Slowking

Status
Not open for further replies.

[OVERVIEW]

Despite being slightly overshadowed by Slowbro, Slowking holds its own by being able to check powerful special attackers that Slowbro cannot, as well as reliably countering Grass Knot Mega Metagross. Its decent defensive typing also allows it to switch into many other Pokemon such as Keldeo and Latios with ease, making it a very good blanket check to special attackers in general. Slowking's ability, Regenerator, allows it to pivot into powerful attackers throughout the match and, along with reliable recovery in Slack Off, makes it very hard to take down. Slowking has a good movepool as well, with coverage options such as Fire Blast to hit foes such as Bisharp and Mega Metagross and, unlike Slowbro, has a utility move in Dragon Tail, allowing Slowking to phaze problematic Calm Mind users such as Mega Latias and Reuniclus. However, Slowking's typing leaves it weak to common moves such as Knock Off, Pursuit, U-turn and Volt Switch. Slowking also has lower physical bulk than its counterpart, so it is even more vulnerable to being trapped by Pursuit and is vulnerable to physical attackers in general. It does not help that Slowking is horrendously slow, forcing it to take two hits as switches into attacks before making a move itself.

Moves
========

Scald is Slowking's most reliable Water-type STAB move, and its chance to burn the foe discourages Pokemon such as Azumarill from switching in. Psychic is a secondary STAB move that allows Slowking to hit Keldeo, Mega Venusaur, and Rotom-W for decent damage. Future Sight is an alternative to pressure the opponent into switching and forcing some checkmate scenarios such as preventing Keldeo from switching in on Heatran, allowing it to safely set up Stealth Rock. Fire Blast hits switch-ins to Slowking such as Scizor, Bisharp, Serperior, and Ferrothorn. Ice Beam mainly targets Dragon-types such as Latios, Mega Altaria, and Dragonite, which otherwise take little damage from Slowking's attacks. Dragon Tail is an alternative to phaze Calm Mind users such as Reuniclus, Suicune, and Mega Latias and phaze a Quiver Dance-boosted Volcarona in a pinch.

Set Details
========

Maximum Special Attack EVs with a Modest nature allow Slowking to always OHKO Mega Diancie with Scald and OHKO defensive Garchomp most of the time with Ice Beam. 248 HP EVs are used to maximize Slowking's bulk while minimizing Stealth Rock damage. 136 Special Defense EVs are another option to take on special attackers such as Mega Alakazam and Mega Charizard Y much more easily. Regenerator allows Slowking to recover some of its HP as it pivots in and out into attacks, giving it good longevity. Assault Vest enables Slowking to sponge special attacks with ease and works well in tandem with Regenerator.

Usage Tips
========

This set is to be played more like a bulky pivot that is able to dish out decent damage back, so make sure to switch often to keep Slowking healthy via Regenerator. Try to avoid Knock Off at all costs, as it deals heavy damage to Slowking and significantly lowers its special bulk due to its Assault Vest being removed. Make sure to be careful when switching around when the opponent has Pokemon that can use Pursuit, and try to use the appropriate coverage move against whatever Pokemon Slowking has switched into. If using Future Sight, it is best to use the move as soon as Slowking is brought out to prevent Pokemon such as Keldeo from switching in on another teammate. If Slowking is carrying Dragon Tail, switch into defensive Calm Mind users to phaze them.

Team Options
========

Generally , this set best fits on balance teams that are in need of a blanket check to many powerful special attackers such as Keldeo and Latios. Slowking pairs well with Grass-types such as Amoonguss and Mega Venusaur, as they cover Slowking's Electric weakness, while Slowking covers their Psychic weakness as well as the former's Ice- and Fire-type weaknesses in return. Amoonguss also forms a Regenerator core with Slowking, allowing both to pivot and recover HP throughout the match. Heatran is another decent partner, as it has good synergy with Slowking while having moves such as Toxic and Stealth Rock to wear down Pokemon that Slowking pivots into. Latios, Mega Altaria, and Mega Diancie pair well with Slowking because it is able to take on Mega Metagross, which is very problematic for all of them. Slowking is crippled by Knock Off as well as status effects such as poison and burn, so Pokemon such as Gliscor and Magic Guard Clefable make for great partners.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Scald is a decently powerful and reliable Water-type STAB move that can inflict burns, deterring physical attackers from switching in. Psyshock is used to 2HKO all variants of Keldeo and allows Slowking to hit other Pokemon weak to Psychic on the switch, such as Gengar and Breloom. Fire Blast is an alternative to 2HKO Ferrothorn, OHKO Scizor on the switch, and 2HKO Mega Metagross after Stealth Rock. Thunder Wave is used to cripple many fast Pokemon such as Keldeo, Mega Lopunny, Mega Metagross, and Latios. Toxic is used to wear down Pokemon that switch into Slowking, limiting their chances to do so. Dragon Tail is useful to enable Slowking to phaze many defensive Calm Mind users such as Reuniclus, Suicune, and Mega Slowbro; it can even phaze Tail Glow Manaphy and a Quiver Dance-boosted Volcarona in tight situations. Slack Off ensures Slowking stays healthy throughout the match. Ice Beam is another alternative to hit Pokemon such as Latios, Thundurus, and Gliscor while still having coverage for Grass-types.

Set Details
========

A Calm nature and the given EV spread lets Slowking avoid the 2HKO from Metagross's Meteor Mash after an Attack raise to ensure it reliably walls it, as well avoid the 2HKO from Mega Lopunny's Return without Stealth Rock on the field, while still having enough Special Defense to take on powerful special attackers such as Keldeo and Latios. The EV spread also lets Slowking avoid the 2HKO from neutral-natured Mega Diancie's Moonblast and Timid Mega Gardevoir's Hyper Voice, as well as enabling it to take a Life Orb-boosted Thunderbolt from Thundurus after Stealth Rock if needed. Regenerator allows Slowking to heal while pivoting in and out during the match. Leftovers is chosen for passive recovery, furthering Slowking's longevity.

Usage Tips
========

Use Slowking to pivot into special attackers such as Latios and Keldeo and apply immediate pressure by using the appropriate coverage move or by spreading around status. Pivot around often to restore HP via Regenerator, as Slowking is an excellent pivot against many Pokemon such as Grass Knot Mega Metagross. Use Slack Off to keep it healthy throughout the match so that it is able to consistently check the Pokemon it needs to. Slack Off should generally be used against Pokemon that cannot do much in return or when attempting to Toxic stall the foe. It is best to spread status on predicted switches to cripple the opponent's Pokemon. If Dragon Tail is being used, switch into defensive Calm Mind users such as Reuniclus and Suicune to stop them.

Team Options
========

Naturally, Slowking pairs very well with a Grass- and a Fire-type Pokemon, so Ferrothorn and Heatran form an excellent defensive core with Slowking. Amoonguss in particular pairs well with Slowking, as they have great synergy and form a Regenerator core, allowing both of them to pivot into each other's checks. Magic Guard Clefable is another good partner, as it absorbs status and Knock Off very well, while in return, Slowking is able to switch into Mega Metagross and Heatran. Similarly, Mega Altaria pairs well because it is able to take on Mega Charizard Y and Mega Charizard X, while Slowking is able to switch in on Mega Metagross and Heatran. Chesnaught is another Grass-type that pairs well with Slowking, as it covers problematic Pokemon to Slowking such as Bisharp and Tyranitar and has access to Spikes to wear down opposing Pokemon. Dragalge is able to switch in on Gengar and Mega Charizard Y while supporting Slowking with Toxic Spikes, allowing it to wear down its checks. Gliscor is another good partner for its ability to absorb status effects and Knock Off, while Slowking is able to switch in on Water- and Ice-type attacks that threaten Gliscor.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Slowking has an assortment of boosting moves to use. Calm Mind makes its Special Attack and Special Defense even higher, making it a decent bulky win condition, while Nasty Plot can allow Slowking to become an immediate threat, either with a three attacks or alongside Trick Room. Rocky Helmet can be used to wear down physical attackers, but Slowking really appreciates the passive recovery from Leftovers and usually takes on special attackers. Yawn has use as a pseudo-phazing move and can keep Clefable, which is immune to Dragon Tail, from from setting up Calm Mind against Slowking. Power Gem is an option to hit Pokemon such as Mega Charizard Y, Talonflame, and Volcarona harder than anything else. Foul Play is useful to punish physical setup sweepers that try to set up on Slowking.

Checks and Counters
=================

**Dark-types**: Dark-types such as Bisharp, Tyranitar, and Weavile all force Slowking out with their STAB moves and are all capable of trapping Slowking with Pursuit. However, none of these Pokemon appreciate Scald burns or being hit by Thunder Wave.

**Grass-types**: Grass-types, such as Serperior, Celebi, and Mega Sceptile, force out Slowking with their STAB moves, while Celebi is also able to set up on it and cures any status afflictions with Natural Cure.

**Electric-types**: Pokemon such as Thundurus, Mega Manectric, Raikou, and Magnezone all threaten Slowking with their STAB moves and are immune to Thunder Wave, but none of them like being burned by Scald.

**Status**: Status effects such as burn and poison greatly hamper Slowking's longevity, with Toxic in particular limiting how long Slowking is able to stay in.

**Pokemon with Magic Guard**: Pokemon such as Clefable and Reuniclus do not care about Scald burns or Toxic and can set up Calm Mind on Slowking easily. Clefable is also immune to Dragon Tail, meaning that Slowking cannot phaze it.

**Water-types**: Starmie and Azumarill are able to take any hit Slowking throws at them, but Scald's burn chance discourages Azumarill from switching in and offensive variants of Starmie are crippled Thunder Wave and Toxic. Mega Gyarados takes any hit Slowking throws at it while using Substitute freely to avoid status and setting up with Dragon Dance. Manaphy, particularly its Tail Glow Rain Dance set, also uses Slowking as setup bait, threatens it with Energy Ball, and heals off any status conditions with Hydration; however, Manaphy can be phazed if Slowking carries Dragon Tail.

**Scizor**: Both Scizor and Mega Scizor threaten Slowking with U-turn and are capable of using Pursuit, but neither appreciates getting burned by Scald or being hit by Fire Blast.

Will keep this a wip since there are some things that need some changes (it's pretty vague, inferior ev spread on the first set, etc.)

will get this ready for qc by tomorrow (unless the team wants me to push it to qc right now)

Yeah work on it first in regards to fixing spreads and whatever you feel is necessary / relevant and then you can push it to QC once you've settled on all of that Hootie.

I was making up spreads for AV Slowking and I've found that 248 HP / 200 Def / 36 Spa / 44 SpD with a Calm nature is the most effective spread for Assault Vest Slowking. The Defense EVs assure that you'll NEVER be 2HKOed by Mega Lopunny's Return. The Special defense EVs with Assault Vest let you avoid the 2HKO from Zard's Solar beam. The remaining Special Attack EVs let you 2HKO Metagross with Fire Blast which is handy considering you counter it.

I can find another spread for the defensive set l8r

been using slowking quite a bit recently and have been using this set specifically:

Slowking @ Leftovers
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 248 HP / 184 Def / 76 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Scald
- Slack Off
- Dragon Tail
- Thunder Wave

the moves are team specific, but what i wanted to touch on was the ev spread i use. i feel that EVs: 248 HP / 184 Def / 76+ SpD is probably one of the better spreads out there. it ensures that gross will never 2HKO you with a +1 meteor mash after rocks (gk does 38 max lol), which, imo, is really important because one of the main draws of using king over bro is flat out countering metagross (barring t punch ofc), and losing to it because it gets a lucky attack raise is kinda dumb when it can be avoided. it also avoids a 2HKO from mega lops return w/o rocks on the field. i also did some calcs vs a lot of special attackers, and its still able to check things like lando and latios, tho not /as/ reliably (in regards to lando, that is). qc can weigh in on this but i feel that it deserves a set details mention at the very least.

Currently I am trying to figure out a spread still so thanks for the suggestion. I'm only using the spread that was in the damage calc since it just so happens to take on Lando w/o knock off, and gard while still being able to take hits from mega meta. I will definitely consider the spread you have given since random meteor mash boosts suck, but I'd still would like some input from qc.

Remove Power Gem as the main move / slashed move, i can see your reasoning behind it but it's too specific, so put it on other options. You stay mentioning stuff like "ice beam" as if they were in the moves of the sets but they aren't even slashed, so make sure to fix that so we can see what to comment about it. o.o

The given EV spread lets Slowking avoid the 2HKO from Mega Manectric's Thunderbolt most of the time while being able to take on powerful special wallbreakers such as Mega Gardevoir and Landorus without Knock Off. The rest of the EVs go into Defense in order to soften hits against the likes of Mega Metagross
252 SpA Mega Manectric Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 212+ SpD Slowking: 212-252 (53.8 - 63.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

I don't know where you got a calc like that. Not to mention you missed the jump point on Special Defense, so why not make it 248 HP / 44 Def / 216 SpD instead?

Thanks damage calc for putting in Mega Manectric as normal Manectric. Sorry about that my mistake. I'll fix both of the above. Also switching to using clone's spread since it's better than the current one anyways. Also I'm hesitant about removing power gem since one of the main selling points of AV is that Slowking is able to take two Zard Y solar beams and Power gem let's it 2HKO back.

Grass Knot in OO for fat waters, Calm Mind and Nasty Plot for setting up. Power Gem should also mention Volcarona and Talonflame as one of the targets. Also stay tuned for spread changes cause that Slowking set right now for its support set runs the risk of getting 2HKO'd by Landorus which is super silly to use when one of Slowkings best assets is being a Landorus switch in and the AV set right now says it survives 2 Solarbeams from Char-Y but it potentially has a chance to get 2HKO still even with a Timid nature.

Honestly I've messed around with Icy Wind and it offers good speed control, I'd put that in OO if it isn't seen as that bad. It doesn't hit as hard as say, Ice Beam but it offers great speed control if you lack Thunder Wave, also making some scarfers regretting switching in to hit Slowking with a decent-ish strong move. It's also good on AV since you can't use Thunder Wave, but as I said, probably a mention in OO, as long as some people don't see it as complete shit... Lookin' at you, AM.

...the AV set right now says it survives 2 Solarbeams from Char-Y but it potentially has a chance to get 2HKO still even with a Timid nature.
This is kind of a tall order though. I was messing around with calcs and stood aghast as I beheld the fevers:

252+ SpA Mega Charizard Y Solar Beam vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Assault Vest Slowking: 150-178 (38 - 45.1%) -- 8.2% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock (same calc if both natures are neutral)
252+ SpA Mega Charizard Y Solar Beam vs. 252 HP / 252 SpD Assault Vest Slowking: 166-196 (42.1 - 49.7%) -- 89.1% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock

So Slowking needs to have max HP, a positive nature, and 176 SpDef EVs to live 2 SolarBeams after SR from Timid Zard. I mean it's nice if rocks aren't up but I don't think that's something you can really rely on. I would personally scrap this as a benchmark and focus on Landorus or something; 248 HP/56 SpDef survives 2 EPs with SR and sand against neutral Lando, it takes 160 SpDef to do the same against +SpAtk but I'm not sure if that's worth it since you can abuse its affirmed lack of speed and the almost forced second EP to pivot around it when you learn it isn't sitting at that dangerous 331 Speed. The EVs that you would put into surviving Zard are better off elsewhere.

Gimmick

Electric potential
^ Agreed. Not to mention Slowking needs Power Gem to even check Zard-Y in the first place since it needs a Modest nature and a ton of SAtk investment to even reliably 2HKO back with Psyshock whereas vs. Landorus it only needs 24 SAtk to OHKO with Ice Beam and always 2HKOs with Scald.

Also, I think it would be worth including an Offensive Trick Room set somewhere in the analysis whether it be a set or filed under other options (without "but Cresselia is better").

"Trick Room can be used though Cresselia is generally better at this since it has much greater bulk and has access to Lunar Dance"

The thing with Slowking, though, is that it actually has offensive presence and acts as a pivot because of Regenerator. These are both attributes of Slowking that don't belong to Cresselia and pair excellently with Trick Room. Not to mention Slowbro's analysis includes an OTR set in other options. Slowking even has Nasty Plot to boot, making it quite powerful under TR.

EDIT: Many, many apologies. This only applies during GP stage. Maybe read this then :)

Heya, I'm an am checker (haven't done much for about 6 months though) so I can't give you a QC stamp but I can check:

  • First bullet point should read 'Slowbro cannot, as well' for better readability,
  • Repeat of 'take' in the third bullet point
  • Don't need to mention its speed, that's not really important to mention for a defensive Pokemon (according to Jukain)
  • Last bullet point in the summary should be a positive one, maybe the point on great coverage and support options?
  • Probably better to say 'Psyshock 2HKOes' in the present tense for all of them (that format) rather than saying 'to 2HKO'. Or, putting it another way, you say what it does rather than what it's for. Sentences should generally be more 'active voice'
  • Ice Beam needs to be placed in one of the move slots (as an alternative option to (a) move(s) or its sentence needs to be removed
  • There could be some more mention of downsides to using certain slashed moves
  • Rewritten set details section: 'The given EV spread lets Slowking avoid the 2HKO from Metagross's +1 Meteor Mash, avoid the 2HKO from Mega Lopunny's Return (without Stealth Rocks), while still having enough Special Defense investment to take on the likes of Landorus and Latios'
  • 'status' is not capitalised (usage tips, Defensive set)
  • FWG is not a recognised abbreviation according to this and newbies won't understand it, please rephrase the point without 'FWG'
  • 'perfect type synergy' and 'Slowking and Mega Venusaur also form a nice core...' (Just mention 'type synergy' once so newbies have a better chance of understanding what that means)
  • 'access to Spikes, making'
  • Rephrased last point in the Defensive set: 'Slowking hates status effects, so Pokemon that resist[?l status like Clefable or Gliscor make great partners; the latter in particular also takes Knock Off well and has good synergy with Slowbro' not sure how to phrase the 'status absorbers' thing but I haven't heard it said that way before so I'm not sure that's correct
  • The description for Scald in the second set needs to be more analytical E.g., Scald can burn physical threats such as x (rather than 'it has a nice chance to burn' which we know)
  • Rephrased: 'Future Sight is useful in pressuring offensive teams as it forces them to decide which Pokemon should take a hit from Future Sight' - also, Future Sight needs to be added as a slashed move somewhere
  • 'given' shouldn't be capitalized
  • Explain what you mean by 'this set should be played more like a bulky pivot'...newbies might not know what bulky pivot means.
  • Absorbing super effective hits and good [type] synergy are essentially the same thing, so remove the comment about synergy for variety
  • 'check a large variety of special attackers' is probably more natural
  • Explain WHY Choice Banded Tyranitar gives it problems and, indeed, explain WHY all the Pokemon you listed give it problems. As Jukain says - this section is for people trying to find out how exactly to check/counter the Pokemon

The guide was an enjoyable read though, you seem to understand a LOT about this Pokemon! Good job :)

Grammar isn't really much of an issue during the QC stage. Also, for reference, if something is mentioned in moves and not slashed (e.g. Future Sight), it means that it is a step above OO, but not good enough to warrant a slash.

I added in the moves mentioned for OO and changed to AV spread to what BKC suggested for now. Both sets are still up for changes on the EV spread.

Was doing some calcs since AM said earlier that the support sets EV spread is going to be changed since it doesnt avoid the 2HKO from Landorus's Earth Power, but I found out that it is impossible to avoid the 2HKO from modest earth power after rocks; even with max spdef lol. I say this because the Rock Polish set tends to be more common which runs Modest.

252+ SpA Life Orb Sheer Force Landorus Earth Power vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Slowking: 169-200 (43 - 50.8%) -- 51.6% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

So, it wants to realistically avoid the 2HKO from Timid / Naive Landorus's Earth Power.
Even that has to run near max spdef to avoid the 2HKO.

252 SpA Life Orb Sheer Force Landorus Earth Power vs. 248 HP / 244+ SpD Slowking: 153-183 (38.9 - 46.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

However, if you don't take stealth rock damage into account here is how much spdef it would need to avoid these two 2HKOs.

252+ SpA Life Orb Sheer Force Landorus Earth Power vs. 248 HP / 196+ SpD Slowking: 175-208 (44.5 - 52.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery [248 HP / 64 Def / 196 SpD]
252 SpA Life Orb Sheer Force Landorus Earth Power vs. 248 HP / 92+ SpD Slowking: 175-208 (44.5 - 52.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery [248 HP / 168 Def / 92 SpD]
This spread could also be bumped up to 96 sdpef which gives more efficiency since it hits one of the jump points in spdef (raises 2 stat points with 4 EVs instead of one)

The slight loss in defense investment I feel would be worth this change considering how much of an important threat Landorus is.
Clone's spread is very good as well, and still deserves a mention in the case that one of these spreads is bumped to the main one.

Oh, my apologies, I got QC confused with GP. Is GP the next stage? If so, maybe the OP could use my advice then? Thanks :/ Really sorry for that lol.

About the slashed moves, sorry, I didn't read Jukain's post correctly :/

Switch around the set order so AV is first, support second.

AV set go with 248 HP / 204 SpA / 56 Modest. Set details can mention the alternate spreads that have been mentioned for specific purposes. Ice beam slash switched around with Dragon Tail.

Stick with 252 HP / 40 Def / 216 SpD for the jump point Punchshroom mentioned on the support set. Put Clones set in set details as it's more team specific in handling specific threats while not handling Landorus based on switch ins and Timid Landorus. Mention what these alternate spreads are used for.

Rocky Helmet in OO for physical attackers, Psychic should be in OO as it hits threats like defensive M-Venusaur a bit more.

QC 1/3 once this is done Hootie.

I'm not sure it's a great idea to rely on Slowking as a Landorus counter, as it's easily 2HKO'd by a combination of Knock Off and Earth Power. Not to mention, Landorus is often paired with a Pursuit Pokemon; giving Slowking so few Defense EVs only makes it more vulnerable to being trapped.

Giving Slowking that many defense EVS at that point you might as well just use Slowbro with special defense investment in regards to its support set.

I'm not saying I necessarily support Clone's spread, but I just question the effectiveness of an all-out specially defensive set. It doesn't seem to answer a whole lot of powerful special attackers very well, or least not nearly as well as something like Chansey.
