Smogon Shoddy Server Statistics - October 2008

Lucario doesn't learn Mach Punch. I'm surprised it's doing so well, whenever I try using Lucario I die before I set up or I see a Dusknoir and get burned.

Hehe, I think I'm the one who used Zangoose in Uber.

I've got no idea why things like Metagross and Bronzong are going down in usage. Metagross does a great job against Scizor, and Bronzong is a great counter to any Skymin that lacks Hidden Power Fire. Gyro Ball does loads to it.

i said it in our inside scoop forum but it deserves to be stated again—in many ways doug is smogon's most important member by far, and that could just be regarding his administrative efforts with running all the different ladders andmanaging the ban lists, because what he does with the stats is above and beyond the call of duty. not that many/any of you don't, but please appreciate the sheer amount of time and effort doug has put into compiling these stats and molding them into something meaningful for the community!

Yes, thanks so very much for your work Doug. I really enjoy analyzing the stats, so I do appreciate your hard work.

And talking about ban lists on different ladders, has UU now got only the OU Pokemon and the Ubers on its ban list, so we can begin the testing?

Almost a given, but of course appreciation isn't shown until you say it. Thanks a load Doug!!

Bronzong-- did not like what they did to hypnosis. All the hypnosis user are bound to fall, as their former users really just liked spamming it too much. I'm glad nintendo brought it back down.

Generally all steel types not named scizor are just going to have to deal with the fact that they don't have STAB technician priority from 130 base ATK. As a tank/wall scizor's typing is not that great (lack of resistances, Obi talked about this well when discussing foretress). As a sweeper though, the stat layout plus typing work really great now that his movepool has things that are really threatening now.

Though I have to say that switching metagross to scizor on a team and losing garchomp leaves you aching for a rock resist. That's why I'm rather surprised flygon is still so low. In terms of electric/rock resists (especially in one poke), aside from swampert I got to say Flygon is probably one of the top options around.

. . . Yache-Gabite anyone? :P

It's not like it's wiping out enemies like yache-chomp, but U-Turn and 100 speed with its amazing resistances/immunities make it an incredible Choice user. Not to mention the sheer power of outrage.

Despite that I almost haven't been able to win without it since platinum started, I don't think I've ever run into an enemy flygon. O.o

It's nice to hear appreciation from the community. I do this stuff because I like it personally and I like contributing to the community. These detail stats have been a lot of fun, because they seem to add quite a bit to the discussions around Smogon. Having hard statistics is so much better than theorymon and rumor.

But, giving credit where credit is due -- all of the detail stats programs I wrote, build upon some logging changes made by Colin several months ago. Without his logging changes, all these stats would be almost impossible to collect. Colin deserves a big thanks for getting the ball rolling to allow us to gather more data about the metagame.

Since this is the first month with detailed Hidden Powers, I decided to write a quick little report of worthless Hidden Power trivia. If you haven't figured it out by now -- I really like this stuff, so feel free to ignore it.

Which pokemon rely on Hidden Power the most? Here are the top 30:

This was collected for all pokemon on the standard ladder with at least 1000 uses in October. As you can see, Roserade's HP-Fire is the highest percentage use of Hidden Power of any pokemon in the game. Like I said -- worthless trivia, but interesting if you are a true stats geek...

Oh wow there was a pretty big jump in usage of Heatproof Bronzong...it's almost as if one or two players used it as a lead with Earthquake to help deal with Heatran and just laddered with it a bunch...

Wow at Magnezone! It's pretty dependant upon its Hidden Powers!

And, looks like Hidden Power Ice is most popular. Not that it comes as any sort of surprise.

And the popularity of Earthquake, and Adamant and Bold natures just go to show how physically orientated the metagame is.

Anyways, thanks. :)

Brilliant, top 10 natures... Interesting that so many of them are pro Physical and so few are Special... and that a vast majority are offensive.

Big thanks to you Doug, X-Act and Colin for all there great stats!

Doug, you are incredible. (You too X-Act). You both put in an incredible amount of work to pump out these statistics and it really is appreciated.

I'm quite surprised Heatran is only the 19th most used lead; I have seen rather a lot. I can see Metagross being 5th for two reasons in Trick, and Occa / Shuca Berry leads that have become moderately popular it seems. A bit shocked to see the berries were on less than 10% of all Metagross though.

7.5% of Steelix use no item at all? Rather worrying I must say! Curse doesn't seem to have done much for our Steelix. Nice to see a few Chesto Berries on Snorlax (10.5%), I really do love Chesto and Rest movesets!

Aerodactyl now only the 47th (although 70%~ of Aerodactyls are lead), so most used Pokémon in OU is quite a shock, but those who are using it are evidently still using the "suicide lead", for 53% of them carry Stealth Rock, whilst only 35% do on Azelf. Quite odd as Azelf is still the #2 lead-off.

Roserade relying on Hidden Power the most doesn't shock me lots, although "only" 62.7% of Magnezone carrying Hidden Power Ice or Grass does. Seems that Hidden Power Fire has made a comeback for Magnezone, for Scizor.

Fire Blast ranked 16th move wise is shocking, and Flamethrower 19th, because of Scizor's high usage. 40.5% of Salamence carry Outrage, and 35.1% carrying Dragon Claw quite shocked me too. Less than one in ten Salamence are Choice Specs now, yet Hydro Pump is on 11.3% of them! (Brick Break being higher than Fire Fang on Salamence also shocked me).

Chou is exactly right about Flygon. Choice Band Flygon is kickass and if you have Stealth Rock can 2HKO almost anything in the game. U-Turn and 100 Speed means prediction battles are easier + good damage to Cresselia.

tl;dr Flygon is a really useful Pokémon and I really think he'll make OU again.

He's also got Crunch, if he wants to stay in a bit longer.

On another note, Bullet Punch is #18 on Standard's most Popular moves list. I'm willing to bet about 75% of that is due to Scizor.

Aww come on this is disgraceful. Gira-O should never have max HP. 504 is a Stealth Rock number and Gira doesn't have Lefties to recover from it...

Kind of surprised DDRay (50.6) beats SDRay (39.1)
Specs Kyogre is still too dominant

Something interesting to note is that Electrode is the most common UU lead by far, but the only remotely common UU Swift Swimmer is Kabutops at #16.
