Slowbro (Gen 4, OU Analysis)*

Slowbro is a pretty fantastic Pokemon in both UU and OU, and while it is overall much more useful in UU than in OU, it cannot be denied that Slowbro does fill a special little niche in the OU metagame for stopping dangerous threats such as Gyarados, Lucario, and Salamence.

STATUS: Uploaded! Good job Snorlaxe

[Overview]

While Slowbro seems like an odd choice for the OU tier, it can be handy for checking some of the metagame's top threats. When using Slowbro in OU, make sure that it isn't being used in a role where it can be outclassed by Suicune and Vaporeon. Slowbro is a blessing on teams that struggle with Dragon Dancers (excluding Tyranitar), and will see the most use on those teams. With its rock-solid Defense and decent Special Defense, however, it can be used as either a physical wall or a mixed wall. Slowbro does greatly struggle with Scizor, however; Scizor can easily switch in on Slowbro's relatively weak Surf and spam a STAB U-turn. Tyranitar can also be a huge problem for Slowbro, as it can deal hefty damage to it via Crunch. While Slowbro is quite bulky, it will fall to powerful special attacks. Choice Specs Latias's Draco Meteor hits Slowbro for huge amounts of damage, and Rotom-A's Shadow Ball will also deal a hefty hit to Slowbro. Don't let these negative factors discourage you, however, as Slowbro can be a huge asset to a team when used correctly.

[SET COMMENTS]

Slowbro is usually seen in the UU metagame, but it can also be used very well in the OU environment. It is a perfect counter to Machamp, and can take on other top threats like Dragon Dance Gyarados and Salamence very well. It also has reliable recovery in the form of Slack Off, which sets it apart from its fellow bulky Water-type Suicune.

Surf gives Slowbro a reliable STAB to work with. In the third slot, the move that you use is entirely up to what Pokemon your team needs Slowbro to check. Ice Beam can OHKO Salamence, while Hidden Power Electric is a guaranteed 2HKO on Gyarados, who struggles to 2HKO in return, even with a +1 Adamant Life Orb Bounce. In the final slot, two moves can be used. Thunder Wave is a nice choice for providing paralysis support for slower sweepers like Bulk Up Machamp. Toxic, on the other hand, is more useful for stall teams, as Toxic Slowbro can stall out many of the OU tier's top physical forces with Slack Off.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Slowbro counters Dragon Dance Salamence and Gyarados, but also fares well against other common sweepers such as physical Infernape, Metagross, and Flygon. It is also notable as a perfect counter to Machamp, thanks to Own Tempo (which prevents confusion), a resistance to DynamicPunch, and its low base Speed, which ensures it never takes double the damage from Payback. Slowbro is particularly good at taking neutral unboosted physical attacks, as most do not even 2HKO, and Slowbro can slowly bring the opposing Pokemon to the ground with a combination of Surf, Toxic, and Slack Off. Slowbro faces competition for a team slot from Suicune and Vaporeon, but has distinct advantages over both. Suicune must use the unreliable Rest and Sleep Talk combination for recovery, while Slowbro has access to Slack Off. Slowbro's ability to use Thunder Wave to stop sweepers that it can't hit effectively sets it apart from Vaporeon. Its Psychic sub-typing also lets it counter Fighting-types more effectively than either Suicune or Vaporeon.

Slowbro generally fits better on defensive or stall teams, as its natural physical bulk and access to instant recovery tend to draw out matches and make for a slower game; however, that isn't to say that Slowbro can't be used on offensive teams. Slowbro makes a great partner for Pokemon that enjoy having the opponent's set-up sweepers taken out of the game. This includes Choice item wielding Pokemon such as Choice Specs Latias and Choice Band Metagross, as predicting incorrectly can lead to some sticky situations (such as if Dragon Dance Gyarados or Salamence switches in on Metagross's Choice-locked Earthquake).

Scizor and Tyranitar, two of the OU tier's most common Pokemon, are huge threats to Slowbro. These Pokemon can switch in rather easily on any of Slowbro's attacks (but Dragon Dance variants of Tyranitar won't enjoy paralysis from Thunder Wave). They can then proceed to severely dent Slowbro with their STAB U-turns and Crunches, respectively. Machamp is a nearly surefire Tyranitar counter, and benefits greatly from Slowbro's paralysis support. Protect Gengar with Hidden Power Fire and Focus Blast can lure and kill both Scizor and non-Choice Scarf Tyranitar. Lucario makes a good partner due to Slowbro's Pursuit weakness, as it can easily come in on a Choice-locked Pursuit from the likes of Scizor, Weavile, and Tyranitar, and proceed to set up a Swords Dance.

[SET]
name: Choice Specs (OU)
move 1: Surf
move 2: Psychic
move 3: Trick
move 4: Fire Blast / Ice Beam / Slack Off
item: Choice Specs
ability: Own Tempo
nature: Modest
evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpA

[SET COMMENTS]

Choice Specs Slowbro can be a dangerous force in OU, as its STAB combination of Surf + Psychic gives great type coverage. An advantage of using Choice Specs Slowbro is that your opponent will never see it coming; Slowbro is uncommon to begin with, and Choice Specs Slowbro is even more so. Slowbro can hit extremely hard with Choice Specs equipped, and as such, should not be underestimated. The great thing about Specs Slowbro is that it defeats its own counters. Scizor and Tyranitar are unable to switch in on a Choice Specs boosted Surf, and Celebi will take huge damage from Fire Blast. More frail Pokemon will have a hard time trying to deal with this Slowbro variant thanks to its amalgam of bulk and power, while defensive Pokemon are crippled with Trick.

Surf is easily Slowbro's best form of STAB, providing nice neutral coverage; Water is a fantastic offensive typing in the OU tier, as the only Pokemon commonly found there that resist it are other bulky Water-type Pokemon such as Gyarados and Vaporeon, Dragon-type Pokemon such as Salamence and Latias, and Grass-type Pokemon such as Celebi and Roserade. Psychic gives Slowbro a nice way of hitting opposing Water-type Pokemon harder than with Surf. Trick is great on Slowbro, as it allows it to cripple any defensive Pokemon, like Blissey, that may be switching in on it attempting to wall its attacks. I`n the final slot, there are two viable options. Fire Blast is the better choice as it allows Slowbro to handle Steel-type Pokemon that attempt to switch in on it, as well as Celebi. Ice Beam can also be used to get past Celebi and Latias. Slack Off is a viable alternative if your team already has a powerful user of Fire-type moves, however, such as Life Orb Heatran.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Good teammates for this set are Pokemon who can take advantage of the massive holes that Slowbro opens up in the opposing team. Dragon Dance Salamence is a good choice for this role, as it resists Grass-type attacks and takes neutral damage from Electric-type attacks. Dragon Dance Salamence can easily sweep an opposing team once its physical walls have been weakened. Swords Dance Lucario and Dragon Dance Gyaradaos are in a similar boat, although Gyarados shares Slowbro's Electric-type weakness. Slowbro needs Stealth Rock to be most effective, as it secures some OHKOes and 2HKOes that would otherwise be impossible. Swampert is a good choice for this role, as it is immune to Electric-type attacks. It does, unfortunately, share Slowbro's Grass-type weakness, but Grass-type moves are rarely seen in the OU environment, barring Grass Knot.

Here are some damage calculations to demonstrate how powerful this set is:

Damage Calculations

Surf vs. 248 HP Scizor: 75 - 88%

Surf vs. 4 HP Tyranitar: 83 - 98%

Surf vs. 160 HP Tyranitar: 75 - 88%

Surf vs. 252 HP Tyranitar: 70 - 83%

Fire Blast vs. 252 HP Metagross: 100%

Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Celebi: 89 - 100%

Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 92 SpD Bronzong: 78% - 92%

Psychic vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Gyarados: 61% - 72%

Psychic vs. 188 HP / 0 SpD Vaporeon: 47% - 56%

[Team Options]

Slowbro struggles with Scizor and Tyranitar, who both have access to powerful super effective STAB moves that dent Slowbro severely. For this reason, Heatran can make a great partner, as it can not only force out Scizor with the prospect of a STAB Fire Blast, but can also take Dark- and Bug-type attacks that will be commonly aimed at Slowbro very well. Heatran cannot deal with Tyranitar, however; in order to check Tyranitar, Bulk Up Machamp can be a great teammate for Slowbro. Not only is Bulk Up Machamp a great Tyranitar counter, but it can also easily set up on confused foes and then proceed to break through the opposing team. Swords Dance Lucario is in a similar boat, as it can check Tyranitar very well, and really benefits from having the opponent's Salamence or Gyarados taken out of the match. Slowbro likes being partnered up with powerful Fighting-type Pokemon, as they can easily take care of Tyranitar and, to an extent, Scizor. Mixed Infernape is another great partner for Slowbro, easily capable of taking out the aforementioned threats.

As physically bulky as Slowbro is, the same does not hold true on the special side. Slowbro is by no means frail, but it won't enjoy repeated Thunderbolts and Hidden Power Electrics from Starmie and Vaporeon. For this reason, any variant of Latias makes a wonderful partner. Latias can easily take these attacks and proceed to set up Calm Minds, or just spam Life Orb boosted Draco Meteors. Latias does share Slowbro's unfortunate Pursuit weakness though, so beware. On stall teams, Blissey makes a great partner for Slowbro, capable of walling any and all special attacks that may harm it. Slowbro can also easily take Blissey's only weakness, Fighting-type attacks. While Slowbro is bulky to begin with, with it has dual screen support its defenses enter a whole new world. Bronzong stands out as a partner since it can easily deal with Tyranitar thanks to Gyro Ball and its Psychic / Steel typing, which makes it neutral to Dark-type attacks and resistant to Rock-type attacks.

[Optional Changes]

All of Slowbro's more effective options for use in the OU environment have already been discussed. Psychic can be used to hit Machamp harder, but even with a STAB boost and factoring in the super effective hit, Slowbro can still only 2HKO standard 252 HP / 0 SpD Machamp. Slowbro does have access to Light Screen, which can be useful in certain situations if you are aiming for Slowbro to perform more of a support role on your team. It is generally outclassed by Bronzong and Cresselia, however, as far as setting up Light Screen goes. Slowbro can also use Grass Knot as a more powerful means of hitting fellow Water-type Pokemon than Hidden Power Electric, but Slowbro generally has more productive things to do with its precious moveslots. Slowbro also has access to Flamethrower and Fire Blast. While these moves can be useful for hitting Scizor switch-ins for a OHKO, they warrant little use outside of that. Scizor can outspeed and deal ridiculous damage to Slowbro with a STAB boosted Choice Band U-turn as it is, so Flamethrower and Fire Blast are really only useful if you are positive your opponent is switching in Scizor. Should it not be the metal bug, your opponent will have gotten a new Pokemon in practically for free, while Slowbro will have wasted one of its moveslots.

Calm Mind Slowbro can also be used effectively in OU after Scizor and Tyranitar are taken out by teammates like Bait Latias and Bait Tyranitar. Calm Mind Slowbro is somewhat outclassed by Latias, but the fact that Slowbro is much more physically bulky and has two powerful STAB attacks to work with does somewhat help its case. Slowbro is also a great user of Trick Room, as it is one of the slowest Pokemon in the entire game. A simple 252 HP / 252 SpA spread can work wonders on a Trick Room team, as Slowbro's dual STAB combination and decent Special Attack stat can tear through weakened teams. Slowbro is a great support Pokemon in general, and while other Pokemon may have a wider movepool, Slowbro's bulk and access to Slack Off allow it to fulfill a valuable niche on almost any kind of team; moves like Trick, Yawn, and Counter set Slowbro apart from fellow bulky Water-type Pokemon like Vaporeon and Suicune. This is important, as when you are playing with Slowbro in OU, you should try and make sure you're using it in a role where it cannot be "outclassed".

A simple 252 HP / 252 Def EV spread will generally be best, as it maximizes Slowbro's physical bulk; OU is a tier crammed with powerful physical sweepers, and Slowbro needs all of the bulk that it can muster to stand up to these giants. Maximum defense allows Slowbro to survive a +1 Dragon Dance Salamence's Life Orb Outrage after Stealth Rock damage (to give you an idea of how bulky it truly is). On the Choice Specs set, an EV spread of 252 HP / 252 SpA will generally be the best, as it allows Slowbro to balance bulk and power. It will not be able to take as many hits as it would with 252 EVs in Defense, however; while it is by no means frail when lacking defense EVs, it isn't as bulky as it was, and can no longer survive a Swords Dance Lucario's +2 Life Orb Crunch (among other attacks).

[Counters]

As mentioned a few times in the analysis, Tyranitar and Scizor are very problematic for Slowbro to handle. Slowbro, while very bulky, simply cannot stand up to repeated Crunches and U-turns from these Pokemon. Basically, any Pursuit user will give Slowbro a rough time, as they can scare Slowbro away with their STAB attacks and proceed to take out the fleeing Slowbro with Pursuit. Weavile is a major pain for the Choice Specs set, as it can switch in on an expected Psychic and simply Pursuit away as Slowbro has no choice but to switch. Weavile can switch in on Slowbro, but it will lose a large chunk of health in the process due to its frailness and Stealth Rock weakness. Blissey can put a full stop to Slowbro's plans with ease thanks to her absurd Special Defense and HP stats, but she will not enjoy being hit with Trick from the Choice Specs set. Slowbro, as bulky as it is, will not be able to take multiple neutral hits. Slowbro's typing somewhat limits its defensive capabilities, as it leaves it weak to Grass-, Dark-, Bug-, Electric-, and Ghost-type attacks. These attacking types are relatively common in the OU tier, and the fact that most Grass-, Ghost-, and Electric-type attacks are special attacks doesn't help at all. Gengar and Jolteon are big pains for Slowbro, as while they cannot switch in on it, they can certainly come in after a teammate faints; from there, they simply have to spam their STAB move for a clean OHKO on Slowbro.

Slowbro can't counter Mence at all. 49% - 57.9% is what a +0 lo Outrage from DD Mence does to it. Draco Meteor also completely destroys Slowbro. It's not near perfect counter at all unless I'm missing something...

It's not a near perfect counter true, but it can survive any of Salamence attacks (even +1 Outrages) and then definitely OHKO back with Ice Beam. Not by any means a perfect counter, but for a dangerous and powerful Pokemon like Salamence a very good counter.

I can hardly call Slowbro Lucario counter. It barely survives +2 Crunch from SDLuke, so to be honest I wouldn't use Slowbro as Lucario counter (and he needs Fire Blast for certain OHKO, otherwise Slowbro can't OHKO Lucario back when it easily finish you off). With Salamence it looks smilar. However Slowbro is bulky enough to check Flygon and Metagross and I would add to Machamp mention that Slowbro can't be 2OHKOed even by CB Thunderpunch. Also SD Infernape and physically based mix doesn't stand a chance.

And I heart of people using CM Slowbro with good effect in OU, when TTar and Scizor are gone (baits :P), so I think it's worth to mention it at least in other options.

I wouldn't call Slowbro a Machamp "check". He's a full-blown counter for Machamp, and is one of the few pokemon that can actually boast that (I'd say Dusknoir and maybe Spiritomb are the only other ones). I mean, he not only resists Dynamicpunch, but takes no confusion from it. Payback is also a mere 100 base power against it after super-effective damage since Slowbro is slower than Machamp. The only thing Machamp can do is use Thunderpunch, which is a complete waste of a slot and only does 31% - 36.5% to Slowbro anyway.

Also, no mention of Trick Room at all in Other Options?

[SET COMMENTS]

Slowbro is often seen as the best bulky Water-type Pokemon of the UU tier. While this statement isn't far from the truth, [Milotic, Azumarill are competition with Slowbro in UU, and I wouldn't say he's the best bulky water] While Slowbro is often seen in the UU tier, it can also be used to great effect in the OU environment. Slowbro possesses the nice ability to almost perfectly counter the most dangerous offensive threats including Salamence, Gyarados, Machamp and to an extent, Lucario. This is no easy feat, as these three sweepers are some of the most dangerous and common Pokemon in the OU metagame. [this portion is merged with the previous sentence to remove fluff] Aside from checking these Pokemon, however, Slowbro also fares well against other common physical sweepers in OU, barring Tyranitar and Scizor. Slowbro is also notable as a near-perfect check to the ever irritating Machamp, thanks to its ability Own Tempo to prevent confusion. Slowbro's decent base 100 Special Attack stat means that it can also dish out a hit if necessary, as STAB Surf does more than one might expect considering there is no EV investment in Slowbro's Special Attack still hurts even with limited EV investment into Special Attack. While it may seem that Suicune performs this role better, Slowbro possesses one important trait that sets it apart from Suicune; has a reliable recovery move in the form of Slack Off compared to Suicune. Slack Off allows Slowbro to freely recover off damage whenever necessary, and a 50% recovery move on such a defensive Pokemon is much appreciated. Suicune has to rely on the shaky Rest and Sleep Talk combination for recovery, and an unlucky turn of Sleep Talking could be fatal.

Slack Off, as previously mentioned, is a huge asset on Slowbro, and sets it apart from other bulky Water-type Pokemon littered around the OU tier. Surf gives Slowbro a reliable form of STAB to work with, and can deal more damage than one might expect; for instance, Surf does about 30% damage to standard Swampert, as well as dealing 41.3% to 48.8% damage to physically defensive Skarmory (which is enough to usually get a solid 2HKO with Stealth Rock support). [I think this is a bad example since Surf doesn't even secure it a 2HKO and Skarmory can easily Roost off the hit, while alternating between Spikes and Roost] In the second slot, the move that you use is entirely up to what Pokemon your team needs Slowbro to check. If your team struggles in countering Dragon Dance Salamence and MixMence,[Draco Meteor = 86% - 101.3%] then Ice Beam is the preferred move. If, however, your team is weak to Dragon Dance Gyarados, then Hidden Power Electric is the suitable choice. Ice Beam will always OHKO standard Salamence even without Stealth Rock support, while Hidden Power Electric is a guaranteed 2HKO on Gyarados. The fact that Slowbro fails to OHKO is of little concern, as bulky Gyarados can do little to harm Slowbro in the meantime, aside from possibly Taunting it should Gyarados be a bulkier variant. In the final slot, two moves can be used. Thunder Wave is a nice choice if your team uses slower, more powerful sweepers such as Bulk Up Machamp. Toxic on the other hand, is more useful for stall-based teams, as Toxic Slowbro can easily stall out many of the OU tier's top physical forces with Slack Off.

Slowbro is generally better off used on more defensively-oriented or stall-based teams, as its natural physical bulk and access to instant recovery tend to draw out matches to make for a slower game, but that isn't to say that Slowbro can't be used on offensive teams. Slowbro makes a great partner for Pokemon that enjoy having the opponent's set-up sweepers taken out of the game. This includes Choiced item-wielding Pokemon such as Choice Specs Latias and Choice Band Metagross, as while the extra power from these Choice-boosted attacks is nice, predicting incorrectly can lead to some sticky situations (such as if Dragon Dance Gyarados or Salamence switches in on Metagross's Choice-locked Earthquake). but the possibility of geting locked in can often lead to sticky situations.

Scizor and Tyranitar, two of the OU tier's most common Pokemon, are a huge threat to Slowbro. These Pokemon can switch in rather easily on any of Slowbro's attacks (but Dragon Dance variants of Tyranitar won't enjoy a paralysis from Thunder Wave). They can then proceed to severely dent Slowbro with their STAB U-turns and Crunches. MysicGAR Protect Gengar is a nice way of dealing with Scizor, and if you can manage to squeeze Focus Blast onto Gengar's set, then Gengar can easily check these two Pokemon. While Slowbro's Psychic-type does help it in sometimes help by taking Lucario's Swords Dance boosted unboosted Close Combats [+2 Close Combat 42.4% - 50%, and Crunch deals 70-80], it is more of a hinderance than a help, as it leaves Slowbro with a very undesirable Pursuit weakness. While Slowbro's impressive HP and Defense stats physical bulk compensate for this somewhat, it is still a rather obnoxious move to have to deal with in a tier so crammed with powerful Pursuit users. Lucario for this reason makes a nice partner, as it can easily come in on a Choice-locked Pursuit from the likes of Scizor, Weavile, and Tyranitar, and then proceed to set up a Swords Dance and significantly damage the opposing team. Slowbro can be a major help if used with proper team support, and as such try and surround the pink Pokemon with teammates who can take advantage of Slowbro's traits, both positive and negative ones. [I think this would fit in on Team Options section, or even Opinions]

---

Yeah that took a while, but good job. I just did the first set. I think you have a lot of run-on sentences and I fixed that a bit. There are a lot of loose information as well, but you should look it over and tell me if I did anything wrong.

As for da set itself, you should defenitely add a section in the Team Options on how to deal with some prominent special attackers. I'm talking about Starmie and Jolteon mainly since they won't mind Thunder Wave, while they can dish out damage in return with Thunderbolt. Latias to a lesser extent can make a free entrance on Surf and take little damage from Ice Beam. Blissey is one partner for this and they can trade off weaknesses. overall gj on this, will try to edit some things that stood out.

Slowbro can't counter Mence at all. 49% - 57.9% is what a +0 lo Outrage from DD Mence does to it. Draco Meteor also completely destroys Slowbro. It's not near perfect counter at all unless I'm missing something...
You could say the same thing about Suicune and Celebi; both take the same, if not more damage from an Outrage. There is no real Salamence counter to begin with, or at least from that statistical point of view, and considering Slowbro can survive all of Salamence's +1 attacks with Stealth Rock down and has the ability to OHKO back with Ice Beam makes it a pretty nice check to DD mence.

edit: whoops I did not see that snorlaxe had responded to that already

Since you are mentioning Lucario in Team Options, perhaps you should mention that Lucario also benefits from the Paralysis support that Slowbro gives. A Fire move (Fire Blast/Flamethrower) should probably be mentioned in set comments, considering Scizor is an easy switchin otherwise, and it helps Slowbro to "counter" Lucario.

Also maybe add 12 EVs to Speed if you're running Thunder Wave. They alow Slowbro to outrun base 130's and below after paralysis. Obviously not Jolteon unless you have like Body Slam Jirachi supporting Slowbro... but I guess it's just food for thought?

slowbro doesn't have access to reflect

I'll edit this with more detailed comments on the set after you update with franky's edits.

Nitpick for now, I'll edit more later.

I'd advise changing the title of the set to something like Countering Utility (OU), a la the Arceus page, because Anti-sweeper sounds a bit colloquial. Ultimately, title decisions are the discretion of the writer, but just a thought.

Alternatively, you could just have it labeled "Bulky Water" like the UU set or "Physical Wall". Also:

Slowbro possesses the nice ability to easily counter Salamence, Gyarados, and to an extent, Lucario.

You might want to write check there instead.

I would definately add Fire Blast or Flamethrower (probably Fire Blast), since some of Slowbro's switch ins definately do not appreciate Fire Blast. Scizor is obviously OHKOed, but it also 2HKOs Metagross, Slowbro also can put a stop to the ever irritating Jirachi, and lets not forget Fire Blast will do 51% minimum to Specially Defensive Skarm, which is a nightmare to the kind of teams this Slowbro will be used on! I wouldn't worry so much about Gyarados with HP Electric, as non-Taunt Gyarados's are nerfed by T-Wave, and Taunt Gyarados' are bulky and will take a while to actually beat Slowbro (especially if you are chipping away with Ice Beam).

Okay, due to "popular demand" I'll test Fire Blast more thoroughly later today and then see if it deserves a spot in the main analysis. Also, thanks for catching that Whistle, I could have sworn Slowbro got Reflect...? :O

Slack Off, as previously mentioned, is a huge asset on Slowbro, and sets it apart from other bulky Water-type Pokemon littered around the OU tier. MixMence's Draco Meteor deals 86% - 101.3% to Slowbro. Slowbro is, in no way, a MixMence counter. Slowbro shouldn't even be coming in after MixMence nets a kill if SR is in play.

Slowbro possesses the nice ability to easily counter Salamence, Gyarados, and to an extent, Lucario.
Agreeing with supermarth64, this statement isn't true. +2 Lucario 2HKOs with Crunch; Slowbro can only counter Lucario without Crunch. Slowbro can't counter MixMence, and it can't switch into a Salamence Outrage. It can only switch into a Mence as it DDs; it only checks DDMence (though theoretically speaking, most people use checks to handle Mence).

Also, in the first paragraph

Slowbro is often seen as the best bulky Water-type Pokemon of the UU tier. While this statement isn't far from the truth, Slowbro can also be used to great effect in the OU environment. Slowbro is also notable as a perfect counter to the ever irritating Machamp, as well as physically based Infernape sets, Metagross, and Flygon.
You should say that Slowbro is a perfect counter to Machamp because Own Tempo means DynamicPunch will not cause confusion against it, and Slowbro is only hit for 50 base power by Payback against Machamp (assuming it is not hit in on the switch). There should be more emphasis on the fact that Slowbro counters Machamp, as no other Pokemon can counter Machamp as well as Slowbro. As for Infernape and Flygon, you should give some warning to the fact that they can both use U-turn to switch out to a Slowbro counter and hit Slowbro super-effectively. Metagross can also explode on Slowbro for a OHKO or use Thunder Punch.

Okay, I'll edit in those fixed Darkmalice. I also edited in franky's suggestions (well most of them) and am writing the team options as we speak.

EDIT: Done with team options! :]

Metagross can also explode on Slowbro for a OHKO or use Thunder Punch.
A pokemon is by definition a counter if the pokemon its countering must Explode to beat it. And Thunderpunch will need a Choice Band to scratch Slowbro.

Also, I'm wondering why this is the only set with an OU mention. Choice Specs Slowbro actually hits like a Mack Truck, has Trick, and gets excellent coverage with Surf / Psychic / Fire Blast, only being resisted by Starmie.

Hi, I'd just like to point out a small error in your analysis, when you use the words "super effective" you don't use a hyphen in between words.

After testing the Choice Specs set RaikouLover I have reached a sort of dilemma. It is a great set and works very well, but there is already a Specs set in the analysis. I'm thinking I'll just edit in some comments about OU Choice Specs Slowbro in the current one. Is that alright with everyone, or should I do something different?

Also thanks September :]

When these analyses go into tabs (eventually), the individual metagame analyses will be moved to the appropriate tab. Therefore, new set comments will be needed.

In other words write a set for it.

Also, link the analysis page in the OP.

since there's lots of changes here, there's a “finished” version as well as a version that details the changes I made. this way you can pick which ones you want to pick and which ones you don't like!

I concised stuff but also added information when I felt it was necessary.

[SET COMMENTS]

While Slowbro is usually only seen in the UU tier, it can also be used to great effect in the OU environment to check some of its most dangerous Pokemon. Slowbro counters Dragon Dance Salamence and Gyarados, but also fares well against other common sweepers such as physical Infernape, Metagross, and Flygon. It is also notable as a perfect counter to Machamp, thanks to Own Tempo (which prevents confusion), a resistance to DynamicPunch, and its low base Speed (which ensures it never takes double damage from Payback). Slowbro is particularly great at taking neutral unboosted Physical attacks, as most do not even 2HKO and Slowbro can slowly bring the opposing Pokemon to the ground with a combination of Surf / Toxic and Slack Off. Slowbro faces competition for a team slot from Suicune and Vaporeon, but has distinct advantages over both. Suicune must use the unreliable Rest and Sleep Talk combination for recovery, while Slowbro has access to Slack Off. On the other hand, Slowbro's ability to use Thunder Wave to stop sweepers that it can't hit effectively sets it apart from Vaporeon. Its Psychic sub-typing also lets it counter Fighting-types more effectively than either Suicune or Vaporeon.

Slack Off is a huge asset on Slowbro, and sets it apart from other bulky Waters in the OU tier. Surf gives Slowbro a reliable STAB to work with. In the third slot, the move that you use is entirely up to what Pokemon your team needs Slowbro to check. Ice Beam can OHKO Salamence (even without Stealth Rock), while Hidden Power Electric is a guaranteed 2HKO on Gyarados (which struggles to 2HKO in return, even with a +1 Adamant Life Orb Bounce). In the final slot, two moves can be used. Thunder Wave is a nice choice to provide paralysis support for slower sweepers like Bulk Up Machamp. Toxic, on the other hand, is more useful for stall-based teams, as Toxic Slowbro can stall out many of the OU tier's top physical forces with Slack Off.

This includes Choice item wielding Pokemon such as Choice Specs Latias and Choice Band Metagross, as predicting incorrectly can lead to some sticky situations (such as if Dragon Dance Gyarados or Salamence switches in on Metagross's Choice-locked Earthquake).

They can then proceed to severely dent Slowbro with their STAB U-turns and Crunches, respectively. Machamp is a nearly surefire Tyranitar counter and benefits greatly from Slowbro's paralysis support. Protect Gengar with Hidden Power Fire and Focus Blast can lure and kill both Scizor and Tyranitar. Lucario makes a good partner due to Slowbro's Pursuit weakness, as it can easily come in on a Choice-locked Pursuit from the likes of Scizor, Weavile, and Tyranitar, and proceed to set up a Swords Dance.

[Other Options]

Psychic can be used to hit Machamp harder, but Slowbro can only 2HKO standard 252 HP / 0 SpD Machamp. Slowbro does have access to Light Screen, but has a hard time fitting it onto a moveset (dedicated screeners such as Bronzong and Cresselia generally do a much better job). Slowbro can also use Grass Knot to hit Suicune and Swampert harder than Hidden Power Electric, but Slowbro generally has more productive things to do with its precious moveslots. Slowbro also has access to Flamethrower and Fire Blast. While these can be useful for OHKOing Scizor switch-ins, you must predict the switch (since Scizor outpaces Slowbro and will almost always U-turn). If you predict incorrectly, your opponent will get a nearly free switch. However, it is worth noting that if Slowbro Thunder Waves Scizor on the switch, it can strike before Scizor has an opportunity to U-turn.

Calm Mind Slowbro can also be used effectively in OU after Scizor and Tyranitar are taken out by teammates like Bait Latias and Bait Tyranitar. Calm Mind Slowbro is somewhat outclassed by Latias, but the fact that Slowbro is much more physically bulky does help its case. Slowbro is also a great user of Trick Room, as it is one of the slowest Pokemon in the entire game; however, Slowking's access to Nasty Plot generally makes it a better offensive supporter. Slowbro is a great support Pokemon in general, and while other Pokemon may have a wider movepool,

[Team Options]

Slowbro struggles with Scizor and Tyranitar, who both have access to powerful super-effective STAB moves. Heatran can make a great partner, as it easily OHKOs Scizor and can take Dark- and Bug-type attacks aimed at Slowbro; unfortunately, it has trouble with any Tyranitar not locked into Crunch. Bulk Up Machamp makes a great teammate, not only because it counters nearly every Tyranitar set, but also because Slowbro's paralysis support helps it sweep. Swords Dance Lucario is in a similar boat, as it can check Tyranitar very well and really benefits from having the opponent's Salamence or Gyarados taken out of the match. Mixed Infernape is another great partner for Slowbro, since it is capable of easily taking out the aforementioned threats.

As physically bulky as Slowbro is, the same does not hold true on the special side. Slowbro is by no means frail, but it won't enjoy repeated Thunderbolts from the likes of Life Orb Starmie and Hidden Power Electrics from Vaporeon. For this reason, any variant of Latias makes a wonderful partner. Latias can easily take these attacks and proceed to set up Calm Minds in the face of these Pokemon, or just spam Life Orb boosted Draco Meteors. Latias does share Slowbro's unfortunate Pursuit weakness, so beware. On stall teams Blissey makes a great partner for Slowbro, capable of walling nearly every special attack. In return, Slowbro easily switches into Fighting-type attacks for Blissey. While Slowbro is bulky to begin with, if it has dual screen support its defenses enter a whole new world. Bronzong stands out as a partner since it can easily deal with Tyranitar thanks to Gyro Ball and its Psychic / Steel typing (making it neutral to Dark-type attacks and resistant to Rock-type attacks).

It is also notable as a perfect counter to the ever irritating Machamp(,) (()(()thanks to Own Tempo (()which prevents confusion()), a resistance to DynamicPunch, and its low base Speed (which ensures it never takes double damage from Payback)()), as well as physically based Infernape sets, Metagross, and Flygon. Slowbro's decent base 100 Special Attack stat means that it can also dish out a hit if necessary, as an STAB Surf does more than one might expect considering there is no EV investment in Slowbro's Special Attack. While it may seem that Suicune performs this role better, Slowbro possesses one important trait that sets it apart from Suicune; Slack Off. Slowbro faces competition for a team slot from Suicune and Vaporeon, but has distinct advantages over both. Surf gives Slowbro a reliable form of STAB to work with, and can deal more damage than one might expect; for instance, Surf does about 30% damage to standard Swampert. In the third slot, the move that you use is entirely up to what Pokemon your team needs Slowbro to check. If your team struggles in countering Dragon Dance Salamence, then Ice Beam is the preferred move. If, however, your team is weak to Dragon Dance Gyarados, then Hidden Power Electric is the better choice. Ice Beam will always OHKO standard Salamence even without Stealth Rock support, while Hidden Power Electric is a guaranteed 2HKO on Gyarados. The fact that Slowbro fails to OHKO is of little concern, as Gyarados can do little to harm Slowbro, aside from possibly Taunting it should Gyarados be a bulkier variant. Thunder Wave is a nice choice if your team uses slower, more powerful sweepers such as to provide paralysis support for slower sweepers like Bulk Up Machamp. Toxic, on the other hand, is more useful for stall-based teams, as Toxic Slowbro can stall out many of the OU tier's top physical forces with Slack Off.

While Slowbro's Psychic-type does help it sponge Lucario's Swords Dance boosted Close Combats, it is more of a hinderance than a help, as it leaves Slowbro with a very undesirable Pursuit weakness. While Slowbro's impressive physical bulk does help compensate for this somewhat, it is still a rather obnoxious thing to have to deal with in a tier so crammed with powerful Pursuit users. Lucario makes a good partner due to Slowbro's Pursuit weakness, for this reason makes a nice partner, as it can easily come in on a Choice-locked Pursuit from the likes of Scizor, Weavile, and Tyranitar, and then proceed to set up a Swords Dance and significantly damage the opposing team with a boosted Close Combat.

[Other Options]

All of Slowbro's more effective options for use in the OU environment have already been discussed. Psychic can be used to hit Machamp harder, but even with an STAB boost and factoring in the super-effective hit, Slowbro can still only 2HKO standard 252 HP / 0 SpD Machamp. Slowbro does have access to Light Screen, which can be useful in certain situations if you are aiming for Slowbro to perform more of a support role on your team. It is generally outclassed by Bronzong and Cresselia, however, as far as setting up Light Screen goes but has a hard time fitting it onto a moveset (dedicated screeners such as Bronzong and Cresselia generally do a much better job). Slowbro can also use Grass Knot as a more powerful means of hitting fellow Water-type Pokemon to hit Suicune and Swampert harder than Hidden Power Electric, but Slowbro generally has more productive things to do with its precious moveslots. Slowbro also (somehow) has access to Flamethrower and Fire Blast. While these moves can be useful for hitting Scizor switchins for a OHKOing Scizor switch-ins, they warrant little use outside of that. Scizor can outspeed and deal ridiculous damage to Slowbro with an STAB boosted Choice Band U-turn as it is, so Flamethrower and Fire Blast are really only useful if you are 100% positive your opponent is switching in Scizor. Should it not be the metal bug, your opponent will have gotten a new Pokemon in practically for free, while Slowbro will have wasted one of its moveslots. you must predict the switch (since Scizor outpaces Slowbro and will almost always U-turn).

Calm Mind Slowbro is somewhat outclassed by Latias, but the fact that Slowbro is much more physically bulky and has two powerful STAB attacks to work with does somewhat help its case. Slowbro is also a great user of Trick Room, as it is one of the slowest Pokemon in the entire game; however, Slowking's access to Nasty Plot generally makes it a better offensive supporter. This is important, as when you are playing with Slowbro in OU, you should try and make sure you're using it in a role where it cannot be "outclassed". put that in opinion

[Team Options]

Slowbro struggles with Scizor and Tyranitar, who both have access to powerful super-effective STAB moves that dent Slowbro severely. For this reason, Heatran can make a great partner, as it can not only force out Scizor with the prospect of an STAB Fire Blast but can also take Dark- and Bug-type attacks that will be commonly aimed at Slowbro very well; Heatran cannot, however, deal with Tyranitar easily OHKOs Scizor and can take Dark- and Bug-type attacks aimed at Slowbro; unfortunately, it has trouble with any Tyranitar not locked into Crunch. In order to check Tyranitar, Bulk Up Machamp can be a great teammate for Slowbro. Not only is Bulk Up Machamp a great Tyranitar counter, but it can also easily set up on confused foes and then proceed to break through the opposing team. Bulk Up Machamp makes a great teammate, not only because it counters nearly every Tyranitar set, but also because Slowbro's paralysis support helps it sweep.Swords Dance Lucario is in a similar boat, as it can check Tyranitar very well and really benefits from having the opponent's Salamence or Gyarados taken out of the match. Slowbro likes being partnered up with powerful Fighting-type Pokemon, as they can easily take care of Tyranitar and, to an extent, Scizor. Mixed Infernape is another great partner for Slowbro, since it is easily capable of easily taking out the aforementioned threats.

Not at all, that would be fantastic whistle :]

EDIT: I will write a set for Choice Specs, but probably by Saturday at the earliest as I am very busy both irl and on Smogon right now; I have to write the Honchkrow update, the Camerupt update, I'm colaberating on the Drifblim revamp, I have to write the Weezing OU Analysis, and I might be tutoring in the Team Rating Workshop.

EDIT 2: Thank you so so much whistle!

Apologies for double posting, but editing three times is a bit much :/

I have decided to write the Specs in OU set, but I'm not entirely sure of which moveset to use. The set you see in the OP is the Specs variant I've been running, but I want some opinions on what to use. Thanks guys! :]

[SET]
name: Choice Specs (OU)
move 1: Surf
move 2: Psychic
move 3: Trick
move 4: Fire Blast / Slack Off
item: Choice Specs
ability: Own Tempo
nature: Modest
evs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 Def
Specs Slowbro is an absolute monster. Since Surf + Psychic hits everything in OU except Starmie, Empoleon, and Celebi for neutral damage, your 3rd attack actually isn't necessary. Trick is a must. Slack Off is very useful on switches, and if you have Tricked your Specs onto Blissey. Fire Blast is the best last attack. Good coverage with both Surf and Psychic individually, amazing base power, and peep the damage calcs:

Surf vs. 248 HP Scizor: 75-88%
Surf vs. 4 HP Tyranitar: 83-98%
Surf vs. 160 HP Tyranitar:75-88%
Surf vs. 252 HP Tyranitar: 70-83%
Fire Blast vs. 252 HP Metagross: 100%
Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Celebi: 89-100% <--- Winner!!!!

Okay, since your a decent counter to Metagross, you should be able to knock it out in a pinch, which Fire Blast can do. Also, the OHKO on Celebi is HUGE! Surf OHKOs Scizor after two SR's guarenteed, but if its early Fire Blasting ahead is a good idea! As for Mr. All Tough Tyranitar, Surf does fatal damage to most sets. Remember to mention in the set comments not to use intricate prediction. Surf is definately the safest move under any circumstances, as not even Gyarados will appreciate being 3HKOed by it (while struggling to retailiate), and because most Pursuiters are just taking a shitload from it. Psychic is for clearing waters out of the way in the lategame.

Grass Knot could get a tiny mention in set comments, but it will only hit Starmie and Suicune harder than your other moves. Vaporeon and Gyarados take more from STAB Psychic, and most bulkier things that can survive these onslaughts wont appreciate a Trick.
