Overview
########
Scraggy returns this generation as a threatening Dragon Dance sweeper or Choice Scarf cleaner. It has good bulk and a good speed tier for Dragon Dance and Choice Scarf, outspeeding 21 speed Scarf wielders after a boost. It gets the newly buffed Knock Off as STAB and puts it to great effect in weakening its own checks and while sweeping. Furthermore, Scraggy's three useful abilities help it set up easier or give Scraggy a devastating snowball effect. However, times are rough for Scraggy this gen. It is weak to the newly introduced Fairy-types, sporting a 4x weakness to their STAB while Scraggy's STAB moves are resisted by Fairies. Misdreavus, who once was checked by Scraggy, simply OHKOes it with an unboosted Dazzling Gleam. The ever-popular Fighting-types check Scraggy easily, although Scraggy receives little competition in return as a Fighting-type sweeper.

Dragon Dance
########
name: Dragon Dance
move 1: Dragon Dance
move 2: Knock Off
move 3: Drain Punch
move 4: High Jump Kick / Poison Jab
ability: Shed Skin / Moxie
item: Eviolite
evs: 36 HP / 156 Atk / 36 Def / 36 SpD / 212 Spe
nature: Jolly / Adamant

Moves
========
  • Dragon Dance is the crux of the set, and is used to set up a sweep late-game, only once it's checks and counters are weakened.
  • Knock Off is the main attack move, and should be used early- to mid-game to weaken your checks and counters.
  • Drain Punch is the primary attack move, and can be used to regain health.
  • High Jump Kick is super strong, and can KO stuff easier than Drain Punch can.
  • Poison Jab can 2hko Spritzee after a little prior damage and Knock Off. It also hits Cottonee and some other grass-types harder.

Set Details
========
  • EVs maximize speed and give you extra points in bulk, the rest is thrown into attack for power. jolly is chosen to outspeed 21 speed scarfers. Eviolite is chosen to give extra bulk, and it can give you opportunities to set up multiple dragon dances
  • Shed Skin is chosen so you don't have to worry so much about status. Moxie can be used for a snowball effect on more offensive teams.
  • A more offensive spread of 36 HP / 236 Atk / 212 Spe is usable if you prefer the boost in damage output. You get a higher chance of an OHKO on Fletchling with an unboosted High Jump Kick, and you deal more damage to Spritzee with Poison Jab at +1.

Usage Tips
========
  • you should only set up a dragon dance once your checks and counters are weakened, but before then scraggy can easily come in over the course of the match to weaken his own checks and counters using knock off
  • works well on offense, bulky offense, balanced, basically whatever team you wanna build around it will work, thanks to its bulk and potential power

Team Options
========
  • Fletchling can kill Fighting-types, and Scraggy kills flying-resists in turn.
  • Pawniard forms a double-dark core, so the two can weaken eachother's checks and counters so one can sweep
  • Carvanha also forms a double-dark core, and provides Destiny Bond support to KO checks.
  • missy can burn stuff and weaken teams so scraggy can sweep
  • Larvesta and other flame body users are really helpful to beat fighting-types and fairies. Scraggy also resists Rock-type attacks for them.
  • appreciates status spreaders in general, since they give you more set-up opportunities. the regencore is an example
  • entry hazards from Dwebble or ferroseed help

Choice Scarf
########
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: High Jump Kick
move 2: Knock Off
move 3: Drain Punch
move 4: Poison Jab
ability: Moxie
item: Choice Scarf
evs: 36 HP / 236 Atk / 212 Spe
nature: Jolly

Moves
========
  • High Jump Kick is a great STAB to revenge kill with and can be used to clean late-game once all resists and immunities have been removed.
  • Knock Off is another great revenge killing and cleaning option.
  • Drain Punch can be used for healing.
  • poison jab for faries

Set Details
========
  • maximize power and speed to maximize cleaning and revenge killing potential
  • moxie allows for a devastating snowball effect especially against weakened teams

Usage Tips
========
  • revenge killer and cleaner for offensive and bulky offense teams, not so much balance
  • best used lategame or whenever you need to revenge kill
  • you could use it to weaken it's own checks, but this set isn't as bulky and thus cant last as long

Team Options
========
  • can clean up after things like np missy and mixkrow tear through teams
  • pawniard again omg, pursuit is really helpful for eliminating ghosts, but it's not necessary
  • knock off support in general helps you clean up
  • entry hazards for easier koes, Dwebble can work well

Other Options
########
  • A bulky Intimidate set can be used to check physical attackers. You can also use a similar set with Dragon Dance.
  • Zen Headbutt hits Croagunk harder than any of your other moves, and hits other Fighting-types for good damage.
  • Iron Head can be used over Poison Jab if you prefer the Flinch chance, although the super-effective hit on Cottonee and Poison chance from Poison Jab makes this option somewhat inferior.

Checks & Counters
########

**Fighting-types**: Stuff like Mienfoo, Timburr, Meditite, and Croagunk. They can take Scraggy's moves with a bulkier set, and can KO with their STAB. Croagunk has the advantage of resisting both STABs.

**Flying-types**: Fletchling, Murkrow, etc. They can revenge kill it and usually outspeed (unless scraggy is boosted) while hitting it with super-effective STAB. A max attack itemless Fletchling has a chance of OHKOing with it's priority Acrobatics after Stealth Rock, but the unboosted Dragon Dance set can 2HKO Bulky Fletchling with High Jump Kick.

**Fairy-types**: Resists both STABs, hit 4x super effective. Cottonee can Encore Dragon Dance and set up.

**Ghost-types**: Ghost-types can switch in on High Jump Kick on the scarf set to force it to take recoil damage. Misdreavus can now hit Scraggy with Dazzling Gleam to completely remove it from the game, something it couldn't do before.

**Choice Scarf Holders**: Choice Scarf Pokemon carrying a super-effective attack such as Murkow, Mienfoo, and Dazzling Gleam Misdreavus can be used to KO a +1 Scraggy.

Overview
########
  • threatening dragon dance sweeper with STAB knock off
  • can clean teams with a moxie scarf set
  • three useful abilities, nice bulk even without Eviolite, and a good speed tier for scarf and dragon dance
  • status hurts without shed skin
  • other fighting-types can take it's attacks and KO with their stab
  • now checked by Misdreavus
  • not much competition from them as a boosting sweeper though
  • stupid fairies

Agreed. Also, maybe a bulky DD set?
Eviolite already makes the current DD set pretty bulky, so probably not this.

Also, Kavatika, put Iron Head in somewhere with Poison Jab, as flinch > poison; however, Poison Jab hits Cottonee 4x SE, but it's your call.

before this goes anywhere blara told me a better spread to run and why

36 hp / 156 attack / 36 def / 36 spd / 212 spe
jolly / adamant

basically you trade 1 attack point for 3 points of bulk which is totally worth it. the only time id recommend the current spread is with adamant but even then its whatever.

also move the hjk slash onto poison jab. there is basically no reason ever to not run drain punch and having a poison se attack seems cool but tbh its very whatever with the proper team set up.

yeah i know you arent done im just going through some now and decided to talk

alright prem I did that stuff and some other stuff mentioned above. this is more or less ready for qc, but I'll still be putting more details in as I test things, like the scarf set

I think Poison Jab is objectionably better as it hits Cottonee harder and likewise just gets the super effective hit on Grass-types anyways. You would want to use Drain Punch against Rock-types, the only things Iron Head hits harder than Poison Jab. I don't think Iron Head even needs a mention really as without Gligar in the meta, you have no reason to flinch something at +1.

mention intimdate in OO with Dragon Dance as well as the bulky set, as it can possibly find more opportunity to set up with it.

instead of mentioning missy in c&C, just mention ghost-types that can check the scarf set if it's locked into HJK. then mention missy and gastly as examples that can outspeed normally and take it out

'Zen Headbutt hits Croagunk and other Fighting-types harder.' <- this makes it sound like zenbut hits fighting-types harder than other moves, when actually HJK does more. rephrase it to 'Zen Headbutt hits Croagunk, who would normally wall Scraggy, whilst still hitting other Fighting-types for good damage'

we spoke about everything else on irc, and you've made the changes so QC 1/3

prem did a version of this in our LC QC project, but upon comparing this thread to his new one that was made in a hurry, they're basically the same and I don't need to manually edit in any changes. Good job. :)

  • Be sure to emphasize that Misdreavus can easily OHKO Scraggy now with Dazzling Gleam, and this is not only significant with a Choice Scarf equipped; this is a huge boon for Misdreavus, as last generation when facing Scraggy, the most it could do against it if it didn't switch out was either hit it with HP Fighting (not even close to a OHKO), burn it with Will-O-Wisp and hope Shed Skin didn't activate, or Taunt it to block Dragon Dance, and all three were risky options. Now it can simply just Dazzling Gleam with practically any set and Scraggy's gone, making it not anywhere near the problem it once was for Misdreavus. Highly significant.

Everything else looks optimal and up to par. QC 2/3 ♥

Ok after some discussion with other QC members and etc., here are my thoughts:

-On Dragon Dance set, mention the spread 36 HP / 236 Atk / 212 Spe Adamant Nature as it is a very viable alternative to the current spread. Mention it somewhere in the set or other options if you're not allowed to mention it directly in the set. You get a few extra OHKO possibilities.

A sort of meh example, but one I found thus far is 37.5% chance to OHKO Fletchling with High Jump Kick as opposed to 6.3% or less with other spreads, you take the same amount of damage from itemless Acrobatics and live it with both spreads. You also do a bit more damage against Spritzee with a +1 Poison Jab (but not +0).

However, the extra bulk/speed could come in handy (Jolly with max attack isn't worth it as it hardly changes significant damage calculations), so although Scraggy is a late game sweeper, it often favors its bulk alongside Drain Punch hence why max Atk Adamant isn't the first option.

-On Choice Scarf set, is there a reason there is 36 EVs in Def as opposed to HP? If there isn't any significant calculations I'm unaware of, then move it to HP, it will often have more use than an extra point in Defense and it benefits both Defense and Special Defense.

-Other Options, mention Iron Head as an option over Poison Jab. The extra damage on Cottonee and the poison chance make Poison Jab superior to it (mostly just because of Cottonee), but sometimes that 10% flinch chance could be game-changing, it's down to preference and whether or not you're comfortable with gambling on a flinch chance to win a losing game. It may have more warrant on the Choice Scarf set, however, so you aren't locked into a move that Steel-Types are immune and could have a free switch into, although Iron Head wouldn't have been doing much damage anyway.

-Checks and Counters, mention specifically that Fletchling has priority SE STAB Acrobatics, but keep in mind this calculation from a Bulky Itemless Fletchling vs. DD Scraggy:

196+ Atk Fletchling Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 36 HP / 36 Def Eviolite Scraggy (has 22 HP): 18-24 (81.8 - 109%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
(18, 18, 18, 20, 20, 20, 20, 20, 20, 20, 20, 20, 20, 20, 20, 24)

156 Atk Scraggy High Jump Kick vs. 156 HP / 92 Def Fletchling (has 23 HP): 18-22 (78.2 - 95.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
(18, 18, 19, 19, 19, 19, 19, 19, 19, 21, 21, 21, 21, 21, 21, 22)

Finally, good job, sorry this took so long for me to respond back to you :). QC 3/3 Enjoy writing this up man, thanks.
