Memento mori
[OVERVIEW]
* Being the only viable Magic Bounce user in the Ubers metagame, Mega Sableye features great role compression with both hazard control and utility.
* Mega Sableye's solid 50 / 125 / 115 bulk, 3 immunities, and only one weakness in Fairy make it a good defensive Pokemon.
* Mega Sableye can take on Psychic spam due to its immunity to it and thus stops Deoxys-A and Mewtwo with investment in Special Defense, but not Tapu Lele.
* Mega Sableye has a solid movepool in Will-O-Wisp, Fake Out, Protect, Toxic, and Knock Off that cannot get shut down by Taunt.
* It effectively shuts down most entry hazard setters like Deoxys-S without Skill Swap and other defensive Spikers and Stealth Rock setters like Ferrothorn and Skarmory.
* Mega Sableye is a staple on stall teams and is for balance teams due to the defensive synergy Mega Sableye provides with Ho-Oh, Lugia, Ferrothorn and defensive Arceus formes.
* However, Mega Sableye's weakness to Fairy hurts it a lot considering how common Xerneas is in the tier.
* Burn damage wears opponents down slowly, and RestTalk is much more common with Pokemon such as Xerneas and Zygarde.
* Mega Sableye is overpowered by a lot of offensively strong Pokemon due to the hard-hitting nature of Ubers or simply setup bait; Primal Groudon can do both even on a defensive set.
* Lastly, Mega Sableye is fairly one-dimensional in its viable sets.

nature: Impish
evs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========
* Fake Out grants Mega Sableye a safe Mega Evolution and small chip damage, enabling entry hazard and status control on turn one. This can potentially break a Focus Sash on Deoxys-A and Deoxys-S as well.
* Foul Play deals damage to foes with a high Attack stat and those who cannot be burned.
* Will-O-Wisp burns foes, halving their Attack and wearing them down.
* Recover is Mega Sableye's option for reliable recovery, keeping it healthy through hazard damage, chip damage, and big hits.
* Protect also grants Mega Sableye a safe Mega Evolution, giving it the ability to scout the opponent and stall turns. In addition, this allows for a safe Mega Evolution on Ghost-types such as Lunala and Giratina.
* Toxic can be chosen over Will-O-Wisp and is considered a viable alternative, dealing more damage over time and hitting the likes of Primal Groudon.
Set Details
========
* Full investment in HP and Defense with an Impish nature makes up for Mega Sableye's below-average health stat while maximizing its physical bulk. This allows Sableye to reliably check threatening physical attackers like Extreme Killer Arceus, Deoxys-A, Mega Kangaskhan, and Solgaleo.
* Prankster is its only useful pre-Mega ability, though Sableye doesn't gain priority on the initial turn it Mega Evolves.
* Sablenite is needed for Sableye's Mega Evolution, greatly boosting its defensive capabilities and utility.
Usage Tips
========
* Sableye should Mega Evolve early on to block any form of entry hazards and pressure the opponent into not setting up any.
* When using Fake Out, keep in mind that Sableye has no safe Mega Evolution should the opponent have and lead with a Ghost type.
* Sableye can reliably check every hazard setter in the Ubers metagame except for Primal Groudon, Dialga, and Skill Swap Deoxys-S. Switching in on any other Pokemon than these is usually safe to prevent hazards.
* Keeping Sableye healthy at all times should be a priority and thus use Recover frequently.
* Preventing and bouncing back hazards and status is Mega Sableye's main niche and can only be guaranteed under the above circumstances.
* Do not stay in the face of powerful wallbreakers that don't care about Will-O-Wisp or Foul Play. These include Fire types like Groudon and Ho-Oh and Dragon types like Refresh + Facade Mega Salamence, Mixed and Choice Band Rayquaza, and Z-Heal Block Palkia.
* Similarly, this set is not intended to work well versus specially offensive threats outside of Mega Sableye's immunities, like Xerneas, which can set up for free.
* Be careful when dealing with potential mixed offensive threats like Rayquaza, Groudon, and Genesect. Scout their moveset through Protect or switches and avoid losing 50% HP.
Team Options
========
* Mega Sableye is great for entry hazard and status control for balanced and defensive teams. These teams try to whittle down the opponent or wait for an opportunity to sweep. They usually switch a lot due to the defensive synergie they are built upon, so hazards hurt them much more compared to hyper offense. In addition Mega Sableye prevents Taunt, which would usually shut down stall completely, and it is immune to Psychic-type attacks from Tapu Lele, Deoxys-A, and Mewtwo which could otherwise break a defensive team.
* Solgaleo, Magearna, and Toxapex all cover Mega Sableye's weakness versus Fairy-types and special attackers. Magearna can use Heart Swap and Pain Split to turn the tables on setup sweepers, while Toxapex can use Haze against stat changes and pressure the opponent with Toxic Spikes while Regenerator and Recover keep it healthy. Solgaleo has access to Morning Sun, Toxic, and Sunsteel Strike, which heavily dents Fairy-types.
* Ho-Oh loves to not deal with Stealth Rock, which would otherwise chunk half of its HP, and it takes on special attackers, Fire-, and Fairy-types alike which trouble Mega Sableye such as the common Xerneas.
* Flying-types in general profit from not getting chunked by Stealth Rock and being free to switch around.
* Lugia and Lunala, due to their Multiscale and Shadow Shield abilities, respecitvely, appreciate coming in at full health and not getting poisoned and burned, while they deal with the likes of Primal Groudon and offensive threats.
* Defog or Rapid Spin support grants almost total hazard control if used with Mega Sableye. Giratina-Origin and Arceus-Water both have access to Defog and can take on the likes of Primal Groudon and other physical attackers as well.
* Zygarde-C checks Primal Groudon and takes on almost every physical attacker in the tier for Mega Sableye.
[Strategy Comments]
Other Options
============
* A specially defensive set with 252 Special Defense EVs, a Calm Nature, and Toxic over Will-O-Wisp allows Sableye to take on offensive Psychic-types in Deoxys-A, Choice Scarf Lunala, and Mewtwo, while still being able to soft-check Extreme Killer Arceus for balance and stall teams.
* Knock Off does chip damage and removes the foe's item, but Foul Play is usually superior because it does more damage and lets Mega Sableye it deal with physical setup sweepers. In addition, neither Mega Stones, Red and Blue Orb, or Z-Crystals can be Knocked Off.
Checks and Counters
==================
**Fairy-types**: Fairy-types destroy Mega Sableye by virtue of their typing. Xerneas and Arceus Fairy can OHKO or set up against Mega Sableye for free. Magearna is a common check to Dark-types and special setup sweepers and can just OHKO Mega Sableye with Fleur Cannon. Unaware Clefable is a viable choice versus setup sweepers in Ubers, that can remove burn and Toxic with Heal Bell and outspeed and 2HKO Mega Sableye. Mega Sableye has to be careful around Tapu Lele, since it has a good shot at OHKOing with Moonblast. Tapu Koko, while uncommon, can at least 2HKO Sableye as well.
**Primal Groudon**: Groudon chunks Mega Sableye with Precipice Blades or sun-boosted Lava Plumes, with a 30% burn chance, overpowering it and setting up Stealth Rock in the process. Offensive sets are even harder to deal with. Primal Groudon can run a mixed or special set and catch Mega Sableye by surprise.
**Ho-Oh**: Ho-Oh can easily break through Mega Sableye with its combination of strong attacks in Brave Bird and Sacred Fire, a 50% chance to burn, and the ability to outstall it through Regenerator, Recover, and even Substitute.
**Dark-types**: Specially offensive Dark-types give Mega Sableye a hard time, resisting both of its STAB moves while usually not caring about chip damage or burn. Darkrai can use Nasty Plot and dent it heavily with Dark Pulse, while Yveltal can do the same without any setup on an offensive set.
**Calm Mind Arceus formes**: Calm Mind Arceus formes such as Arceus-Dark and Arceus-Fairy pose quite the problem for Mega Sableye, as they are free to set up on or simply deal a lot of damage to it. Neither Foul Play nor burn can stop them; Sableye simply has no counterplay against Arceus-Dark and Arceus-Fairy.
**Zygarde-C**: Zygarde-C walls Mega Sableye and can just use Thousand Arrows, shuffle its team around with Dragon Tail, set up with Coil or Dragon Dance, and get rid of potential burns through the common RestTalk.
**Mega Salamence and Rayquaza**: Mega Salamence's Aerilate lets it break through Mega Sableye while not caring about burns or Foul Play due to Refresh and Facade. Rayquaza 2HKOes Mega Sableye with its STAB moves, and a mixed set does not care about burns either.
**Special Attackers**: Special attackers can just break past Mega Sableye due to their incredible power and being unthreatened by Mega Sableye. Dialga can just overpower it with its excellent STAB coverage in Flash Cannon and Draco Meteor to set up its own Stealth Rock. Primal Kyogre can OHKO Mega Sableye with Origin Pulse or 2HKO it with Scald, Rest makes status and chip obsolete, and Calm Mind gets gives it a free setup opportunity. Z-Heal Block Palkia can just set up on and OHKO Mega Sableye with +2 Spacial Rend or Hydro Pump.
**Dedicated Anti-Leads**: Excadrill can effectively circumvent Mega Sableye due to Mold Breaker, thus setting up Stealth Rock and spreading Toxic. Deoxys-S with Skill Swap can just gain Magic Bounce and proceed to set up hazards of its own.
