EV

Banned deucer.
Shift Gear Metagross sounds nice, good bulk and normal resist , good coverage( Psycho Cut, TPunch EQ), etc.

Some Calcs:
+1 252+ Atk Metagross Thunder Punch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Skarmory: 158-186 (47.3 - 55.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Metagross Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 472-556 (122.5 - 144.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+1 252+ Atk Metagross Psycho Cut vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Keldeo: 422-500 (130.6 - 154.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+1 252+ Atk Metagross Ice Punch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Landorus-T: 428-504 (112 - 131.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO
4 Atk Landorus-T Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Metagross: 236-282 (64.8 - 77.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
Few things.
  • I wouldn't try to attack Skarmory because it's just going to KS you and if you boost again it will Whirlwind you out. Skarmory needs to be trapped and removed first.
  • Shift Gear is very vulnerable to Sableye though good prediction on Parting Shot means your stats won't drop due to Clear Body.
  • Running 252 HP means you're still outsped by Choice Scarf Keldeo even after Shift Gear. You have to run max Speed to reach 524 (vs max Speed Scarf Keldeo 519).
  • Besides Sableye and Skarmory, it's checked by Gyarados/Mega even without the Intimidate drop & Slowbro/King w/o Thunder Punch, Quagsire, and really just about any Steel-type not weak to EQ like Forretress, Ferrothorn, and even Scizor who can wear it down with Pin Missile.
I think Metagross won't be very good until it gets its Mega with Tough Claws which will give it a strong priority Bullet Punch and powerful Gear Grind, making it viable competition to Scizor. Scizor isn't weak to Ground, but Metagross isn't 4x weak to Fire. For now Metagross is probably better suited running some kind of weird King Shield set.

Doesn't Clear Body negate the stat drop from KS?

OLD GREGG (im back baby)

old gregg for life
Ever since gen 6 came out I have run most metagross sets with agility and weakness policy. Yeah you will be slower to a scarf but you can still dent a lot of things if not OHKO. With shift gear being superior to agility, it could possibly outboost shell smash in one turn. I run 252 hp and 252 attack adamant cause it can tank a super effective hit with that spread most of the time.

Guys, let me introduce you to a very underrated Pokemon.
Rotom-Fan.

Rotom-Fan @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
- Roost
- Will-O-Wisp
- Oblivion Wing
- Volt Switch / Defog

Now you might be thinking, "What does this have over Zapdos? First, it has slightly more physical bulk than Zapdos.

252+ Atk Silk Scarf Huge Power Diggersby Extreme Speed vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Rotom-S: 139-165 (45.7 - 54.2%) -- 3.1% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Silk Scarf Huge Power Diggersby Extreme Speed vs. 252 HP / 168+ Def Zapdos: 177-208 (46 - 54.1%) -- 4.3% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

That may not be much. But...

252 SpA Choice Specs Keldeo Hydro Pump vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Zapdos: 292-345 (76 - 89.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Choice Specs Keldeo Hydro Pump vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Rotom-S: 253-298 (83.2 - 98%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Oh. Well, at least it has Will-O-Wisp...

Here are some cool cores I've been enjoying lately:

Bunny Spam

Azumarill @ White Herb
Ability: Huge Power
EVs: 92 HP / 252 Atk / 164 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Shell Smash
- Water Shuriken
- Play Rough
- ExtremeSpeed

Diggersby @ Silk Scarf
Ability: Huge Power
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Fake Out
- ExtremeSpeed
- Earthquake
- Head Charge

Magnezone @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Magnet Pull
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Volt Switch
- Thunderbolt
- Flash Cannon
- Hidden Power [Fire]

It can be difficult enough to deal with one Huge Power priority user, let alone two of them. Diggersby does a great job of weakening the opposing team so that Azumarill can sweep and vice versa.
Magnezone complements the duo nicely by trapping and eliminating problematic Steel types such as Skarmory and Ferrothorn.

LandoThorn

Landorus-Therian (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Defog
- Roost
- Earthquake
- U-turn

Ferrothorn @ Leftovers / Rocky Helmet
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Stealth Rock
- Leech Seed
- King's Shield
- Gyro Ball

This defensive core does a good job of handling a lot of the biggest physical threats in the metagame (including Diggersby, Terrakion, most Mega Tyranitars) thanks to Intimidate, King's Shield, Iron Barbs, reliable recovery and nice defensive synergy. Between them a lot of useful support options are available too - Defog, Stealth Rock, Spikes, Thunder Wave, etc.

also I won in a frontier rematch vs insanelegend http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/stabmons-169704099
and lost vs Anttya http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/stabmons-169785843
and won vs gym leader alan http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/stabmons-170473440

If you replace sword dance that diggersby set doesn't sound like a bad idea. A nice little mix up

Magmortar is even viable? it can block Sableye status moves and shot STAB Eruption or maybe V-Create

CHANDELURE IS STILL THE BEST

But that Diggersby is not bad lol? I've used it for a few weeks now and it's just great, I made a post about it somewhere idk where. The Eevee General can vouch for this set as well :o

I once swept a STABmons team... with my Quagsire. And now this match. Goes to show how important Stall is in any Meta.

Some of those sets aren't gimmicky at all. That Talonflame is especially wonderful.

Try a Grass Type Judgement since you have FB for Steel Types anyway. It would work well against Quagsire, for one.

Diggersby is such a potent Pokemon. Currently ruling atop its throne, I decided to take a different approach. I believe I did make a post about this a while back, I don't really know where it is; however, I'd like to bring it up anyways. Using Diggersby as a lead is such an unexpected move because nobody honestly expects it unless Sash + Shell Smash, but we'll not go into that. Anyways, the basic premise of this set is simple: use Spikes when the opponent doesn't have a Skarmory, set a layer of Spikes then Swords Dance when the opponent does. The great thing about Explosion is that it prevents Defog from removing Spikes, making it an extremely reliable setter. Lovely Kiss is very prediction based but it is best against Skarmory because it goes through King's Shield, otherwise wasting Diggersby because it Explodes and Skarmory gets away free. Very effective set and catches many off guard, it also gets the job done. The Eevee General can vouch for the effectiveness of this set!

Anyways, this is my 3000th post o_o. That's a lot. So, as expected, shoutouts.

But... Heatran...
Whatever. It's an option. it also smacks Rotom-W, although Rotom-W is somewhat rare.
