[Overview]

Despite possessing lower stats and a shallower movepool than other metagame staples, Sableye remains a very viable choice in the UU tier after the transition to BW2. Prankster, Sableye's Dream World ability, is the key to its success, giving it access to priority on key moves, such as Will-O-Wisp, Recover, and Taunt. Combined with zero weaknesses and two handy immunities, Sableye can be a thorn in the side of physical attackers, set-up sweepers, and support Pokemon alike. In addition, recent changes are almost exclusively beneficial for the Darkness Pokemon. Sableye is able to take on UU newcomers Mienshao and Scrafty easily, and the increasingly popular Moxie Heracross is not nearly as threatening to Sableye as its Guts counterpart. Sableye also gained interesting moves such as Gravity in BW2, increasing its already vast support options. However, Sableye struggles to handle special attackers and the most powerful physical threats, so using Sableye effectively requires a strong defensive backbone to overcome some of its shortcomings. Still, with team support and some prediction, Sableye makes a great addition to teams looking for insurance against physical attackers and stall teams.

[SET]
name: Prankster
move 1: Recover
move 2: Will-O-Wisp
move 3: Taunt
move 4: Foul Play / Night Shade
item: Leftovers
ability: Prankster
nature: Calm
evs: 252 HP / 120 Def / 136 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

This set abuses all of Sableye's unique gifts in conjuction with Prankster to become a massive headache for teams lacking the power to force it out. Recover helps Sableye to continually take hits, and due to Prankster it will move first almost all of the time, meaning the opponent must be doing more than fifty percent damage to Sableye to have a chance at beating it with power alone. Priority Will-O-Wisp cripples physical attackers, and chips away at the opponent's health. Taunt helps Sableye in a variety of ways, preventing status, opposing Taunt, stat boosting moves, and recovery moves. Foul Play or Night Shade occupies the last slot, in case Sableye is Taunted or needs to deal damage more quickly than Will-O-Wisp can provide. Foul Play gives Sableye a weapon against Victini, Darmanitan, and Chandelure looking to switch in on any of Sableye's other moves, while Night Shade is a more consistent option.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The EVs provide Sableye with balanced defensive capabilties, with an emphasis on Sableye's Special Defense because of Sableye's access to priority burns to bolster its Defense. The Defense EVs allow Sableye to take on the UU newcomers Scrafty and Mienshao without trouble through a cycle of Will-O-Wisp and Recover, using Taunt if necessary to stop set-up. A Calm nature is ideal because neither of Sableye's main attacking options utilize Sableye's own Attack stat, and the benefit of minimizing possible confusion damage is preferred. With such a large support movepool, Sableye can use multiple other moves in the last slot. Knock Off allows Sableye to operate while Taunted, and disrupts item dependent Pokemon, for example ridding defensive Pokemon such as Umbreon of Leftovers or sweepers such as Azelf of Life Orb. Toxic in the last slot helps Sableye wear down special attackers such as Blastoise and Slowbro more effectively than if they had been burned. Substitute works well for stalling because between priority Substitutes and Recovers, the opponent will struggle to get good hits on Sableye. However, many of these alternate options leave Sableye relying on status damage to drain the opponent's health.

To help Sableye bring down opponents more quickly than with burn damage alone, entry hazards aid it immensely. Many of Sableye's counters are also very vulnerable to entry hazards, such as Zapdos, Chandelure, and Houndoom. Qwilfish and Gligar can supply Spikes and Stealth Rock, respectively, while also serving as backup checks to physical attackers that Sableye cannot handle. In return, Sableye can block Rapid Spin by way of its Ghost-typing to keep the entry hazards on the field. While Sableye is adept at taking on the majority of physical attackers in UU, strong special attackers are another story. Snorlax can handle special juggernauts such as Zapdos, Shaymin, and Nidoking, and also appreciates the Fighting-type immunity that Sableye brings to the table.

[Other Options]

Prankster is central to Sableye's success, and with a large support movepool Sableye can use many other moves reliably. Sableye can make use of the Substitute and Torment combination, which will make many attackers rip their hair out trying to land a meaningful hit on Sableye. However, Sableye will struggle to take down opponents quickly with just Night Shade or Will-O-Wisp damage. Sableye is a decent Calm Mind user with Dark Pulse, now compatible with Prankster through move tutors, to surprise the special attackers that like to try to bring Sableye down; however, not being able to run both Taunt and Will-O-Wisp together on one set makes consistent results from the Calm Mind set unlikely. Sableye is able to use other moves such as Confuse Ray, Captivate, Trick, Psych Up, and Mean Look somewhat effectively, but is usually better off with the moves listed in the analysis. Finally, Sableye can be a valuable addition to a team based on a specific field condition with access to Sunny Day, Rain Dance, and Gravity. Prankster almost guarantees that Sableye can use the respective move to aid benefiting sweepers.

[Checks and Counters]

While Sableye may seem like a tough nut to crack with priority burn and recovery, there are multiple reliable methods to take it down. Fire-types such as Victini, Darmanitan, and Chandelure can come in on any attack except for Foul Play and take out Sableye in a single blow. Other lesser seen Fire-types such as Houndoom and Rotom-H can switch in with impunity because they do not fear Foul Play. While Guts Heracross has a high Attack stat, it can also switch in without fear because of its resistance to Foul Play. Heracross can then annihilate Sableye with Megahorn, profiting from potential burns due to its ability. Xatu is a good counter to Sableye because of Magic Bounce, which will reflect Sableye's attempts to status or Taunt Xatu. Xatu can then easily set up Reflect to sponge Foul Play. From there, it is a bit of a stalemate unless Xatu runs Toxic, which will bring down Sableye over time.

In addition to these options, most strong special attackers can take care of Sableye without much trouble. As Sableye cannot buffer their special attacks, Pokemon such as Roserade and Raikou can handle Sableye without issue and do not mind being burned. Another of Sableye's shortcomings is that it does not take on bulky Water-types very well without Toxic because of Scald's burn chance, so Suicune, Blastoise, and Milotic can all work against Sableye if needed.

Changes:
- Brought in changes to UU since last analysis (does pretty well vs Scrafty, Mienshao, and the now popular Moxie Cross means what was once Sableye's best counter is now taken advantage of)
- The Trick set is out. You make whatever switches in slow, but so what? You haven't done anything really productive. Even if they're slower now, if they're switching in they likely beat Sableye, so you still need to switch. Might as well have burned, Taunted, or just attacked the switch in anyway. The Trick set doesn't help vs stall because they don't mind being slow and Sableye is great vs stall anyway. Physical Choice users like Victini or Darmanitan that switch in might as well have hit with Foul Play. I guess for Special attackers it works but why have the option to slightly annoy them when you can use that slot to burn stuff or not be total Taunt bait? Also you could just Knock Off if item control is really what you're going for

http://www.smogon.com/bw/pokemon/sableye

[OVERVIEW]

- Almost exclusively benefits from BW2 changes (Scrafty, Mienshao, Moxie Cross)
- Prankster is the key to Sableye's success
- Nightmare for physical attackers and many stall teams
- No type-effective weaknesses
- Able to stop many threats effectively, but due to only having 4 moves available will always have exploitable weaknesses no matter the set
- With good prediction and some minor team support makes a great addition to a team

[SET]
name: Prankster
move 1: Recover
move 2: Will-O-Wisp
move 3: Taunt
move 4: Foul Play / Night Shade
item: Leftovers
ability: Prankster
nature: Calm
evs: 252 HP / 120 Def / 136 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

- Abuses Prankster to the fullest
- Able to handle most physical attackers in the tier
- Priority Recover can make Sableye very tough to take down
- Will-O-Wisp neuters all physical attackers that are not Fire-types or possess Guts
- Taunt prevents Sableye from being statused as well as preventing the opponent from setting up
- Foul Play mauls the few physical attackers that beat this, except for Guts Heracross who still takes a chunk, while Night Shade is more reliable damage. Both prevent Sableye from being Taunt-bait

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

- Evs make give Sableye balanced defensive capabilties with an emphasis on Special Defense due to having access to priority burns
- Calm because neither attacking move uses Sableye's attack stat, so you can minimize possible confusion damage
- Knock Off is a decent move in the last slot to hurt item-dependent Pokemon. Limits Sableye to relying almost exclusively on burn to do damage
- Toxic or Substitute could also work, but it makes Sableye vulnerable to Taunt. Toxic helps break down bulkier Pokemon that don't mind the burn, such as Blastoise, and allows Sableye to status Fire-types
- Hazard support helps Sableye a lot because Sableye causes lots of switches. Gligar and Qwilfish have access to hazards and can serve as backup checks to physical attackers. Sableye also can block Rapid Spin
- Snorlax takes on the special attackers in the tier, whom Sableye can't take. Snorlax appreciates having opposing physical attackers burned and something to take Fighting-type attacks.

[Other Options]

- Torment with Substitute. With Toxic Spikes not being very viable you will struggle to make significant dents in the opponent's team.
- Calm Mind to surprise special attackers. Difficult to pull off because Sableye has to choose between Taunt and Will-O-Wisp
- Confuse Ray, Captivate, Trick, Psych Up, Mean Look. Confuse Ray and Psych Up seem somewhat viable, but generally make Sableye more vulnerable to something that it could cover with a standard move
- Weather Support with the respective item. Almost guaranteed to get the weather started due to Prankster
- Gravity in the same vein

[Checks and Counters]

- Fire types like Victini, Darmanitan, Rotom-H, and Houndoom. These are susceptible to being worn down. Plus, the first two need to avoid Foul Play on the switch in
- Guts Heracross is the best counter
- Xatu annoys, can be a stalemate if Xatu lacks Toxic
- Strong special attackers in general give Sableye a lot of trouble. Especially Roserade and Shaymin, who have access to recovery and Natural Cure to avoid significant trouble from being burned

We should probably work on finding a better EV spread for the first set. That one is outdated as fuck--iirc it was meant to beat Donphan (no longer relevant) while keeping the best possible SpD.

Toxic deserves a stronger emphasis that what it currently has, as it lets Sableye beat Blastoise much more easily. Speaking of Blastoise, you say that Sableye has a crappy matchup against most spinners when in reality it has an "ok" matchup at worst, so please change that.

Also remove this bit from the first set:

- Sableye sometimes has trouble switching in, so a slow U-turn, Baton Pass, or Volt Switch can help it a lot. Togekiss, Umbreon, or Xatu can all help Sableye get into play
That's not really true, support Sableye looks to switch in on stuff (specifically Rapid Spin and like... HJK). This would apply more to CM Sableye, who wants to be as healthy as possible before beginning to set up.

Put in those changes kokoloko. Thanks!

Ran some calcs to see if 252 / 120 / 136 Calm would still work. This is what I came up with:

252 Life Orb neutral Mienshao vs 252 / 120 neutral Sableye: 49-58%
- Sableye can take it on even after switching into Stealth Rock (58 + 29 + 12.5 = 99.5, but Leftovers gives you some wiggle room). You can also stall SubSD a bit, but are in trouble if they crit. EDIT: Actually if you switch in on Swords Dance, then burn as they SD again you're still pretty fucked

DD Scrafty (252 Life Orb neutral Scrafty vs 252 / 120 neutral Sableye)
- Crunch: 47-56%
- +1 Burn: 35-42%
- You win again after SR barring Defense drops / crits. Leftovers gives some wiggle room

BU Scrafty (8 Atk Leftovers neutral Scrafty vs 252 / 120 neutral Sableye)
- Crunch: 28-33%
- +1 Crunch: 42-50%
- +2 Crunch: 57-67%
- Accounting for some Shed Skin, you shouldn't let it get above +2

I don't run a lot of calcs, so these might be wrong, but it seems like a solid spread still

Banned deucer.
The Ev Spread on the first set allowed Sableye to avoid te 2HKO from Alakazam (shadow ball). So yeah it's outdated as fuck. I think I have a good spread from a team I made, I will look for it when I come back home.
Also, are you really sure we should keep CM Sableye on the analisys? I have used it multiple times to test how "good" it was and never seemed to work. It can't beat bulky waters due to Scald (which you can't prevent via Taunt and its probably the biggest reason why the set doesn't work). Another problem is that Sableye doesn't hit hard enough unless it has like 4/5 boosts which aren't easy to get without Will-O-Wisp and if you're actually using WoW, then you are easily toxiced/phazed away.

I think CM Sableye deserves its spot in the analysis. A common offensive strategy in UU right now is to overwhelm the opponent's Snorlax / Umbreon then sweep with special attackers. Many teams are stacked with special attackers and after a few boosts Sableye can defend himself well against those types of teams. Something that I found in testing is that if you stay 2 boosts ahead of even very strong special attackers you come out ahead. By CM'ing on the switch and then CM'ing again before they hit you, Sableye can take on LO Shaymin, Zapdos, or even Nidoking. This means CM Sableye beats many would be counters to the first set, and does very well in a specially based metagame. That alone makes it pretty worthy of analysis in my opinion even if it isn't the most popular set. You'd also be surprised how well Sableye can survive against physical onslaughts with 252 / 252 Bold, even without Will-O-Wisp. I was able to stall Mienshao out of Stone Edges easily before starting to set up Calm Minds without Will-O-Wisp even in the set.

Basically it succeeds once the strongest attackers (usually frailer also) are out of the way and you can set up and go for your sweep

I have some logs here, can show more if needed. Played on PO because PS is awful, and their UU is slightly different, but for all intents and purposes this should be ok (it took out a SubCM Virizion!). Sableye bits in BOLD

I seriously doubt that the CM set deserves an analysis, this set has some of the worst 4MSS ever. If you want to use a defensive spinblocker with Calm Mind, you should be using Cofagrigus almost exclusively. The thing that sets Sableye apart from everything else is priority Taunt and priority Will-O-Wisp. If you are not running these moves on Sableye, you should probably be using a different pokemon, and the CM set has to choose between the two.

@AJC- Good idea, added that in

On CM - Not trying to be difficult, I swear I'll remove it if another person says to do so, just wanted to leave this comparison here from the usage stats. Using the 1st set with Foul Play as "Prankster" and CM / Recover / Dark Pulse / Taunt as CM. Not even counting Will-O-Wisp's possibility, which would help CM in some instances.

1. Roserade - Prankster loses, CM can win if Roserade switches into CM or Taunt
2. Flygon - Prankster wins, Scarf Flygon does 55% max to CM so you can stall it out, then continue setting up
3. Chandelure - Both lose, both can do damage on the switch in with the Dark move
4. Bronzong - Both win
5. Heracross - Prankster wins only if Moxie and not SD, CM loses
6. Zapdos - Prankster loses, CM wins if Zapdos switches in on CM
7. Snorlax - Both win
8. Arcanine - Both lose, Prankster does better if you hit it with Foul Play on the switch
9. Kingdra (mew being gone) - Prankster wins vs DD, CM can win against DD if you're facing one without any boosts. Still Prankster can win on the switch in always against DD, and both lose vs Rain Dance, so advantage Prankster
10. Raikou - Both lose, CM has to have a lot of boosts already to stand up to it

Top 10: Prankster wins 5 (assumes all Heracross are Moxie non-SD, and counts all Kingdra as DD), CM wins 5 (assumes all Flygon are scarf)

Now look at the next 10:

Nidoking: Prankster loses, CM wins if it switches in on CM
Blastoise: Both are just annoyed by Scald, CM does better due to SpD boost
Darmanitan: Both lose. Prankster can Foul Play on the switch
Swampert: Prankster wins, CM doesn't take on the Tank awfully well, wastes too many Recovers. Both are annoyed by Scald versions
Togekiss: Prankster loses, CM beats it if it switches in on Calm Mind
Slowbro: See Blastoise, advantage CM
Porygon2: Both win as long as it doesn't have a Download boost, advantage to CM
Suicune: See Blastoise, advantage CM
Shaymin: Prankster loses, CM wins if it switches in on Calm Mind

Top 20: Prankster wins 7, CM wins 8 not counting the advantage vs bulky waters
-Newcomers: Prankster beats both Mienshao and Scrafty (has trouble with SD Mienshao), CM loses to Scrafty but still beats non-boosting Mienshao.

If QC still doesn't think CM is worth it, I'll be happy to remove it. It's outside of Sableye's niche a bit, but against the common special attacking spam teams does much better than Prankster. Also, priority Taunt and Recover give it an edge in some instances over Cofagrigus, and makes up for some of the lost bulk

I don't really get how those logs support the viability of CM Sableye due to 2 reasons:

1. Virizion isn't UU and Cresselia is almost never used in UU so it's not any sign of ''CM Sableye working'' that it beats those 2.
2. The opponents had absolutely no idea of what they were doing. Of course, if somebody starts spamming moves Sableye is immune against because they're noobs, Sableye will sweep but ''beating noobs that make moves dealing 0 damage'' is not a point for adding any set.

I mean, if you're actually trying to prove if CM Sableye is analysis worth via logs, at least show decent logs, not just noobs doing stupid things/sableye beating non UU pokemon.

EDIT: the other problem with CM is what Psych071c said, it has the worst 4 Moveslot Syndrome ever and depending on the last move you beat X or Y pokemon so the list of pokemon beaten by CM Sableye isn't that long. Also, it's not useful saying Sableye wins against Nidoking/Togekiss/etc if Nidoking switches on Sableye doing CM because honestly that isn't a 1vs1 situation (what seems you are trying to say) . And Nidoking isn't switching on CM Sableye.

PS: It's even more disappointing on practice than it looks on paper (and it's already bad on paper)

Ok, I'll remove Calm Mind. Seems to be the general consensus.

I do think you missed what I meant by beats it though. If you come in Snorlax for instance, who is easily beaten by both sets, the opponent thinks its the standard Sableye. If they don't have Darmanitan / Victini / Xatu / Heracross, they'll probably go to a special attacker because they don't know its CM yet. With a CM on the switch, you're in a position to beat nearly every special attacker in the tier. That was what I was trying to show, not say Sableye is able to wall Nidoking / any other special attacker.

Anyway, CM will be in OO. This should be ready for QC checks once I edit

If Sableye was slightly stronger I would approve it, but the fact is it doesn't threaten anything without a ton of boosts, and even assuming your opponent lets you set up that much, chances of getting critted over longer periods of time are high. This leads me to believe it'll be dead weight a lot of the time.

Anyway, now that it's removed,

Despite possessing lower stats and a shallower movepool than other metagame staples, Sableye remains a very viable choice in the UU tier after the transition to Black and White BW2. Prankster, Sableye's Dream World ability, is the key to its success, giving it access to priority on Taunt, Will-O-Wisp, Recover, and the rest of its non-attacking movepool. Combined with zero type weaknesses and two handy immunities, Sableye can be a thorn in the side of physical attackers, set-up sweepers, and support Pokemon alike. Sableye also gained interesting moves such as Gravity in Black and White BW2, increasing its already vast support options. However, Sableye struggles to handle special attackers and the most powerful physical threats, so using Sableye effectively requires a strong defensive backbone to overcome some of Sableye's shortcomings. Still, with team support and some prediction, Sableye makes a great addition to teams looking for insurance against physical attackers and stall teams.

[SET COMMENTS]

This set abuses all of Sableye's unique gifts in conjuction with Prankster to become a massive headache for teams lacking the needed attacking power to force it out. Recover helps Sableye continue weathering hits, and due to Prankster will move first almost all of the time, meaning the opponent must be doing more than fifty percent to Sableye to have a chance at beating it through with power alone. Priority Will-O-Wisp cripples physical attackers, and chips away at the opponent's health. Taunt helps Sableye in a variety of ways, preventing status, Taunt, stat boosting moves, and recovery moves. Should Sableye be Taunted or need to do more damage than Will-O-Wisp can provide, Foul Play or Night Shade occupy the last slot. Foul Play gives Sableye a weapon against Victini, Darmanitan, and Chandelure looking to switch in on any of Sableye's other moves, while Night Shade is a more consistent option.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The EVs provide Sableye with balanced defensive capabilties, with an emphasis on Sableye's Special Defense because of Sableye's access to priority burns. The defensive EVs allow Sableye to take on the UU newcomers Scrafty and Mienshao without trouble; Semicolon through a cycle of Will-O-Wisp and Recover, using Taunt if necessary to stop set-up. A Calm nature is ideal because neither of Sableye's main attacking options utilize Sableye's own Attack stat, and the benefit of minimizing possible confusion damage is preferred. With such a large support movepool, Sableye can use has available multiple other moves in the last slot. Knock Off still allows Sableye to operate while Taunted, while also disruptinges item dependent Pokemon, for example ridding defensive Pokemon of Leftovers or sweepers of Life Orb. Maybe include examples of Pokemon? Toxic in the last slot helps Sableye wear down special attackers like such as Blastoise and Slowbro more effectively than if they had been burned. Substitute works well for stalling because between priority Substitutes and Recovers, the opponent will struggle to get good hits on Sableye. However, many of these alternate options leave Sableye relying on status damage to drain the opponent's health.

To help Sableye bring down opponents more quickly than with burn damage alone, entry hazards aid Sableye immensely. Many of Sableye's counters are also very vulnerable to hazards, such as Zapdos, Chandelure, and Houndoom. Qwilfish and Gligar can supply Spikes and Stealth Rock, respectively, while also serving as backup checks to physical attackers that Sableye cannot handle. In return, Sableye can block Rapid Spin by way of its Ghost-typing to keep the hazards on the field. While Sableye is adept at taking on the majority of physical attackers in UU, strong special attackers are another story. Snorlax can handle special juggernauts like Zapdos, Shaymin, and Nidoking, and also appreciates the Fighting-type immunity that Sableye brings to the table.

[Other Options]

Prankster is central to Sableye's success, and with a large supportive movepool Sableye can use many other moves reliably. Sableye can make use of the Substitute + Torment combination, which will make many attackers rip their hair out trying to land a meaningful hit on Sableye. However, Sableye will struggle to take down opponents quickly with just Night Shade or Will-O-Wisp to do damage. Sableye can put together is a decent Calm Mind set user with Dark Pulse, now compatible with Prankster through move tutors, to surprise the special attackers that like to try to bring Sableye down. However, not being able to run both Taunt and Will-O-Wisp together on one set makes consistent results from the Calm Minder set unlikely. Other moves such as Confuse Ray, Captivate, Trick, Psych Up, and Mean Look could all be used somewhat effectively by Sableye, but usually Sableye is better off with the mix of moves listed in the analysis. Finally, Sableye can be a valuable addition to a team based on a specific field condition with access to Sunny Day, Rain Dance, and Gravity. Prankster almost guarantees that Sableye can use the respective move to aid benefitting benefiting sweepers.

Other lesser seen Fire-types such as Houndoom and Rotom-hH I think its capitalized? can switch in with impunity because they do not fear Foul Play nearly as much. While Guts Heracross has a high attack stat, it can also switch in without fear because of its resistance to Foul Play. Heracross can then annihilate Sableye with Megahorn, profiting off of potential burns due to its ability. Xatu is a good check to Sableye because of Magic Bounce Xatu is a bad matchup for Sableye because of Magic Bounce It sounded like Xatu was in the bad match up, which will reflect Sableye's attempts to status or Taunt Xatu. Xatu can then easily set up Reflect to sponge Foul Play. From there, it is a bit of a stalemate unless Xatu runs Toxic, which will bring down Sableye over time.

In addition to these options, most strong special attackers can take care of Sableye without much trouble. As Sableye cannot cut their Special Attack stat, Pokemon like Roserade and Raikou can handle Sableye without issue and do not especially mind being burned. Another of Sableye's shortcomings is that it does not take on bulky Water-types very well without Toxic because of Scald's burn chance, so Suicune, Blastoise, and Milotic can all work against Sableye also.

I can c/p the edits if you prefer.

Nice job writing this!
