Hello and welcome to The Next Best Thing. This project aims to discover sets for Pokemon in the RU metagame that may not be standard now, but actually work well enough to possibly become the new standard. There are plenty of examples of new sets that have become just as standard as old sets or even overtaken them, even in the relatively young USUM RU metagame. As a community, it is our goal in this thread to find new sets for established RU threats that may in time even be considered standard or at least close to it.

Each week I will choose an RU Pokemon. You will have 5 days to come up with and post an original set for that Pokemon, along with an explanation how the set works. In the two days after that, the community will vote on which set is the most creative as well as viable. By "original sets", I mean sets that are not already being given main sets on analyses (for Pokemon that do not have in progress analyses yet you will have to use your judgment on what is considered creative and uncommon enough to be worthy of a set here).

When choosing a set to nominate, you should keep in mind how viable and how unique it is. Despite this project being about uniqueness, please refrain from posting gimmicky sets like Bulk Up Bruxish or Choice Specs Rhyperior. Your set should not simply be a standard set with a slight deviation, such as Life Orb over Poisonium Z on Nasty Plot Salazzle. Single move changes are generally okay as long as the new move does something specific that the normal set cannot do, such as breaking past a certain check or counter.

IMPORTANT RULES:

  • Feel free to be as creative as you want, just make sure that you can prove that your set stands apart from the standard sets, especially if yours does not appear much different from the standard ones. If you do not know which sets are standard, I will add a link to the analyses.
  • Feel free to post replays of your set in action; this will help everyone understand how your set can be game changing in some particular situations.
  • Do not change your set after voting phase has started.
  • You may only post one set per week.
  • During the voting stage, please don't vote for your own set; if you think your own set is the best, just abstain from the vote.

Let's start off this project off with Chesnaught! The former best Spiker in the tier, Chesnaught took a heavy hit in USUM because of the influx of hazard removers able to beat it, like Sigilyph, Rotom-Heat and Florges, and increased competition form offensive Spikers such as Roserade and Mega-Glalie. However, it still has many qualities people usually forget about, like a decent 107 base Attack stat, or a potentially offensive ability in Overgrow. What can you create to show off Chesnaughts less known traits?

best next thing xd

Chesnaught @ Salac Berry
Ability: Overgrow
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
IVs: 30 HP
- Substitute
- Belly Drum
- Seed Bomb
- Drain Punch / Brick Break

pretty fun set, hits like a truck with +6 attack and overgrow boost to seed bomb, plus you've got drain punch for the dual STAB and to heal back up if there's any threatening priority or mons that outspeed you. drain punch does take you back out of overgrow range though so you can run brick break instead if you want.

Chesnaught @ Choice Band
Ability: Overgrow
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Wood Hammer
- Drain Punch
- Stone Edge
- Earthquake

Why setup when you can already kill everything? CB Chesnaught is suprisingly strong, and its movepool allows it to hit most everything in the tier. This set can suprise its usual easy switches Sigilyph, Moltres, and Yanmega with a suprise Stone Edge KO. Additonally, Choice Band Wood Hammer is really strong (it even has a slight chance to 2HKO cress after rocks + lefites!) and can insta kill Milotic. 64 speed also gives it the jump on Bewear, Pangoro, and Machamp. Basically really strong and very likely to catch your opponent off guard.

roman

Banned deucer.

Chesnaught @ Leftovers
Ability: Bulletproof
EVs: 252 HP / 16 Def / 240 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Super Fang
- Taunt
- Toxic
- Drain Punch

stallbreaker ches ,, spe is so you can taunt 196 spe mandi. u basically break like most common mons on stall such as umb regi pyuku and aforementioned mandi. taunt tox is also amazing for breaking down common defensive cores on balance teams. u can use wood hammer > drain punch so u can actually touch hoopa but then regi mu becomes eh., super fang helps pressure the few stall mons tht have a decent mu vs this notably cress and moltres. u can also run synthesis over super fang to improve ur mu vs common milo lix core

Scarf Chesnaught

Chesnaught @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Bulletproof
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stone Edge
- Wood Hammer
- Earthquake
- Drain Punch

This is a full lure Chesnaught, which gives up its supporting moves (i.e. Spikes) to lure some traditional checks (i.e. Sigilyph, Rotom-Heat, Honchkrow, Nidoking, Nidoqueen) and kill them with Stone Edge or Earthquake. Keep in mind that Chesnaught doesn't really have the power to OHKO a threat from full health, so it is better if you use it as a cleaner.
The 2 STABs are mandatory: Wood Hammer is the hard hitting move, whereas Drain Punch recovers some HP while KOing some weakened monster.
Plain and simple: max Atk, plus max Spe with a Jolly nature (thus reaching 249 points without the Choice Scarf) to outspeed as many threats as possible.

congrats to King Wynaut for winning week one!!

Votes:

Stallbreaker: 4 votes
Choice Band: 5 votes

now for this week:

since its arrival, nidoqueen has commanded attention in ru thanks to a huge movepool including great support moves such as stealth rock, taunt and a plethora of coverage. its reasonably good typing, speed, and bulk only helps boost its viability, as these allow it to 1v1 a wide range of threats including pokemon such as registeel, milotic and gligar. your goal for week 2 is to create a nidoqueen set that isn't the standard one. good luck!

awesome gaming

Nidoqueen (F) @ Life Orb / Groundium Z
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 180 HP / 252 Atk / 76 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Hone Claws
- Crunch
- Thunder Punch

If any Cresselias and Milotics thought they could wall Nidoqueen, boy oh boy are they in for a cruel surprise. The 76 Speed allows Nidoqueen to outspeed Cresselia, the Attack is maxed out for the best possible offensive presence, and the rest is dumped into HP to better take Psyshocks, Scalds and other attacks. In addition, the recent Durant ban means this set has way less competition.

Stallbreaker Nidoqueen

Nidoqueen @ Black Sludge
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Taunt
- Earth Power
- Toxic
- Ice Beam

Do you really think that Cresselia, Snorlax, Umbreon, and Porygon2 should stop from switching-in?
With the combination of Taunt and Toxic is possible, because Toxic pressures most of the traditional Nidoqueen's checks/counters putting over them a timer. This status move is also a good "coverage move" because it pressures almost every troublesome switch-ins. On the other hand, Taunt prevents your opponent to get rid of Toxic while blanking the use of Recover (or similar moves) to restore the HP, thus making Toxic way more effective.
Earth Power is the Ground STAB, which is complemented by Ice Beam (thanks for the suggestion!) in order to prevent Gligar from walling you with Roost.

Nidoqueen @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 SpA / 40 SpD / 216 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Earth Power
- Ice Beam
- Sludge Wave
- Toxic

I've always wanted to try out Scarf Nidoqueen, but since it fails to revenge DD Flygon/Feraligatr because of its poor speedtier, I had not gotten around to using it yet. This obviously means you need to fit other ways of revenging Flygon and walling Feraligatr, ie Golisopod, M-Glalie, Milotic and the like. What it does do however, is equip you with a strong scarfer, and a mon that can revenge all non-speed bosting threats, bar Moltres, which you can use rock slide if you feel like this too big of a problem. The 4th slot is very flexible, so there's a lot of different moves you can run here. Toxic Spikes, Toxic, Rock Slide, or even Flamethrower If you're weak to Escav.

As for the spread, it has enough speed to outspeed Scarf Tyrantrum. The rest is dumped into sdef in order to live LO Shaymin's Seed Flare from full, LO Moltres' Fire Blast after SR, Specs Swellow's Boomburst after SR, Scarf Roserade's Leaf Storm (and potentially live LO Rade's Leaf Storm as well, it's a 50-50 roll), and Noivern's Draco Meteor at full. Investing into Sp Def>HP lets it get better calcs vs the aforementioned mons.

Also, nameless90, your set is walled by Gligar, and thus fails to do anything at all vs stall. By changing it to a more offensive Queen with Ice Beam>Sludge Wave this problem would be solved.

Nidoqueen @ Fightinium-Z
EVs: 88 HP/252+ Atk/ 168 speed
Ability: Sheer Force
Power-Up Punch / Ice Punch
Earthquake
Focus Punch
Poison jab

This set aims for a new more unpredictable Nidoqueen. 252 attack EVs and an adamant nature are to make sure you will be hitting physically as hard as possible. 168 speed EVS let you outpace max speed base 55s and up to uninvested base 95s, and the remaining 88 EVs go into HP for some extra bulk. You can use power-up punch over ice punch to boost your attack, or use ice punch to have completely perfect neutral coverage and hits flying, ground, and dragon types for nice damage. Earthquake is a strong stab attack that hits many mons for good damage. Jab is another great stab that hits grass and fairy types for massive damage. And last but not least Focus punch, the main merit of this set! Focus punch hits extremly hard as a z-move and normally, especially at +1 if you choose to run PP punch. Focus punch punishes switch ins harshly and nails common pokemon like Mega Abomasnow, Bewear, Pangoro, Snorlax, Tyrantrum and Umbreon. These calcs show how powerful even a non-boosted fightinium-z focus punch Nidooqueen can really be. However, this set may struggle a bit with waters when unboosted, so if you choose not to run PP punch, make sure you have a decent answer for waters just in case.

Non- boosted:
252+ Atk Nidoqueen All-Out Pummeling (200 BP) vs. 188 HP / 128 Def Snorlax: 450-530 (88.5 - 104.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

252+ Atk Nidoqueen All-Out Pummeling (200 BP) vs. 92 HP / 8 Def Bewear: 450-530 (111.3 - 131.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Leftovers recovery

252+ Atk Nidoqueen All-Out Pummeling (200 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Umbreon: 348-410 (88.3 - 104%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

starting from cycle 3, the deadline to submit a set will be reduced to four days.

Much like the previous Pokemon, more hazard removal in USUM gave Espeon a lot more competition compared to SM. However, no Pokemon is able to fill Espeons niche on a team: its rare access to Magic Bounce gives an amazing ways of combating bounceable moves like Stealth Rock. Despite its somewhat mediocre movepool, it has several interesting and rarely seen moves such as Heal Bell and Stored Power. What sets can this cycles' innovators create?
