Soft Resetting Guide for flawless Legendary Pokémon in XY and ORAS!

Hi guys! I see many people are struggling getting the best legendaries in XY and ORAS. A lot of you succeeded capturing flawless Pokémon, but a lot of people still trying to find out how to do this properly. I’ve designed a few Pokémon to make my life easier, when I first started to Soft Reset for Xerneas in my Pokémon X. The stationary Pokémon have 3 fixed IV’s, which are always 31. Which stats get the 31 is always random.

I wrote this guide so people can capture stationary Pokémon with 4, 5 or even 6IV in a Matching Ball, because a Master Ball is so meh. It will also prevent you from capturing totally useless spreads. (0/31/0/0/31/31 Quiet, right..) I hope you all enjoy this guide! Currently still adding info, if you have suggestions or questions, feel free to ask.

Big thanks to these guys for helping me out:

FAQ
Q: Do you have all these Smeargles and Staraptors?
A: Nope.

Q: Do I have a flawless Pokémon after I capture it using this guide?
A: No, you have confirmed the HP and Speed stat.

Q: Why did you make this guide? We can just throw a Master Ball everytime we encounter a Pokémon.
A: Because a Master Ball looks silly. Besides that, using this Smeargle and Staraptor will show you if the Pokémon has 31 HP and Speed. Just throwing a Master Ball will let you capture useless ones too.

Q: Why are you saying Pokémon will have 31IV in a stat, if 30 gives exactly the same? And for Kyogre/Groudon, 29 also gives the same?
A: If the method I describe works, the Pokémon will have either 30 or 31 in that stat (Kyogre/Groudon possibly 29 too). It's always better than not knowing the Speed stat.

What do you need?
  • A Pokémon with the ability Synchronize. This Pokémon should have the nature you want for your Legendary Pokémon,
  • 100+ of all Pokéballs, just in case,
  • 25 Max Revives, just in case,
  • Smeargle (Natu for Lati@s, Sableye for Rayquaza),
  • Staraptor,
  • Pokédex Data of the Pokémon you're going for,
  • Switched OFF Battle Animations,
  • Level 3 Capture O-Power,
  • At least 600 Pokémon in your Pokédex; highest chance on Critical Capture,
  • One free spot in your party to check the newly caught Pokémon.

How does it work?
Before you start, make sure you finished the story mode. In XY, you have to capture Xerneas and Yveltal so that's not an option. In ORAS you have to capture Rayquaza, but for all other Pokémon, make sure the story is finished and you have access to the IV checking guy. (Kiloude Pokécenter XY, Battle Resort Pokécenter ORAS)

First, I will explain how this method works. We should start of by looking at the Pokémon we want to capture.

Get a Synchronizer with the right nature. This will give you a 50% chance the Pokémon you’re going to capture have the same nature. Make sure this synchronizer is fainted before you start the battle. By doing this, you don’t have to switch to Staraptor and waste one turn.

Next up, Staraptor. Staraptor is a fast Pokémon, capable of learning the move Final Gambit. Final Gambit does damage to the opponent equal to the amount of lost HP on the user. Staraptor is desgined to check the IV Stat of the stationary Pokémon. If the stationary Pokémon faints, you reset. If it survives, it will have 1 HP left, and you’re sure it has 31IV in HP. In most cases, stats are the same for 30IV and 31IV. For Groudon and Kyogre, stats can also be 29, because they are level 45.

After this, you’ll switch to Smeargle. Smeargle is designed to check the Speed IV, and for making it sleep. Just check what base Speed your stationary has at that level with wanted nature. Smeargle will have a Speed stat 1 point less. When Staraptor faints, you’ll get a free switch to Smeargle. Use Spore with Smeargle. If you move first, the stationary Pokémon does not have 31IV in Speed, so you’ll reset. If the stationary moves first, it’ll have 31IV in Speed. Again, Spe could also be 30. Now you know the Pokémon you want to capture atleast has 31/xx/xx/xx/xx/31, and a great possibility for it to have the right nature!

Additional Info
The IV's:
For all Pokémon mentioned in this guide, the stats are exactly the same for IV 30 or 31. For Kyogre and Groudon, 29, 30 and 31 give the same stat.

Neutral Speed natures:
Quoting cant say here: "If going for a neutral speed nature and the Pokemon outspeeds you I would say it's still safe to assume your Sync worked as it's only a 16% chance to get a +speed nature if Sync fails (so really it's 8%)." You can always decide to skip the Speed check and just switch to a lvl 100 Smeargle.

The Synchronizer:
When you're going for a +Spe nature, and the Pokémon is outspeding Smeargle, there still is a small chance it got a different +Spe nature. Nothing can be controlled in generation 6. The chance of having the right nature when using the synchronizer is 50%. If it didn't work, it could have any of the other 24 natures. 3 of those are +Spe as well. Do the math. :)

Next part of this guide will show you what you need to do for every stationary Pokémon in XY and ORAS!

Rayquaza works a bit different than the rest, since it uses ExtremeSpeed. You'll have a 25% chance Rayquaza uses ExtremeSpeed as first move, which makes it impossible to check HP with Staraptor. But fear not! Here is the solution!

When aiming for +Speed nature:
Sableye @ Air Balloon
Level: 100

How to capture Rayquaza:
Fainted sync in front. Sableye at second spot. When you enter the battle, you can check the Spe IV right away. If Sableye's Air Balloon message goes first, reset. If Rayquaza's Air Lock Ability goes first, 31IV in Spe and +Spe nature confirmed. When you've confirmed the Spe stat, we can check the HP. If this lvl 70 Rayquaza has 31IV in HP, it will have 248 HP. Use Pain Split. Sableye has 252 HP, so the average HP is (248 + 252 = 500, 500/2=250) 250. If you have LESS than 250 HP after Pain Split, reset. If you have 250 HP after Pain Split, confirmed 31IV in HP. Now switch to Smeargle and keep using Spore to get it down to 1HP.

The Lati@s work a little different than the rest of this guide. Since they are level 30 with 97 HP, it's for Staraptor impossible to have 96 HP. since it learns (as Starly) Final Gambit at level 41.

The Natu. Works as Synchronizer, HP AND Speed Checker. Credit for this goes to Jibaku. Save in front of Latias. Use Night Shade to check HP and Spe. If Latias faints, reset. If Latias survives, confirmed 31IV in HP. If you move first, reset. If Latias moves first, confirmed +Spe nature and 31IV in Speed. Natu will have 87 Speed when holding the Macho Brace. How to capture Latios:
The Lati@s work a little different than the rest of this guide. Since they are level 30 with 97 HP, it's for Staraptor impossible to have 96 HP. since it learns (as Starly) Final Gambit at level 41.

The Natu. Works as Synchronizer, HP AND Speed Checker. Credit for this goes to Jibaku. Save in front of Latios. Use Night Shade to check HP and Spe. If Latios faints, reset. If Latios survives, confirmed 31IV in HP. If you move first, reset. If Latios moves first, confirmed +Spe nature and 31IV in Speed. Natu will have 87 Speed when holding the Macho Brace. Use Thunder Wave to increase the capture rate.

You could use Thunder Wave, but best would be to switch to a Pokémon that can Spore it.

I captured Kyogre using a Shedinja. Kyogre can't touch shedinja and it has Heal Block to cancel Aqua Ring's effect in case it uses it turn 1(really annoying) when you use Final Gambit with Staraptor. Shedinja can also use False swipe to make it go back to 1HP. You can also use this pokemon against other legends without super effective moves against it. Pretty useful imo and you don't have to worry about being KO'd.

Also everyone should get the Capture O-power (at least lvl 2) before trying to SR any Legends it makes things a lot easier. Currently SRing Terrakion and it feels like catching wild caterpies when I use the lvl 3 :P

Would be cool to list the moves each legend carries and a calc of aprox how many turns you have before they start struggling.

Nice Thread btw :D

Thanks guys! Will add moves later and change the part for Raikou, Entei & Suicune. Can't edit the first post anymore, keep getting errors. >_>

I actually have a better way of doing this that does not involve smeargle.

It's a pokemon called Breloom, it has high atk and can learn spore and false swipe.

Also the smeargle trick does not work on rayquaza 100% of the time more like 50% of the time with the way it spams extreeme speed because extreeme speed has this little thing called PRIORITY.

If you want to check speed regardless of priority where the legendary has an ability that states that it has it the second the battle starts (ie pressure, air lock, etc.) try leading with a pokemon that has a similarly activating ability but has 1 less speed stat than the perfect speed iv and nature of the legendary pokemon you are trying to catch.

So that way when both pokemon enter the battle if the legendary has perfect speed ivs then its ability will activate first.

As for the HP thing you're actually quite good with that unless you're dealing with rayquaza which can again use extreeme speed and screw you over as you now have to catch the pokemon to find out its stats.

I also don't consider HP that important to check in battle over speed as speed is much easier to check than HP as HP can be cheked the second you open the team menu/start the thing after you catch rayquaza.

I got a 31/4-8/31/29/31/31 Latios in only a few short hours so I have some tips to share with SRing Lati@s, as it can prove to be obnoxious:

1. Latis are obtained before the IV checker guy, so Rare Candies are invaluable to confirm IVs. Rare Candies can be easily obtained early game by spending Pokemiles in Mauville or via Game Sync in the PGL; 5-10 are good. If you have a Pokebank subscription, check to see if you have accrued Pokemiles from it. If not, Wonder Trade is an easy way. Haven't checked to see if you can import preexisting Pokemiles from XY carts via PGL, I heard you can.

2. Have a FAINTED synch in the beginning of the party. Timid covers pretty much all Lati@s sets and is the safest choice. The best source for Synchs if you can't trade is Ralts on route 102; have fun with DexNav. The second Pokemon in your party (or first unfainted) should be the strongest one in your roster. See step #4 for why.

3. Save in the grove in Southern Island one step from initiating the cutscene and battle with Team Aqua/Magma and Steven.

4. The double battle with Team Aqua/Magma and Steven is mandatory before you receive your Lati@s. Luckily, the battle can be finished in one turn. Steven uses a Metang that OHKOs the enemy Koffing with Zen Headbutt. Your Pokemon should OHKO the other Pokemon being used - Camerupt in OR and Sharpedo (I think?) in AS.

5. Receive Lati@s and compare with flawless stats. Here are example stats for what 31/31/31/31/31/31 looks like at lv30 for Timid:

Latios (Timid):
HP: 97
Atk: 61
Def: 62
SpA: 92
SpD: 80
Speed: 88

Latias (Timid):
HP: 97
Atk: 55
Def: 68
SpA: 80
SpD: 92
Speed: 80

Attack doesn't matter for Timid, these aren't useful if you're gunning for other natures, but you should immediately restart if it deviates too much from these.

6. If it's close enough for you to think you got a good one, use Metalkid's IV calculator and the Rare Candies you got in step 1 to approach the proper IV spread.

P.S. 30 Speed is only acceptable if you have a HP Fire spread. If it doesn't have HP Fire or 31 Speed, toss immediately and spare us the obvious question of whether to keep or toss please.

7. Rinse and repeat! Watch TV or Netflix while softresetting. Good luck!

Hopefully my guide wasn't too all over the place, but I believe my method is the most efficient.

Attack should be 61 for Latios, and 55 for Latias. And I believe it would be more efficient to have a Speed Bag L (as well as maybe ones for other stats you care about) ready to use in Super Training, as it gives precisely 12 EV's in a stat. If it goes up by a point, then it's perfect. The EV's can also be easily erased by giving it some EV reducing berries or using a Reset Bag if the intent is to use it for trading.

Woops, my bad on the typo.

I didn't like Speed Bags or vitamins all that much because you still need to check all stats and you'll need levels anyways to confirm IVs. Speed isn't the only stat that matters, I only mention it because you can't compromise on it like you can the other stats.

Just an FYI that Mega Latias uses Bold for its SubCM set if you plan on playing with it in OU Singles.

Also Buckert, feel free to use this list I made earlier for desired natures. Note it doesn't include XY Legendaries.

You can still use MetalKid's calculator and just use Vitamins / Super Training to determine the IVs without levelling. Enter the stats into the first line on the calculator with the level set to 30. Then give Lati@s / Legendary Pokemon 12 EVs in every stat, enter the new level 30 stats on the next row down also set to level 30 and include the 12 EVs you just gave the Lati@s / whatever. Repeat adding 12 EVs to every stat and entering the new level 30 data below the last one you did until you get a definitive answer for each IV value, then wipe the EVs with a Reset Bag and you have a completely untouched Pokemon (that holds a lot more trade value) that you know the exact IVs of. You may need to enter more than 5 lines of data so just add more by changing the value in the 'Number of Rows' box. As for applying EVs; Super Training is free but can be tedious (easy if you've got access to level 3 training already), Vitamins are expensive but easy / fast so if you're rolling in cash I would go Vitamins...

edit: added a screenshot of how I did it with my Latias because I felt like my description sucks. I stopped training every stat after 48 because everything was defined except SpD so I added 4 to it a couple of times to determine it

Which is why I used Rare Candies instead, much faster to check IVs and easier to get early game than using a bunch of vitamins/punching bags for each stat. There's a limit to how many punching bags you can store, takes a while to beat them up and you have to use vitamins for each stat.

Which would lower the trade value of your Lati / Legend because it's no longer 'Untrained' ;) This was specifically for people that think that is important (almost all of Wi-fi). Obviously there will be people who don't mind, to which I highly recommend Rare Candies

ps. added a screenshot of me determining the IVs of my Latias with the method I described. It took me 20 rounds of level 3 Super Training to get to 48 in each stat so I can see how that would be tedious to most, but I feel like it's time well spent for those who desire UT 'mons. Alternatively, you could do the exact same thing but only with the speed stat to save time as that's the important one. Everything else can be at least 30...

Oh, I wasn't aware of that imo a bit ridiculous lol, I only really care about competitive value, but I think it should still be noted for people who also don't care and just want to efficiently soft reset ASAP because it drastically cuts down the time spent on each reset.

Well I guess you should bookmark the next version of this thread, I cannot edit the first post anymore due to a strange bug. I might need to post a new thread.

That is too bad :(
A tag for what pokemon can be Shedinjad could be useful too :P

Ask one of the OI Moderators to revert it back to a previous version. Most of the time this bug is caused by missing BB code tags, generally, reverting it back to a previous version will fix it.

Really nice guide Buckert. I only check Speed, because it's just easier and I don't care about the ball, so I just throw the Master Ball if the speed is right. One thing to note is that you want to have the legend you are going to catch in your Pokedex, so you don't have to go through the dex entry every time you catch it.

I have reverted this thread to an older version thanks to some advice from Agonist It now seems to be editable. I reverted back to the last stable post I could edit myself.

However, I would URGE you to go through and fix all the BB Tags. Sometimes Xenforo THINKS it is being helpful, when it is not at all. At the bottom of your post you have this mess:

Code:
[IMG]http://www.serebii.net/xy/pokemon/488.png[/IMG]
[SIZE=1][B]Cresselia[/B][/SIZE][/SIZE][/SIZE][/SIZE][/SIZE][/SIZE][/SIZE][/SIZE]
[/SIZE][/SIZE][/SIZE][/SIZE][/SIZE][/SIZE][/SIZE][/SIZE][/SIZE][/SIZE][/SIZE]
[/SIZE][/SIZE][/SIZE][/SIZE][/SIZE][/SIZE][/SIZE][/SIZE][/SIZE][/SIZE][/SIZE]
[/SIZE][/SIZE][/SIZE][/SIZE][/CENTER]
Either that, or remove some of the BBCode, according to Agonist, this happens sometimes in Wifi when there are a large amount of BB tags in the post. A lot of it is not needed (I know it looks pretty), but it may help the post be more stable.

I've placed all the size tags on the places I needed them, posted the thread, and now it looks like this. xD Will remove the unnecessary BB tags, thanks a lot!

Unless you're going to provide everyone with copies of a Smeargle with a speed IV of 5, I would re-do it so that you can get the same speed stat with a 31 IV, since that's much easier for people to breed. Using +speed Xerneas / Yveltal as an example, a level 77 Sassy Smeargle with a 31 IV and 0 speed EVs has exactly 129 speed. I know you lose out on a whole lot of bulk from being at a lower level but you can always have a backup 'mon to send out if Smeargle goes down. For the sake of this being easy for anyone to utilise I just believe that the capture pokemon builds and spreads should be as easy as possible to acquire yourself, and advising an IV of 5 in speed seems a bit weird to me unless, like I said, you are of course going to distribute those Smeargle yourself.

I understand what you mean. If you consider taking another extra Pokémon for checking stats, you don't have any space left for the Pokémon you're going to capture. If you use a lower level Smeargle to check Speed, it'll more likely it'll faint during the battle, without the Pokémon to be caught. You want the Smeargle as high leveled as possible, so it'll survive as long as you need. But if you decide to take the extra Smeargle, you'll have 4 Pokémon in your party. The fainted sync, the Staraptor for HP and 2 Smeargles.

Now there's something I need to figure out for the Regigigas, since it require to have the 3 Regi's in your team. xD Will work that out soon!

Edit: I will chance Smeargle's IV's to either 31 or 00 for Speed. 31 is not going to work in every situation.

For example:
Lets say I want a Quiet Heatran, for the ErupTran set. Level 50 Heatran will have 73 Speed, with Quiet nature and 0IV in Speed. To make sure Heatran really has that 73 Speed, we need a Smeargle with 74 Speed. To achieve that with Sassy nature 31IV in Speed, it needs to be level 43 with 4 EV's in Speed. It'll be dead in 2 hits.

Edit2: Completed Cresselia with +Spe, Neutral Spe and -Spe setups.

Edit3: Completed Xerneas, Yveltal and Kyogre. Added all moves + PP.
