[STABmons] Stoutland [QC 0/3]

Overview:
  • One of the stronger Normals in terms of attack stats, and it's typing of mono normal means that it lacks the stealth rock weakness that stronger one's like Braviary have
  • Scrappy allows it to beat through Sableye and other Ghosts, which are common stops to Fake Out + Extremespeed, and unbeatable Rapid Spin
  • With Superpower, it has perfect neutral coverage between two moves
  • These two combined make it a threatening Belly Drum sweeper as well
  • Isn't strong enough to beat through most walls, especially if it lacks a super effective coverage move
  • Still one of the most reliable revenge killers in the tier
Set: Revenge Killer

Moveslot 1: Extreme speed
Moveslot 2: Fake Out
Moveslot 3: Superpower / Fire Fang
Moveslot 4: Ice Fang / Rapid Spin
Item: Silk Scarf / Leftovers
Ability: Scrappy
Nature: Adamant / Jolly
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

Set Details:

Moves:

  • Extreme speed is the main attack and is what allows Stoutland to be a revenge killer, as it has priority above nearly every other move in the game.
  • Fake Out is a secondary move that let's Stoutland get a little more damage that can let it secure KOs. It also has priority higher than Extremespeed, so that you can hit pokemon that are using Extreme speed as their attacking move first
  • Superpower is the main coverage option, hitting everything in the game bar Shedinja for neutral damage, and things like Heatran, Aegislash, and Tyranitar for Super effective damage.
  • Elemental Fangs, mainly Fire and Ice, can be used to beat specific Pokemon like Scizor or Landorus-I
  • Rapid Spin makes Stoutland have two roles at once, by letting also clear hazards for the team. This works because Stoutland forces the opponent to switch out of it often to preserve their pokemon, giving it a free turn to spin

Set Details:
  • While Intimdate is a good ability to help force physical sweepers out, Scrappy is more useful because it makes Stoutland more flexible in what it can beat, and harder to switch into
  • EVs maximize speed and attack, etc. (talk about why the extra bulk is usually negligible, and how important it is to try and win the "speed creep / tie" against other FakeSpeeders)
  • Silk Scarf boosts the two most used moves on the set, Fake Out and Extreme speed, by the largest multiplier, without losing any longevity or forcing you to lock yourself into a move.
  • Adamant is the preferred nature due to speed being irrelevant when dealing with +2 priority for the most part, and Stoutland really needing the extra power since Extreme speed is a relatively weak move at 80 bp.
  • Jolly is used more as a precaution, since it will help Stoutland beat the other Fake Out + Extreme speed users in the tier, which are such staples that the trade off of beating them or most of the rest of the tier is close
Usage Tips:

  • Fake Out is a move that should be used when necessary for the situation, not at all times. This means that unless PP is a realistic issue, Extreme speed should be the main move used for Revenge Killing, since it is harder for the opponent to switch into
  • The situations where Fake Out is the correct play is in the aforementioned PP scenario, when the pokemon in front of Stoutland needs more than just an Extremespeed to KO it, or when facing off against other, faster Extreme speed users.
  • If using Rapid Spin, the move should be used as Stoutland comes in on a pokemon that either has no offensive presence, or a pokemon that is too important to the opponent that he or she would risk leaving it in. For example, bringing Stoutland in on a Weavile after a KO, and the Weavile is the only way your opponent can KO your Landorus-T
  • Do not leave Stoutland in after a KO if it isn't going to OHKO the next pokemon your opponent sends out. This is your primary way of dealing with the most dangerous part of your opponent's team, and your go-to bailout when in need, so it is too important to sacrifice just to get off damage. This includes Superpower-ing a Sableye for a KO that is being mildly annoying, in exchange for a burnt Stoutland.
Team Options:
  • Very flexible, since having a Fake Out + Extreme Speed user is a very important thing to have on a team, so most teams will make room for this.
  • Things particularly go particularly well with Stoutland as a Fake Out + Extreme Speed user are pokemon that can break through the likes of its common checks, Landorus-T, Ferrothorn, Mega Scizor, Slowbro, and Heatran (carrying King's Shield).
  • Status absorbers and clerics are also helpful, since Stoutland cannot beat a Defensive Sableye thats at full HP without getting burned in the process, so a cleric or another pokemon that can absorb Status are particularly helpful. This can be something like a Clefable, or a Sleep Talk Heatran which can also absorb sleep from Dark Void.
  • This means a special based Trapper like Magnezone is extremely useful, since it can hit the walls that come in on Stoutland hard, and is able to Volt Switch out of its special walls into Stoutland, all while eliminating any Steel.
  • Weavile is a physical attacker that doesn't ever fear Landorus-T thanks to its Ice STAB, so it can cover that weakness as well.
  • Celebi is another pokemon that synergizes well with Stoutland, since it can bring Stoutland safely into a Serperior, since Celebi can't be Spore'd, resists Leaf Storm, and can break a Substitute with U-Turn.
  • Other Strong special attackers like Thundurus, Meloetta, and Mega Blastoise can all help power through opposing walls on the other defensive stat.
Set: Belly Drum

Moveslot 1: Belly Drum
Moveslot 2: Extremespeed
Moveslot 3: Superpower
Moveslot 4: Lovely Kiss / Protect / Ice Fang
Item: Sitrus Berry / Lum Bery
Ability: Scrappy
Nature: Adamant / Jolly (I prefer Adamant, but jolly seems the better option so it can beat Adamant Kanga / Stout. But who runs RK Kanga though?)
EVs: 4 Hp / 252 Atk / 252 Spe

Set Details:

Moves:

  • Belly Drum lets you multiply your attack by 4, and turns you into a juggernaut
  • Extremespeed allows you to move before most of your opponents, and KO them before they can attack
  • Lovely Kiss makes setup easier, giving you a free turn to Belly Drum once something is put to sleep. Additionally, it the sweep fails, something will still be asleep at the end, as well as any KOs made
  • Protect gives you a way to stop an opponent's Fake Out + Extremespeed users, since most are incapable of beating Stoutland with just a single Extremespeed
  • An elemental fang makes it easier to deal with extremely bulky pokemon like Landorus-T or Skarmory, however they often won't be as useful as a different move in this slot

Set Details:

  • Scrappy hits ghosts like Sableye. You need it.
  • Nature could go either way right now, I'm personally Adamant, but not sure yet which it should be here. What do you guys think?
  • Sitrus Berry lets you restore your HP after a Belly Drum, making Stoutland to take residual damage or Fake Outs for longer
  • Lum Berry is another option so that you can set up on status users, like Sableye or Serperior safely, although it is a lot less ocnsistently useful since it often won't ever be consumed most matches.

Usage Tips:
  • Since a single team will often have only 2 checks to Belly Drum, and rarely more than 3, Stoutland should wait to set up for once they have been weakened, so that Stoutland can muscle past them and win if it gets to Belly Drum.
  • If Lovely Kiss is the fourth move, then setting up is as simple as bringing Stoutland in after something is KO'd by something on your opponents team that Stoutland outspeeds. Then, put it to sleep and Belly Drum with the free turn that you have.
  • Other ways that can create setup opportunities is by bluffing the revenge killing set, and Belly Drumming as they switch out trying to preserve their pokemon. This works especially well coming in on the opponents Fake Out + Extreme Speed user with Protect as the last move, since the opponent usually faces high pressures to preserve that pokemon to stop their sweepers, but they won't be able to beat Stouland that Protect their Fake Out.
  • Walls that are easily overwhelmed at +6, and don't have much offensive presence or relevant way to harm Stoutland also provide for good opportunities to set up. These include no Attack investment Landorus-T, non Will-O-Wisp Sableye, and non Toxic Gliscor
Team Options:
  • Slow U-turn / Volt Switch from pokemon like Mega Scizor and Rotom-W can get Stoutland in easily on things that it sets up on.
  • Dual Screens support from a Deoxys-S, Deoxys-D, or Espeon allows it to struggle less trying to set up a Belly Drum
  • Having a second normal on the team like a Braviary or Ursaring that can clean up with Fake Out + Extreme Speed of its own will help serve as a good way to beat anything that Stoutland was only able to weaken
  • A reliable hazard setter makes Stoutland's job easier to do, letting it power through the bulkiest of walls. Bulky Garchomp does this well since it also has the benefit of beating Mega Scizor 1v1 with either Roar or Fire Blast.
  • Magnazone can trap Steels that could attempt to King's Shield you. Dugtrio and Gothitelle also can do this, but Magnezone is more consistently useful than them due to its raw power
Strategy Comments:

Other Options:

  • Shell Smash is another great boosting move that Stoutland has access to, and can be used in conjunction with Protect, Extreme Speed, and Super Power as a faster cleaner, however it doesn't accomplish anything that Belly drum does not, except for preventing Extreme Speed speed ties and beating faster Fake Out + Extreme Speed users.
  • Play Rough and Crunch are other possible coverage options to hit Ghosts harder, particularly Sableye, however Scrapp Extreme Speed does this better, especially since all the relevant ghosts outspeed Stotuland naturally.
  • Head Charge is a possible fourth move on the Revenge Killer set as an extremely powerful attack to dent the walls that come in on Stoutland.
  • Baton Pass is a possible other move for the Belly Drum sets, but few there are few things you'd rather have sweeping than Stoutland.
Checks and Counters:

**Physical Walls**: Landorus-T, Slowbro, Skarmory, and Ferrothorn can switch into the revenge killing variants with little to fear. Only Skarmory however can beat a Belly Drum set, and all of these Pokemon should be mildly cautious of a possible third coverage move on revenge killing set (Landorus-T only takes 45% max from -1 Ice Fang, phys def Slowbro takes 39% from Wild Charge and Skarmory takes 38%. Ferrothorn takes 56% from Fire Fang, and 51% from Superpower)

**Residual Damage**: Since Stoutland will require multiple contact based moves to KO a pokemon (typically a Fake Out + Extreme Speed), Iron Barbs, Rough Skin, and Rocky Helmet can quickly deteriorate Stoutland's health. Sandstorm and Status in conjunction with moves like King's Shield also help quickly deplete Revenge Killing Stoutlands health. The importance and nature of a Fake Out + Extreme Speed user also means that Stoutland will need to switch in and out often, and it is susceptible to all types of entry hazards.

**King's Shield**: As mentioned above, all of Stoutland's main moves are contact based. This allows Steel types to have the ability to force Revenge Killers out after a drop, or slowly attempt to deal with Belly Drummers. Since Stoutland must actually attack into the King's Shield, it is an unreliable way to stop Belly Drum sets.

**Faster / Higher Priority Fake Out + Extreme Speed**: Fake Out is one of the few reliable ways to beat Stoutland after it has Belly Drummed, however it won't work if Stoutland carries protect. For the revenge killing set, coming in with your own Fake Out + Extreme Speed user after Stoutland gets a KO will either force it out, or usually beat it 1 on 1 if your pokemon starts healthier.

**Unaware**: The easieast way to beat the Belly Drum sets is with an Unaware user. Clefable and Quagsire, the two best users of this, can wall Stoutland after a Belly Drum regardless of it's coverage move (provided full defensive investment for Clefable), and run it out of PP on Extreme Speed. Lovely Kiss however can actually allow Stoutland to beat them, so caution is necessary when trying to 1 vs. 1 it. Additionally, fully defensive Quagsire can also beat the Revenge Killing sets as well, since they are often wielding Extreme Speed as their strongest move, which cannot break through Quagsire.

**Mega Scizor**: One of the safer things to bring on on Revenge Killing sets. With max HP, it only takes 33% at most from Superpower. It does take 70% from Fire Fing, so that is a way that Stoutland beats it.

Ready for QC 2, but here are some things that I had concerns with, or specifically would like to be addressed:
  • The team options are both very slim, particularly the Revenge Killer set. The Belly Drum set only has the stock options of what is good to help enable and abuse sweepers on it (except for dedicated entry hazards and trappers, since it doesn't need either as much as other pokemon). The Revenge Killer set has actually 0 pokemon listed, due to what I put in the section. Teams' need for this role means that the user will be limited in their options in using Stoutland, using a different normal with slightly different benefits or drawbacks, or forego the role entirely, based mostly off of a decision of the user's opinion, and not team composition. Since everything works better having a FakeSpeeder with it, what should be specifically listed as working well with it?
  • The final bullet in Checks and Counters, which explains itself
  • The possibility of listing White Herb as an item on the Belly Drum set

  • I would still list hazard and trappers for the Belly Drum set. Even if it doesn't need them as much as other sweepers, they make its job easier, which is the point of listing teammates. For the FakeSpeeder, list Pokemon that enjoy having frail setup sweepers or things like Talonflame gone.
  • That last bullet in Checks and Counters doesn't look a like a check and/or counter category. I'm not sure what you mean.
  • White Herb sounds way too outclassed by any other item it would want, especially considering it draws in Intimidate. I'd run Lum over White Herb to setup against a status user like Serperior or Sableye.

Overview
  • Time to drop Belly Drum. Stoutland always prefers FakeSpeed over it.
Revenge Killer
  • I like Rapid Spin first in the 4th slot. Scrappy Spin is one of its best selling points besides FakeSpeed.
  • I wouldn't slash Jolly. It wants the power of Adamant.
Moves
  • Drop mention of Aegislash.
Set Details
  • Checking FakeSpeed is a lot easier now because only Ursaring (or Snorlax) might Belly Drum on the switch. I don't think the power drop from Adamant to Jolly is needed to beat fellow Stoutlands/Braviaries.
Belly Drum
  • RIP
OO
  • Shell Smash can be used but you'd have to use Return instead of Extreme Speed.
  • Baton Pass is no longer viable because it's incompatible with FakeSpeed/Rapid Spin and illegal with Shell Smash.
Cs & Cs
  • Remove Belly Drum mentions.
  • For the Residual Damage part, you should mention specific Pokemon like Ferrothorn and Garchomp.
  • Unaware is no longer necessary now that BD is gone.
