. With the trainers on their podiums and giving commands, the first round starts! Utilitand is quick to dig a tunnel underground with his many hands, narrowly avoiding a strong ice attack shot by Nidhogg. Stortamus launches large rocks at Athenodoros' side of the field, hurting Nidhogg and Nestor, so much so that Nestor does nothing but flinches from the rocks. Utilitand suddenly pops up from the ground directly underneath Nestor, knocking Nestor to the ground. Utilitand suddenly stretches out all of his hands in front of Stortamus and braces himself. Nidhogg and Nestor both launch as much snow and ice as they can at the protective Utilitand, but pointlessly. Stortamus then crawls up to Nestor and takes a big, nasty, painful-looking bite. Utilitand once again acts preemptively and burrows underground, yet again to just barely dodge a beam from Nidhogg. Stortamus follows his friend into the underground tunnel, while Nestor futilely attacks Its_A_Random's side of the field with more ice and snow. Utilitand, closely followed by Stortamus, come out from the ground to attack Nestor. It looks like Its_A_Random is at a huge advantage right now, with a more-than-half-dead Nestor and a slightly weakened Nidhogg facing his full-health Pokemon.

Its_A_Random has now replaced Utilitand on the field with Sleast, and the round starts off with Nestor moving, surprisingly! It expends plenty of effort and energy sitting there and bracing for any direct attacks he has to take, while his partner (finally) successfully launches snow against his opponent--wait, it missed Sleast... but Stortamus appears to be covered in ice, and is not moving! But Sleast thinks Stortamus is going to summon an earthquake, so Sleast tries to match Stortamus, only to realize he's hurting his teammate as well as Nestor! Nidhogg then sits down on the ground, pulls his wings in to his body, and restores his health back up to 100%. Stortamus and Sleast throw rocks at Nestor and Nidhogg together, and once again Nestor simply flinches. The damage from the sand blowing harshly around the arena finally causes Nestor to fall to the ground, unconsciously, despite bracing himself for anything. Nidhogg stalls for the rest of the round now that Nestor is down, dodging the icy attacks sent his way by Its_A_Random's Ground mons. It seems the gym leader is still at an advantage, but will that change?

Nidhogg blasts snow and ice at high speeds at Stortamus and Sleast, now totally worry-free since there is no Fidgit to think about. Typhon takes a small bite out of the berry he's holding and then releases a burst of energy at Sleast, and it looks like it really hurt! Sleast and Stortamus once again assault Athenodoros' Pokemon in unison with rocks, but this time they don't have the chance to make anything flinch. Nidhogg and Typhon uncreatively keep up their assault, and Sleast seems to really be taking a beating. Stortamus, with his fangs suddenly coated in ice, moves up and bites Nidhogg right in the foot! As Nidhogg hops around on one foot in pain, Sleast shoots ice from his mouth at Nidhogg's face! Nidhogg can no longer withstand the powerful attacks he has been taking, and falls down, knocked out. Typhon once again uses his berry to give him the power to hurt Sleast as much as possible, and while most of Sleast's body is pushed back, he holds to the same spot on the ground, stretched out and seemingly preparing for something. Stortamus rolls around in the mud gloriously, taking a nice big break from this strenuous battle. Sleast's body suddenly bounces forward and headbutts Typhon with a ton of power, even more than the berry attacks! The round is now over, and it seems the challenger is at a big disadvantage right now. Can Athenodoros use the next round to come back because he'll be ordering second? Let's find out!

I don't believe that Earth Power is actually a seismic move: it lacks the longitudinal pressure wave.

Swampert: Wide Guard ~ Toxic (Sleast) ~ Wide Guard
Lapras: Natural Gift (Sleast) ~ Dive (Utilitand) ~ Ice Beam (Utilitand)

And sorry this took so long. Busy as all hell at the moment because of exams and going away soon. But they're done soon.

My ruling is that Earth Power would hit a Diving mon in the mud at normal power because it's pretty much the same thing as Dig.

Athenodoros no longer has any Pokemon in reserve, let's see if he can start some sort of comeback. Sleast tightens his muscles and does his best to prepare for any attacks. Poseidon immediately stretches himself out, just before Utilitand repeatedly picks up and throws rocks at Poseidon and Typhon. Typhon takes another bite of his half-eaten berry and then lashes out at Sleast, who holds on for dear life. Utiltand uses his hands to pantomime a wall, which blocks Poseidon's attempt to launch sludge at Sleast. Typhon moves over to the mud in the center of the arena, so Sleast uses his earthly powers to rip open the ground and hit Typhon, who pops up and though tries to hit Utilitand, is drawn to Sleast, who takes the hit like a pro. Poseidon once again streches out in front of Typhon to block rocks, this time from both Utilitand and Sleast. Typhon takes this free action to shoot ice out of his mouth at Utilitand, and it looks like the round is over! Let's look at the statistics.

tl;dr: lol IAR fell for the Wide Guard thing after doing it to Atheno round 1

Really sorry about this. Don't have time atm (plane to catch), but I'll get to it ASAP when I can. I haven't forgotten.

Alright, actions, finally:

Typhon: Ice Shard (Sleast) * 3
IF Sleast uses Protect successfully, use Ice Beam (Utilitand)
IF Sleast faints, use Ice BEam (Utilitand) from then on

Poseidon: Earth Power (Utlitant) * 3
IF Utilitand uses Wide Guard, use Earth Power
IF Typhon has fainted, use Earthquake
IF Utilitand uses Double Team, use Surf

Go on, save it somehow.

No switching shenanigans, finally. However, I sense there will still be some trickery this round... Here we go! Utilitand shoots a beam of light at Sleast, who suddenly seems rejuvenated! Typhon tries to move quickly to slap Sleast with some ice, but is just not quick enough; that slug is still going! Poseidon does a little dance, so the ground broke open below Utiltand and energy shot up at him. Sleast, the invincible sea slug, copies Poseidon's attack, but uses it against Typhon for some solid damage. Utilitand walks up to Poseidon, takes a white glove off from one of his many hands, and slaps Poseidon across the face with the glove. Poseidon is pissed now, and won't be doing anything but attacking any time soon! Typhon once again attempts to strike Sleast before anything could happen, yet still moves after Utilitand and fails to finish Sleast off. Poseidon and Sleast also repeat their moves from last time, and nothing interesting happens yet... oh, wait! Typhon does not seem able to move! It seems Its_A_Random continues to one-up Athenodoros. Utilitand now copies what Sleast and Poseidon have been doing, splitting open the ground Poseidon was sitting on, aaaaaaand Poseidon counters with the same friggin' move. Sleast finally changes things up a bit by throwing a big wad of mud at Poseidon. Its_A_Random's active Pokemon seem to be reaching the edge of their capabilities for this battle, but he still has mons in reserve, while Athenodoros is stuck with just a Swampert! Stay tuned for more!

"This battle is...OVER! Firmoise @ Expert Belt, replace Sleast & finish this."

Initiating Switch Phase
Sleast OUT
Firmoise IN
Athenodoros has no reserve

Utilitand: After You (Firmoise) > Chill > Chill
IF Posedion is untargetable through Evasive Damaging moves when you act, THEN use Chill that action, AND push actions back.

Firmoise: Wood Hammer + Wood Hammer combo (Posedion) > N/A > Chill
IF Posedion is untargetable through Evasive Damaging moves when you act, THEN use Curse that action, AND push actions back.

EDIT: Also...
23:51:35: <Deck_Knight> Yeah, that'd be a chance substitution, or a KO substitution. Though "untargetable" usually means KO'd.

Athenodoros

Official Smogon Know-It-All
I'm confused about what untargettable means. Does it mean Protect and friends or Dig and friends?

Athenodoros

Official Smogon Know-It-All
Right, that's a bit clearer. Regardless, there's only really one path open now:

Swampert: Protect ~ Hydro Cannon (Utilitand) ~ Chill

Also, could I not just have KO'd Sleast? Must you deny me that?
