Smeargle Lead (First RMT)

This is my first time doing an RMT. I don’t know if this is a good set-up for the thread or not. It has a fairly good win ratio, probably 2 out of 3 at its best with predictions. Feel free to criticize me as harshly as possible.

Team:

Smeargle

Latios

Shelmet

Jellicent

Starmie

Alakazam

The Lead:

Smeargle

Item: Focus Sash

Ability: N/A

Nature: All –Speed Natures are usable

EV Spread: 252 HP/4 Atk/ 252 Sp Atk (0 IV’s in Def, Sp Def, and Speed)

Moveset:

-Magic Coat

-Destiny Bond

-Metal Burst

-Protect

Smeargle is undoubtedly the sacrificial Pokemon here. Its purpose is to scout and possibly OHKO the opposing Pokemon. It also reflects hazards, something which Breloom leads do not generally expect. If a physical attacker shows up, Metal Burst gives you a guaranteed OHKO on anything with under 471 HP, with the obvious exceptions of Sturdy and the Focus items. Destiny Bond: In case you mispredict a physical attacker for a hazard setter (such as Ferrothorn using gyro ball) and are still fast enough to take it out.

The Back-Up:

Alakazam

Item: Leftovers

Ability: Magic Guard

Nature: Timid

EV Spread: 4 HP/ 252 Sp Atk/252 Speed

Moveset:

-Calm Mind

-Psyshock

-HP Fighting

-Substitute

On this team, Alakazam is more of a last resort than anything. Its pitiful defense ruins any good it will probably be doing. HP Fighting is to cover those pesky Ttars, while Psyshock deals with most Pokemon that resist it because Def is their weak stat. Calm Mind needs no explanation. Substitute. It’s definitely the oddball here. It works well for a late game sweep and can protect Alakazam from those pesky T-waves.

The Power:

Latios

Item: Choice Specs

Ability: Levitate

Nature: Timid

EV Spread: 4 HP/252 Sp Atk/ 252 Speed

Moveset:

-Dragon Pulse

-Roost

-Surf

-Luster Purge

This Pokemon is the offensive core of the team. With a massive special attack and a monstrous speed, Latios is a force with which to be reckoned. Dragon Pulse comes in at a whopping 202 power. While Draco Meteor initially outshines it, its second use has only 157 power. Roost is only useful in situations where you have been toxic’d and will survive switch-in. Surf to take care of Ttar and the occasional Ninetales. Luster Purge is used to destroy Gengar switch-ins that believe they have nothing to fear.

The Great Wall:

Shelmet

Item: Eviolite

Nature: Calm

Ability: Shell Armor

EV Spread: 248 HP/8 Def/252 SpDef

Moveset:

-Acid Armor

-Recover

-Baton Pass

-Substitute

As Latios is the offensive core, so Shelmet is the defensive. Shelmet’s already good defenses are boosted by Eviolite. Acid Armor adds to the defense boost and is Shelmet’s main move. Recover is used to restore Shelmet so that it may boost again later in the game. Subsitute protects Shelmet from status. Baton Pass is used to pass the boosts to either Latios or Jellicent, as they benefit the most from them. Shelmet’s typing is crucial, as it resists the Dark type attacks that this team is overall weak to. Shell Armor is the ability because it negates the critical hits which would otherwise destroy Shelmet.

The Spinner:

Starmie

Item: Focus Band

Nature: Timid

Ability: Natural Cure

EV Spread: 252 SpAtk/4 SpDef/ 252 Speed

Moveset:

-Rapid Spin

-Thunder

-Ice Beam

-Recover

Starmie exists to cover for Smeargle after it faints. It also provides nice coverage against Flying and Water types. Rapid Spin: No explanation necessary. Ice Beam: Annihilates Virizion and Breloom, as well as 2HKOing Thundurs-T. Thunder: Rain is so prevalent in OU that Thunder is actually the better choice over T-bolt. Recover: To recover health that Starmie loses. Only used when Starmie is guaranteed to survive the next hit, such as drain punch, or knowing sucker punch is their only attacking move. Focus Band over Focus Sash because Starmie will rarely be at the full health necessary for Sash to activate

The Lesser Wall:

Jellicent

Item: Leftovers

Nature: Calm

Ability: Water Absorb

EV Spread: 252 HP/252 SpDef/4 SpAtk

Moveset:

-Recover

-Shadow Ball

-Will-o-Wisp

-Giga Drain

Jellicent, the Magnificent Mustache Pokémon. Jellicent fulfills the roles of Latios and Shelmet, being about 65% as effective as Latios, and if it gets Shelmet’s BP, more useful than Shelmet. Jellicent should also have the defense boosts of Shelmet. Shelmet’s substitute is useful, but not an absolute necessity. Shadow Ball is Jellicent’s main STAB. It hits a lot of `mon’s with a powerful neutral blow. It also 2HKO’s most variations of Gengar. Will-O-Wisp hurts Scizor and Ttar, keeping their Atk stats at +2 maximum. Giga Drain hurts Vaporeon more than Shadow Ball, even factoring STAB. Recover is reliable as Jellicent tends to survive most hits if Def is maxed by Shelmet. Make sure that Jellicent is set to male to reap its full benefits.

Just a few points about the team that stood out right away (I'm not a very experienced player so I may be wrong about certain points):

1. Run Focus Blast on Alakazam because HP fighting only does around 65% to T-tar in the sand (with Life Orb). Also give it Life Orb cause it can't take hits well enough for Leftovers to be useful.
2. Give Latios HP Fire over Roost otherwise you're completely walled by Ferrothorn (no point in being locked into that, it's role will just be to hit hard, and switch out). Also change Luster Purge to Psyshock so you have a way of hitting special walls.
3. Don't use Shelmet. It's completely outclassed by others in OU and wont be able to take enough hits to boost up and pass. If you're looking for a well rounded wall that resists Dark moves, go with the standard Ferrothorn set on smogon.
4. Change the Focus band on Starmie to either Life Orb or Expert Belt (if you don't like the residual damage). Starmie already has decent defenses and having the item only activate 1/10 KO hits is unreliable.
5. If you're making Jellicent a wall, then give it Taunt over Giga Drain. You already have recover in Recover and Taunt prevents others from setting up and cripples defensive Pokemon.
6. Your Smeargle set is unreliable and allows non offensive Pokemon to easily set up hazards. Scouters will easily break your sash and send in a smash-pass counter, which will easily beat your Smeargle. I would suggest either changing Smeargle to a more standard lead Pokemon or changing it to a smash-passing variant.

You also might want to think about putting in a scarfer and Pokemon with a priority move to revenge kill opponents and to deal with setup sweepers. And as you mentioned yourself, Dark type moves will completely destroy your team.
