[Overview]

Skarmory, one of the best physical walls since GSC, returns in BW to protect its team from Ubers' physical titans: Extreme Killer Arceus, Groudon, Rayquaza, and Excadrill. In fact, the steel bird is the best Swords Dance Arceus counter in general, specifically Extreme Killer Arceus, that exists. With base 140 Defense, reliable recovery in Roost, great defensive typing, and a wide arsenal of support moves such as Spikes, Stealth Rock, Whirlwind, Toxic, Taunt, and more, Skarmory makes for a great Pokemon to support your team. Skarmory's Sturdy ability allows it to tank and scout hits when at full health, which can prove helpful in some situations such as when facing Choice Scarf Kyogre or Palkia. Skarmory does have its downfalls, though; it is worn down quickly by common special attacks such as Surf and Focus Blast. Weaknesses to Fire- and Electric-type moves also make it prone to Fire Blast and Thunder, two moves that are very common in Ubers. Nevertheless, the armored bird's qualities are by far greater than its frailties, making it a great addition to any team, be it offensive or defensive one.

    [SET]
    name: Support
    move 1: Spikes
    move 2: Roost
    move 3: Whirlwind
move 4: Toxic / Taunt / Brave Bird
    item: Leftovers
    ability: Sturdy
    nature: Impish
    evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD

    [SET COMMENTS]

Spikes-stacking is an extremely dangerous playstyle in Ubers because it's very hard to Rapid Spin with bulky Ghost-types lurking everywhere—Ghost Arceus and the Giratina formes. Skarmory is one of the lucky Pokemon to get access to Spikes, which can easily wear down the opponent, and, thanks to its excellent defensive typing, it can often lay down several layers in one game. With the ability to phaze with Whirlwind, Skarmory can easily stack more and more residual damage on the opposing Pokemon, eventually KOing them unless they have a recovery move. Roost provides reliable recovery, and it grants Skarmory the ability to take on a few, even boosted, physical hits with its base 140 Defense; this also makes it the best Extreme Killer Arceus counter you can find. Toxic is the preferred option in the last slot, as without it, Skarmory will not be able to stop Extreme Killer Arceus one-on-one. Toxic is also a great move against common switch-ins to Skarmory such as Kyogre, Palkia, Reshiram, and setup sweepers such as Calm Mind Arceus, as none of them appreciate Toxic. Taunt stops Pokemon such as Ferrothorn and Forretress from freely setting up entry hazards on Skarmory, whereas Brave Bird lets Skarmory attack in case it has been Taunted itself.

    [ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The EV spread and nature ensure that Skarmory will not be 2HKOed by a +2 Life Orb Extreme Killer Arceus's Brick Break if it hasn't taken Stealth Rock damage, while still retaining great special bulk. Moreover, Dialga with 56 Special Attack EVs has a very small chance of OHKOing Skarmory with Draco Meteor followed by Fire Blast (if both roll max damage, it does 103.91% factoring Stealth Rock damage). Here are a few damage calculations that demonstrate Skarmory's great bulk:

+2 Life Orb 252 Atk+ Normal Arceus Brick Break 44.61% - 52.69%

56 SpA Dialga Draco Meteor 36.22% - 42.81

-2 56 SpA Dialga Fire Blast 41.31% - 49.1%

4 Atk Groudon Stone Edge 20.95% - 24.55%

252 Atk Rayquaza Outrage 43.11% - 50.89%

252 Atk Salamence Outrage 30.53% - 36.22%

252 SpA Palkia Draco Meteor 37.72% - 44.31%

+1 0 Atk Dialga Outrage 22.75% - 26.94%

If you wish to ensure Skarmory's victory against Extreme Killer Arceus, an EV spread of 252 HP / 184 Def / 72 SpD can be used. With this spread, Skarmory will never be 2HKOed by a +2 Life Orb Brick Break from Adamant Arceus with 252 Attack EVs even after Stealth Rock damage. If your team lacks Stealth Rock, it can be used over Spikes, but Spikes is generally a much better option as Skarmory is one of the few Pokemon that learn it, unlike Stealth Rock. Red Card can be used to take advantage of Skarmory's Sturdy ability, as it will allow Skarmory to stack more entry hazard damage on the opponent.

Kyogre is a remarkable teammate; the rain it provides thanks to Drizzle nullifies Skarmory's weakness to Fire-type attacks, and the Spikes support Skarmory provides allows Kyogre to get past its usual counters, such as Palkia. Gastrodon synergizes perfectly with Skarmory, as it is immune to Electric-type attacks and resists Fire-type attacks, whereas Skarmory 4x resists Grass-type attacks. Moreover, Gastrodon can easily sponge the special attacks aimed at Skarmory and vice versa. Chansey and Blissey play similar roles to Gastrodon. They do not resist Fire- or Electric-type attacks, but their huge base Special Defense and HP allow them to easily sponge Fire Blasts and Thunders. In addition to this, they can cure Skarmory from status effects with Heal Bell and can pass enormous Wishes to Skarmory and its teammates. The Giratina formes also make fantastic partners, as they too synergize perfectly with Skarmory, and their spinblocking qualities ensure Skarmory's Spikes-stacking won't go to waste. A Ground-type Pokemon to switch into Thunder is advised, making Excadrill, Ground Arceus, Garchomp, and the aforementioned Gastrodon great teammates. Excadrill can also provide Rapid Spin support, allowing Skarmory to avoid the 2HKO from Extreme Killer Arceus and Dialga.

    [Other Options]

Unfortunately, Skarmory does not have many other options. A spread of 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD can be used, but Skarmory needs all the Special Defense it can get to tank common special moves such as Draco Meteor. A gimmicky Swords Dance + Autotomize set can be used, but it would not work well with Skarmory's poor selection of STAB attacks and mediocre base 80 Attack.

    [Checks and Counters]

As previously mentioned, Skarmory has a glaring weakness to special attackers due to its mediocre base 70 Special Defense, so Pokemon such as Reshiram, Kyogre, and Palkia make fantastic counters, though they will not enjoy being poisoned. Dialga deserves a special mention as it can switch into everything Skarmory has, including Toxic thanks to its Steel typing, and can OHKO with Fire Blast, or Thunder if it's raining. Thanks to Rayquaza's Air Lock ability, it ignores any weather changes, so it can come into Skarmory and OHKO with Fire Blast or V-create regardless of the weather. Reshiram, with its Turboblaze ability, and Zekrom, with its Teravolt ability, ignore Sturdy's new effect and can OHKO Skarmory with their Fire- and Electric-type STAB moves, respectively. Xatu also shuts down Skarmory with its Magic Bounce ability and access to Roost.

Unless Skarmory is using Brave Bird, it is completely shut down by Taunt users such as Mewtwo and Thundurus. Although Gliscor is usually unable to touch Skarmory, in fact Skarmory is often considered to be one of its most reliable counters, when running Taunt Gliscor can easily stop Skarmory from doing anything, and can even set up a Substitute on it. Calm Mind Arceus can set up on Skarmory, but unless they carry Refresh, they fear Toxic and do not enjoy being phazed. Ho-Oh can easily OHKO Skarmory with its signature move, Sacred Fire, if it's not raining, but it does not enjoy being phazed if Stealth Rock present. Giratina-O can OHKO with Thunder in the rain and Hidden Power Fire in the sun, but like many others, it does not enjoy being poisoned. Choice Band Terrakion can easily 2HKO Skarmory with Close Combat, whereas the Swords Dance variant can attempt to set up, but it takes 54.32% - 64.19% from Brave Bird at -1 Defense, making it a shaky check. Groudon with a Fire-move, such as Fire Punch, Fire Blast, or Overheat, can land a surprise kill on Skarmory thanks to the sun it summons.

    Careful 252 HP / 128 Def / 128 SpD: 334 HP / 348 Def / 228 SpD
    Impish 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD: 334 HP / 348 Def / 239

You really want those extra SpD points to tank random Spacial Rends.

I like the first spread. The second you're really kind of pushing it, because Skarmory really likes the Special Defense to take on Spacial Rends and Draco Meteors and the like. I've had plenty of cases where I've set up Spikes on -2 Defensive Dialga's Fire Blasts, taking only 40% from it (neutral weather). Change of nature to Impish is good, IMO. Other than that, it doesn't really need much change.

Skarmory's probably one of the most boring but practical Pokemon in the tier, IMO, nothing else to say.

I agree with shrang, I think you should just AC the second spread. Also, you might want to mention that one of the main reasons to use Toxic is to always beat ExtremeKiller Arceus, as Whirlwind fails if Arceus is the last Pokemon.

    Thanks Poppy!

    To-calc list:
    - +2 SE from Groudon
    - EKiller
    - +1 Outrage from Rayquaza and Mence

    +2 SE from Groudon
Both Jolly and Adamant LO 2HKO Skarmory regardless of EV investment. The current EV spread isn't KOed by Adamant LO even after Stealth Rock.
As for the Paradancer set (200 Atk Adamant and Lefties/Lum Berry), the current EV spread is more than likely 2HKOed without Stealth Rock. Avoiding the 2HKO after Stealth Rock is impossible, but 252 HP / 212 Def / 44 SpD avoids the 2HKO without Stealth Rock.

    Ekiller
(Assuming +2 for all of this) Adamant Silk Scarf doesn't 2HKO this spread with ExtremeSpeed or Brick Break even after Stealth Rock. Jolly LO can't 2HKO with either ExtremeSpeed or Brick Break without Stealth Rock, but Brick Break has a small chance of 2HKOing after Stealth Rock. 252 HP / 56 Def / 200 SpD avoids the 2HKO from Jolly LO Brick Break after Stealth Rock. Adamant LO doesn't 2HKO this Skarmory even after Stealth Rock either with ExtremeSpeed, but 252 HP / 184 Def / 72 SpD will avoid the 2HKO from Adamant LO Brick Break after SR.

+1 Outrage from Rayquaza and Mence
Jolly LO Rayquaza doesn't ever 2HKO this EV spread without SR with Outrage, but it has a chance of doing so with it. 252 HP / 128 Def / 128 SpD Impish avoids the 2HKO even with SR. Adamant LO Rayquaza has a chance of 2HKOing this spread without Stealth Rock, and always has a chance of 2HKOing with Stealth Rock (no matter the spread). 252 HP / 60 Def / 196 SpD can avoid the 2HKO from Adamant LO without SR though.
Scarf MoxieMence never 2HKOes this spread, even after Stealth Rock. Life Orb never 2HKOes either without SR, but it has a really small chance of 2HKOing with it. 252 HP / 20 Def / 236 SpD avoids that chance of a 2HKO.

-2 Fire Blast from Defensive Dialga
With 252 HP / 252 SpD and an Impish nature, Roost always recovers more than Fire Blast can do (even after Knock Off or something). Avoiding the 2HKO from -2 Fire Blast after Stealth Rock is kinda useless since you have to use Careful which sucks just for that, and Skarmory can Roost in front of Dialga which makes Stealth Rock useless in the calculations as Skarmory can Roost back to 100% and ignore SR.

    Palkia's Spacial Rend
Scarf's Spacial Rend can easily be outlasted by Roost (doing 31% maximum). Same for Lustrous Orb, but that is kinda irrelevant since it can take down Skarmory easily with one of its other three moves depending on the weather.

    +1 Bulk Up Dialga's Outrage
Skarmory doesn't care about this, +1 Outrage does 26% maximum to the current spread.

Thanks for these EVs, but that list was just to give an example to Skarmory's wall capabilities. I'll look further into them and see which one if the most efficient.

Yeah go with Impish 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD. Skarm needs as much SpD as it can get without compromising its physical bulk. Rest looks good

Toxic makeis the prioreferred option in the last slot, as without it, Skarmory will not be able to stop Extreme Killer Arceus if it's the last remaining Pokemon of the opponent, as it will not be able to phaze it out with Whirlwindone-on-one. Toxic is also makes a great move against common switch-ins, such as Kyogre, Palkia, and Reshiram, and set up sweepers, such as Calm Mind Arceus, as none of them appreciate Toxic. Taunt nullifies any attempt from Pokemon such as Ferrothorn and Forretress to turn Skarmory into a entry hazards setup fodderfrom freely setting up entry hazards on Skarmory, whereas Brave Bird is lets Skarmory attack in case it has been Taunted itself.

    [ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The EV spread and nature esnsure that Skarmory will not be 2HKOed by +2 Life Orb Extreme Killer Arceus's Brick Break without Stealth Rock, while still retaining great special bulk. Moreover, 56 SpA EVs DialgaDialga with 56 Special Attack EVs has a very small chance of OHKOing Skarmory with Draco Meteor followed by Fire Blast (if both roll max damage, it does 103.91%, factoring Stealth Rock damage). Here are a few calculations to demonstrate Skarmory's great bulk:

+2 Life Orb 252 Atk+ Normal Arceus Brick Break 44.61% - 52.69%

56 SpA Dialga Draco Meteor 36.22% - 42.81

-2 56 SpA Dialga Fire Blast (neutral weather) 41.31% - 49.1%

4 Atk Groudon Stone Edge 20.95% - 24.55%

252 Atk Rayquaza Outrage 43.11% - 50.89%

252 Atk Salamence Outrage 30.53% - 36.22%

252 SpA Palkia Draco Meteor 37.72% - 44.31%

+1 0 Atk Dialga Outrage 22.75% - 26.94%

If you wish to ensure Skarmory's victory against Extreme Killer Arceus, an EV spread of 252 HP / 184 Def / 72 SpD can be used. With this spread, Skarmory will never be 2HKOed by +2 Life Orb Brick Break from 252 Attack Adamant Arceus with 252 Attack EVs even after Stealth Rock damage. If your team lacks Stealth Rock, it can be used over Spikes, but generally Spikes is by far better for Skarmory, andSpikes is generally a much better option as Skarmory is one of athe few Pokemon that learns it, unlike Stealth Rock which can be used by a wide amount of Pokemon. Red Card can be used to utilize Skarmory's Sturdy ability, as it will allow Skarmory to stacking more entry hazards damage on the opponent.

Kyogre is a remarkable teammate. T; the rain it provides thanks to Drizzle nullifies Skarmory's weakness to Fire-type attacks, and the Spikes support Skarmory provides allows Kyogre to get past its counters, such as Palkia. Gastrodon synergizes perfectly with Skarmory, as it is immune to Electric-type attacks and resists Fire-type attacks, whereas Skarmory quadruple resists Gras4x resists Grass-type attacks. Moreover, Gastrodon can easily sponge the Sspecial Aattacks aimed at Skarmory and vice versa. Chansey and Blissey fall in the same category asplay similar roles to Gastrodon; t. They do not resist Fire- or Electric-type attacks, but their huge base Special Defense and HP allow them to easily sponge Fire Blasts and Thunders. In addition, they can cure Skarmory from status ineffections with Heal Bell, and can pass huge Wishes to itSkarmory and its teammates. The Giratina formes also make fantastic partners, as they too synergize perfectly with Skarmory, and their spinblocking qualities ensure Skarmory's job won't go to waste. A Ground-type Pokemon to switch into Thunder is advicsed, making Excadrill, Ground Arceus, Garchomp, and the abovforementioned Gastrodon great teammates. Excadrill can also provide Rapid Spin support which can become very helpful, allowing Skarmory to avoid the 2HKO from the situations described in the first paragraph of this section, against Extreme Killer Arceus and Dialga.

    [Other Options]

Unfortunately, Skarmory does not have many other options. 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD can be used, but Skarmory needs all the Special Defense it can have to tank common special moves such as Draco Meteor. A gimmicky Swords Dance + Autotomize set can be used, but Skarmory's STABit would not work well with Skarmory's poor selection of STAB attacks and mediocre base 80 Attack would fail it.

    [Checks and Counters]

As saipreviously mentioned, Skarmory has a glaring weakness to special attackers thanks to its mediocre base 70 SpD, so Pokemon such as Reshiram, Kyogre, and Palkia make fantastic counters, though they will not enjoy being poisoned. Dialga deserves a special mention, as it can switch into everything Skarmory has, including Toxic thanks to its Steel typing, and can OHKO with Fire Blast, or Thunder if it i's raining - Thunder. Thanks to Rayquaza's Air Lock ability, it ignores any weather changes, including rain, so it can come into Skarmory and OHKO with Fire Blast and V-create regardless of the weather. Reshiram, with its Turboblaze ability, and Zekrom, with its Teravolt ability, ignore Sturdy's new mechanicseffect and can OHKO Skarmory with their Fire- and Electric-type STAB moves, respectively. Xatu also shuts down Skarmory with its Magic Bounce ability and access to Roost.

Unless Skarmory is runnusing Brave Bird, it is completely shut down by Taunt users, such as Mewtwo and Thundurus. Gliscor deserves a special mention, as with Taunt, Gliscor counters Skarmory and not vice versa, unlike it may seem likewhile Skarmory can do nothing in return. Calm Mind Arceus variants can set up on Skarmory, but unless they carry Refresh, they fear Toxic and do not enjoy being phazed. Ho-Oh can easily OHKO with its signature move, Sacred Fire, if the weather is not rain, but it does not enjoy being phazed if Stealth Rock is up at allpresent. Giratina-O can OHKO with Thunder in rain and Hidden Power Fire in sun, but like many others, it does not enjoy being poisoned. Choice Band Terrakion can easily 2HKO Skarmory with Close Combat, whereas the Swords Dance variant can attempt to set up, but it takes 54.32% - 64.19% from Brave Bird at -1 Defense, making it a shaky check. Groudon with a Fire-move, such as Fire Punch, Fire Blast, or Overheat, can land a surprise kill on Skarmory, thanks to the sun it summons.

Moreover, Dialga with 56 Special Attack EVs has a very small chance of OHKOing Skarmory with Draco Meteor followed by Fire Blast (if both roll max damage, it does 103.91% factoring Stealth Rock damage). Here are a few calculations to demonstrate Skarmory's great bulk:

+2 Life Orb 252 Atk+ Normal Arceus Brick Break 44.61% - 52.69%

56 SpA Dialga Draco Meteor 36.22% - 42.81

-2 56 SpA Dialga Fire Blast 41.31% - 49.1%

4 Atk Groudon Stone Edge 20.95% - 24.55%

252 Atk Rayquaza Outrage 43.11% - 50.89%

252 Atk Salamence Outrage 30.53% - 36.22%

252 SpA Palkia Draco Meteor 37.72% - 44.31%

+1 0 Atk Dialga Outrage 22.75% - 26.94%

If you wish to ensure Skarmory's victory against Extreme Killer Arceus, an EV spread of 252 HP / 184 Def / 72 SpD can be used. With this spread, Skarmory will never be 2HKOed by +2 Life Orb Brick Break from Adamant Arceus with 252 Attack EVs even after Stealth Rock damage. If your team lacks Stealth Rock, it can be used over Spikes, but Spikes is generally a much better option as Skarmory is one of the few Pokemon that learns it, unlike Stealth Rock. Red Card can be used to utilize Skarmory's Sturdy ability, as it will allow Skarmory to stack more entry hazard damage on the opponent.

Kyogre is a remarkable teammate; the rain it provides thanks to Drizzle nullifies Skarmory's weakness to Fire-type attacks, and the Spikes support Skarmory provides allows Kyogre to get past its counters, such as Palkia. In addition, they can cure Skarmory from status effects with Heal Bell and can pass Wish to Skarmory and its teammates. The Giratina formes also make fantastic partners, as they too synergize perfectly with Skarmory, and their spinblocking qualities ensure Skarmory's job won't go to waste.

252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD can be used, but Skarmory needs all the Special Defense it can have to tank common special moves such as Draco Meteor. A gimmicky Swords Dance + Autotomize set can be used, but it would not work well with Skarmory's poor selection of STAB attacks and mediocre base 80 Attack.

    [Checks and Counters]

As previously mentioned, Skarmory has a glaring weakness to special attackers thanks to its mediocre base 70 SpD, so Pokemon such as Reshiram, Kyogre, and Palkia make fantastic counters, though they will not enjoy being poisoned. Dialga deserves a special mention as it can switch into everything Skarmory has, including Toxic thanks to its Steel typing, and can OHKO with Fire Blast or Thunder if it's raining. Thanks to Rayquaza's Air Lock ability, it ignores any weather changes, so it can come into Skarmory and OHKO with Fire Blast and V-create regardless of the weather. Reshiram, with its Turboblaze ability, and Zekrom, with its Teravolt ability, ignore Sturdy's effect and can OHKO Skarmory with their Fire- and Electric-type STAB moves, respectively. Xatu also shuts down Skarmory with its Magic Bounce ability and access to Roost.

Unless Skarmory is using Brave Bird, it is completely shut down by Taunt users such as Mewtwo and Thundurus. Gliscor deserves a special mention, as with Taunt, Gliscor counters Skarmory while Skarmory can do nothing in return. Calm Mind Arceus variants can set up on Skarmory, but unless they carry Refresh, they fear Toxic and do not enjoy being phazed. Ho-Oh can easily OHKO with its signature move, Sacred Fire, if the weather is not rain, but it does not enjoy being phazed if Stealth Rock is present. Groudon with a Fire-move, such as Fire Punch, Fire Blast, or Overheat, can land a surprise kill on Skarmory thanks to the sun it summons.

    [Overview]

Skarmory, one of the best physical walls since GSC,(Comma) (left over from Ditto Crow's amcheck) returns in BW to protect its team from Ubers' physical titans: Extreme Killer Arceus, Groudon, Rayquaza, and Excadrill. In fact, the steel bird is the best Swords Dance Arceus counter in general, and specifically Extreme Killer Arceus, that exists. With base 140 Defense, reliable recovery in Roost, great defensive typing, and a wide arsenal of support moves such as Spikes, Stealth Rock, Whirlwind, Toxic, Taunt, and more, Skarmory makes a great Pokemon to support your team. Skarmory's Sturdy ability allows it to tank and scout hits when at full health, which can be proven helpful in some situations such as facing Choice Scarf Kyogre or Palkia. Skarmory does have its downfalls, though; it is worn down quickly by common special attacks such as Surf and Focus Blast. Weaknesses to Fire- and Electric-type moves also make it prone to Fire Blast and Thunder, two moves that are very common in Ubers. Nevertheless, the armored bird's qualities are by far greater than its frailties, making it a great addition to any team, be it offensive or defensive.

    [SET COMMENTS]

Spikes-stacking is an extremely dangerous playstyle in Ubers because it's very hard to Rapid Spin with bulky Ghost-types lurking everywhere—Ghost Arceus and the Giratina formes. Skarmory is one of the lucky Pokemon to get access to Spikes, which can easily wear down the opponent. Furthermore, Skarmory's great defensive typing makes it a great addition to any team that wishes to utilize Spikes for its own. With the ability to phaze with Whirlwind, Skarmory can easily stack more and more damage on the opposing Pokemon, eventually KOing them unless they have a recovery move. Roost provides reliable recovery, and it grants Skarmory the ability to take on a few, even boosted, physical hits with its base 140 Defense; this also makes it the best Extreme Killer Arceus counter you can find.

Toxic is the prioreferred preferred option in the last slot, as without it, Skarmory will not be able to stop Extreme Killer Arceus one-on-one. Toxic is also a great move against common switch-ins such as Kyogre, Palkia, Reshiram, and setup sweepers such as Calm Mind Arceus, as none of them appreciate Toxic. Taunt nullifies any attempt from Pokemon such as Ferrothorn and Forretress from freely setting up entry hazards on Skarmory, whereas Brave Bird lets Skarmory attack in case it has been Taunted itself.
