Alright, well, like a few others I've seen here, this is my first post. I have been hanging around, reading some of the threads and strategy articles, for a little while though.
Anyway,
Why I got into Pokémon:
Well, I've been a huge Nintendo fan since I first got an N64 and Super Mario 64 with it. I had a Game Boy and got into Pokémon as soon as Blue was released. I very quickly became obsessed with it, eventually getting my hands on Blue, Yellow, Gold, Stadium 1 and 2, a few of the spinoffs (Snap, Puzzle League, and Pinball), and finally Sapphire. After Sapphire, though, I lost interest a little. In between growing up and thinking that the games were for a younger crowd, and a dismissal of Emerald, FireRed, and LeafGreen based on my thinking that I had already played similar games, I didn't really do anything Pokémon-related for quite a while. Fast-forward to the start of the Diamond and Pearl animated series, which I ended up watching for no apparent reason. That rekindled my interest in the game a little, and then when I had some spare cash and was looking for a new game to play, my eyes fell on Diamond, and I figured that I might as well try the game again. So I did, and now, well...
Anyway, there's a separate tale here, too. Through my time with the original first, second, and third generations, I never knew or cared that there was a more competitive level to the game. I was a lot younger then. When I came back to Diamond, I played the game more intelligently (like, actually using more than one Pokémon kind of intelligently) but still didn't know things like EVs, IVs, or tiers. And I still rarely played other people, and when I did, they weren't competitive players either. My interest in that level of play didn't really have an easily defined start... although part of it was my attempt over last summer to try to build a team that could compete in the tournament that Nintendo held. I was not selected to participate, though. That was my first attempt at focusing on competitive play.
How I found Smogon:
This one's short and easy. When I met another competitive player that goes to the same university that I do, he recommended that I come here.
Why I "stayed":
Well, again, this is my first post and I've really only been lurking for no more than two weeks. But this site seems to be a really detailed and really helpful look at competitive battling. I want to be better at that style of play, and it seems like this site is the best place for that to happen.
