Smogon Tournament #8

Tournament Rules | Signups | Round 1 | Round 2 | Round 3

Welcome to Smogon Tournament VIII, the eighth edition of Smogon's premier Standard OU tournament. From the hundreds who will register to play in this tournament, a single champion will be crowned and forever become a part of the exclusive group of elite players that hold an Official Smogon Tournament trophy. Winning this tournament is considered by many to be one of the greatest achievements in competitive Pokémon.

Specific Rules

  • This is a standard BW OU tournament.
  • The tournament will be single elimination.
  • Players will play a best of three series of games each round.
  • Matches are to be played on Pokemon Online (Smogon University server).

Standard Rules and Clauses

  • Sleep Clause: A player cannot put two or more different opposing Pokémon to sleep using attacks that induce sleep to opposing pokémon.
  • Species Clause: A player cannot have two of the same pokémon on their team. For example, a player cannot have two Koffing on his or her team.
  • Wifi Clause: Players must turn on the Team Preview feature where players can view the opposing team's Pokémon and choose their lead Pokémon.
  • Evasion Clause*: A player cannot use the moves Double Team or Minimize in their Pokémon's movesets, and cannot give their Pokémon the hold items BrightPowder or Lax Incense.
  • OHKO Clause*: Players cannot use Horn Drill, Guillotine, Sheer Cold, or Fissure in any of their Pokémon's movesets.
  • Timer Clause*: If a player exhausts the timer, he/she loses.
  • Uber Clause*: Pokémon that are in the Uber Tier are not allowed to be used. The tier list can be found here. In addition, the following restrictions on abilities apply:
    • Players cannot use the ability Moody on any of their Pokémon.
    • Players cannot have a Pokémon with the ability Drizzle and a Pokémon with the ability Swift Swim on the same team.
*These clauses should automatically be enforced in the Smogon University BW OU tier.

Questions and Answers
  • Q: Should I save a log of my match as proof of my victory?
    • A: Yes. While it is not mandatory to show us the log of your victory, it is the only proof you have in the case of a dispute and it is always a good practice to keep the logs of your tournament matches.
  • Q: Will there be a Predictions Tournament like last year?
    • A: Yes. It is hosted by Hipmonlee.
  • Q: Can I change teams between battles/rounds?
    • A: Yes.
Rulings

Those who have followed Smogon's official tournaments should be well aware of these, but here they are again:

Identity

I expect many battles to be completed under alts. This can be bad for tournament security, and thus I will make this clear: If I hear any whispers of identity theft (battling as someone you are not) or proxy battling (helping someone else battle through pm) I will not be pleased and I will take severe actions.

Scouting

Next, I do not want to hear anything about counterteaming, at all. Do not complain about it. I also don't want to hear about any blatant scouting. There is a difference between "[user] is known for using stall" and "let me follow [user] around all day to watch all his battles since I am his opponent". I expect a lot of the former and none of the latter.

With that said, I give permission to all battlers to ask any person spectating their battle to leave if they do not want them watching.

Timer Clause

As for taking long between moves, if your opponent asks you to hurry up, please oblige. If you are doing a damage calc for a key turn that is one thing, but prolonging every move is suspicious and annoying. Don't do it. Furthermore, Battle Timeout is a rule for a reason. If you run out of time, you lose, simple as that. It does not matter what your opponent says. Do not battle if you think you will have to leave mid battle, and instead reschedule for a better time.

Disconnections

Finally, in the case of a disconnect, the decision is in the hands of the player who did not disconnect. The options are: redo the battle move for move, redo the battle with the same teams but different moves, or redo the battle with completely different teams. If the battle was without a doubt over, they may also take the win. Any suspicion that a disconnect was committed on purpose to redo a match may be appealed to me, and if I feel this happened there will be severe consequences, don't do it.

Highlight Matches

reyscarface vs Kevin Garrett

A little boy from Mexico had a dream...a dream to become the best Pokemon player in the world. His name was reyscarface, and his journey to this round of ST8 is worthy of an entire telenova. Reyscarface has triumphed over many hardships: he has won many tournaments, made it to the finals of the most recent Smogon Tour, gotten his green card (not really), and said "hax" over five thousand times. Now he must face his greatest opponent yet: five-star user Kevin Garrett. Kevin Garrett, the very paragon of the saying "fifth time's the charm," is known among Smogon as the champion of the most recent Smogon Tour, the creator of the aptly-named "Kevin Garrett Stall," and the reason why threads here at Smogon no longer operate on a five-star rating system. Both these players come from very different backgrounds; however, they are brought together today - not because it is quite common to hear both their names prefaced with the word "fuck" or followed by the word "sucks" - but because they must face each other in the eighth Official Smogon Tournament and fight...to the death. ~ Eo Ut Mortus

Blue_Star vs Delta 2777

A plucky Team Brazil player faces down a Smogon Tour champion and Metro veteran in what is sure to be a fantastic showdown. According to Oceania player Heist, the rising Blue_Star is 'like a phoenix, never giving up, always reborn after each loss'. In the wake of an SPL victory against Heist, surviving until Round 4 in Sneak, and a 3-1 showing in the World Cup, Blue_Star seems to be on a roll. Yet the experienced Delta has demonstrated consistency throughout his time on Smogon, having won three unofficial tournaments on Smogon and making it to R4 and R5 in previous OSTs. In past OSTs, it took players like vashta and panamaxis to stop Delta's run for the trophy. Will Delta be able to withstand the deluge of y\ns, or will Blue_Star stop Delta in his tracks? This will prove a great test for Blue_Star, but Delta would be silly to underestimate his adversary now. ~ jumpluff

hanke vs badabing

What many would call a battle of David vs Goliath turns out to be one of the best matches in this round. badabing, an unknown yet very skillful player that has been proving this community he's much more than another name to beat faces off against no one less than hanke, former Smogon Tournament winner and overall very solid presence in tournaments these last few years. hanke has definitely proven his worth as a DPP player, but will he be able to overcome this rising star and continue on the run for his second trophy in a whole new generation? ~ Bluewind

Ojama vs Nachos

nacho is gonna be in for a tough fight in order to continue his run of losing in the semi-finals. ojama is a fearsome french adversary whose appearance, ability, and awesomeness strike fear into the hearts of any sane battler and her thorny vines drop the opposing forces just like an iron ball plowing into a man's genitals. ~ Heist

twash vs Lamppost

twash: the champion of the United Kingdom, winner of "This Tournament is Kind of a Big Deal," and the subject of Bartman101's wet dreams. How could anyone who hasn't seen his real-life photo not be intimidated by his very name? But wait! There's...Lamppost? Never mind, stop waiting. Anyone from Akron, Ohio, is destined to choke, and the only reason why we don't call Lamppost the Lebron James of Pokemon is because nobody knows who he is! I kid, though: Lamppost has enjoyed success under Stone_Cold22, not only in fellatio, but also in the recently revived SNEAK tournament, the most recent World Cup of Pokemon, and the current season of SPL. Will twash take out the twash or choke on Lamppost's lamppost? ~ Eo Ut Mortus

Deadline

The deadline for Round 4 Matches will be Thursday, the 19th of January 2012, at 23:59 EST.

Let's try to get an even higher match completion rate this round! Please contact your opponent immediately.

Good luck everyone!
