Shellder hit the mechanical and movepool jackpot in Generation V. Shellder's physical movepool got a major upgrade, boosting the power and/or accuracy of all its multi-hit moves. Additionally, multi-hit moves now break through Focus Sash and the updated Sturdy, Shellder finally got a respectable physical Water STAB (as well as Hydro Pump to offer a high power/low accuracy alternative to Surf), and as if that weren't enough, Shellder now has one of the most unbalanced stat-up moves in the game, Shell Break.

Skill Link is and will always be Shellder's bread and butter. With an acceptable Attack score of 65 and just enough speed to break the 20 threshold with a Jolly nature, Shellder will be a menacing anti-lead and revenge killer in Generation V. It's specialty in Generation IV was getting around Substitute, and now it can bypass Focus Sash as well.

Name: Scarf Anti-Lead
Shellder @ Choice Scarf
EVs: 36 HP / 236 Atk / 196 Spe
Nature: Jolly (+Spe, -SpA)
Ability: Skill Link
~Icicle Spear
~Rock Blast
~Shell Blade
~Ice Shard / Explosion

With Jolly and maximum speed, Shellder's Choice Scarf set reaches 21 Speed, enough to outspeed any other lead that doesn't have its own Choice Scarf. With the ability to bypass Focus Sash and Sturdy with either Icicle Spear or Rock Blast, it can defeat many of the various Stealth Rock leads that employ Focus Sash. Both moves have an impressive 125 Base Power, but it's spread out over 5 hits. Shell Blade rounds out the set, and while it technically has lower Base Power than either of the multi-hit moves, it does hit several targets of interest more effectively, specifically Aron and Bronzor. The final move is based on preference. Shellder has excellent physical defense, so it can handle many of the common priority moves. Of specific interest is DDDratini's Extremespeed, which usually outsped Shellder before it's priority increase anyway, but it still gives Sheller an option if Dratini is locked into Outrage. Otherwise use Explosion. Even though it possesses only 250 power without STAB, it still deals a lot of damage to important threats, and is an excellent move on the way out.

Name: Broken Shell(der)
Shellder @ Pre-evolution Stone / Life Orb
EVs: 236 Atk / 36 Def / 196 Spe
Nature: Naughty / Naive
Ability: Skill Link
~ Shell Break
~ Rock Blast
~ Ice Shard
~ Surf / Hydro Pump

After a Shell Break, Shellder posseses an immense 34 Attack, 22 Special Attack, and 26 Speed (or 32/22/28 with Naive). Combined with its excellent offensive coverage and a priority move, it can be incredibly difficult to stop Shellder once it sets up. Two items are presented for the set. Pre-Evolution Stone gives Shellder extra bulk before setup, but afterwards negates the drops from Shell Break, allowing Shellder to use its fearsome offensive stats while keeping its excellent 17 Defense intact. Life Orb on the other hand allows Shellder to go on an all-out rampage, consuming only 1 HP for each attack it uses. In order to catch Naughty Shellder, the opponent must have 18 Speed before Choice Scarf. For Naive Shellder, the values are 19 to catch and 20 to outrun. Presently only Diglett, Elekid, and Voltorb can claim to do the latter, but Choice Scarf is rarely their most effective set, and Diglett still falls victim to +2 Ice Shard. Worse still, Ice Shard is not a contact move and so will never set off Static or Aftermath.

Tesshido is the most naturally occuring counter to Shellder, with its impressive defenses and Steel/Grass typing to resist Rock and Water, so in Other Options, Shellder can carry Hidden Power Fire to take care of the pest.

Discuss the new, improved Shellder at your leisure.

If anything, Shellder should be an extremely cool, cute, and cuddly Pokemon to battle with. The upgrade to its multi-hit moves just makes it all the more threatening, especially since 17 Attack isn't exactly weak. Shell Break may be able to bring Shellder up to a new level, especially with the Pre-evolution Stone. Shellder really has some nice options going into Generation 5 that I'm excited for.

Fuck yeah Shellder. Shellder got a prettt big but deserved boost this gen. Especially the Shell Break set looks like it can do some serious damage(=sweep your ass).

I like the looks of this, I think this could be another great contender for 5th gen little cup, too bad it comes at the advent of the deadly smugleaf, but maybe it will be able to stick it's tongue out to the rest of the metagame with that awesome shell break!

After a Shell Break, 252 Speed Jolly Shellder outspeeds all Tsutarja (including Choiice Scarfed varieties.) and KO's with Icicle Spear.
Oh man. This. Is. GREATNESS.
Nuff said.

Just like Cloyster with Shell Break is powerful as hell, it comes in the LC version. I am definitely trying this out. Icicle Spear + Rock Blast + Shell Break + Skill Link = badass.
