Overview
########
  • Checks dangerous Water-type and Ground-type Pokémon such as Suicune, Slowbro, Swampert and Krookodile
  • High Special Attack
  • Good defenses
  • While not the fastest, base 86 Speed is enough to get the jump on Pokémon such as Suicune
  • Capable of keeping up offensive momentum well with Volt Switch
  • Can spread status with Thunder Wave or Will-O-Wisp
  • Access to Trick lets it cripple a special wall by giving it a Choice item on the predicted switch-in
  • Only Grass STAB cuts Special Attack harshly, limiting how long it can stick around for
  • No reliable recovery
  • Fire-types tend to be effective checks for Rotom-C
  • Struggles to do much against Grass-type foes
  • Faces competition from Rotom-H
Choice Specs
########
name: Choice Specs
move 1: Volt Switch
move 2: Leaf Storm
move 3: Thunderbolt
move 4: Trick
item: Choice Specs
ability: Levitate
evs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
nature: Timid

Moves
========
  • Volt Switch is your go-to for momentum-grabbing, and with Choice Specs equipped, it's going to pack an extra punch
  • Leaf Storm is an already mighty attack, and not much can stand up to the sheer power it sports after a boost from Choice Specs
  • Thunderbolt's a viable option if you wish to have a harder-hitting Electric STAB and don't want to switch out, though it is by no means mandatory and thus can be eschewed in favour of a utility option such as Pain Split or Will-O-Wisp
  • Hidden Power provides useful coverage for Rotom-C to nail specific threats with
  • Trick can cripple special walls that attempt to come in and take Rotom-C's attacks - The likes of Umbreon and Snorlax (for example) will lose a lot of utility with Choice Specs forced upon them
Set Details
========
  • Choice Specs provide Rotom-C with the power boost that turns it into such a hard-hitting offensive pivot that is capable of OHKO'ing lots of UU's frailer threats
  • Full investment in Special Attack and Speed let Rotom-C hit as hard and as fast as possible
  • 4 EVs in Special Defense give Porygon2 and Porygon-Z a Download boost to Attack
  • A Timid nature is optimal for this set, since Rotom-C hasn't any boosts to its Speed and thus needs to be as fast as possible
Usage Tips
========
  • While this set seems similar to the Choice Scarf one, it is more focused on wallbreaking than revenge killing
  • Trick away your Choice Specs if you predict the coming of a special wall
  • Leaf Storm is the primary choice of attack on account of its spectucular power, even when resisted. The drop in Special Attack isn't the biggest of concerns given the hit 'n' run nature of this set
  • Take advantage of Rotom-C's resistances (and an immunity) to common attacking types when searching for an opportunity to switch the lawn mower in
Team Options
========
  • Choice Specs variants of Rotom-C fit in well on offensively-inclined teams
  • Since it is effective at removing certain troublesome defensive threats like Suicune and Gligar, Pokémon like Darmanitan and Heracross, who despise the aforementioned defensive Pokémon work well alongside Rotom-C
  • In particular, these two can both threaten the Grass-types that can sponge Rotom-C's STAB attacks
  • Removal of Stealth Rock enables Rotom-C to go about using Volt Switch without having to worry about being slowly worn down, so Rapid Spin/Defog support is always appreciated
Choice Scarf
########
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Volt Switch
move 2: Leaf Storm
move 3: Thunderbolt
move 4: Trick
item: Choice Scarf
ability: Levitate
evs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
nature: Timid / Modest

Moves
========
  • Volt Switch is a necessity for letting Rotom-C proceed to switch to a Pokémon who matches up favourably against the one your opponent has out, keeping momentum
  • Leaf Storm is a powerful STAB attack that dents many Pokémon that don't resist it, and makes short work of Ground-types who try to come in on your predicted Volt Switch
  • Thunderbolt is a STAB that can be used if you wish to stay in and hit harder than Volt Switch but can be foregone in order to run a utility option such as Pain Split or Will-O-Wisp
  • Trick lets Rotom-C burden a specially defensive wall with a Choice Scarf upon their switch-in
Set Details
========
  • With a Choice Scarf equipped, Rotom-C becomes a potent revenge killer
  • Full investment in Special Attack and Speed let Rotom-C hit as hard and as fast as possible
  • The 4 EVs in Special Defense mean that Porygon2 and Porygon-Z end up with a Download boost to their Attack stat
  • A Timid nature lets Rotom-C have the best chance of getting in an attack first
  • Alternatively, it can use a Modest nature to crank up its damage output
Usage Tips
========
  • Since it takes on the role of a revenge killer with this set, Rotom-C should initally be brought into play after one of its teammates has been taken out
  • Volt Switch will be the move you will be using the most, in order to continually grab that vital offensive momentum and revenge kill/wear down the opponent
  • Use Trick when you predict a switch to the likes of Porygon2, Snorlax, and other specially defensive Pokémon
  • If you predict a switch-in to a Ground-type to eat up a Volt Switch, use Leaf Storm
Team Options
========
  • Since Stealth Rock wears Rotom-C down as it repeatedly switches in, Rapid Spin or Defog support is useful.
  • Blastoise in particular makes for a good partner, as it can spin away Stealth Rock and check Fire-types like Darmanitan who try to ruin Rotom-C's fun
  • Since this set is centered around the gain of momentum with Volt Switch, it can be played in a VoltTurn team to great success
  • Rotom-C appreciates teammates who can threaten the Grass-types that present problems to it
Defensive
########
name: Defensive
move 1: Leaf Storm
move 2: Volt Switch
move 3: Pain Split
move 4: Will-O-Wisp / Thunder Wave
item: Leftovers
ability: Levitate
evs: 252 HP / 252 SpD / 4 Spe
nature: Calm

Moves
========
  • Leaf Storm is a solid STAB that will do some decent damage, even uninvested
  • Volt Switch can let Rotom-C switch out to an appropriate teammate whilst doing a bit of damage
  • Pain Split works well in conjunction with Rotom-C's poor HP and is its best means of recovery
  • Will-O-Wisp cripples physical attackers plus inflicts
  • Thunder Wave significantly slows fast threats
Set Details
========
  • Maxed-out HP and Special Defense EVs plus a Calm nature ensure that Rotom-C can take special hits the absolute best it can
  • Leftovers provides all-important passive healing
Usage Tips
========
  • Thanks to its typing, Rotom-C can make for a solid switch-in to opponents such as Mega Blastoise
  • Volt Switch should be used for seizing offensive momentum; Rotom-C can proceed to switch out to a teammate who appreciates said momentum
  • Rotom-C should aim to spread status around the team of the opponent as you see fit
  • Pain Split is best used when Rotom-C's health is dwindling and that of its opponent is at least relatively high
  • Leaf Storm should be used when Rotom-C needs to do some more significant damage. Be wary that due to Leaf Storm's detrimental side-effect, you will probably want to switch or Volt Switch out after using it
  • Rotom-C sports resistances (and an immunity) to several common attacking types, so bring it into play on a predicted use of a move such as Thunderbolt or Hydro Pump
Team Options
========
  • Like the Choice Scarf set, the Defensive set values Defog/Rapid Spin support to stop Rotom-C from being plagued by residual damage on the switch-in
  • Offensively-inclined Pokémon who benefit from the offensive momentum gained and struggle against the bulky Water-types that Rotom-C can deal with make for good teammates
  • Darmanitan is such a Pokémon, and not only is it also able to use U-turn to provide the team with its own momentum, but it can dispatch of the Grass-types like Roserade that Rotom-C struggles with
Other Options
########
  • Hidden Power Fire or Hidden Power Ice can be used on the Specs and Scarf sets in order to nail opponents that wall Rotom-C's dual STAB
  • An offensively-inclined set without a Choice item that gives Rotom-C the freedom to attack, spread status and heal is an alternative option
  • Rotom-C can run a SubSplit set, but because of Leaf Storm's side effect, it won't be effective for sticking around
  • Going the RestTalk route is a possibility for shrugging off status and trying to make Rotom-C last
  • Charge Beam could be used for picking off weakened foes and in the process bolstering offensive presence
  • Shadow Ball is a coverage option that can be used against Pokémon such as Celebi and Metagross
  • A physically defensive set could take advantage of Rotom-C's resistances and an immunity to some common physical attacks such as Earthquake
Checks and Counters
########

**Grass-types**: Rotom-C is forced to rely on the weak Hidden Power for coverage against Grass-types, who wall its STAB combination. Roserade is a great answer to Rotom-C; not only can it take whatever Rotom-C throws at it, but it can hit with a supereffective STAB Sludge Bomb

**Fire-types**: Fire types such as Arcanine and Entei can survive Rotom-C's attacks and will be able to KO it swiftly

**Snorlax**: Snorlax's vast special bulk means that it doesn't fear Rotom-C's assaults, and it can smack Rotom-C hard with Return or use Pursuit as Rotom-C Volt Switches

**Rotom-H**: Rotom-H walls Rotom-C cold (Rather ironic given that Rotom-H is an oven) and OHKOs with Overheat

Overview
########
Rotom-C doesn't just mow lawns - it is also great at checking dangerous Water- and Ground-type Pokemon such as Suicune, Swampert, and Krookodile. Rotom-C's high Special Attack means that it can hit hard, and good defenses ensure that it can take a hit. Whether it is keeping up offensive momentum with Volt Switch or spreading status with Thunder Wave or Will-O-Wisp, Rotom-C is bound to get the job done. Additionally, access to Trick means that Rotom-C can cripple a special wall by giving it a Choice item on the predicted switch, and even though it is not very fast, base 86 Speed is still enough to get the jump on opponents such as Suicune. However, Rotom-C certainly has its problems - its only Grass-type STAB move halves its Special Attack, limiting how long it can stick around for, and it lacks reliable recovery. There are some things that Rotom-C just can't mow down; most Fire-types are very effective checks to Rotom-C, and it struggles to do much against Grass-type foes. Finally, it faces serious competition from its oven-based brethren, Rotom-H. When opting to use Rotom-C, one should ensure that you draw out its maximum potential by taking full advantage of the unique traits it has to offer.

Choice Specs

move 2: Leaf Storm
move 3: Thunderbolt
move 4: Trick
item: Choice Specs
ability: Levitate
evs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

Moves
========
Volt Switch is your go-to for momentum-grabbing, and with Choice Specs equipped, it's going to pack an extra punch. Leaf Storm is an already powerful attack, and not much can stand up to the sheer power it sports after a boost from Choice Specs. Thunderbolt's a viable option if you wish to have a harder-hitting Electric-type STAB move and don't want to switch out, though it is by no means mandatory and can be eschewed in favor of a utility option such as Pain Split or Will-O-Wisp. Trick can cripple special walls that attempt to come in and take Rotom-C's attacks; for example, Pokemon like Umbreon and Snorlax will lose a lot of utility with Choice Specs forced upon them.

Set Details
========
Choice Specs turns Rotom-C into a hard-hitting offensive pivot that is capable of OHKOing lots of UU's frailer threats. Full investment in Special Attack and Speed lets Rotom-C hit as hard and as fast as possible. 4 EVs in Special Defense give Download users a boost to their Attack. A Timid nature is optimal for this set, as Rotom-C needs to be as fast as possible.

Usage Tips
========
This set's focus is wallbreaking, and it should be played as such. Trick away your Choice Specs if you predict a special wall to come in. Leaf Storm is the primary choice of attack on account of its spectucular power, even when resisted. The drop in Special Attack isn't the biggest of concerns, given the hit and run nature of this set. Take advantage of Rotom-C's resistances to common attacking types when searching for an opportunity to switch it in.

Team Options
========
Choice Specs variants of Rotom-C fit well on offensively-inclined teams. As it is effective at removing certain troublesome defensive threats such as Suicune and Gligar, Rotom-C works well with Pokemon like Darmanitan, which despise the aforementioned defensive Pokemon. In particular, the latter can threaten the Grass-types that can sponge Rotom-C's STAB attacks, and it can also use U-turn to provide its own momentum. Removal of Stealth Rock enables Rotom-C to go about using Volt Switch without having to worry about being slowly worn down, so Rapid Spin or Defog support is always appreciated. Examples of teammates capable of providing this are Mega Blastoise, Tentacruel, Starmie, and Crobat. As Rotom-C is walled by Snorlax, physically offensive Fighting-types make for good teammates, as they are great checks to the latter if it hasn't boosted its Defense. Mienshao, Infernape, and Machamp are examples of such Pokemon.

Volt Switch will be the move you will be using most in order to continually grab that vital offensive momentum and either revenge kill or wear down the opponent. Use Trick when you predict a switch to the likes of Porygon2, Snorlax, and other specially defensive Pokemon. If you predict a switch to a Ground-type, use Leaf Storm instead of Volt Switch.

As this set is centered around the gain of momentum with Volt Switch, it can be played in a VoltTurn team to great success. Rotom-C appreciates teammates such as Darmanitan that can threaten problematic Grass-types. Assuming it hasn't boosted its Defense, Snorlax, which walls Rotom-C, is easily handled by physical Fighting-types such as Mienshao, Infernape, and Machamp.

move 4: Will-O-Wisp / Thunder Wave

Pain Split works well in conjunction with Rotom-C's poor HP and is its best means of recovery. In the last slot, Will-O-Wisp cripples physical attackers and also deals residual damage, whereas Thunder Wave significantly slows fast threats.

Set Details

Maximized HP and Special Defense EVs in combination with a Calm nature ensure that Rotom-C can take special hits the absolute best it can. Leftovers provides all-important passive healing.

Team Options

Like the Choice Scarf set, this set values Rapid Spin or Defog support to stop Rotom-C from being plagued by residual damage. Offensively-inclined Pokemon who benefit from the offensive momentum gained and struggle against the bulky Water-types that Rotom-C can deal with make for good teammates. Darmanitan is such a Pokemon, and not only is it also able to use U-turn to provide the team with its own momentum, but it can dispatch of the Grass-types like Roserade that Rotom-C struggles against.

Other Options
########
Hidden Power Fire or Hidden Power Ice can be used on the Choice Specs and Choice Scarf sets in order to nail opponents that resist Rotom-C's STAB moves. An offensively-inclined set without a Choice item that gives Rotom-C the freedom to attack, spread status, and heal is a possibility. Rotom-C can run a SubSplit set, but because of Leaf Storm's side effect, it won't be effective for sticking around. Going the RestTalk route is a possibility for shrugging off status and trying to make Rotom-C last. Charge Beam could be used to pick off weakened foes and bolster offensive presence in the process. Shadow Ball is a coverage option that can be used against Pokemon such as Celebi and Metagross. Finally, a physically defensive set could take advantage of Rotom-C's resistances to some common physical attacks such as Earthquake.

Checks & Counters
########

**Grass-types**: Rotom-C is forced to rely on the weak Hidden Power should it wish to do any sort of damage to Grass-types, which wall its STAB combination. Roserade is a great answer to Rotom-C; not only can it take whatever Rotom-C throws at it, but it can hit back with a super effective STAB Sludge Bomb.

**Fire-types**: Above all, Rotom-H totally walls Rotom-C and OHKOes it with Overheat. Other Fire-types such as Arcanine and Entei can survive Rotom-C's attacks and are able to KO it swiftly. However, those Pokemon can't handle Choice Scarf Rotom-C, which Volt Switches out before they can attack it, and they risk being OHKOed by a Choice Specs-boosted Thunderbolt after Stealth Rock.

**Special Walls**: Rotom-C despises having to face special walls such as Blissey and Snorlax, as they sponge Rotom-C's attacks like there's no tomorrow. Aditionally, Snorlax can smack Rotom-C hard with Return or use Pursuit as Rotom-C Volt Switches out.

**Dragon-types**: Dragon-types resist Rotom-C's dual STAB combination, and UU has no shortage of powerful Dragon-types, including Hydreigon, Goodra and Haxorus, which will all make quick work of Rotom-C.

**Revenge Killers**: Opponents such as Mienshao or Hydreigon outspeed Rotom-C and will be able to revenge kill it. These two Pokemon sometimes carry a Choice Scarf of their own, which allows them to even outspeed Choice Scarf Rotom-C.

Maybe a non choice attacker with eat storm volt switch bolt and HP ice or fire. We should try it out.

Yeah, I was thinking of putting in a set of that nature; perhaps I should be inclined to take it out of the Other Options section and put it as a full-fledged set.

What does the physically defensive spread achieve for Rotom-C? Wouldn't it be better to run a specially defensive spread to better compliment its resistances to mainly Water-, Electric-, and Grass-types, whom are mostly special attackers?

O think it is a little outclassed by amoonguss

I have to disagree here; Rotom-C has its advantages, namely an immunity to Ground moves, the ability to pivot with Volt Switch, Electric STAB attacks, and similar defenses with much greater offensive presence. Of course, Amoonguss has its advantages too. Anyway exactly what does Rotom-C achieve with a physically defensive spread?

No idea. I was just thinking Amoonguss has the same resistances, about as good bulk iirc, regenerator (huge) and spore. Idk it was just a thought. I'll do calcs in a minute

I know, they each have different things to offer to a team. Both are viable choices. Amoonguss has the upper hand when it comes to defensive capabilities, while Rotom-C is more of a pivot for more offensively orientated teams

252 SpA Chandelure Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Rotom-C: 270-318 (88.8 - 104.6%) -- 25% chance to OHKO

252 SpA Chandelure Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Amoonguss: 324-384 (75 - 88.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Black Sludge recovery

Yeah Amoonguss has better bulk, regenerator, and spore. Rotom has levitate, better spa, and will-o-wisp

The defensive EV spread is probably to allow Rotom-C to switch into Ground-, and Water-type Pokemon such as Ryhperior, Krookodile, Flygon, Sharpedo and Swampert. A specially defensive set is outclassed by Celebi and Roserade.

Sapphire.'s pretty much summed up why I chose to put that set in there. Quite a few of the Pokémon Rotom-C is able to switch into are physically-oriented (like the ones Sapphire. mentioned), and I personally feel there are better candidates for a specially defensive set.

yeah, i prefer physically defensive mower as well, but imo specially defensive deserves at least to be in other options, since it has epic special resistances in surf, thunderbolt, leaf storm, etc etc, so mention that.

after that, qc 1/3

In the overview it doesnt even relly check many electric types. Like raikou 2hkos you with hp ice, mega ampharos beats rotom also. Maybe mention ground types instead. You could also probably just merge the specs and scarf sets because theyre the same. Well written man :)

Good point about the Electric-types; I've swapped the mentions out for Ground-types instead. With regards to the Scarf/Specs sets, I suppose that merging them could be a possibility, but there are some major differences in function such as Scarf's use as a revenge killer. :]

imo the order of the sets is completely wrong, I'd do Specs > Scarf > defensive, if you're going to list defensive at all. I see no niche in the UU metagame that Rotom-Cut fills as a defensive pokemon, and you do little to explain it to me. you mention bulky water types, but I see no correlation between this and physically defensive rotom-cut, as all of the relevant bulky waters run special moves

I see absolutely no reason to run hidden power fire or hidden power ice on either the scarf or the specs set. They hit nothing harder than dual stab does except for the irrelevant Ferroseed.

Changed moveset order and relegated HP Fire/Ice to OO.

also, the scarf and specs set should somehow note that it's not mandatory to run thunderbolt - you can just run Trick + a utility move like Pain Split or Will-o-Wisp.

I'm still entirely unconvinced that physically defensive rotom-c even deserves an analysis. Sapphire's explanation of it being able to "switch in on rhyperior, krookodile, swampert, sharpedo, and flygon" really doesn't hold water. Rhyperior is a decent example, as normal Rotom-C can't switch into a Megahorn, but Banded Krookodile easily 2HKOs Rotom-C after rocks, Swampert doesn't use any physical water moves anyway, Sharpedo can still 2HKO with Crunch + Ice Beam, and Band Flygon can 2HKO. None of these threats are big enough to justify running the set to begin with, not to mention the fact that Rotom-C isn't a solid answer to more than one of them.

I'd rather see a SpD set, if any set at all, and no, this isn't outclassed by Roserade or Shaymin - dual stab and a wide support movepool distinguish Rotom-C.

Done.
With regards to a defensively-inclined set, would it be best to just do away with the idea entirely, in your opinion? Or do you feel that specially defensive has enough of a niche to warrant a set? Congratulations on becoming a QC member by the way.

Thanks!

I would go ahead and put in a specially defensive set. It is really nice to have a solid switch-in to stuff like Mega-Blastoise and other bulky special waters.

once you do, QC 2/3. Good luck writing up :)
