Sableye (QC 0/3)

Overview
########
  • In gen 6, Sableye was greatly nerfed with the addition of Fairy types. Despite its new weakness; however, Sableye remains viable in doubles because of its great ability and support movepool.
  • Seeing as its stats are nothing to brag about, Sableye serves one purpose only, and that purpose is abusing Prankster.

  • Sableye is one of 2 Pokemon with access to a priority burning move, the other of which (Mega Banette) takes up your mega slot and requires a turn before it can be used.
  • It also has access to priority taunt, which comes in handy in a meta full of Trick Room, Spore, Rage Powder, and Follow Me users.
Prankster
########
name: Prankster
move 1: Will-O-Wisp
move 2: Taunt
move 3: Recover / Confuse Ray
move 4: Fake Out / Snarl
ability: Prankster
item: Leftovers / Sitrus Berry
evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
nature: Careful

Moves
========
  • Which moves you use on Sableye really depend on what you run it with; it's most commonly used as a lead along with a fast sweeper.
  • If Sableye is used in this way, it would be best to use Confuse Ray over Recover and Fake Out over Snarl, both in order to quickly take care of threats to the other Pokemon you're leading with.
  • Snarl and Recover work well when you run Sableye with a bulkier Pokemon.
  • Will-O-Wisp and Snarl lower the opposing Pokemon's Attack and Special attack respectively, allowing its partner to bulk more hits, while Recover (although admittedly less useful in doubles) allows it to shake off any damage it might have taken from spread moves.
  • Sableye has several other usable moves such as Knock Off, Helping Hand, Sucker Punch, Foul Play, and Icy Wind, however there are better users of all these moves, and I wouldn't recommend using these over more useful moves that utilize Sableye's amazing ability.
Set Details
========
  • The listed EVs and nature are to help it bulk special attacks, due to Sableye's access to a priority burning move, which makes physical attackers less of a threat.

  • Leftovers / Sitrus Berry are to give Sableye passive recovery in order to help make up for its lack of bulk.

Usage Tips
========
  • Sableye is generally the most useful when used as a lead due to its access to priority taunt, which serves as a counter for Trick Room teams and status move users, along with Rage Powder/Follow Me users.
  • It also has access to priority Will-O-Wisp, which can shut down physical sweepers, and has access to Fake Out, which can grant Sableye's partner a free attack on the first turn.
  • It is important that you don't let Sableye get taunted; if you see a Taunt user on your opponent's side of the field, use Taunt on it immediately. If Taunt is used on Sableye, it can't utilize Prankster, and might not even have any moves left to use, forcing you to waste a turn switching.
Team Options
========
  • Sableye runs great with Mega Mawile, seeing as Mega Mawile can KO any Quick Guard user or Fairy Pokemon quickly, and Sableye benefits from intimidate while possessing the ability to quickly burn Defiant Pokemon and Earthquake users.
  • Sableye also runs great with most fast special sweepers such as Latios and Mega Charizard-Y, as Sableye can give its partner time to quickly deal large amounts of damage to the opponent's Pokemon without having to worry about Intimidate or getting burned.
  • If you run a Dragon, Dark, or Fighting type with Sableye, make sure you have a way to deal with fairies, and if you are running Sableye with Mega Charizard Y, I would recommend giving Sableye Morning Sun instead of Recover if you decide to use a recovery move.
Other Options
########

  • Sableye also has access to helping hand, which could be used when paired with a spread move user such as Mega Charizard-Y.
  • It might be a good idea to run Protect on Sableye if your team has strong Surf, Discharge, or Earthquake users.
  • Sableye learns Sucker Punch, but it doesn't exactly make the best revenge killer because of its abysmal Attack stat.
  • Sableye has access to Sunny Day and Rain Dance, which are both given +1 priority because of Prankster. With the absence of Permanent Weather in Gen 6 and the addition of a new Drought user, running Sunny Day or Rain Dance Sableye could be a good idea if you're using a weather team, or if you just really want to ruin a Mega Charizard-Y user's day.
Checks & Counters
########

**Magic Bounce**: Pokemon with Magic Bounce keep Sableye from abusing Prankster; they can even be switched in to bounce back Taunt or Will-O-Wisp, making Sableye almost useless.

**Quick Guard**: Quick Guard makes Sableye almost useless; it prevents Sableye from even taunting the Quick Guard user due to Prankster.

**Lum Berry** Any physical attacker with a Lum Berry can keep from getting burned from Sableye, and then can effortlessly KO it in return with a physical attack.

**Fairies** Due to its low defenses, Sableye can be KOed easily by any moderately strong Fairy Type attack.

Overview:
  • Don't really need the Fairy weakness mention for the overview. It is more trivia than a overview.
  • Really emphasize the great supportive movepool + Prankster in the writeup
Set:
  • Slash Fake Out / Snarl in slot 3 and Recover / Protect in slot 4. Confuse Ray is too unreliable in a competitive setting.
Moves:
  • Take out the first two bullet points. All this section should have is why and when Sableye should use these moves. Also put your bullet points in order of the moves in the set, because that is what your writeup will look like.
  • You forgot Taunt
  • Explain what Fake Out does.
  • Because Fake Out is now slashed with Snarl, explain that Fake Out fits more offensive teams while Snarl fits more bulky, balanced teams.
  • Recover or Protect is simply preference in survivability.
  • In the fourth bullet, you imply that Sableye is only ever hit by spread moves, which is false.
  • The last bullet should be in OO, and you should go into more detail there.
Set Details:
  • Helping Hand and Knock Off are very good options on sableye that barely dont fit in the set, so you could mention them here instead of OO.
  • Protect is better than Recover if your team has EQ users.
Usage Tips:
  • Only pair with offensive partners cause its damage output is butt. Use it earlier because you do not want to try cleaning with it lol.
  • Keep alive until all necessary physical attackers are dead. Don't focus on special attackers and snarl spam until everything that you need to be burned is burned.
Other Options:
  • Take out the discharge and surf mentions. Protect is in the set anyway so the bullet can be removed.
Checks & Counters:
  • use the appropriate tags here
  • No Magic Bounce users are good in Doubles, so take them out.
  • Guts users like Conkeldurr and Fire-type Physical Attackers like Mega Charizard X and Infernape.
  • Sableye can't stop Pokes that can set up a Substitute before getting Taunted.
Do these and I will look again Champ. Gary Oak
