Silly Things You've Seen In Other Metagames

AV Doublade? Really? There was something in The Smog about this...let me find it...ah, here it is!

The Smog Issue 35 said:
Putting an Assault Vest on Doublade is one of the worst possible things you could do with it. Not only does Doublade lose access to Swords Dance to boost its Attack stat while using the item, but it also misses the chance to use Eviolite, which does the same thing to Doublade's Special Defense stat while also giving the same boost to its already excellent physical bulk and still allowing it to use Swords Dance. The same applies to every other NFE in the game as well; there's no reason to use Assault Vest on them when Eviolite's around.
Anyway, your semi-daily dose of AG horror.
  • (R) Steel mono, since this player is playing the part of a Gym leader. We've got Empoleon, Excadrill, Mega Aggron, Heatran, Ferrothorn...good, good, good, good, good...Durant? Um, Scizor much? (I assume the typing is the draw here, although Scizor is also a better physical wall and physical attacker.)
  • (R) Along those lines, were you not in character, here are some other Steel-types AG lets you play with: Genesect, Aegislash, Mega Lucario, Mega Mawile, Dialga. (And Arceus-Steel.)
  • (L) Air Balloon Conkeldurr. With Brick Break. Drain Punch much? Especially since it could've probably beaten half the team on its own.
  • (L) Everything with Brick Break. As this was presumably a challenge match and our "challenger" was thus aware of the opposing team, that does not excuse loading Primal Groudon with the move.
And another.
  • (R) Galvantula with Spider Web (that's a trapping move, by the way), Toxic, Thunder Wave, and Light Screen, while trying to stack Toxic and paralysis. Twice, the second time versus Togekiss. It then tried to T-Wave Togekiss, who was, again, already paralyzed.
  • (R) Amoonguss trying to Toxic the same Xerneas.
  • (L) Synchronize Gardevoir, which in this case came quite in handy against the SwagPlay Liepard facing it.
  • (R) Mega Kangaskhan with Retaliate. Probably the best revenge killer money can buy, but let's hope the other three slots can cover you.
  • (R) Shedinja with Swagger and Frustration. Yeah, Sheddy, I'm with you there.

I decided to take a look at an Inheritance tour in the tournaments room, which is notorious for people playing in metas they haven't bothered to learn. I'm not going to type up everything because I'm posting this as the tour is happening.

Round 1:
http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/inheritance-228419625
Most of this shit would be bad even in OU, let alone a meta where the power creep is off the charts.

Round 2:
He timed out before the battle started. Not that uncommon for tours.

Round 3:
http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/inheritance-228421289
He used an OU ScoliPass team, and outskilled me with the most crucial crit I'll probably see.

So I decided to follow him and see what I got.

Round 4:
http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/inheritance-228423979
OU ScoliPass vs. Offensive Venomoth and ScoliPass + Trick Room. Plus some of the worst plays I have ever seen, much less in round 4 of a tournament.
★airpuredodo:Run little potato

Semifinals:
http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/inheritance-228425456
OU Offensive Venomoth and ScoliPass + Trick Room vs. an ACTUAL TEAM. With a non-mega Ampharos that I don't know what the hell was doing but I trust his judgment as he made it to semis. Needless to say, the actual team won.

In the other semifinals...
http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/inheritance-228427359
I have no idea what the guy with the Genesect is doing(when he's not momentum stalling). Yes, Flash Fire Genesect can stay in on Heatran. No, spamming dragon pulse is not a good idea. Later on, one of the most unfortunate uses of Haze I've ever seen. And the guy with the Genesect not being able to tell a counter from a check.

Finals:
http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/inheritance-228428723
The first match I've seen with 2 actual teams.

Bonus:

This is in here solely for what happened on turn 2.

That's why I love randbats. You can sweep with just about anything (except Unown). Of course, the downside is that you can in turn be swept by just about anything.

I saw a Belly Drum Poliwrath. That is all.

Also Belly Drum Poliwrath with a Lum Berry. Um, okay?

With Protect...

...and Brick Break. I mean, you get Close Combat, right? Nope.

Okay, you get Superpower, then? Nope.

High Jump Kick? Nope.

Cross Chop? Jump Kick? Sky Uppercut? Drain Punch?

...you mean Brick Break is actually its best option for physical STAB? It's so bad that its Smogon Dex analysis actually has a listed SubPunch set? It's one of the top threats in PU at the moment but it achieves that because of its special sets?

Geez, GameFreak, make another Nidoking, why doncha? (A much more apt comparison than you might think. Its attack got buffed this gen, but it has no movepool to use it with.)

EDIT: The set I saw (BD/Protect/BB) happened to be the first listed set last gen, which is a VGC set. VGC12, to be precise. That player does know VGC is a Doubles game and what works there doesn't work in 6v6 Singles, right?

Quick Claw Horn Drill Rhydon, and not one, not two, but THREE, things running Confuse Ray despite two other mons on that team having Swagger.

The bad stuff being:
  • Genesect-Douse with Flame Charge, and only using the 120 BP move it gave up its item slot for twice. It got a very nice lead-sweep to start, though.
  • Vaporeon gets a freeze, the lucky bastard. Too bad it's a zero-turn freeze. I hate those. It also had Aqua Tail. Um, Scald? Surf?
  • Nidoking with Body Slam, and using that on the keys, which are Steel-type, remember. Also had Aqua Tail. I know its physical movepool sucks, but Body Slam and Aqua Tail?

Check this out.
  • (R) Abomasnow with Grass Whistle (lol 55% accuracy) and Leech Seed. Looks like somebody opted for bulk, but with seven weaknesses including a double to Fire, you're not stalling very much.
  • (L) Mixed Scrafty with Focus Miss, allowing Abomasnow to last four turns (including a crit and, of course, a miss). With Moxie. Base 45, folks, and with a mismatched ability to boot. Also had Foul Play and Iron Head.
  • (L) Mixed Garchomp with Surf. MixChomp is a thing, but...really? Surf?
  • (L) Special Scizor. Okay, this has to be a troll team or something. Nobody can be that clueless.
  • (L) Mega Gardevoir with Moonblast and using Psychic on a Houndoom.
  • (R) Mega Houndoom with Overheat. Great for wallbreakers and pivots, not so much for sweepers. Also had Beat Up.
  • (R) Sawsbuck with Jump Kick, which it normally uses, and Wild Charge, which is not a bad option for Fliers, but no Life Orb, because this was hopefully an AoA set. (Vest?)
  • (L) Your winner, folks! Thanks to an actually competent Vileplume.

Except Ninetales is a special attacker, so there's no point.

Anyway, let me see if I can find something. Ah, here we go (shortie):
  • (L) Mewtwo with Secret Power. That's not even that good for hax fishing.
  • (R) Darkrai with Ominous Wind. DARK. IS. NOT. GHOST. (Oh, and you get Shadow Ball.) It gets the boost.
  • (L) Monferno (please have an Eviolite).
  • (L) Turn 8: Timer on, timer off. Timer on, timer off. Make up your mind.
Another, to make up for the shortie, this STABmons game:
  • (R) A Baton Pass, Mawile (Geomancy) to Milotic (Coil), but a Scizor sets up alongside them, kills Milotic, and continues to set up.
  • (R) Thundurus with Feather Dance. Put in some work, especially later on when it started Oblivion Winging stuff.
  • (L) Scizor hard-switching to Crawdaunt (understandable considering the Attack drops).
  • (R) Special Mawile. Base 55, folks.
  • (L) Gengar with Sludge Wave, reigniting the age-old debate. (Basically, a poison chance one-third of what it would be in exchange for 5 BP and the ability to hit Chesnaught.)
  • (R) Presumably a joke team (the name).
And here (back in AG):
  • (R) Charizard-Y with HP Ground, but it stays in on Ampharos. Cue the Thunderbolt.
  • (L) Ampharos, for its part, is Mega, but has Cotton Guard. Must think it's Altaria or something.
  • (L) CM/Psyshock Reuniclus with Acid Armor, continuing to set up while Aegislash Shadow Sneaks it. Within one hit of death, if finally lets Diggersby in to absorb it.
  • (R) Sash Mienshao with Reversal. Did some nice work, too.
  • (L) Accelgor with Final Gambit. It worked, but base 80 is not the best stat for that.
  • (L) Breloom gets BellyJet Azumarill and thinks it has the game won. Last mon on the other side is Rhyperior...and Bullet Seed only hits twice. Alomomola eventually gets the win for L, but let's not get cocky here.

Randbats are silly, period. Even in Gen VI when the sets are at least somewhat viable. Rotom-Fan always has an Air Balloon (but usually with Trick), for example.

I love his reaction though after you lost Vileplume and he realized Cofag wasn't gonna get to Sheddy (turn 13, for the viewers). I play randbats. I know the pain when you realize all too late that the mon you just lost was the only thing stopping the opposing Sheddy or whatever (and this being randbats, it can be whatever) from ripping a hole in your team. That reaction is completely warranted. (Also, that Kyurem-N lived a +6. Kudos, even if it couldn't touch it.)

In this shortie, another UU/OU team comes up against an Ubers squad. This one is weird. UU/OU leads with Swellow and surprises the (presumably) SubSitrus Darkrai lead facing it, which tries to Dark Void on turn 2 after Swellow's already shown its Toxic Orb. Darkrai goes down, in comes Dialga for Swellow to presumably put a decent dent in before dying...UU/OU forfeits. That could've actually been a pretty good battle.

Brace yourselves. Really good one coming up.
  • (R) Mixed non-mega Sceptile with Outrage, using it on Ferrothorn Also misses a Leaf Storm...on Ferrothorn.
  • (L) Ferro, meanwhile, has Thunder, which it uses on Sceptile...and then Garchomp. No, Chomp didn't switch in. Also had Flash Cannon and Giga Impact (and Iron Head, aka the one actually good move on the set).
  • (R) Garchomp with Dragon Rush and no Hone Claws. Now, Rush does have 100 BP and a 20% flinch, so I can see why it appeals to some people. Problem is that damn accuracy. (Hone Claws helps with this and Stone Edge, so it's a feasible setup option, though no SD.) Also had Aerial Ace. Flying coverage hits what, exactly?
  • (R) Floatzel sets up rain for itself...while Kingdra, a known Swift Swim user, is facing it. More funny than silly, since Floatzel is itself a Swimmer (and was this time). Also funny: it Roars Kingdra out...into Salamence. Cue the Ice Beam.
  • (L) For that matter, Salamence not getting the hell out on Floatzel, especially in the rain. When in doubt, a Water-type has Ice Beam. Good rule to observe, I find.
  • (R) Waaaait a minute...why does Floatzel have Ice Beam? It's a physical attacker.
  • (L) Today on Who Wants to Be a Darkrai, it's Mega Gardevoir! (It's not as good as Gengar at being a pseudo-Darkrai due to lacking Shadow Tag and Nightmare, but it does have STAB Dream Eater, and no Tag hardly matters when your opponent isn't switching.)
  • (R) Gengar with Hypnosis/Dream Eater of its own, which puts Gardy to sleep, and Dark Pulse. DARK. IS. NOT. GHOST. Was mixed, with Brick Break as the fourth move. Gardy mercifully put it out of its misery with a Psychic.
  • (R) Special Mega Charizard-X with Flamethrower.
  • (L) Gardy sweeps with Hypnosis/Dream Eater. 55% accuracy is so good...except when it is.
